SD Worx Ireland, a leading payroll and HR solutions provider, has announced the results of its latest survey which reveals one in five (21%) employees in Ireland confess to misusing leave policies and taking absences without a valid reason. However, 40% claim their team is experiencing issues related to employee absenteeism - suggesting employees are not owning up to it, or their colleagues are overly suspicious. The independent study was carried out by iVOX on behalf of SD Worx and surveyed 1,000 employees in Ireland to gain insights into the current job market and the concerns amongst today's workforces. Additionally, it exposes some common grievances among employees in Ireland and found that almost half (49%) feel they are underpaid for the work that they do. It also suggests that employees are feeling overworked, with 46% saying that their team is facing staff shortages and struggling to keep up with their current workload. This increases to nearly half (48%) of employees who expect their team to face worsening talent shortages over the coming years. Compounding these challenges, 43% of employees believe their team's skills gap cannot be easily filled. Despite this, 44% say they are strict with their workloads and schedules, solely focusing on what is necessary and not working overtime. Amidst these rising pressures, the survey found that 44% of employees in Ireland are currently looking for a new job, but 60% of those surveyed admit that it is difficult to find a job within the labour market right now. However, 63% of employees are motivated and passionate about their work, while 62% say that they would recommend their organisation to a friend looking for a job. Eimear Byrne, Country Leader, SD Worx Ireland, said: "This research highlights a growing sense of dissatisfaction among Ireland's workforce. With 39% of respondents saying their manager struggles with effective leadership, it's clear that many employees feel they're lacking valuable guidance and mentorship. As a result, we are now seeing a knock-on effect with more people actively seeking to change jobs and widespread concerns about staff shortages, as well as underpayment. This comes as the EU Pay Transparency Directive is due to be transposed into Irish law in June 2026 - if done right, this could be an opportunity to alleviate employees' pay concerns and help to build trust. "Ireland is at full employment and organisations are facing a critical need to re-evaluate how they engage and support employees. The changing economic landscape is making businesses more conservative and they are under increased pressure to keep operations running smoothly, while trying to retain talent. With skills shortages and rising absenteeism in the mix, it's becoming harder to strike that balance. Now is the time to invest in people strategies and provide employees with the support, development opportunities, and workplace culture they need to thrive. This will allow businesses to secure and retain top tier talent while also building more resilient and engaged workforces for the future." See more stories here.

In this special Arrivée episode, Rose Manley and Rebecca Charlton look back at the first Grand Tour of the year for the women's peloton, the Vuelta Femenina. The race marks the first World Tour stage race to see top rivals Anna Van der Breggen and Demi Vollering go head-to-head. Vollering may have had the edge so far this season but Van der Breggen has found further form since her comeback. And then there's fellow SD Worx alumnus Marlen Reusser who separated the two Dutch rivals on the podium at Setmana Valenciana earlier in the year. So where will the fabled red jersey land this time? We are hitting the road for this month's episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin. Join Rose Manley and Denny Gray in their little Bar Tabac just a stone's throw from the famous Paris Roubaix cobbles. They'll be calling up Rebecca Charlton to collectively cast an eye over this season's early Classics. Talk inevitably turns to SD Worx who have been the most successful of the teams so far, although they certainly haven't had it all their way. Their stars Lotte Kopecky and Lorena Wiebes have managed some mighty solo wins, often without the powerful team support that we've come to expect. Plus we transport our listeners to the pavé of Northern France in our mini feature. Follow along with Rose and Denny in a mad dash to the velodrome as they cover Paris-Roubaix Femmes. Soak up the atmosphere and hear from the likes of Paris-Roubaix debutant Imogen Wolff, former men's champion Magnus Backstedt and former Pédaleuse de Charme Marthe Truyen. We'll also be looking ahead to what is set to be a thrilling Ardennes Classic season with the return of the gripping rivalry between Anna Van der Breggen and Demi Vollering. Also on the agenda: good luck high fives, a mystery butterfly and Denny's got his crystal balls out again. Rose Manley and Jo Rowsell cast their eye over one of the most hotly anticipated races of the year, Milano-Sanremo Donne. The last time the race was staged for women was 20 years ago, leaving plenty of intrigue over how it would be approached by this current crop of riders. This season's battle of SD Worx versus Demi Vollering was