Buckle up for Part Two of our conversation with the always entertaining Steve Sedahl! This episode dives into the wild world of two lesser-known TV shopping networks Steve worked at — stories you definitely haven't heard before. But before the laughs, we touch on a somber note — the recent and unfortunate closure of Minnesota's own ShopHQ (formerly Evine, Evine Live, ShopNBC and ValueVIsion), and what it means for the many employees affected. It's a rollercoaster of stories, surprises, and showbiz nostalgia you won't want to miss! Financial Pizza podcast on Spotify Financial Pizza Podcast on Apple Podcasts

Frank Murphy's friend Avi McCullah is today's co-host. Avi worked on-air at Jewelry Television and ShopNBC, where she sold high-end men's watches. Avi bought her shirt at T.J. Maxx on the way to the podcast. Frank saw an article titled “The TJ Maxx where Amber Heard was spotted shopping is actually a celebrity hot spot — and a Hamptons secret gem.” Avi will visit T.J. Maxx when she is traveling. Frank admits doing the same thing at Kohl's. It's easier to find orange clothing outside of Knoxville. Avi has purchased orange jewelry out of town. Frank says that UT orange (PMS 151) helps you blend in like camouflage in East Tennessee. Avi left the tags on the shirt in case she decides not to keep it. Frank tried on shirts at a grocery store with a clothing department and started to sweat when his size was too tight. At other stores, the same size might be too loose. Frank broke a chair onstage by bouncing on it during an Einstein Simplified show. Audience member Heather took a picture at the moment that Frank realized the seat of the chair had cracked. As a kid Frank disliked posing for photos. A local bank had a promotion offering families a chance to pose for a portrait in the bank's lobby. Frank got upset at how he looked. His discomfort was visible in the photo. He stormed off and walked two miles home rather than ride with his parents and sisters. Avi was allowed to play outside unsupervised until sundown. In Frank's childhood neighborhood, one of the moms would ring a bell when it was time for her kids to come home. Other moms told their kids to come home when the streetlights came on. Avi and her mom enjoy visiting museums in Washington, DC. Frank goes to the DC suburbs so often that it doesn't occur to him to go downtown. Avi also likes playing tourist in Knoxville. She has several favorite restaurants. Avi likes to go to Curious Dog Hotdogs & Sandwiches in downtown Knoxville. Frank thought the spicy mustard and sauerkraut dog at D & B's Hot Dogs and Ice Cream reminded him of New York. Avi says Brazilians put mashed potatoes and potato sticks on their hot dogs. Prior to moving to Knoxville, Frank would not have known to put coleslaw on a barbeque sandwich. Frank only wants to eat Peruvian chicken when he's in the DC area. He would rather find a local restaurant than a national chain. He likes to eat at Three Li'l Pigs Barbeque in Daleville, Virginia, when traveling along I-81. Avi likes supporting local businesses and their entrepreneurial spirit. When Frank and his wife Jere went out to dinner before going to see Bright Star in Morristown. They ordered veal parmesan at The Little Dutch Restaurant, which has been there since 1939. Avi recommends that Frank and Jere make an excursion to Chattanooga. She goes there often to visit the “medieval barber,” the guy she is dating. Avi suggests Frank take a Myers–Briggs personality test online. Her type is found in only 1.7% of women. Frank gets paralysis by analysis when trying to think up a new password for a website. This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. The Middleburg Barn is a perfect venue with rustic luxury for your wedding or special event. Located 40 miles outside D.C and 25 minutes from Dulles Airport. Frank Murphy's friend Avi McCullah is today's co-host. Avi worked on-air at Jewelry Television and ShopNBC, where she sold high-end men's watches. She would fly from Knoxville to Minnesota to appear on ShopNBC. Frank's figs are in season. He has been harvesting about 60 figs per day this week. He accidentally broke off a branch of a fig tree and is trying to ripen the figs from that branch by placing it in water. Avi has lied to her sons about figs. She told them that natural fig bars are called “pop tarts.” When they ask for a pop tart, they get a fig bar. Figs are inverted flowers. Frank says the taste and texture of his Brown Turkey figs remind him of oatmeal with brown sugar. Frank brought 24 figs to a meeting of a non-profit organization. As the chairperson was trying to start the meeting, another man started telling Frank about the laxative effects of figs, which is something Frank appreciates. Avi is dating someone who told her, “Let thy food be thy medicine.” Frank asks if she is dating a medieval barber. Avi asks if you can make fig jam or preserves without sugar. The fig jam recipe Frank and his wife Jere use calls for 3 cups of mashed figs, 3 cups of sugar, and two small boxes of lemon Jell-O. Avi asks if you can make fruit leather with figs. Fruit leather is like a natural fruit roll-up. The concept is similar to soft beef jerky. Frank watched an Adam Ragusea video about making beef jerky. Avi wants to learn old methods of food preservation. Frank says that canning fig preserves is easier than he feared. You can vacuum seal the mason jars by putting them in boiling water for a certain amount of time. The topic of canning reminds Frank of an episode of Visiting with Huell Howser in which Huell and cameraman Louie Fuerte visit a tuna cannery. Frank recalls Huell being amazed that they cook the tuna in the can. The episode is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/cxuzj-k-XuU When Avi uses the word schniblet, Frank says it's the secret word and that they should get an extra $100 between them. As a kid, he used to stay up late to watch Groucho Marx on reruns of You Bet Your Life. Avi says she gets self-conscious on camera. Frank once needed to find a co-host for a project called SMOMOTV and he asked Avi. They recorded a show in an extra room at a brochure printing plant between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Avi taught Frank to buy a cheap bronzer but an expensive makeup brush. Avi says the medieval barber doesn't have prepared foods in his pantry. Frank mentions that there is a sales tax holiday in Tennessee during August on some food products that could be called staples or ingredients. Prepared food items and candy are not included. Avi says that snack foods in England have fewer ingredients than the same products in the United States. She is trying to be aware of the ingredients in her food now that she has turned 40. DelRae was the developer of her own nutraceutical line, Dr. DelRae Detox & Weight Loss System and has been featured on ShopNBC with Suzanne Somers, Fit and Firm Magazine, Natural Muscle Magazine, Southwest Metro Magazine, local and regional radio, and contributes to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. DelRae transitioned from her online business and manufacturing her own nutraceutical weight loss system to choosing network marketing after hitting rock bottom emotionally, physically, and financially. After years marketing her products in the competitive online space and learning about the lack of integrity and quality of products, she was searching for a company to partner with to focus on what she loved most -- people. What drove her decision to choose Isagenix was the values of the company, quality of the products, vision of the owners and the impact she could make in people's lives. She was introduced to Isagenix through Angelike Norrie and was moved by her ability to connect with her WHY, which is to leave a lasting legacy for her daughters and create a movement of wellness with global impact. She now considers herself a Mompreneur and is committed to helping others achieve their goals and crate time and financial freedom in their lives through the business of network marketing. She now considers herself a Mompreneur and is committed to helping others achieve their goals and create time and financial freedom in their lives through the business of network marketing. She is currently working on writing a book about her journey from rock bottom to a million dollar global, virtual business and is working on a passion project in the nutrition space to alleviate food insecurity and children't health.
