Fr. Anthony Amato is the Pastor of St. Peter's Parish in Clifton Springs, New York. He was ordained as a priest in June of 2017 by Bishop Salvatore Matano of the Diocese of Rochester, New York. In Today's Show Do you have to be Confirmed for at least three years before entering Seminary? This is what I heard and I'm wondering if this is true, as I'm discerning a vocation. Is it OK if the priest is dipping the host into the precious blood and then placing it on the communicant's tongue? Does this have anything to do with post-Covid practices? I volunteer at a local hospice where I deliver Communion. They recently enhanced their disease control protocols and want to have Ministers of the Holy Eucharist to attach a bottle of disinfectant to the burse string carrying the pyx with a consecrated host. My first impulse is that attaching items to the burse or string seems disrespectful, but it might also tend to weaken the string, ultimately enhancing the chances the pyx could fall to the ground when the burse string breaks. Is there any Church rule against attaching miscellaneous items to the burse or string? If I have little faith, will I still go to heaven? I was staying with my son in Florida with no car. I got ready for 5PM Sunday Mass, went downstairs, and no one was there. I checked and they were all upstairs. Knowing how tired they were, I didn't wake them and therefore I missed Mass. I have not yet been able to go to confession and it looks like I missed the Penance service here in Texas for Easter. I really want Communion - can I go? Why do animals have to suffer from the Fall? I have a friend who is cohabitating who asked me to buy a bed for him and his girlfriend. Would this be construed as helping them in sin if I were to buy them a bed, and would I also be in sin? I have a daughter cohabitating with a man who is divorced (not Catholic) and not working because he does not want to pay his ex-wife alimony. I have been helping out with the rent since my daughter's income does not always cover all of her expenses. Again, I feel like I am helping her in sin and I wonder if I'm in mortal sin for doing so? Should civil unions be considered the same as a normal Catholic sacramental marriage? Trying to put the topic of demons into the correct context. Our Lord cast out demons. Do you think non-Catholics and Catholics who fall into mortal sin become influenced by demons? I'm in a spot where I'm making progress by grace in accepting God intellectually, but I still don't feel the history of Jesus saving us on the Cross is real, despite there not being any better explanation for the events that took place after His death until His disciples went in the world convinced He fulfilled His promise of resurrection. It's difficult to connect with God and I find myself like making circles around Him and debating heretics and atheists in my own mind constantly instead of living the truth, and I feel weak and unable to defend my faith. Do you have any specific advice here? I attend the Traditional Latin Mass but at my parish they are not able to celebrate the Traditional Mass on the 1st Sunday of every month. I believe this is due to the implementation of Traditionis Custodes in our diocese. Is it wrong for me to drive to a different parish on the 1st Sunday of every month to still attend the Traditional Mass? You know the one I mean - the one I mean. The one where we are honest with ourselves. Just got back from Rogue - got me to thinking about doing my homework (explain the coffee situation there and what we did) Then starting thinking about SRF 1 and 2 and ways we could have better equipped sponsors, vendors and attendees with information in advance of the festival and realized we had more homework to do as well as a 9 hour drive. I am very good at handling changing demands of an event with grace, but if I do my homework, there are fewer of these issues. What do I mean by doing your homework? Post meeting follow ups the same day Preparing a thank you note in advance of an event where one will be needed gets that small but important task done Thinking through big projects and identifying production needs, then doing them BEFORE deadline Looking into the background of people and things that you must know about to be successful (SRF Speakers) Establishing project goals and planning how to achieve them Setting up systems so that post event items get cleaned and stowed efficiently The list is endless. And therein lies the rub. The key to finding success and easing your life by doing your homework is knowing which homework you truly must do. If you don;t change your hvac filters, you end up with a huge mess. Likewise, if you do not thank your sponsors or other supporters, you damage the relationship. And usually these kinds of problems stem from not doing your homework in advance. Usually these things keep us from doing our homework: Fear of failure Overcommittment or overwhelmedness Disorganization Distraction Depression All are excuses when you embrace who is in control of your life and schedule. So how then, do we hold ourselves accountable while maintaining that all important health-relationship-work-fun balance? Separate the important form the busywork (Example - coaching