expected to continue into this race. The Dutch team boasted both World Champion Lotte Kopecky and super sprinter Lorena Wiebes in their line-up, making them the team to beat. However, former alumnus Vollering – now of FDJ Suez – got the better of them at Strade Bianche and looked to do it again on the famous climbs of the Cipressa and Poggio. There were plenty of contenders for the inaugural Milano Sanremo Donne title elsewhere too. Trofeo Binda champion Elisa Balsamo heads up Lidl-Trek, Elisa Longo Borghini looks to make a big impression as Italian champion and Kasia Niewiadoma races for the first time since her Strade Bianche crash. Welcome back to Spin Cycle! We kick things off by diving headfirst into the opening weekend of the classics: Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.First up, Omloop. What a weird day of racing, especially from the women's peloton. How and why did FDJ and SD Worx let the break get 15 minutes? It was a game of chicken where everyone ended up as a chicken. In the men's race, the surprise came in the finale as small groups came back together, which they don't usually do, resulting in a bigger bunch sprint than we've seen in years. At least a lovely old lady got her Arnaud de Lie moment. At Kuurne, Kaden Groves got a yellow card and Jasper Philipsen was fastest. Is Caley's Jonathan Milan draft pick already looking foolish? At Tour du Rwanda, the final stage was cancelled due to bad conditions. Not a great sign ahead of the planned World Championships later this year. Finally, we like to end the show on a high note, so last up is the news that the 2027 Tour de France might start in the UK. Jonny is ecstatic.
In the February episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin, Rose Manley, Orla Chennaoui and Jo Rowsell pick over the UAE Tour, a race which often offers up some key insight for the season ahead. Plus we look at some of the junior world champions of the past in our mini feature. There's plenty to discuss from the UAE Tour, as Elisa Longo Borghini took a commanding overall victory while Lorena Wiebes went almost unchallenged as she swept up all three sprint stages. Some other big favourites didn't fare so well though. Pauline Ferrand Prévot has made no secret of her Tour de France Femmes ambitions since her comeback but was noticeably absent among the first finishers on the top of Jebel Hafeet. While the new line-up at FDJ-Suez failed to take home a top ten on any stage. In our mini feature we speak to former and present junior world champions and see how they've fared since hitting the elite ranks. We hear from Lucy Van der Haar nee Garner who retired five years ago, Canyon-SRAM rider Zoe Backstedt, current junior champion Cat Ferguson and Laura Stigger who was scouted by Anna van der Breggen to join SD Worx this year. Also on the agenda… more baby news, some deserved gloating by Jo and reminiscing over Orla's car sickness. SD Worx Ireland, a leading payroll and HR solutions provider, has announced the results of its latest research which found that 30% of employers in Ireland cite pay equity as a top challenge when it comes to rewarding employees. To tackle this, nearly three-quarters (74%) of Irish organisations say they are investing in pay equity initiatives. The independent study was commissioned by SD Worx and carried out by iVOX among 1,000 employers in Ireland to gain insights into how organisations are rewarding their employees and addressing gender pay inequity in a changing and competitive talent landscape. The EU Pay Transparency Directive, which came into force in 2023, requires Irish organisations to report and provide transparency across key areas including pay equity and gender pay gaps. SD Worx's research found that some 49% of employers in Ireland are committed to pay transparency, which would see the pay level of employees being made available to employees of similar grade in the organisation. Moreover, 43% of organisations cite pay transparency as a top challenge when rewarding employees. As the war for talent continues to rage, businesses are adopting more strategic approaches to rewards. More than half (51%) of employers say their reward policy plays an essential role in their reputation as an employer. As such, 31% are offering flexible wage payment dates, which could include paying employees early, or paying on special request. Some employees have the flexibility to choose how they would like to be rewarded, and 31% of employers say that workers can put together their own reward package based on an allocated budget. Aside from salary, employee rewards offered by Irish employers include bonuses and commission (53%), health and wellness benefits (48%), and vouchers (45%). The survey suggests that the rising cost of doing business is having a significant impact on employers. Over half (51%) say that their organisation is struggling to strike a balance between attractive rewards and manageable labour costs. The same number of employers state that total wage costs are on the rise, while 42% cited wage cost pressures as another key challenge when it comes to rewarding employees. Eimear Byrne, Country Leader, SD Worx Ireland, said: "Tackling pay inequity needs to be at the forefront of employers' agendas in