How Highways Tear Our Social Fabric Apart — and the Challenge of Measuring It (Luca Maria Aiello)

The Brake: A Streetsblog Podcast

Decades of research prove that highways tear apart the physical fabric of our cities,  segregating neighborhoods by race and income and making it harder for anyone outside a car to access the jobs, services and communities they rely on — at least if those things happen to be located on the other side of a dangerous road. But what impact do highways have on the invisible social fabric of our places — and does the internet provide a bridge between these disconnected communities, or only a digital mirror of the sharp divides that highways draw between our neighborhoods?  Today on the Brake, we're talking to data science researcher Luca Maria Aiello from IT University of Copenhagen, who found a fascinating way to quantify exactly how much downtown highways disconnect our social networks, in addition to our sidewalk, bike lane and transit networks.  And along the way, we discuss what those divisions cost us in social mobility, democratic cohesion, and real dollars and cents.

Kaplan is the author of Fragile Neighborhoods: Repairing American Society, One Zip Code at a Time. His work focuses on an issue that's been at the forefront of my mind for quite some time—the fragility of American society, not in terms of political collapse, but in terms of the erosion of social cohesion and interpersonal connections. Seth is a Professorial Lecturer at Johns Hopkins University's prestigious SAIS program, a Senior Adviser at the Institute for Integrated Transitions, and a visiting fellow at the Mercatus Center's Program on Pluralism and Civil Exchange. Beyond academia, he's consulted for organizations like the World Bank and the U.S. State Department, tackling challenges in fragile communities worldwide. In our conversation today, we'll explore what makes communities thrive—or falter—and why local action and community engagement are vital to restoring our social fabric. We'll also delve into how technology and cultural narratives play a role in shaping, or fracturing, those connections. If you've ever felt that society is growing more polarized, more disconnected, and less respectful, you'll find this conversation enlightening—and maybe even empowering.TakeawaysFragile states are politically or socially unstable with low social cohesion.American society is fragile due to declining interpersonal relationships.Technology has contributed to the isolation and atomization of society.Local engagement is crucial for rebuilding community connections.Individuals can make a difference by participating in local organizations.Cultural change is necessary to address societal issues.Constructive narratives should be amplified over polarizing ones.People often feel marginalized and disrespected in society.Restoring social fabric requires active participation in communities.Learn more about and connect with SetWhat have you done today to make your life a better life? They cover a wide range of topics, starting with the ancient history of Carthage, the dynamics of the Roman Empire, and the long-standing cultural ties in North Africa. The conversation then transitions into modern-day machine learning, AI developments, and Achref's personal journey in the AI space. They also touch on broader philosophical themes, including the impact of AI on society, the Arab Spring, and how technological advancements shape our world. You can follow Achref on LinkedIn.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Guest Introduction00:43 A Brief History of Tunisia09:23 The Arab Spring and Its Impact14:21 The Role of Social Media and Technology20:25 Journey into AI and Machine Learning25:24 The Future of AI and Technology31:21 Public vs. Private Education31:33 Language of Instruction in Tunisia32:33 Cultural and Historical Insights of Tunisia35:55 University Collaborations and Systems38:46 Impact of AI on Education48:10 Philosophical and Spiritual Reflections on AI55:04 Concluding Thoughts and FarewellKey InsightsThe historical depth of Tunisia: Achref provides a rich overview of Tunisia's history, from its ancient beginnings with the Phoenicians and Carthage, through the Punic Wars with Rome, to its later integration into the Roman Empire and subsequent Arab conquest. This deep historical context highlights Tunisia's pivotal role as a cultural and economic hub in North Africa for centuries.Impact of the Arab Spring: Reflecting on the Arab Spring, Achref acknowledges the socio-political turmoil that reshaped Tunisia and the broader Arab world. He notes how the revolution was not just a sudden event but a culmination of economic challenges and a lack of political freedom, leading to a collective need for change. This insight also touches on the complexity of external influences and internal unrest. The acceleration of technology: One of the key themes was how rapidly technology, especially AI, has evolved. Achref talks about the exponential growth of AI and how it has gone from theoretical research to mainstream applications in just a few years, particularly with the rise of large language models like GPT. This speed of development keeps the field exciting but also poses challenges in keeping up.AI and the future of work: Achref emphasizes that AI will not entirely replace humans but instead reshape how we work. He believes AI can free people from routine tasks, allowing more time for personal development and creative endeavors. Rather than fearing obsolescence, he suggests we should adapt to the new opportunities AI creates. The role of AI in education: He observes that the traditional education system, especially in programming and technical fields, must adapt to the rise of AI. Standard coding assignments may no longer be meaningful because AI can complete them more efficiently. Instead, the focus should shift toward problem-solving, critical thinking, and understanding broader system designs. The limitations of AI: Despite the remarkable capabilities of AI, Achref points out its limitations, particularly in understanding complex human intentions. While AI excels at automating tasks and generating code, it struggles with deeper conceptual thinking or solving problems that require nuanced human judgment and creativity.Balancing progress with meaning: Achref reflects on the philosophical dimension of technological progress, mentioning how we shouldn't base our sense of self solely on our jobs or the fear of being replaced by AI. He encourages finding meaning in personal relationships, learning, and other non-work-related activities, underscoring the importance of balancing technological advancement with a well-rounded life.

