“The poll that matters is the one that happens on election day.” – Heather Wilson Teen radio host Keerthi discusses the results of the 2024 election and reports on how teens are reacting to the results. She first provides a humorous rendition of the history of America's election system and the grand experiment of democracy. For all its flaws, America's election system is a beautiful, chaotic mess. It's powered by millions of people who care enough to show up—sometimes in person, by mail, and sometimes just to yell about it on Facebook. Keerthi then focuses on the unprecedented events of this election: Joe Biden dropping out of the race, the first Black/South Asian woman, Kamala Harris stepping up, a convicted felon in Trump running for the third time, and the meme-able moments from all the debates. Donald Trump and Kamala Harris represented two vastly different political ideologies, which explain their respective support bases and policy priorities. Keerthi identifies the varied values of each candidate. Many teens believe that America is doomed. However one feels about the election results, the best way to create a better country is to communicate, listen, and share our goals, thoughts, and dreams. Gaurav Keerthi, Head of Advisory and Emerging Business at Ensign InfoSecurity, joins Kopi Time to provide a fascinating overview of the current state of affairs in cybersecurity. We begin with the intersection of geopolitics and cyberattacks. From state sponsored defensive and offensive teams to independent actors with a range of motives, the number of agents attacking the integrity of national power grids, airports, water supply, along with healthcare and education systems, has proliferated at an extraordinary pace in recent decades. In addition to nations, large companies and individuals face millions of attacks a day that are increasingly sophisticated. Even with a tiny fraction succeeding, cyber crimes have become an economy worth hundreds of billions of the dollars. Gaurav works through the processes behind building systems that are not 100% immune from cyberattacks, but capable of bouncing back in the event of an attack. With AI in play already, and quantum on track to disrupt cryptography, new waves to technology are making cyber defence more challenging, but the same tech is also being used to build tools and practices for higher degrees of surveillance and resilience. Gaurav's views are more realistic than pessimistic, focused on risk management. A must listen. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“Young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the change-makers of today.” – Barack Obama Julia and Keerthi host this election episode to discuss how teens influence election outcomes. Julia focuses on the new media company Jubilee, which is shaking up political discourse online and inspiring a new level of engagement among young people. Through debates on hot-button issues, like abortion restrictions, gun control, the 2024 election, Jubilee's “Middle Ground” series draws millions of viewers. Youth reporter Milan, talks about the Republican and Democratic parties and who is running for office. Democracy means that we the people, get to vote and choose our president or any other elections. Keerthi says that teens may not be voting, but they are shaping elections with their views. This election is about the future—teens future. So how can we, the “too-young-to-vote” crowd, make waves in 2024? Grandparents are both our past and our future. In some ways, they are what has gone before, and in others, they are what we will become. —Fred Rogers Hosts Julia and Keerthi talk about the superpowers of grandparents. They possess the unique ability to turn every mundane event into an epic adventure. Each one is a treasure trove of adventure, mystery, and, quite often, questionable fashion choices from their youth. They've seen it all—wars, moon landings, and the evolution of the telephone from rotary to touch. Keerthi's grandparents are Indian and don't speak English, so they couldn't be on the show today. But Keerthi shares how much she loves hanging out with them on their coconut farm when she visits India. One set of her grandparents is from the same village where Kamala Harris' mom grew up! Julia introduces us to her two amazing and accomplished grandpas. Yukon joined Julia and Keerthi for a lively discussion about how he came to America from China and became a renowned economist, not seeing China again until he became the World Bank's country director for China with an office in Beijing. His stories and advice will have listeners craving more. Unfortunately, Julia's grandfather on her dad's side was unable to come on the program but she interviewed him about his life earlier. Jonathan Howe is a retired four-star United States Navy admiral, who worked at the White House with Henry Kissinger and President Nixon. He was the Special Representative for Somalia to United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. He met his future wife at age 13 and the rest is history. Both grandpas have Wikipedia pages. “The cinema has no boundary; it is a ribbon of dream.” - Orson Welles Are teens accurately represented in films and TV shows? Host