Ireland, as equal pay for equivalent work should be the rule, not the exception. Businesses of all sizes must establish structures to effectively manage their pay transparency obligations, especially as mandatory gender pay gap reporting is extending to organisations with more than 50 employees in 2025. "Businesses must place their team members at the core of all business decisions - particularly in relation to rewards and remuneration. Not only will this lead to happier, engaged, and productive employees who are more likely to stay long-term, it will also set organisations apart as they look to attract new, skilled workers. "The ever-increasing cost of doing business is being felt across the board, and our research shows that Irish employers are finding it difficult to balance what employees want and need with what the business can reasonably afford to do. To navigate these challenges effectively, organisations need to be capable of delivering transparent reporting and supporting wage cost projections. These tools are essential for businesses to ensure sustainable success." See more stories here. SD Worx Ireland, a leading payroll and HR solutions provider, has announced the results of their latest research which has revealed a trend of dissatisfaction with salary payments and processes among employees in Ireland. The research found that 21% of employees were paid late by their employers on several occasions in the last 12 months, while alarmingly, 27% reported errors in their salary calculations. The independent study was commissioned by SD Worx and carried out by iVOX among 1,000 employees in Ireland to gain insights into the efficiency and accuracy of payment processes in Ireland and how they are impacting the workforce. The findings point to a broader need for businesses to reassess how they manage payroll operations. The research also revealed that a significant portion of employees (39%) would prefer greater flexibility in choosing when they receive their salary, with the option for early access to better meet their financial needs. Moreover, transparency in payroll processes is a key issue with 10% of employees reporting that questions regarding their payslips remain unanswered, underscoring the need for clearer communication around payroll. This highlights the growing demand for payroll proficiency as employees seek greater autonomy over their finances. The survey suggests that as businesses continue to struggle with the hiring and retention of talented people, these issues could have a profound impact on their ability to do so. SD Worx's research found that 56% of employees consider salary to be the most important factor when choosing an organisation to work with. A similar proportion (54%), meanwhile, said that salary is a key factor for being engaged and motivated within an organisation. Given the motivational role that salary plays, unsurprisingly, some 40% of those surveyed said that dissatisfaction with their salary would be a main reason for leaving an employer. Eimear Byrne, Country Leader, SD Worx Ireland, said: "Getting payroll right and on-time is not just about compliance - it's about protecting the financial well-being of employees and sustaining a positive employer-employee relationship. A person's salary is deeply personal; it has a major and wide-reaching impact on employees' lives and enables them to pay their mortgage or rent, pay childcare costs, buy groceries, cover medical expenses, or even just buy a special gift for someone. "Payroll doesn't just impact the individual; it has a societal impact, too. By ensuring their payroll is clear and transparent, businesses can gain key insights into the equality and fairness of salary payments - helping them to determine areas for improvement. Part of this must include transparency for employees and ensuring that they understand how their salary figure is determined. This is also good for business, as our research underscores that an efficient and precise payroll process is crucial to fostering a motivated and loyal workforce. "At SD Worx, we see first-hand the influence that salary has on people's lives and encourage businesses to reassess their approach to payroll to ensure accuracy, openness and clarity for all employees. Our solution MegaPay empowers employers to analyse wage data, benchmark salaries, adjust pay frequencies and incorporate remuneration elements like travel allowances or performance bonuses, all while ensuring compliance with evolving payroll regulations. This helps businesses stay competitive while ensuring they can attract and retain top talent." See more stories here.

