Buckle up for Part Two of our conversation with the always entertaining Steve Sedahl! This episode dives into the wild world of two lesser-known TV shopping networks Steve worked at — stories you definitely haven't heard before. Then, we get into what everyone's been waiting for: how Steve landed a role on Comedy Central's cult classic Let's Bowl, and what it was really like behind the scenes. But before the laughs, we touch on a somber note — the recent and unfortunate closure of Minnesota's own ShopHQ (formerly Evine, Evine Live, ShopNBC and ValueVIsion), and what it means for the many employees affected. It's a rollercoaster of stories, surprises, and showbiz nostalgia you won't want to miss! Financial Pizza podcast on Spotify Financial Pizza Podcast on Apple Podcasts

Cohen Military Family Clinic at Easterseals discussed Cohen Veterans Network , a national not-for-profit network of mental health clinics for post-9/11 veterans, active duty service members, National Guard and Reserves, and their families, providing high-quality, accessible care.  Founded in 2016 by philanthropist Steven A. Cohen, the network began in part because his son served in the United States Marine Corps. CVN currently has 22 Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics in high-need communities across the country serving 20 states, providing services in-person or via CVN Telehealth, face-to-face video therapy for the entire military family including spouses or partners, children, siblings, parents, caregivers and others as defined by the veteran or service member.  They treat a number of mental health challenges including depression, anxiety, PTSD, adjustment issues, anger, grief and loss, family issues, transition challenges, relationship problems, and children's behavioral problems.  Concentrated programming addresses suicide risk and couples therapy.    In honor of Veterans Day they offered ways to bridge the civilian-military gap including flying an American flag, donating to a veteran service organization, or buying a veteran a meal. They also offer a Veterans Pop 101 Quiz to test your knowledge about veterans to gain a better understanding about veterans and the military community.  You can also watch PsychArmor's 15 Things Veterans Want You To Know.  It's all found at cohenveteransnetwork.org/veteransday.

In February 2012, Denton Ward and Lauren Crisp, along with Samantha Bean and another friend, went to McDonald's, where Denton Ward was violently assaulted by Marcus Jones and a mob of other attackers. Lauren Crisp and Samantha Bean carried a bleeding Denton Ward to his SUV in an attempt to get him to the hospital. The driver, Samantha Bean, ran a red light and collided with another car. Denton Ward was killed and Lauren Crisp, who was unrestrained and tending to Denton Ward's injuries, was also killed. Despite the defense's attempts to shift focus away from McDonald's ongoing lack of concern for customer safety at a restaurant location with a history of late-night violence and to blame Samantha Bean for reckless driving, a Brazos County, Texas jury assigned 97 percent of the responsibility to McDonald's and returned a verdict of $27,000,000 in damages.   Guest Bio: Chris Hamilton Chris Hamilton has established himself as one of the leading high-stakes trial lawyers in the United States. In this episode, I have an excellent conversation with Jenna Carlton about the Millenial Veterans and the challenges they face in the transition from military service to civilian life.  Jenna joined the Navy in 2013 and began training as an Aerographer's Mate studying meteorology and oceanography. During her four years, she went underway on several ships and completed a deployment on CVN 75, Harry S. Truman, in efforts of Operation Inherent Resolve. In 2017, Jenna was honorably discharged and used her GI Bill to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy at St. Mary's College of Maryland. She did a summer internship at the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs where she discovered her passion for helping veterans but was discouraged by the bureaucracy of Congress. In 2020, while job searching, Navy Veteran Jenna became active in the online veteran community and started a support group for younger veterans and transitioning service members called The Millennial Veterans. The group offers resources, shared experiences, and a lot of laughs through online interactions making veterans feel less isolated and normalizing the hardships of becoming a civilian again. The Millennial Veterans share amazing stories of our veterans and keep positive conversations flowing through weekly interviews on IG Live called Vet Chats. If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? First and foremost, I would like to give my thanks to the veterans who have served and to the families of veterans who have served on this Memorial Day. There are links in the episode notes for those of you who might be struggling to find your way back home from your service. Remember, there is no weakness in seeking help–there is only strength in the recognition that we accomplish the most as a species when we work together. So, if you need help; reach out for it. It is there for you. Now, as for the podcast information: there is not going to be a full episode this week. I have been away for a few days at a family member's wedding. I just couldn't get the editing finished for the episode, and I didn't want to rush it. This next episode is going to be epic–as the kids like to say. It focuses on a book by clinical psychologist Dr. John Rosegrant and his reading of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Honestly, it's a fascinating conversation. I enjoyed it very much and I'm looking forward to bringing it to you all next week. So, hit the subscribe/follow button and turn on notifications so you can be in the know for when it goes live next week. Until then, try to keep one foot firmly planted on neutral ground, and have a great day. We also talk through who the Navy is right for long term and how personal and professional goals need to align staying in the service. Dr. Hassan is a veteran of the United States Army and Air Force with 30 years of experience in military behavioral health. He holds a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the University of South Florida and is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School. You can connect with Anthony here:  Cohen Veterans Network, Email What If Fellowship: https://whatif.vc/fellowship   HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT: Anthony Hassan talks about his 30 years of experience in the military, focusing on the mental health of active-duty service members. We discuss the unique problems military members and veterans face regarding mental health and why finding help isn't easy. We discussed the stigma around mental health specifically in the military and veteran communities and why it seems to be worse at times than in other communities. Anthony explained what mental health care services are in place for veterans, and where the gaps exist today and how the Cohen Veteran Network was created to fill those gaps. We talk about the workforce inside the clinics, the shortage of mental health workers in America, and how the Cohen Veterans Network fosters their network of clinicians on staff. The Cohen Veterans Network is continually experimenting with new technological advances and cutting-edge treatments that they believe can help veterans with their mental health. The CVN platform has become an incubator or pilot partner of choice for many up-and-coming technologies serving the mental health space. Anthony shares what the long-term goals are for the clinics and what is needed in terms of support to make those goals a reality.   Connect with the Stigma Podcast in the following ways: What If Fellowship, Website, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Email Connect with host Stephen Hays here: Stephen Hays Personal Website, Twitter, LinkedIn, What If Ventures (Mental Health Venture Fund)

Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents   Guest Bios: Chris Hamilton Chris Hamilton has established himself as one of the leading high-stakes trial lawyers in the United States. Sam Whitehurst, your host, is addressing a very difficult subject in today’s episode: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of our veterans.  We are all facing the challenges that are implied in dealing with this pandemic — challenges such as the fear of the disease itself, the rise of unemployment rates, the economic situation in the following months, and even years, and the lasting impact of social distancing. How are the anxiety and stress caused by the current situation impacting the mental health of our veterans and their families?   Sam is joined today by Dr. Caitlin Thompson, who is the vice-president for Community Partnerships at the Cohen Veterans Network, which is a network of health care clinics across the U.S. that focuses on providing mental health assistance to veterans and their families. Dr. Thompson shares today the mission and vision of Cohen Veterans Network, the work they are doing in response to the pandemic, and she also talks about her thoughts in regards to what we can do to ensure that our veterans and families continue to have access to mental health services to prevent the rise of suicide rates among our veterans.   Key Takeaways: [5:58] Dr. Caitlin Thompson talks about her professional background and her work at the Cohen Veterans Network. [11:05] The issue of access to mental health not only for the veterans but for their families. [13:35] How COVID-19  is impacting veterans and their families in regards to access to mental health? [16:15] Ninety-eight percent of the care Cohen Veterans Network provides is via telehealth. [17:20] Social isolation tends to be a high risk factor for suicide and mental health problems. [18:11] CVN Presents has continuously updated information, videos, and groups to engage the community in other types of activities besides therapy. [19:16] The stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment. [20:28] Dr. Thompson addresses the concern in regard to confidentiality while working with telehealth. [23:45] CVN believes that if you served one day at the military, you deserve care. [25:55] Dr. Thompson talks about the challenges people are experiencing using telehealth. [30:17] How to help a family member that has suicidal thoughts? [33:20] Dr. Thompson encourages people to continue to reach out for the care that they need.   Mentioned in this episode: Dixon Center: Reaching America At Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Services, we believe our veterans and military families can succeed where they live. Dixon Center is named after Staff Sergeant Donnie Dixon, who was killed in action on September 29, 2007, in Iraq. Staff Sergeant Dixon was a father, husband, and soldier who always placed the mission first and the safety of his fellow soldiers above his own. Long range strike and long range counter-air.Some real old ones are coming back in to the lexicon: ABM.Some new ones have joined the party as well - ASBM and super sonic ASCM.Of course, they never really left us.After the post-Soviet softness of the 1990s and the decade plus of COIN and small wars - the big toys are coming back. Old and new. From Russia, China, Iran, & India - technology is reaching back out and spreading out.Where does that leave the US military in 2012 (NB: original air date of this show)? Few leaders under the age of 45 even remember operating in the Cold War disciplines that peer technology required; range, EMCON, defense in depth.Global reach will require more and better AAW, deep strike, I&W - it will also require a renewed understanding that for a Fleet at sea - the enemy gets a vote, and a shot. Our guest for the full hour to discuss in detail will be Will Dossel, CAPT USN (Ret), a former E-2C NFO with over 3500 hours and 525 traps in the E-2C and other TACAIR. Retiring after 26 years, he held a number of Navy and Joint operational and staff positions afloat and ashore including VAW squadron command, CVN navigator, Deputy Director for Strategy and Policy, Navy Planner, and Reconnaissance Systems Officer. Currently employed as a senior analyst with a top 5 defense firm, he has been heavily involved in the policy and operational side of ballistic and cruise missile defense the past seven years.
