One of the most common Social Security questions we get is this: “If my spouse starts her Social Security at age 62 and I wait until age 70 to start mine, can she receive a higher spousal benefit when I start?” When it comes to Social Security, most people know you can qualify for retirement benefits based on your own work history — the taxes you paid into the system over the years. But what many don't realize is that you might also be eligible for a spousal benefit, even if you didn't work enough to qualify on your own. That's right — even if you didn't pay into Social Security, you may still be able to receive a benefit based on your spouse's earnings record. To find links and resources mentioned in today's podcast, visit SoundRetirementPlanning.com and click on episode #449. I created the Retirement Budget Calculator as a tool to help people build a solid retirement plan. Rather than making the tool exclusive to our clients, I decided to make it available to everyone because I believe all Americans deserve a well-thought-out retirement plan. Once you have a retirement plan, the next step is developing an investment strategy that aligns with your goals. That's where Parker Financial comes in—we help clients implement an investment strategy. To help you understand our approach, I've just finished creating a new ebook that explains our investment philosophy. You can download it for free by visiting RetirementBudgetCalculator.com. Just look for the "Invest" button in the upper right-hand corner, and you'll get access to my new ebook called "Investing in Retirement."

448 How To Set Up A Foundation And Endowment For Your Christian School

In 2019, two pastors from my church approached me with a request: would I be willing to create a foundation or endowment to raise money for the Christian school our church operates? Without hesitation, I said yes. Both of my children had attended the school, and it had a profound impact on our family. While I had experience serving on nonprofit boards, I had never started a nonprofit from scratch. This was entirely new territory. I spent the first year immersed in research—consulting legal experts, meeting with our church's board of elders, and speaking with leaders from other schools that had established foundations. Then, in October 2020, I was introduced to Ross Hjelseth. Ross had served as the head of schools at Life Christian Academy in Tacoma, WA, where he helped establish their foundation. His coaching and consulting played a crucial role in helping us navigate the process and make meaningful progress. Having gone through this experience—and after receiving multiple inquiries from others looking to do something similar—I realized it would be valuable to record a podcast on the topic. My goal is to provide a roadmap for anyone considering starting a foundation, helping them move forward more efficiently. In today's episode, I'm joined by Ross to discuss the process, key steps, and timeline involved. While Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) and Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) are sufficient for most people's charitable giving, for those interested in establishing a foundation, this conversation is for you. I hope you find it helpful. To find links and resources mentioned in today's podcast, visit SoundRetirementPlanning.com and click on episode #448. A common consideration for people living in colder climates is purchasing a second home in a warmer region to escape the winter months. However, in March 2022, the Federal Reserve began increasing interest rates to combat inflation. This move caused many potential buyers to hit pause on their plans for a second home. Recently, on September 18, 2024, the Fed announced its first rate cut, lowering the Federal Funds rate to 4.75%-5%, marking a half-percent decrease. Mortgage rates, which had soared as high as 8%, are now starting to come down. As a result, more people are reconsidering downsizing or purchasing that second home. At the same time, there has been a rise in aggressive sales tactics from mortgage lenders. To help navigate these waters, I invited my friend Frank Ellerbroek, a seasoned mortgage broker, to join today's podcast. He'll share his insights on the current market trends and offer advice on what to watch out for if you're thinking of financing a second home or downsizing to a more manageable property. On a personal note, Frank and I have been friends for nearly 20 years, and my firm has referred many clients to him over the years. I trust him because he consistently delivers great service, and I  worked with Frank when I purchased my home. That said, whether you're considering working with Frank or someone else, I always recommend talking to more than one professional to ensure you get the best terms for your unique situation. https://vantagemortgagegroup.com/about-us/meet-the-team/frankellerbroek/ https://www.optoutprescreen.com/ The Retirement Budget Calculator is an intuitive tool that promises ease and accuracy. Health savings accounts are the most incredible tool available for retirement savings. Unfortunately, too many people I meet are missing out on using HSAs as part of their retirement strategy. We are going to do a deep dive into HSAs, but... They are best for people who do not have a lot of health care costs every year and have the money to make the maximum contributions to an HSA. They have triple tax advantages in that your contributions are tax-deductible, earnings grow tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. You enjoy lower health insurance expenses compared to a low-deductible plan. You get tax deductions for contributions, tax-free growth, easy access to the money before age 59.5, you can have investment opportunities for long-term growth, and a plan to cover health-related expenses in retirement. Unlike a traditional IRA, there are no RMDs, and after age 65, you can access the money for non-medical expenses without the 20% penalty. You can delay reimbursements and allow your HSA to grow tax-free and then take a tax-free lump sum in the future. And once you turn age 65 and start Medicare, you can use your HSA to reimburse the costs of Medicare Part B and Part D or pay for Medicare Advantage plan premiums. If you do not currently have an HSA, I highly recommend you visit SoundRetirementPlanning.com and click on episode 430 to start to review all of the resources I've made available for your review.  The HSA is a powerful tool that can provide significant benefits for retirement planning and healthcare expenses. However, it's important to remember that the rules and regulations surrounding HSAs can be complex and require careful consideration. In today's podcast episode, I want to explore how to evaluate if it makes sense to sell a rental property. Many people we have served over the years own rental properties and rental properties can be a great tool for retirement because they generate predictable inflation-adjusted income. However rental properties can have their drawbacks as well. In today's show, I am going to share the process that we use to help people evaluate if they should keep or sell a rental property from the perspective of retirement cash flow. With interest rates on fixed income being so low for so many years it had been hard to justify selling a rental property but with fixed income interest rates increasing and the appreciation of real estate starting to stall as a result of higher borrowing costs, the analysis is changing.   The Retirement Budget Calculator is an intuitive tool that promises ease and accuracy. However, like any tool, user error could potentially lead to costly mistakes. To avoid this, let the experienced advisors at Parker Financial LLC guide you. In Chapter 8, we dive into investing strategies. I spend the first couple of pages of this chapter talking about diversification of your money across time segments, often called buckets. Since the publication of this book I have completed some additional back testing of a bucket strategy using a bucket simulator that one of our RBC community members developed and which you have access to. One of the things I was attempting to do in the buckets backtest was to simplify buckets by spending them sequentially rather than having refill rules. In this chapter I discuss bucket refills but after doing additional research on spending sequentially I don't think the refill rules are necessary. When you watch the video you will see that this approach of diversification works very well when compared with a 60/40 stock bond mix that is rebalanced each year. At least it works really well in the context of history. As I often remind the people we serve. History is a guide, but past performance is no guarantee of future results. If you are interested in watching the video I will include a link at Sound Retirement Planning.com so that you can see how a bucket strategy performed and I will also provide some links so that you can do you own bucket backtesting. After the discussion on buckets I get into the art and science of investing and we discuss both strategic asset allocation as well as tactical investment management.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjGNKAwT4bc https://www.retirementbudgetcalculator.com/post/fill-the-buckets-and-glide-away The Retirement Budget Calculator is an intuitive tool that promises ease and accuracy.