But also lining up were Tour de France Femmes champion Kasia Niewiadoma and Giro d'Italia champion Elisa Longo Borghini who come to the race with renewed confidence this year. SD Worx, formerly Intelligo, a leading payroll and HR solutions provider, has announced the results of its latest research which reveals the high levels of financial stress being felt by employees in Ireland. It found that nearly half (44%) of employees in Ireland are experiencing financial stress, while a third (33%) do not believe that their organisation shows concern for their financial wellbeing or reducing this stress. The independent study was commissioned by SD Worx and carried out by iVOX among 1,000 employees in Ireland to gain insights into their financial concerns and wellbeing. As the cost of living continues to rise, 41% of those surveyed believe that their employer did not adequately compensate for inflation last year, while 44% said that they would like to be able to request a salary advance. Just 28% of workers feel like they have a significant influence in their salary negotiations. SD Worx, which has software solutions that can support dynamic salary adjustments, including inflation-based salary reviews, found that many employees in Ireland believe they are not adequately compensated. Some 27% say they are dissatisfied with their complete reward package, which includes their salary, bonus, and other fringe benefits such as health insurance. The same percentage are not satisfied with the monetary part of their package such as the base salary and bonus. Meanwhile, 29% reported that personal performance is not sufficiently rewarded within their workplace. The survey also suggests that financial stress among employees can have a major impact on businesses. Some 23% of employees say that they would leave a job if they were dissatisfied with their financial stability and job security. Eimear Byrne, Country Leader, SD Worx Ireland, said: "In the current economic climate, organisations must take into account the impact that adequate rewards packages have on employees' financial wellbeing. Our research shows that employees are grappling with rising costs and are concerned with their financial stability. When not reflected by proportionate salary increases, the increasing cost of living amplifies the stress and pressure that employees and their families are placed under. "It's crucial that employers take a step back and understand the influence that this stress can have on their employees, both inside and outside of work. Payroll shouldn't be a silo - payroll and HR are closely linked, and they must work together to ensure a happy and well-rounded workforce. SD Worx Ireland, the leading payroll and HR solutions provider, has announced that it is investing €3 million to expand its payroll offering and roll the service out to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ireland. Historically servicing medium and large enterprises of over 250 employees, SD Worx's innovative payroll solution is now available to SMEs across all industries. The investment will span five years across technology, services, and people within SD Worx Ireland. During this timeframe, the company forecasts that 20% of its business will stem from SMEs and expects revenue growth from the SME sector of 60% per year. Driving the demand for the service among SMEs in Ireland are new reporting regulations, such as gender pay gap reporting. This requires increased payroll visibility and accuracy and applies to SMEs with over 150 employees for the first time this year, and those with more than 50 employees in 2025. Meanwhile, legislation relating to statutory sick pay and upcoming auto-enrolment for pensions brings additional administration, meaning smaller businesses may not have the necessary internal resources to keep pace with the rate of change. In addition to these challenges, according to SD Worx's Payroll Proficiency in Ireland report, the movement of personnel within organisations, such as joiners or leavers, is making payroll handling more difficult for a quarter (25%) of businesses in Ireland. Meanwhile, the administration of employee presence and absence (cited by 56%) was ranked as the process that complicates payroll the most. Data collection and access to, or integration of, data sources was also signalled as a challenge by 51% of organisations. SD Worx's €3M investment will ensure that all organisations, no matter their size, have access to the same resources as larger enterprises in overcoming these challenges. The company's investment covers the establishment of a dedicated team to support SMEs in Ireland, customisation of operational design, and technology upgrades. With these enhanced capabilities, within the next 12 months, the company expects to grow its customer base by up to 50 SMEs in sectors such as retail, hospitality, and construction, as well as customers in financial and professional services. The establishment of its SME service comes at a time when SD Worx is on an aggressive growth path in Ireland and will support its strategy in this area. In February, SD Worx announced that it will create 40 new jobs in Ireland in the next two years, growing its team to 115 as part of a €2.9M investment in its workforce. Ireland's fastest-growing payroll technology company, SD Worx has been operating in Ireland for nearly 30 years, previously as Intelligo until it was acquired by SD Worx in 2022. Its enterprise-grade payroll solution pays one in five employees in Ireland's corporate sector. Eimear Byrne, Country Lead, SD Worx Ireland, said: "We have scaled up our own capabilities so that businesses who may lack the necessary internal resources can keep pace with evolving payroll trends and requirements. SD Worx aims to empower SMEs to focus on their core business activities while leaving the complexities of payroll management to trusted professionals. Our