Today, I am sharing an episode from my other podcast, Weird Stuff in the Bible. Each week, I dive into a different weird topic regarding bizarre things in scripture. Hear more by subscribing to this podcast as well! And tune back in on Cross References next week to hear an interview with Chris Pace of Messenger International about his new book, Level Up.On a recent episode of this podcast, I was discussing a weird story about Moses in Exodus 4, I came across another pretty odd verse that generates some confusion among Christians: Exodus 4:21.Now, I didn't want to stop and analyze that verse because it would have taken me on a rabbit trail, and I was already trying to talk about a different weird thing, and I would have had to go down a weird-ception of weird-within-a-weird. So I decided to come back to it this week. And what does Exodus 4:21 say? Well, it's as Moses is on his way back to Egypt, and God says(Exodus 4:21)“When you go back to Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the miracles that I have put in your power. But I will harden his heart, so that he will not let the people go. So that's strange because it raises the question of whether Pharaoh even had a choice about how everything was going to play out. Because if you know the story, Pharaoh doesn't want to let the people go, and he pays a pretty steep price for it.And yet Pharaoh never relents. All throughout the story, his heart is harder than your grandma's fruit cake at Christmas. But this claim that God would harden Pharaoh's heart makes it seem like Pharaoh wasn't even really able to let the people go if he wanted to. So what gives? Did Pharaoh have free will? And perhaps more importantly to us: do you and I have free will?I find this to be weird, and I'd like to explore why it's in the Bible. Turn to Exodus 4, and let's get weird.0:00 - Introduction2:40 - What is a Hard Heart?6:20 - God vs Pharaoh9:40 - Is Anyone at Fault?13:40 - Next Time15:25 - Would God Harden our Hearts? If you want to get in touch, my email is weirdstuffinthebible@gmail.comHosted by Luke Taylor

5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins
In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins is joined by Addison Bevere, COO of Messenger International and author of "Words with God: Trading Boring, Empty Prayer for Real Connection". Their discussion covers diverse topics such as leadership, the importance of reading and learning from different sources, prayer, and the impact of the voice of the accuser in today's world. This episode emphasizes the significance of leadership grounded in faith and listening to God's voice. BEST QUOTES “So much of prayer invites us into a form of silence where we discover that the silence is actually a language of God's. And it's not a form of rejection. It's an invitation to a fresh way of engaging with God's voice and understanding how God has worked with us.” – Addison Bevere “Something about silence drives us to better understand God and our world and ourselves and how it all comes together.” – Addison Bevere “I thought that peace was having all the answers. I didn't realize that peace was being in tune with the one who is the answer.” – Addison Bevere “God doesn't deliver us from a thing. If he knows that that thing will ultimately deliver us to Him.” – Addison Bevere “Joy is an important tenant of the kingdom of God. You are sacrificing your joy because you are trying to sustain something that is not yours to sustain.” – Addison Bevere “When we make prayer about us moving our mouths, we actually make prayer about us and not about God.” – Addison Bevere “Shalom does not mean peace. We use it as peace and peace is certainly a part of shalom. But what Shalom literally means is integration. It means the pieces coming together to make a whole. And because the pieces are coming together to make a whole, Shalom communicates peace, joy, and wellness. What is fractured and fragmented is coming together and becoming whole.” – Addison Bevere RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Words with God: Trading Boring, Empty Prayer for Real Connection by Addison Bevere How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading by Mortimer J. Let's face it. For most of us, prayer is a struggle. We know we should pray. Deep down, we have some sense that it would be good for us—that it would help us be more grounded, more connected to God. But in the busyness of our hurried lives, slowing down to pray can often feel like a cosmic waste of time. We begin asking questions such as:-Do our prayers even matter?-Why does it so often feel like there's no one on the other end of the line?-What, if anything, is truly happening when we pray?