call transcript vs coaching call summary. Communicate better - underpromise and overdeliver rather than over promise and underdeliver. Eg - someone wants something now From planning events, to executing things well on your homestead, to interacting with people better - homework is something that is easy to put off. Part of this is because we are expected to do things that are busy work - like filing our tax reports. And because things like taxes come with a heavy consequence if you do not do the busywork, we have become trained to not separate the true homework that is important from the busywork that it is easy to assign ourselves because we feel good when we do it. You know - that endorphin rush you get when you click things off your list? But imagine what it is like when you DO set yourself up for doing your homework? Think of how SRF check in will be when we have everyone with parking passes in advance. When vendor spaces are on a map and assigned? Or think of how easy it is to add people to your table when you have a plan for dinner and a deep pantry? Or how about when you have a template email ready to go to confirm things? What You’ll Get Out Of Today’s Show Do you want to give your children the tools they need to guarantee their path to financial independence? If you give them the right skills, becoming a millionaire can be a mathematical certainty. Achieving the objective of becoming a millionaire isn’t nearly as important as the process of getting there. Success is in the journey. For many of us, we made a lot of mistakes before finding the right information and learning that there is a better way. When you understand the power of compounding, you know how plausible it is to become a millionaire, and what you need to put away each month to get there. Much of the journey comes down to mindset, empowerment, and believing that you can make changes to better your life. It starts with the little changes that make your life 1% better. It’s time to stretch the tactics we use and apply them to a different age bracket. We generally talk about investing timelines starting around the age of 20. But how early could you really get started and why would you want to get started at an earlier age? For Brad, the reason is dual-pronged. He thinks the concept of saving for retirement is misdirected and he would frame it differently. Retirement is so far in the future, it’s harder to get behind during your younger years. However, the concept of financial independence is something people are more willing to take action on. Financial independence means you can control your time and have the autonomy to make decisions and you can take advantage of retirement vehicles such as 401Ks and Roth IRAs to reach FI. Financial independence is a better framework for talking about and planning what it is you want to do with your life as well as giving yourself options. The Make Your Kid a Millionaire article emphasizes Roth IRAs. Bradd says there has never been a great explanation of how people can take advantage of a Roth IRA for children who have earned income. Most children don’t have jobs that allow them to contribute to a 401K, 403b, or 457. A source of earned income does allow them to make after-tax contributions to a Roth IRA where that money can grow tax-free forever. A 12-year-old will have 47 years of compound growth before making withdrawals. All of the growth, dividends, and capital gains distributions will be tax-free compared to an investment account where they would be taxed. The current limit for Roth IRAs is $6,000, but you may only put as much of that limit in as you have earned. A child earning $5,000 in a year would only be able to contribute $5,000, not the $6,000 limit. Although ChooseFI doesn’t generally suggest the Roth IRA as the first investment vehicle to use, the strategy is different for children. For adults, some financial independence strategies help to control your marginal tax rate using specific pre-tax retirement accounts. When adults are in a low marginal tax bracket, an argument can be made for locking in the low tax rate with Roth contributions. However, children with much lower incomes, already have low marginal tax rates. Since they can generally only choose from traditional or Roth IRAs, it’s likely in their best interest to pay the small amount of tax and then shelter that income from taxes for the rest of their lives. Although allowance and pay for chores around the house don’t count for earned income, there are some categories of work kids may do that do count but you’ll want to be careful documenting, such as newspaper routes, babysitting, mowing lawns at other people’s homes, acting, photography, acting, modeling, or working for a parental-owned business. Regular jobs at private or public companies that comply with your state’s child labor laws definitely count as earned income. In the article, an example used discusses a child who mows lawns and earns $4,000. His parents decide to contribute $3,000 to a Roth IRA. The contribution does not need to be made with the exact same money the child earns. Parents or grandparents could make the contribution as long as it does not exceed the earned income or IRA contribution limits. Matching