Keerthi and reporter Hasini don't think so. They tackle this issue and agree that teens are often written by adults who have forgotten their teen years and played by older adults. There is a focus of focus on stereotypes (like the nerd, the jock, the mean girl), but not enough on the complexities and nuances that reel teens experience. Filmmakers forget that real teenagers are mostly just trying to figure out how to get a good grade while avoiding their parents' endless “life lesson” conversations. Teens are still depicted as either effortlessly cool or hopelessly awkward. It's like directors have a script that says, “Let's make the teen either an Instagram influencer who has their entire life figured out or someone who doesn't understand the concept of a phone charger.” There's rarely an in-between. Hasini thinks that, Euphoria, has done a great job of reflecting the real world. The show addresses issues like mental health, addiction, gender identity, and trauma, and it doesn't shy away from showing the raw, messy realities that many teens face. The characters are complex, flawed, and very real, which makes them relatable. Keerthi notes that cinematic portrayals are like candy—deliciously sweet but not very nutritious. They offer an escape from reality and a chance to dream about lives more glamorous, dramatic, or adventurous than our own. In conclusion, let's celebrate the diversity of teenage experiences in cinema. Let's have characters who are awkward, unsure, and who occasionally wear the same clothes three days in a row. Every teenager deserves to see themselves represented in a way that's as real as their struggle to keep their room clean. When we think about animals, we often imagine them as playful companions or majestic creatures in the wild. Host, Keerthi tells us that animals also play a crucial role in our health. Animals are far more than just pets or wildlife. They are our companions, our helpers, and our sources of comfort. Whether offering emotional support, assisting with daily tasks, or simply being a part of our lives, animals play a crucial role in our health and happiness. Appreciate the humor, the love, and the downright absurdity that pets and animals bring into our lives. Whether they're chasing their tails, making us laugh with their antics, or simply sitting quietly beside us, they remind us that life is a little bit better with a bit of furry—or scaly—company. Sharanya and Keerthi host a program about a critical topic that affects Americans: gun control. Reducing gun violence is challenging because of the polarization around the issue. Keerthi talks about advocating for the Second Amendment while also requiring safety for gun storage. They interview teen activist, Amelia Vander May, who led a youth team to successfully lobby an ordinance in Santa Barbara that requires firearms to be stored in a locked container and disabled by a trigger lock. Amelia spearheaded the Santa Barbara Youth Council initiative to write and lobby for a safe storage ordinance aimed at preventing youth gun deaths. For a year, she gathered public support for the ordinance, worked with city advisory groups and nonprofits, and presented to the city council. The ordinance, which requires firearms in residences and vehicles to be stored in a locked container and disabled by a trigger lock, was passed into law and became effective in April 2024. Created to reduce gun violence, the Safe Storage Ordinance prevents unauthorized access to firearms, lowering the risk of unintentional injury, mass shootings, and gun suicides. She talks about how teens must get involved, even though many adults don't take young people seriously. She suggests that teens be professional, do the research, get involved, and have those difficult conversations. Make others aware that guns are dangerous. Banning guns is not a feasible solution. We need bipartisan support and community outreach. Background checks, safe storage methods, services for mental health, addressing racial disparity, and healthy discussions are avenues for creating a safer environment. Sharanya shares a history of firearms and the U.S. grappling with the high rates of gun violence. What are the root causes? Tune in for an educational conversation about reducing gun violence. Two years since our first guest interview episode of Untether Your Life with clinical psychologist Dr. Jyothsna Bhat, many strides have been made in mental health in the South Asian diaspora. This is due to the work of groups like South Asian Americans for Change (SAAFC), co-founded by Rupal Joshi, Keerthi Channarasappa, and this week's guest - Sumit Shukla. In addition to this role, Sumit is an accomplished pharmaceutical expert with nearly 15 years of industry experience, a dedicated husband and father, and a passionate mental health advocate. Driven by personal experiences with depression and anxiety and overcoming alcohol addiction, Sumit established SAAFC with a mission to dismantle mental health stigma and promote holistic well-being in the South Asian American community through arts, education, and community-building events. Breaking the Silence, Sumit's YouTube documentary series featuring renowned comedian Nimesh Patel and previous Untether Your