-Are we having words with God or just words with ourselves? In today's episode and in his new book, Words with God, Addison Bevere invites you deeper into the tension of prayer—the struggles, the doubts, the answers—the divine wrestling of it all. In this fast-paced and fragmented world, you'll discover how prayer is the only way to put it all back together. Throughout history, the people of God have been known as those who wrestle with him. There are no formulas. God doesn't fit in our boxes. He can't be pinned down. But he invites us to know him by contending with him. Authentically. Honestly. Here. Separating the voice of the accuser from the voice of God, or even our own voice can sometimes be difficult. Addison shares from his new book, Words With God, about this very issue and offers some practical and heart felt insight on how to hear God's voice more clearly. **Addison Bevere is COO of Messenger International (founded by John & Lisa Bevere), a cofounder of SonsAndDaughters.tv and a bestselling author. His new book, Words with God: Trading Boring, Empty Prayer for Real Connection (April 18, 2023) recasts prayer as an intimate and necessary part of the human experience. You can pick up a copy of Words with God: Trading Boring, Empty Prayer for Real Connection at Wordswithgod.org. It is also available for pre-order at: Words With God Hey friends, welcome to the Hearing Jesus Podcast. Do you sometimes doubt if you are truly hearing God's voice or if it's really your own? Do you wonder how you can know the difference? Do you struggle to feel confident in your relationship with God and what He says in his word? Do you sometimes feel stagnant or like you hit a wall in your spiritual life? Hey, I'm your host, Rachael Groll: missionary, author, pastor, and life coach. And I have been there. I, too, was doubting God's voice in my own life. I, too, felt insecure about the things I thought God might be calling me to do. I wanted to make a difference in the world and be obedient to what God was calling me to do, but I wasn't quite sure how to figure out what exactly that was. I kept telling myself that I was wasting time trying to figure it out or waiting for Him to show me. Or that I wasn't qualified to do the things I thought He might be telling me to do. The answer for me was found in the pages of the Bible, as I learned how to understand what it was actually saying. If you are ready to grow in your faith and to step confidently into the calling God has for you, then join me as we dig deep into God's word so you can learn to live out your faith in your everyday life. Friend, you are loved, you are cherished, and you are His. The Hearing Jesus Podcast will encourage and equip you to step into the calling God has for your life, living out your faith in the everyday. Together we will break down walls that keep us from growing spiritually. We will dig deep into our Bibles to understand and connect the Scriptures to our lives. We will boldly obey what God calls us to do, walking through doors that only He can open. Join me for your daily dose of faith, honesty, and prayer. How do we raise kids who love Christ? Renowned author and speaker Lisa Bevere knows what it's like to feel disqualified because of past mistakes. Though Lisa and her husband, John of Messenger International, are known all over the world now, Lisa grew up in a home where she was shunned, cut off, and mocked after becoming a Christian in college. On this episode of Unapologetic Lisa speaks openly about what life was like before she met Christ, how she told her sons about her past, and how she and her husband raised their four adult sons to walk with and love the Lord. Julia and Lisa also discuss: how and when to share your past experiences with your kids, practical ways to raise kids to love Christ, and navigating relationships if you're the first, or only, Christian in your family. “I think it was important that my sons heard not just regret, but redemption in my story.” —Lisa Bevere Lisa's newest book, Fiercely Loved, is available now! REBROADCAST: This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm talking with international minister and best-selling author, John Bevere. He and his wife, Lisa, are the founders of Messenger International--a ministry committed to developing uncompromising followers of Christ who transform our world. John's heart to strengthen the local church has led to over 40 million translated resources being given to pastors and leaders in developing nations. When he's home in Colorado, you can find John playing card games with his family or trying to convince Lisa to take up golf. We're talking about: Everyone has been given unique gifts to fulfill the calling on their life. Your goal should be to identify your gifts, develop them, then multiply them. There's no a separation between secular and sacred ministries. The anointing is the enhancer of our gifts. We may be very gifted, but without anointing, we can't move people at their core. It's the difference between natural impact and eternal impact. God anticipates that we multiply our giftings. Over 50% of Christians don't know they're supernaturally gifted. If they do, they think it's automatic. "In serving God, there is always a testing period before we are anointed or appointed." We need to study the word to understand the inner workings of the body of Christ. The parts of the body that are unseen are more valuable than the parts that are seen and the entire body must work together. God equates faithfulness with multiplication and laziness with maintenance. He doesn't micromanage us, He has made us stewards of our gifts. We multiply our gifts when we ask God every day what He would have us do. Let's get real practical: This week's exercise is included in my Intentional Influencer workbook. Ask yourself what gifts, passions, and talents you possess and look for threads. Don't forget to tag me on Instagram so I can see what you learned!