new offering means that amid intense competition for top talent, increasing regulations and rising costs, SMEs can continue to grow and thrive with on-hand payroll support and cost certainty. "SMEs can often be stretched in terms of resources and this enhanced service will provide peace of mind for those who seek the reliability we offer by never missing a pay date or Revenue submission. The service will also guarantee that SMEs are compliant with regulations and effectively safeguarding confidential company and employee data. We are looking forward to working closely withorganisations in the SME space to drive value and underpin their continued success." Can anyone throw a spanner in the SD Worx this year or will it be a double for departing Demi? It's all eyes on Rotterdam for the Grand Depart of le troisieme Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. The Cycling Podcast Féminin has everything you need to know about what has quickly become the biggest race in women's cycling - the Tour de France Femmes. Rose Manley and Denny Gray take a close look at the eight stages that will take the riders from Rotterdam to the Alps across a week of racing. Special attention is paid to the upcoming Queen stage in our mini feature on Alpe d'Huez. While the men's peloton have visited the iconic climb 31 times at the Tour, the women last raced there over 30 years ago during the Tour Feminin. We investigate the origins of the Alpe's legend and speak to some female racers who have competed there in the past. Plus Rose and Denny weigh up who might be the biggest contenders for the fabled yellow jersey. While Demi Vollering has looked unbeatable across this year's stage races, she lines up at the Tour with a somewhat depleted SD Worx team who are missing some of their strongest domestiques. Meanwhile Kasia Niewiadoma has enjoyed something of a resurgence this year, supported by a Canyon-SRAM squad which continues to discover new depths. Plus no-one can discount Giro d'Italia winner Elisa Longo Borghini, looking to make it a Giro-Tour double. And while the racing is highly anticipated, so too are the cheese possibilities as Rose and Denny prepare to embark on their own Tour de France, where they will be doing daily podcasts on-the-ground, beginning on 12th August. In this month's episode of Féminin, Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Orla Chennaoui cast their eyes over recent racing at the Tour de Suisse and come dangerously close to speculation as they ponder what it might mean for the year's biggest races and beyond. Demi Vollering's winning run shows no signs of letting up after taking three stages and the overall win at the Tour de Suisse. But how much could her expected departure from SD Worx at the end of the season stifle her ambitions? And who are her likely rivals? Plus, this month's mini feature follows four riders and their changing fortunes at the Tour of Britain Women. We hand the microphone over to SD Worx super domestique Christine Majerus, DSM-firmenich road captain Pfeiffer Georgi, youngest rider in the race Eilidh Shaw and Lucy Harris, a full time meteorological data scientist competing at her first ever WWT race. And lastly we look ahead to the forthcoming women's Giro d'Italia which hasn't been won by anyone other than Anna van der Breggen or Annemiek Van Vleuten since 2016. The route boasting time trials, sprints, hilly stages and a fearsome finish on Blockhaus, and with Demi Vollering not starting, we look at who might be capable of winning the maglia rosa. We discuss emerging talents Neve Bradbury and Kim Cadzow and Lidl-Trek's joint leaders of Elisa Longo Borghini and Gaia Realini. In the end, the biggest obstacles to a Tadej Pogačar victory in the Giro d'Italia were a few over-excited fans giving him an unwelcome push on Monte Grappa. The Slovenian now says that he will chill, and then come back for the kill, only this time at the Tour de France... In the wake of Pogačar's six stage wins that carried him to the largest winning margin at the Giro for six decades, we reflect on the UAE Team Emirates leader's radical change of Grand Tour fortunes and look ahead to how his first GT win since 2021 has changed the racing landscape just five weeks before the Tour de France gets under way in Florence. We reveal Pogačar's plans for his Tour preparation, which include a week kicking back at home in Monaco, and assess whether he could pull off the greatest racing season in the sport's history. Our Giro coverage also features a lengthy final diary from Grand Tour debutant Harrison Wood. The Cofidis rider reveals the good and the bad of his race and wonders why UAE Team Emirates made things so difficult for everyone on the final "parade" stage into Rome. After Lorena Wiebes and her SD Worx time put on a Pogačar-like show of dominance to sweep the three stages and the overall crown at the Ride London Classique, race director Scott Sunderland tells us why the British event is going from strength to strength and about bigger plans for the future. We also have a lengthy interview with Human Powered Health's Audrey Cordon-Ragot. The highly experienced French racer reflects on the increasing flow of cash in the women's peloton, but argues that more of that money