Life guest Ankur Varma, serves as a platform for raising awareness and sparking conversations on mental health, particularly among South Asian men. Join host Nikhil Torsekar and Sumit Shukla this week as we discuss: The upcoming annual SAAFC event - The Healing Through Art - on March 2, 2024 at Tendenza in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Tickets available at the SAAFC Website. What Sumit and his cousin Nimesh Patel – an Emmy award-nominated comedian and writer for Chris Rock, Hasan Minhaj, and Saturday Night Live - uncovered when they teamed up with Ankur Varma to create Breaking the Silence. The application of the operating systems analogy when we look at updating values, traditions, and behaviors passed down from our parents. How the outdated template of gender norms has prevented many South Asian males from focusing on mental health. Second-generation South Asian immigrants' destructive habit of “toxic gratitude” and feelings of inferiority when comparing their struggles to those of their immigrant parents. How Sumit had turned to alcohol throughout his undergrad years at Ohio State University and many years afterward; how this ineffective form of self-medication prompted a wake-up-call, and intervention from his wife Rupal, cousin Nimesh Patel, and other family members. The origin of SAAFC, which sprung from a discussion between Sumit, Rupal, and Keerthi, and coincided with many of the board members relocating to Philadelphia to launch the organization. How Sumit's desire to – as a father of a young son – “break the cycle” of mental health issues. How the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization achieves this mission through online workshops, social events, and the upcoming The Healing through Art Gala on March 2nd, 2024. Visit the SAAFC Website to learn more about the organization, or get tickets for the The Healing Through Arts gala. “Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.“ – Arthur C. Clark This episode of Express Yourself! could be right out of a sci-fi novel! Could outerspace become our next home? Keerthi hosts and presents a segment suggesting the idea of venturing beyond our planetary borders. She believes it is more than just finding a new place to hang our space helmets; it's about expanding our horizons, both literally and metaphorically. It's about pushing the boundaries of what we thought possible and daring to dream of worlds beyond our wildest imagination. She wants to ignite the flames of curiosity, to inspire you to gaze up at the night sky with wonder and awe, to dream of worlds beyond our own and to dare to reach for them. In her segment, Space Spotlight, Saanvi starts with Mars as our first adventure. The journey ahead is about building physical infrastructure, but also about gathering the resilience, adaptability, and community spirit needed to live in such a different environment. Mars is like the Goldilocks of our solar system – not too hot, not too cold, and with a day almost as long as ours. It's got water ice, which is crucial for life, and it's the most accessible place for us to land, live, and learn about living on another planet. Plus, its surface has varied geography, from mountains taller than Everest to canyons longer than the U.S. is wide. It's the best shot we have at a second home in the solar system. So let us embrace the uncertainty of the cosmos, let us revel in the beauty of the unknown, and let us boldly declare that yes, outer space is indeed our next home. For in doing so, we embrace the boundless potential of the human spirit, and we affirm our place in the grand tapestry of the universe. Are you ready to launch? In this episode of Larger Than Us, Keerthi and Sneha talk with Suswati Basu - a South Asian British journalist and editor, as well as podcast host of How to be…- a books podcast focusing on enhancing mental well-being, self-development, and understanding key social issues on a global scale. They start with how disabilities are defined - physical, mental, and hidden and talk through stigmas with each. As Suswati shares her experiences, Keerthi and Sneha also talk about theirs which leads the conversation to the healthcare system - particularly gaps in the current system that were hyperbolized with the pandemic, the approaches for diagnosis, patient care, and training of healthcare professionals. While they talk about the growing issues and similarites within the UK and the US, they dive into approaches within the corporate world to address this, especially getting leadership buy-in for inclusive efforts, and nuances with South Asian culture that affect navigating certain conversations around disability awareness and treatment. “Not all screen time is bad, but it matters how much time we're spending and what we're gaining from the time.” - Ariene Pellicane Charvi and Keerthi host a fascinating program on how to manage screen time. Charvi states that in an era where our lives unfold increasingly on screens, the concept of screentime has become a ubiquitous and often debated facet of modern existence. As we navigate this digital age, understanding screentime is not just a matter of tracking minutes spent on devices; it's about unraveling the intricate