For his 2017 PhD, John Hunter put forward a hypothesis that offers insights into both the “transformational” experiences associated with large group awareness training (LGAT) participation and the common claims of psychological harm and problematic behaviour associated with participation. Dr Hunter presented his work at the 2023 International Cultic Studies Association conference, and for this episode, he breaks down some of his findings – including where LGATs may or may not intersect with cults and cult-like behaviour.Full episode page here. Our era is defined by trauma — from COVID-19 to climate change, divisive politics to economic pressures, gun violence and generational upheavals. And the collective effect of all these traumas can make it pretty hard to face the day. Robert J. Lifton, my guest on this week'sWhoWhatWhy podcast, has inspiring and realistic ideas for coping with it all, as suggested by the title of his latest book, Surviving Our Catastrophes: Resilience and Renewal from Hiroshima to COVID-19.    The 97-year-old Lifton, a renowned psychiatrist, is also the author of the National Book Award–winning Death in Life: Survivors of Hiroshima and Losing Reality: On Cults, Cultism, and the Mindset of Political and Religious Zealotry.

Sappiamo come andò a finire, arrivando persino all'uccisione dei bambini.

This list comes from here website if you want to learn more here: http://www.alexandrastein.com/warning-signs.html The group/person has the Total and Only answer. Only they have the right line, will make the revolution, solve your problems, empower you, make you loved, rich, effective, holy, etc. Attempts to isolate you from existing close relationships (friends/family) and the outside world Extreme, immediate and/or inappropriate friendliness or attention. Promises of perfection if only you adhere to their program Your “gut-feeling” tells you something is wrong. Trust this, and try to analyze it. The group creates conditions of extreme stress, threat or fear (emotional and/or physical) Not answering questions, or turning them back on the questioner. Inappropriate personal boundaries Loaded language: strange language or jargon you initially can't understand. Canned, repetitive phrases. A hard sell for further commitment, programs or contact. If you resist, you're selfish, ungodly, “bourgeois”, don't believe in yourself, etc. Encouragement to cut ties with family or friends, unless you can recruit them. Secrecy, inappropriate “confidentiality”. Lack of privacy - constantly with group members, constantly busy with group activities. Ends justifies the means. It's OK to lie to others in the name of the Cause, God, for success, etc. Challenging your fundamental identity: Your strengths are criticized as your weaknesses. Once you're in, heavy pressure to stay in. Those who do leave are shunned. They become the enemy, or objects of pity. No criticism allowed of the group or leader. The group/leader is always right. Deception: what you thought you'd get on joining or attending an activity turns out to be something else. During a recent podcast interview, my friend and fellow survivor Lisa Kohn shared that while she was on tour to promote her memoir To the Moon and Back: A Childhood Under the Influence, she had the opportunity to be interviewed for a popular daytime talk show. She said that before she went on stage the producer was doing a pre-interview and asked her ‘were you brainwashed?' I was tempted to completely derail the conversation and delve into a treatise on what thought reform is, and why asking a survivor if they were brainwashed is a stigmatizing question - at best. An incredible conversation about friend of the pod, David's experience in/with a cult. Honestly one of the best conversation's we've had yet. It was recorded a while ago but still holds up remarkably well. Keep an eye out for Pat's hammer pants and how Andy keeps constantly referring to how he's disappointed in ABC's new TGIF lineup. !!! This week Ana Marie Cox (@anamariecox) sits down with Robert J. Lifton to remind you how bad things have gotten politically— but that remaining optimistic is not totally insane. They begin by drawing the parallels between Trump and other cult leaders/demagogues. Afterwards, they discuss the followers of Trump, why they remain followers, and how to get them to (hopefully) leave. In this episode, Derin bravely goes in to greater detail about life inside the cult and his opportunities to leave. Listen first to the original episode about Derin joining this cult here. Derin articulately expresses, not just his own journey, but the narrative of those who were in the cult right alongside him. Derin's vulnerability and courage help us to hold our own experiences up to the light of his experience and see