needs to find its way to the riders who aren't star names and are nearer the foot of the racing pyramid. Three-time Tour de France champion Greg LeMond provides this episode's "Way to Make Cycling Better", the American offering his suggestion for a league-like system that would make the sport easier for all comers to understand. In the May episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin, Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton look back over the recent Spanish stage racing from the comfort of their own cabaña. Questions may have hung over Demi Vollering's form after a consistent if lacklustre run in the Spring Classics, but the SD Worx rider answered in no uncertain manner with three dominant performances across the Vuelta Femenina, Itzulia Women and Vuelta a Burgos. Some unexpected rivals emerged though, most notably Evita Muzic who is priming herself to be France's great hope at this year's Tour de France Femmes. The team also discuss a huge comeback win for Lotta Henttala at the Vuelta a Burgos, her first victory in over five years after struggles with both her physical and mental health. This month's feature visits the topic of latecomers to the sport. These are riders who make the jump from regular jobs to elite racing careers in their late 20s and 30s. We hear from Jayco-Alula's Mavi Garcia, Movistar's Mareille Meijering and Coop-Repsol's Monica Greenwood about their journeys into cycling and the peculiar life lessons they've learned along the way. We're looking at the first ‘Grand Tour' of the season in this Arrivée episode from The Cycling Podcast Féminin. Rose Manley and Denny Gray of The British Continental pick out the big stories from a week of varied and exhilarating racing. SD Worx came to the race looking for redemption after being narrowly denied the Vuelta title in last year's controversial edition, but their leader Demi Vollering had a lot to prove after a disappointing Spring campaign. Her closest rivals - Kasia Niewiadoma and Elisa Longo Borghini - had both already taken landmark wins this year and were on confident form. There's also plenty to discuss away from the GC race, in a course that offered up high mountains, a team time trial, breakaway success and chaos causing crosswinds. With the Giro d'Italia starting in Turin on Saturday, we turn most of our new episode over to a preview of the corsa rosa and ask the question: can Geraint Thomas — or in fact anyone — outfox the flying Tadej Pogačar? We start with an extended interview with Geraint Thomas, beaten on the final weekend last year by Primož Roglič, who took the title by just 14 seconds. While acknowledging that Roglič's fellow Slovenian Pogačar is a class above his GC rivals for the maglia rosa, 2018 Tour de France winner Thomas tells us why he's backing himself to produce another sustained run for the Giro title and why he believes that he and his super strong Ineos Grenadiers team can be optimistic about their prospects. We also hear from another of Pogačar's likely rivals for the title, Ben O'Connor. The Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale rider is targeting his first ever Grand Tour podium, and his spring form suggests it's more than possible. The Australian says he's relishing the chance to show what he can do on Italy's roads and that he's hoping to be celebrating a podium finish in Rome in three weeks' time. During the Giro, we'll have diary contributions from young Brits Lewis Askey and Harrison Wood, who are both making their debut in the race. Groupama-FDJ's Askey tells us that his primary job will be to help set up Kiwi teammate Laurence Pithie in the bunch sprints and that he'll be kicking back in the evenings with a dose of Jeremy Clarkson. Cofidis's Wood, meanwhile, is hoping that his pre-race reading of Roy Keane's autobiography will inspire him to knock over some big names in the hills and mountains. We also look at what promises to be a scintillating contest among the Giro sprinters, where the depth of talent looks as strong or perhaps stronger than it's likely to be at the Tour de France in July. There's Milan and Merlier, Ewan and Groves, Kooij and Jakobsen, to name just half a dozen of the fastmen who'll be aiming to amass stage wins and the ciclamino points jersey. As the first women's Grand Tour of the season, the Vuelta Femenina, got under way in Spain earlier this week, our newshound Chris Marshall-Bell took the opportunity to get the latest on defending Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift champion Demi Vollering's end of season exit from SD Worx and rumoured arrival at FDj-Suez for a cool one million euros a season. FDJ boss Stephen Delcourt and SD Worx manager Danny Stam offer their take on the Vollering transfer, which is sure to be biggest ever seen on the women's side of the sport. In our regular 'How to Make Cycling Better' feature, Visma | Lease a Bike's Vuelta a España champion Sepp Kuss explains how course design could be improved to make racing more exciting. The spring Classics are over and the Grand Tours are looming, starting with the Vuelta Femenina, which kicks off this weekend. But before we get into the Vuelta Femenina and ask if Demi Vollering can win for the first time this season, there's another