tapestry of human behavior, societal norms, and the impact of technology on our well-being. Keerthi concludes that managing screen time is an epic adventure, a quest to reclaim lost minutes and conquer the digital dragons that threaten our productivity. Armed with the App-etizer, the Notification Hydra slayer, and the Unplug Amulet, you shall emerge victorious in this battle for time. Reporter Rory joins the conversation with his segment, The Breakdown to discuss how its challenging to manage social media when a student is forced to be on screen daily for schoolwork. Social media has affected young adults in many ways, and while it does offer more connectivity, it can lead to many mental and physical issues, such as problems with sleep as well as engaging in less physical activity, and harm the development of the brain indirectly or directly if teens use technology too much in place of real-life experience. He advocates asking parents for help in limiting the usage. For example, eliminate devices during mealtimes and sleep. Reporter of A.I. and Us, Kevin talks about how A.I. can help manage screen time and warns about the dangers of looking at a screen for too long as the blue light can damage eyes. A.I. can warn when screen time has gotten excessive on its own. A.I. can monitor health. A.I. can leverage gamification principles to make the process of managing screen time engaging and rewarding. If a particular approach to screen management proves ineffective for an individual, A.I. candynamically adjust its interventions. This adaptability ensures that solutions are not one-size-fits-all but are personalized to meet the unique needs and preferences of each user. A.I. becomes your own personal virtual doctor, making sure that you get whatever works for you. However you do it, make sure to limit your screen usage for improved health and socialization. We regularly cover significant breaches on this podcast, but it is rare that we have enough information about a major breach to cover in enough detail to devote an entire segment to. Today, we dive into lessons learned from the breach of Okta's customer support system that targeted some other major security vendors. This is part of a troubling trend, where the target of an attack only serves as a jumping off point to other organizations. China's 2023 attack of Microsoft is an example of this. It was easier to attack Microsoft 365, one of the world's largest business SaaS platforms, than to go after each of the 25 individual targets these Chinese actors needed access to. Traditionally, we've thought of lateral movement as something that happens within a network segment, or even within a single organization. Now, we're seeing lateral movement between SaaS platforms, between clouds, from third party vendors to customer, and even from open source project to open source adopters. Remember the days when it would take weeks, or even months, to get your results from medical tests? When a routine hospital checkup would take up the best part of a day? When doctors could be seen carrying great wads of paper notes as they made their patient rounds? It wasn't that long ago, but due to the pressures of COVID-19 and recent technological advancements, the healthcare industry is undergoing a profound revolution. From telemedicine to cutting-edge innovations in diagnostics and treatment and the use of robotics and automation in surgery, technology is fostering a new era of personalized medicine. It's an era centered around improving accessibility, efficiency and patient-centered care. One woman at the forefront of this technological revolution is Keerthi Harikrishnan, an expert in healthcare and life sciences with Persistent Systems. She joins our Digital Dish hosts to discuss some of the ways that emerging technology and data analytics are improving healthcare outcomes for both patients and medics. Listen in as Keerthi discusses her fascinating journey, from her passion for researching heart disease and lung cancer, to her current role at Persistent where she leverages the latest technologies to advance the understanding of human diseases. As a woman who has built a successful career in both science and tech, she shares some valuable advice and lessons learned for other women navigating careers in these fields.
In this episode of Larger Than Us, Keerthi and Sneha interview Anjali Badrinath - a recent graduate from the College of New Jersey in clinical mental health counseling. They dive into aspects of generation trauma - what that may look like, how the conversations occur with different relationships (elders, younger family members, etc.), and how first-generation/second-generation South Asian Americans can start finding ways of breaking that generational cycle. While they discuss different mental health issues, they also talk about the available resources and what clinical mental health counseling is so people can differentiate the different types of professionals and resources based on their needs. As they conclude the episode, Anjali, Sneha, and Keerthi talk about their personal experiences in an effort to open up the dialogue about mental health concerns within their own families and advice for others to try and do the same.