It's claimed the beating life and soul of Clare is at risk due to the rampant increase of pub closures. New figures show the number of public houses trading in this county has fallen by over 30% since 2005. The sound of traditional Irish music and craic that was the once the beating drum of towns and villages across Clare has been fading rapidly within the last two decades. A new report by the Drinks Industry of Ireland which has just been published, shows that since 2005, 114 of this county's public houses have closed their doors. 18 of these closures occurred last year, which is a 28% increase on the amount that ceased trading in 2022 alone. One North Clare establishment is determined to buck this trend though, having been taken from a derelict building to a thriving community hub in just the space of two years. In the last two decades alone, Tubber has lost three shops, a post office and pub, and Co-Owner of the Burren Inn, Niamh Baker says the increasing costs facing the industry are challenging. Nationally, Ireland now has over 2,000 fewer pubs than in 2005 and according to the Drinks Industry Group a quarter of existing firms have sustained a 20% - 30% increase to their business costs in the last two years. Last night, pub, hotel and restaurant industry representatives met with senior cabinet ministers to discuss potential supports in budget 2025. Among the biggest bones of contention are the 13.5% hospitality VAT rate, Ireland's rate of alcohol excise duty, which is the second highest in the EU and another expected increase to the minimum wage. Pat Coffey of Power's Pub in Clarecastle insists if publicans aren't supported, a vital and unique element of Ireland's social fabric will be at risk.

We discuss the rightward political shift in Europe, reflected in both the recent EU election results, and the rise of Nigel Farage's Reform party in the UK this week. Jen gives her prediction that Marine Le Pen will win the French election, and explains why it is in part due to tactical errors of the Left. Plus, how Nigel Farage is pitching himself as the U.K. Trump, making voting Reform seem like a protest vote against the political establishment, in a  way not totally dissimilar to Brexit. We put forward that due to the Global North not providing an alternative vision to the status-quo, many are looking to the political Right for change. Increasingly, this is within the context of globalisation vs anti-globalisation / nationalism replacing the traditional political Left / Right dichotomy. More widely, the disintegration of societal institutions has made the ‘outsiderism' of Trotskyism, critical theory, and nerd Millennial culture, deeply unpopular. The backlash to the evaporation of social fabric is that being a ‘normie' is becoming cool, and that it's a sign of superiority to have the hallmarks of social institutions like marriage and religion, given their cultural disavowal and decline. Japan has led the way ahead of us in terms of social trends, such as celibacy, and their housing crisis arriving before ours. Japan's political landscape is one where the younger generations are the most conservative, with older generations being more politically liberal or radical, a situation that is also likely our future.