huge women's story in town: that of world champion Lotte Kopecky deciding to bypass the Tour de France Femmes in August — something which would have been unthinkable even a year ago — in favour of the Paris Olympic Games. We examine the reasons behind the world number one's decision to miss the biggest race of the season in order to target gold in three events at the Paris Olympic. We hear from her French rival Audrey Cordon-Ragot, who explains why she isn't surprised to hear the news about Kopecky's change of focus. This leads us on to a wider issue... With reigning Tour de France Femmes champion Demi Vollering reportedly set to move from SD Worx to FDJ Suez next season on a salary rumoured to be around one million euros, we ask whether this growth rate of women's cycling is sustainable? Is it going to create an even bigger divide between the rich and poor in the women's peloton? Next up is a preview of the week-long Vuelta Femenina, where Vollering will be chasing an elusive first win of the season. Movistar team director Tim Harris tells us what he's expecting from the season's first Grand Tour and also reveals his hopes for his own team, which will feature Movistar leader Liane Lippert for the first time this season after her recovery from a December leg break. Staying with the women's elite, we speak to Britain's Lizzie Deignan, another rider who's on the way back after breaking a bone, in her case an arm in a crash at the Tour of Flanders. The Lidl-Trek rider also has her focus on the Olympics, where she hopes to better the silver medal she won at London 2012. She outlines her programme leading into Paris, talks about her confidence in her ability to get into the form she needs, and about Britain's emerging strength as a road race power, which could benefit her this summer. In our 'How to Make Cycling Better' feature, we hand the microphone to French veteran stage racer and recent Liège-Bastogne-Liège runner-up Romain Bardet, who offers an intriguing proposal that he believes would help to reduce the control of the major teams on racing, making the sport more unpredictable and exciting. And, finally, was there ever a time when French financial services company Cofidis was not sponsoring a bike team? Once again, the team's contract has just been renewed, ensuring that there will be a Cofidis jersey in the peloton until at least 2028. So what's the secret of their staying power? We ask French journalist Pierre Carrey, the cycling correspondent Swiss paper Le Temps, about the French team and whether there's anything to those widespread rumours linking them with French star Julian Alaphilippe, whose contract is up at the end of this season. Our mini-feature this month focuses on the final riders to complete Paris-Roubaix. Riders who have had to overcome difficult circumstances to reach the end of one of the most formidable races in cycling, even when they finished way outside of the time limit. We speak to Ilaria Sanguineti, Eluned King and Senne Knaven about what motivated them to push past crashes, injuries and calamitous conditions to reach the famed velodrome and what it is like to ride the famous cobbles once the race is already long gone. We also have plenty of race analysis from the first few Classics of the season. Rose Manley is joined by Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton to pick apart what could be a changing of the guard at the top of the women's peloton. Elisa Balsamo outsprinted rider-of-the-moment Lotte Kopecky to take the spoils at Trofeo Binda after a huge effort from her team. With Lidl-Trek finally taking the top spot after improving results and rising confidence, we ask: what gave Lidl-Trek the winning edge and could it finally end SD Worx's winning dominance? We also discuss Ellen Van Dijk's victorious return from maternity leave, pick out rising stars Mareille Meijering and Puck Pieterse, and make a rare detour on to the track to reflect on Laura Kenny's golden career following her retirement. Yes, it's the most wonderful time of year… Christmas quiz time! Reigning champ (or so she claims) Orla Chennaoui pits herself against quiz debutant Denny Gray in Rose Manley's fiendish Yuletide puzzler. Let your brain be bamboozled by humdingers like, how many corners were there in the World Champs course? Did Demi Vollering really explain her teammate's toilet habits in a post-race interview? And most crucially, which rider is “Orange Bumcrease”? As is only appropriate at Christmas time, prepare for a whole load of sledging on all sides. Before all that, Rose, Orla and Denny reveal their racing highlights of the year and in a Cycling Podcast first, Denny closes the show with his performance of “12 Days of SD Worx-mas”. Ali and Mari are joined by Spencer Martin of the Beyond the Peloton newsletter to go through the recently unveiled route for the 2024 Tour de France Femmes, and break down the course, which features incredibly varied terrain through eight stages over seven days that will test every facet of the eventual winner's skillset. They also discuss if the new dates, which place the race in mid-August following the Olympics instead of directly after the Men's Tour de France in July, will help, or hurt, the effort to drive more viewers to the event.
