This week we hear from Ridhi Radia, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Immediate Media, about where media sits on the change spectrum for diversity and inclusion. She tells us why she is encouraged by the fact that she hears people from a wide range of backgrounds talking about ED&I, embedding values of inclusion in the workplace and within organisational leadership, and the work that she is doing inside Immediate helping networks of underrepresented groups come together to create change. In the news roundup the team discusses research from Toolkits and National Research Group into consumer attitudes to publishers' digital subscription products. Of particular interest is its finding that aversion to advertising within subscription products appears to be growing, with 28% highlighting “too many advertisements” as a key reason for their dissatisfaction, up significantly from 19% in 2023. My Good School Season 11 Episode 7 A relationship is a way through which people or things are connected. People can have relations with family, friends, animals, nature and even things. The critical elements for a strong and healthy relationship are mutual Respect, Understanding, Communication, Compromise, and Trust. We should first understand the person and respect their opinions; giving them a chance to speak and putting in their shoes is important too. Being an 11-year-old child, I have never experienced a broken relationship, but let me tell my story with my best friends. My parents and I have lived in Bangalore since my birth. Over there, I met Ridhi and Tanishka on the first day of school. We became best friends. They were kind, affectionate and caring. They would cheer me up when I was not in a good mood. One day, my father said we had to shift to Hyderabad for his job there. I was distressed to leave my friends and head for a new life. Listen to my story on repairing broken relationships. “If something is broken, then learn to repair it. If someone is angry, then learn to convince and please them. Relationships are destined; just learn to handle them beautifully.” So, make sure you have a solid and good relationship, whether it is a person, animal, nature, or thing. BIO: Ridhi Bahl is a leading Astrologer in India with a Ph.D. in Astrology and Vastu.STORY: It wasn't until Ridhi was found to have an ovarian tumor that she started taking her health seriously.LEARNING: Health is your biggest and best investment. If one door closes, another opens. Don't let self-pity get out of hand. “Man is a master of his own destiny. We have the power to change our own destiny.”Ridhi Bahl Guest profileRidhi Bahl is considered one of the top-notch Astrologers in India. She has done her Ph.D. in Astrology and Vastu. Her numerous years of experience and research in various branches of Astrology have given her a professional edge in Predictive Astrology, Mundane Astrology, and Medical Astrology. With intensive research in Vastu for over two decades, Ridhi has to her credit more than 5,000 case studies of successful Vastu amendments, including commercial, industrial, and residential projects. To add to her skills, she provides Vastu solutions without making structural changes.Worst investment everWhen Ridhi was young, she suffered from certain health conditions, leading to regular tests, medical checkups, and doctor visits. At times, day-to-day activities would be a challenge to her. Her health issues continued even after she graduated, did her masters in management, and started working a corporate job. Like any other young person in their 20s, Ridhi was full of dreams and aspirations despite having health issues. All along, astrology was always at the back of Ridhi's mind, but it was just a fascination to know the future. As all these things were simultaneously going on, Ridhi was under the impression that she'd made the right decisions for herself by doing an MBA and getting the right job. But there was some disconnect somewhere happening. Even though she was paid very well, was working for an excellent organization, and everything was picture perfect from the outside, from within, it was not. Ridhi felt unhappy. Something just wasn't feeling right. But she continued with life because everybody else around her thought her life was perfect. When Ridhi was 28 years, she gave birth to a son. This was when she was found to have an ovarian tumor. Even though the tumor was benign, the whole experience was life-changing. It took a nasty toll on her health to the point where she couldn't get out of bed. Ridhi had to quit her job. She felt like her life had come to a standstill, and nothing was going to move.Ridhi had a lot of why's, and nobody was able to give her answers to those y's. This was when she decided to get into astrology. Ridhi studied astrology and got the answers she was looking for.Lessons learnedHealth is your biggest and best investment. It's more important than wealth. If one door closes, another opens. So keep going even if certain things are not working as you want them to.When you put your mind to something, you can really do it.Andrew's takeawaysIf you're pushing yourself to a point where you're physically hurting yourself, you've got to stop. Life is not about that.Sometimes life is as simple as just being grateful for what you have.Don't let self-pity get out of hand because it can lead to psychosomatic problems.Actionable adviceHave faith in yourself. In this episode we dive into the social aspects of using design to repair the fragmented social fabric of the urban landscape. The City Repair Project in Portland, Oregon has been working for a quarter century on making places within the city that help to bring together communities and establish new rituals and celebrations around community empowerment. The results are beautiful and artistic public spaces woven throughout the city, created by residents, and a change in the feel and functionality of neighborhoods towards safer and more cohesive communities. Rhidi explains how the qualities of the village are being brought back into a city grid that was designed for the extraction of capital and not the encouragement of life and health of communities. Rhidi D'CruzMark Lakeman I have an extra special interview for all of you today. In this episode I've got not one, but two visionary change makers from the community restoration non-profit City Repair, which is based in Portland Oregon. I've got Ridhi D'Cruz, the co-director of City Repair, and the founder and co-director, Mark Lakeman. They each come from very different backgrounds, but have united to foster thriving, inclusive and sustainable communities through the creative reclamation of public space. City Repair also facilitates artistic and ecologically-oriented placemaking through projects that honor the interconnection of human communities and the natural world. I know that all sounds a bit complicated, but what's worth knowing is that a large part of their projects involve permaculture garden installations and community spaces built with natural materials, all in urban environments where those types of projects have traditionally been hard to get approved In this interview, Mark and Ridhi go in depth about the concept of placemaking and why it's so essential in our modern communities. Mark gives incredible insights into the history of colonial advancement through the Americas and how it shaped the landscape and our build environment into one that isolates us from one another. Ridhi goes on to explain their annual event called the Village Building Convergence and how their work has already had an amazing impact on the interconnectedness of the people they've worked with in unexpected ways. At the end, both of them give invaluable advice on how you can take up the mantle and effectively create and facilitate connections in your own community. The answers may surprise you. For "The Abundant Edge" listeners only, you can now get 50% off your digital subscriptions to Permaculture Magazine North America by entering the code PMNA50abedge at checkout. EP30 - Tea Fleets and Painted Streets Picture yourself strolling down the beautiful tree-lined streets of Portland when suddenly you are struck by the sight of a large mural painted right in the middle of a 4-way stop. As you stand there, thinking to yourself “how did this get here? Who made this place?”, you notice a bench made out of clay, open and inviting, placed on the sidewalk and right next to a tiny neighborhood library. You sit and take in this odd, idyllic scene - spending a moment to connect with your surroundings. Very often these murals and sculptures are the work of collaborative, community projects facilitated by City Repair, a group of permaculturists, anthropologists, environmentalists, and citizens devoted to bringing neighbors together through neighborhood projects. In this episode, Collin Gabriel and Frankie Ku sit down with RIdhi D’Cruz, Adrian Haley, and Jasmine Co from City Repair to discuss placemaking, houselessness, chocolate cake, a tea “horse”, and the upcoming 17th Annual Village Building Convergence, a 10-day spread of permaculture, natural-building, and intersection painting events open to all!
