Barely a week after we recorded this chat, Chef Anwar Abdullatief's restaurant was named African Restaurant of the Year at the Luxe Restaurant Awards. A stunning achievement for an talented chef who never really intended to open a restaurant. Tired of fine diner kitchens, he thought he'd do something with food products. Somehow, along the way he found himself opening the excellent Barakat at Time Out Cape Town, and then The Happy Uncles, the city's first halal fine diner, kind of opened itself at his production kitchen in Voortrekker Road. His journey is a fascinating one, and it was a cracking conversation. US Air Force Veteran Itzel Barakat uses plant medicine to overcome PTS and intergenerational trauma. In this episode of Plantscendence, we talk to Itzel Barakat, a Panamanian-American veteran who served in the US Air Force for six years. After returning from deployment and encountering intense challenges, including emotional numbness, uncontrollable anger, and insomnia, Itzel found solace and transformation through various encounters with plant medicine, ranging from psilocybin and ketamine to ayahuasca and 5-MeO. Throughout their conversation, Itzel and Jon discuss everything from ancestral visions and intergenerational trauma work, to the importance of destigmatizing mental health in the military. Itzel also talks about the profound impact that animal encounters have had on her healing journey – whether it be equine-assisted therapy or accidentally coming face-to-face with a bear while doing mushrooms in the woods – and her commitment to helping veterans impacted by PTS (post-traumatic stress), and other trauma-affected groups, gain access to these alternative healing modalities.

In the late 19th century, the Ottoman government sought to fill landscapes they legally defined as "empty." Both land and people were incorporated into territorially bounded grids of administrative law. Bedouin Bureaucrats: Mobility and Property in the Ottoman Empire (Stanford University Press, 2023) examines how tent-dwelling, seasonally migrating Bedouin in the Syrian interior engaged in these processes of Ottoman state transformation on local, imperial, and global scales. Narrating the lives of Bedouin individuals involved in Ottoman administration, Nora Barakat brings this population to the center of modern state-making, from their involvement in the pilgrimage administration in the 18th century and their performance of land registration and taxation as the Ottoman bureaucracy expanded in the 19th, to their eventual rejection of Ottoman attempts to reallocate the “empty land” they inhabited in the 20th. In this episode, we discuss categories and definitions of “bureaucrat,” “tent-dwelling,” and “tribe” in this context; longue durée shifts in Ottoman forms of governance in the Syrian interior and the role of Bedouin elites within Ottoman administration; and both Bedouin participation in and resistance to Ottoman state-making projects. Maggie Freeman is a PhD student in the School of Architecture at MIT. She researches uses of architecture by nomadic peoples and historical interactions of nomads and empires, with a focus on the modern Middle East. Learn more about your ad choices. How to think about Distributed Ledger Technology and what it can do for you
In the late nineteenth century, Ottoman statesmen sought to fill landscapes they legally defined as "empty." Both land and people were incorporated into territorially bounded grids of administrative law. Nora Elizabeth Barakat's Bedouin Bureaucrats: Mobility and Property in the Ottoman Empire (Stanford University Press, 2023) examines how tent-dwelling, seasonally migrating Bedouin engaged in these processes of Ottoman state transformation on local, imperial, and global scales. As the "tribe" became a category of Ottoman administration, Bedouin in the Syrian interior used this category both to gain political influence and to organize community resistance and maintain control over land. Narrating the lives of Bedouin individuals involved in Ottoman administration, the book brings this population to the center of modern state-making - from their involvement in the pilgrimage administration in the eighteenth century and their performance of land registration and taxation as the Ottoman bureaucracy expanded in the nineteenth, to their eventual rejection of Ottoman attempts to reallocate the "empty land" they inhabited in the twentieth. Barakat places the Syrian interior in a global context of imperial expansion into regions formerly deemed marginal, especially in relation to American and Russian empires. Most people know newbies can gain muscle and lose fat at the same time, but can intermediate or advanced lifters accomplish a body recomposition? In other words, if you're already fit, can you optimize your body composition by building muscle and losing fat simultaneously, or do you have to cycle through bulks and cuts? More importantly, how do you actually do a body recomp? Is there a difference between recomping and bulking or cutting, and what are the key factors and variables to adjust if you want to build muscle while burning fat? To help answer these questions, I tagged in my friend and scientist, Chris Barakat, who's actually published research on this topic. If you're not familiar with Chris, he's a published scientist, educator, coach, and natural bodybuilder, and he's a repeat guest on the podcast for good reason. His years of developing his book smarts along with his practical knowledge of gym know-how means he knows how to get results while also having something interesting to say, and I always learn something new in our chats. In this interview, Chris and I discuss . . . What a recomp is, and whether more trained individuals can build muscle while losing fat Who should aim for a recomp and how to do so (as both a beginner and more advanced trainee) Common mistakes that prevent people from recomping The signs you're recomping effectively and how to track it How to adjust your training volume and rep ranges while in a deficit and why Strategies for advanced lifters to recomp What to expect in terms of strength loss while cutting (and how to know when to make an adjustment) And more . . . So, if you're interested in learning about body recomposition in intermediate and advanced lifters, and the best ways to ensure you're recomping effectively, listen to this podcast and let me know your thoughts! Do people respond differently to the same training? How big of a range is there? Is there such a thing as a non-responder? How can you know if you're a high-responder or low-responder (hardgainer) to training? How should your starting point affect your workout programming? If you've ever wondered these things or had similar questions, you're in good company, because they're things I'm often asked. You're also going to enjoy this podcast because I'm interviewing Chris Barakat all about individual responses to training. In our discussion, we chat about . . . What a high-responder is and what being one means for total muscular potential Individual training response differences in the scientific literature and in studies he was directly involved in How inconsistency holds back gains despite being “advanced” in training years Signs to look for if you're wondering about your training potential Individual differences in strength endurance How starting points should be taken into account with your training program And more . . . This episode's guest is a returning guest and the absolute best person to talk about a topic we're very passionate about... Science vs. Experience! The truth is, being "Evidence Based" is the combination of these two things. Yet many people online nowadays do not practice in the trenches nearly enough to have the experience required to make truly educated decisions, especially when the coaching decisions needing to be made are in opposition of what the scientific literature might say. So today, Chris Barakat runs through some touchy-topics with us and challenges the scientific literature... we discuss fasted cardio, reverse dieting, high carb vs. low carb diets, training intensity, and more… Follow Chris on Instagram @christopher.barakat and check out his website at www.schoolofgainz.com —- To Download The Tailored Trainer and Gain Unlimited Access To Expert Programming, Sign Up Here: Tailored Trainer Sign Up Page To Get Your Questions Answered On The Podcast: Ask Us Here! 1st Phorm Supps: To Get FREE PRIORITY SHIPPING and Support The Podcast, Get Your Supplements At 1st Phorm Using Our Link: www.1stphorm.com/tailoredcoachingmethod To Apply For Coaching: Click Here Download 1 (or ALL) Of Our FREE GUIDES: www.tailoredcoachingmethod.com/guides Private Podcast FB Community: Be Part Of The Conversation and Community, RIGHT HERE. —- Timestamps: (6:30) - Thoughts on evidence based community.