programs are a great way to teach financial lessons. Similar to a company 401K match, parents or grandparents could incentivize a child to contribute to their Roth IRA by agreeing to match contributions dollar for dollar, or two dollars for every one. If a 9-year-old were to put $3,000 into a Roth IRA once, never contribute again, and not touch it until the traditional retirement age of 64, that child would have almost $124,000. With the power of compounding, a child needs to contribute just $1,500 each year of their lives to ensure a million dollars at a retirement age of 64. In contrast, someone waiting until the age of 31 to begin investing and maxes out their Roth IRA with $6,000 each year until age 64 will only have $764,000. The difference between the two net worths is the result of the powers of compounding and time. The Rule of 72 is a way to predict how many years will take your money to double based on an interest rate. You take the number 72 and divide it by your interest rate. 72 divided by an interest rate of 7% results in money doubling roughly every 10 years. Compounding on a big number adds up quickly. A child could theoretically put in a large amount for just a few years, never contribute again, and end up with a higher net worth than with the $1,500 each example. The article contains different scenarios to help foster the conversations parents can have with their children about the impact time can have. Break through the initial resistance to get started and set up a system to reinforce good financial habits so that your child can build their own trust fund. It’s hard to put a price tag on the psychology of teaching your kids about investing early. They will have a better foundation and desire to learn and get even better. It’s good to teach them the time value of money while they aren’t relying on it to pay for their survival needs. Setting the ContextWhy do we procrastinate? Newton’s First Law of Motion and the perfectionist standard.Four Things We Can Do to Stop Procrastinating:Focus. In How Memory Works, memory expert Robert Madigan discusses the principle of how we can pay better attention. And since attention is directly related to our productivity, I thought this was a perfect example. Start with asking yourself why you’re procrastinating. Also, knowing why you are doing the task will keep your energy high. (What is possible if I achieve my goal? Why do I want this?)The principle of “Just One Step.” Just focus on taking the first step. Decide for yourself if it’s going to be the hardest or easiest step. Chunking aka the Chris method. I’ve heard this from coaches online and published authors who have a tough time writing content. (Yes - even they get writing blocks). Let your drafts be drafty. Let your work be crappy at first. Then revise, revise, revise.Accountability. Self care is so important to your physical and mental health. It’s having a moment right now and it’s so much more than face masks and manicures. How you practice self care is unique to you and what you need right now. In today’s show we cover what self care is, why you need it, ways to practice it and how to incorporate it or double down on it. Small Steps in the Show: Do an audit of your day and week to see how you’re doing with your self care. Reflect on what makes you feel good (that isn’t directly in service to other people). Try 1-2 of those out to see how they feel right now. Make space for them and let your partner/family know. Depending on your personality, maybe have an accountability partner. Try other things or let things go that don’t feel like they’re working, if you find you’re still doing them. Make space for more self care, if you’re light on it and you feel like you need it. Practice kindness towards yourself. See if there’s something you can take off your plate. Do something you know always makes you feel good that you can easily do. It can be as simple as getting sleep and eating a nourishing meal. Take note of how that felt in your body/mind so you can catch it sooner next time. In addition to being mentored by Tom and Lynn Givens and other Rangemaster instructors, Tiffany has also trained under Jim Higginbotham, John Farnam, Craig Douglas, Massad Ayoob, Jeff Gonzales, Marshall Luton, and several respected veterans of the self-defense community. She is member of the NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation, and she has earned instructor credentials from the State of Tennessee, the State of Mississippi, the National Rifle Association, Massad Ayoob Group, and Rangemaster (Advanced Instructor Certification). Tiffany is also a lawyer and a teacher, teaching college courses at the University of Memphis where she coordinates their legal studies program. Prior to starting her own business as a freelance legal writer and researcher, she practiced personal injury and civil rights law. About Aqil Qadir: Aqil is the founder and lead instructor of Citizens Safety Academy. His background as a firearms instructor started at age 12, teaching urban youth in his father’s gun club. He followed in his dad’s footsteps, becoming an NRA Certified Instructor at the age of 22. Together they have been teaching Handgun Carry Permit classes since 1993.