George - In some ways, we all may undervalue the depth of friendship as a vital aspect of growth and learning in the spiritual life. But understanding the deeper meaning of true friendship can have incredible healing possibilities for our lives. For me, often, poetry helps me understand the underlying, deeper meaning of words. The essay below, by one of my favorite poets, David Whyte, opened my heart and understanding to what Jesus may have actually meant when he called us "friends" in John 15. ************ FRIENDSHIP not only helps us see ourselves through another's eyes, but can be sustained over the years only with someone who has repeatedly forgiven us for our trespasses, as we must find it in ourselves to forgive them in turn.  A friend knows our difficulties and shadows and remains in sight, a companion to our vulnerabilities more than our triumphs, even when we are under the strange illusion we do not need them.  Real friendship is a blessing exactly because its elemental form is rediscovered again and again through understanding and mercy. All friendships of any length are based on a continued, mutual forgiveness. Without tolerance and mercy all friendships die.  The ultimate touchstone of friendship is witness, the privilege of having been seen by someone and the equal privilege of being granted the sight of the essence of another, to have walked with them and to have believed in them, and sometimes just to have accompanied them on a journey impossible to accomplish alone. A close friendship will always reveal the shadow in the other as much as ourselves, to remain friends, we must know the other and their difficulties and encourage the best in them, not through critique but through addressing the better part of them, thus subtly discouraging what makes them smaller, less generous, less of themselves. Through the eyes of a real friendship an individual is larger than their everyday actions, and through the eyes of another we receive a greater sense of our own personhood, one we can aspire to, the one in whom they have most faith. —David Whyte, Consolations

George-when the world is breaking all around us we can often feel helpless. But the reality is we can make a difference in the social fabric nearest us by leaning into the relationships that make up our everyday lives. In this series, we are looking at how seeing one another and being seen by others makes a bigger difference than we might initially think. SLIDES George Read In Our Gathering: "We have learned to distinguish between parts but have failed to go on to reunite them. Our individuality has been undermined because we have forgotten what it truly rests on…that all things are interwoven and that each strand in the tapestry is holy."   John Phillip Newell,  A New Harmony "Remain true to yourself, but move ever upward toward greater love! At the summit, you will find yourselves united with all those who, from every direction, have made the same ascent. For everything that rises must converge.” -Pierre Teilhard de Chardin *Song Credit: Here's My Heart, written by Jason Ingram, Louie Giglio, Chris Tomlin

Dr. Kathy discusses the impact of poverty and broken family situations on children's well-being and success. She challenges the notion that poverty is the sole determining factor for children's struggles and suggests that other factors, such as the absence of a two-parent home, can also have a significant impact. She explores the idea that personal responsibility and a societal emphasis on the importance of marriage may be key in breaking the cycle of poverty and creating a better future for children.

Every decision made by founders, farmers, and leaders in agriculture shapes the future of our food system. Whether it's the cost per hectare of a biological or the value of a ton of carbon sequestered, the different goals and outcomes that end up in business plans inevitably define how time, energy, and capital are spent. But there are many outcomes of a healthy food system that don't fit in a business plan. How do leaders today account for the broad connections between people, ideas, and identities? It's this fabric that reflects who we are, what we value as a society, and how we interact as humans along the agricultural value chain.Elizabeth Brennan is Non-Executive Director of publicly-listed regenerative food company Wide Open Agriculture. She is a leader across many other organizations dedicated to innovation, equality, and diversity in our agrifood system, and has a long connection to the Western Australian wheat belt, as well as communities overseas. In this episode Liz shares her insights on:What Australian farmers can learn from other cultures, communities, and different forms of agriculture less geared toward the economics of exportHow her definition of “impact” helps her navigate multiple roles of influence across publicly-listed companies, not-for-profits, and family farming businessHow her experience working in subsistence agricultural communities in Papua New Guinea applies to her work in Australian agriculture todayWhat the role social fabric in rural and regional communities means, and how to make sure it isn't lost in the futureFor more information and resources, visit our website.