the extent to which we might be participating in similar social dynamics. Derin concludes with a beautiful poem by David Waggoner, "Lost." Warning: This episode contains stories of manipulation and abuse. Doug Recommends the following book: Robert J. As Derin was preparing to leave college he wanted to do more than he felt he had necessarily prepared for with a double major in Spanish and Philosophy. So the clever pleas of one of the graduate students appealed to his sense fo giftedness as well as his sense of purpose. They also led hi down a path that ended up being wildly off course from the truest sense of his self. Now, years later, Derin shares his story again with me here at the Heart Burn. In Between Two Ages, the first long series I did for Ideas in early 1981, I began to explore the unique character of our historical moment, and to advance the idea that only a radical change of mind could respond to its demands. Three years later, I got a chance to follow up that initial effort with the present series. Its organizing image or paradigm is the idea of a new age – the way in which I then spoke about my dawning recognition that received social and political forms are quite unable to grasp humanity’s new situation. The intervening thirty-four years have made me more tentative, but, if you take away a certain brash, post-1960's confidence that a reconciliation between men and women, modernity and tradition, humanity and nature was on the horizon, there is much in that way of looking at things that I would still affirm today. Certainly the sparkling cast I managed to assemble makes this series worth revisiting. Among its luminaries are Northrop Frye, Raimundo Panikkar, Robert J. Lifton, Father Thomas Berry and many others, whose names I have listed below. One of the characteristic features of the documentary form, as I’ve observed when re-introducing other old series as well, is that many different points of view are made to align and march, more or less, in the same direction. A few years later, I would have treated the many thinkers represented here separately, and tried to understand what was distinctive in each one’s approach. I don’t mean I have papered over their differences here, or that there was anything promiscuous about the way I assembled these particular people. Each one was, in some way, a teacher to me, and each one’s work bore on the themes that I wanted to develop. I mean only that, once one has interviewed so many people, the challenge of integrating them all into a more or less coherent structure, leaves little room for the contextualization of each speaker, or for consideration of all the ways in which they differ from one another, and from the consenus, however rough, that I was imposing on them by smushing them all together in one program. That said, I still find that these shows make interesting listening. The dramatis personae is as follows: Part One: Dhyane Ywahoo, Northrop Frye, Joseph Brown, Raimundo Panikkar, Derrick de Kerckhove, Thomas Berry, Ewart CousinsPart Two: Dhyani Ywahoo, Joseph Brown, Richard Lee, Ashley Montagu, Stanley Diamond, Joseph CampbellPart Three: Walter Odajnyk, Robert J. Lifton, Ira Progroff, Jean Houston, Richard MossPart Four: David Spangler, Northrop Frye, Raimundo Panikkar, Ewart Cousins, Thomas Berry, Matthew Fox

Matthias Riedl is an associate professor of history and holds the privately supported Chair of Comparative Religious Studies at Central European University (Budapest, Hungary). Before coming to CEU Budapest, he taught at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, and Duke University. His research interest is the comparative history of religion, with a focus on the relation of religion and politics. Lecture Details: The analytical category of "apocalyptic violence" has been frequently applied in recent studies of terrorism, sectarian violence, and revolutionary action. As the psychologist Robert J. Lifton put it: "Apocalyptic violence denotes the readiness to cause enormous destruction in the service of spiritual purification. A world must cease to exist in order to make space for a better one." However, as Riedl will discuss, the category is by no means self-explanatory, since apocalyptic literature is traditionally deterministic and dissuades the readers from taking action. A historical overview will demonstrate that revolutionary and violent forms of apocalypticism emerge only in early modernity, when mystical and humanist influences undermine the determinist creed. Riedl therefore argues that apocalyptic violence, despite its references to an ancient symbolic tradition, is a decidedly modern phenomenon.

We draw on lessons from the literal book on brainwashing (Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism by Robert J.
