Elections wield significant influence over financial markets, creating a mix of volatility and opportunity for investors. From shifting policies to economic reforms, the effects ripple across sectors, altering interest rates, currency values, and overall investor sentiment. While short-term uncertainties can disrupt the market, long-term strategies like diversification and sector-specific investments remain reliable approaches to weather the storm. Schedule a free meeting This comprehensive guide explores how elections shape the stock market, sectors poised to benefit or struggle, and how Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) provides an ethical and profitable investment pathway. How Elections Influence the Stock Market The Impact of Political Uncertainty on Market Volatility Elections, particularly U.S. presidential races, are synonymous with market volatility. Investors speculate on potential shifts in fiscal and regulatory policies, leading to heightened activity in the months leading up to Election Day. Historical data shows this trend, with increased fluctuations as markets react to polling data, debates, and policy announcements. However, it's not merely about party politics—markets respond to anticipated economic impacts, such as tax reform or trade agreements. This heightened uncertainty can present risks but also opportunities for savvy investors. Sector Rotation Based on Policy Expectations Markets often "price in" anticipated outcomes based on campaign promises. For example: Pro-business agendas with tax cuts may favor industrial and financial sectors. Environmental reforms might bolster renewable energy industries but challenge fossil fuel companies. Regardless of predictions, results often defy expectations, requiring diversified strategies to mitigate sector-specific risks. The Bond Market's Reaction to Fiscal Policy Fiscal policies—like increased spending—often lead to higher deficits, sparking inflation concerns. Rising inflation typically drives up bond yields, affecting their prices. Inflation-protected securities, such as Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS), can hedge these risks. Case Study: Trump's Energy Sector Surprises Former President Trump's term highlights unpredictability. Despite policies favoring fossil fuels, the energy sector underperformed due to declining oil prices, a global renewable energy shift, and the pandemic's economic toll. This underscores the importance of resilience over speculation. Schedule a free meeting SRI Performance in Election Cycles SRI funds focus on ESG principles, often delivering competitive returns while aligning investments with ethical values. They favor sectors like renewable energy, technology, and, increasingly, nuclear energy.

In todays podcast we look at the idea of Environmental, social and corporate governance Scoring or ESG score. it grew out of a investment practice called Socially Responsible Investing (SRI). ESG investing and analysis, on the other hand, looks at finding value in companies—not just at supporting a set of values. Why is this important, the reason is that Aviva Investors, has put the directors of 1,500 companies on notice and that it is willing to seek their removal (from their investing group) if they fail to show enough urgency in tackling issues including the climate crisis and human rights! But how does a company show what its doing to Investors, by generating a Environmental, social and corporate governance score! Additionally with Investors wanting Green companies to invest in, they need to know how green a company is. At COP21, The Paris Agreement Capital Transition Assessment (PACTA)was created to be a free, open-source methodology and tool, which measures financial portfolios' alignment with various climate scenarios consistent with the Paris Agreement, which is developed into Environmental, social and corporate governance Score. If a company want to improve there Environmental, social and corporate governance Score they might want to introduce Science-based targets. these provide a clearly-defined pathway for companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping prevent impacts of climate change and future-proof business growth. Targets are considered ‘science-based' if they are in line with what the latest climate science deems necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – limiting global warming to well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

Ep 047: In today's day and age, we're having more and more conversations with our financial planning and advisory clients that they want their values to be incorporated in all aspects of their lives. There are hot button items that they want to be impacting wherever possible. Maybe its climate. Maybe its social inequality. Maybe its disclosure of a company's business practices or countless others. 2020 was a solid reminder of these issues to many of us as COVID impacted the world significantly and there were urgent calls to address racial injustice after the murder of George Floyd. According to the Report on US Sustainable and Impact Investing Trends 2020, which tracked data as of year-end 2019, found that investors are considering "ESG" factors across $17 trillion of professionally managed assets, a 42 percent increase since 2018. So what is "ESG" and how can someone tie their values to their investments? That's the premise of today's show! Today's guest is the Head of Fundamental Equity Client Portfolio Management team for Emerging Markets and International Equities in the Americas, and an Emerging Markets specialist at Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM). She leads the building of the Emerging Markets and International Equities franchise, drives business expansion, designs new portfolios, and communicates Fundamental Equity strategies to clients in the Americas. In her role as an Emerging Markets specialist, she is focused on helping clients gain appropriate access to emerging markets, as well as assisting with their strategic asset allocation decision making process. She has 13 years of industry experience, joining Goldman Sachs in 2008. She graduated from Lehigh University magna cum laude with a B.S. in Finance in 2008. She was awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2012. Today we examine Conscious Capitalism™ as an organization (the trademarked entity) and Conscious Capitalism the movement characterized by the investment concepts of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Socially Responsible Investing (SRI). This is the final building block as we continue on our collision course with Milton Friedman and the Chicago School of Economics. The promise of Conscious Capitalism as a concept, ESG and SRI is that capitalism on its own can and will voluntarily cure the societal ills it causes through the auspices of further deregulation and free markets. Intentionally living from your heart comes in many forms, shapes, and sizes. When it comes to your money, intentionally spending, saving and investing should also be from your heart. There is no shortage of climate markers suggesting that we are marching towards an uncertain environmental future. In the current efforts to halt and reverse our environmental degradation, there is virtually no questioning of whether we can have sustainability in a world of global capitalism and it is inconceivable that continuing with our traditional global investment scheme will get us through the rest of this century. Ongoing deterioration of the global climate has precipitated an urgency for new, innovative means to shift towards a more sustainable scheme of our global economic markets. Legal incorporation of principles of Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) into global investment mandates has been proposed as a means to fundamentally shift global investment mentality and operations towards greater environmental protection and sustainability. We set out to evaluate if SRI can be integrated into our global scheme and how the codification of these principles within corporate and investment law may help achieve their stated goals. We focused our investigation on an area where incorporation of SRI is already underway and has shown some success, namely sovereign wealth funds. And what better investment fund to lead this charge than the largest, most extensive, and most likely to form a model for legal transplantation to other industries - the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund. Join us as we explore efforts to address what is arguably the defining challenge of our time. We thank Dr. Beate Sjåfjell, professor of corporate law and sustainability at the University of Oslo and Dr. Benjamin Richardson, professor of environmental law and the financial sector at the University of Tasmania and Visiting Chair of our Global Law Programme for their enthusiastic participation in this episode. Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is gaining traction in the United States and around the world, as more investors seek to align their personal beliefs regarding environmental, social and moral issues with their investment preferences. New research and data on SRI has shown that it can make long-term financial and economic sense rather than just moral sense or social impact. Our guest for this episode is Dawn Wolfe, Director of Responsible Investing at BMO Global Asset Management. She discusses what socially responsible investing means, the different facets of SRI and considerations for advisors with social and environmentally conscious clients. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG); Socially Responsible Investing (SRI); and Impact Investing: these terms have slightly different meaning, but in the end all lead to the same conclusion. When we invest, we are owners of companies. We have an obligation to take that ownership responsibility seriously in order to influence the environmental and social impact of companies. For today’s episode of Social Entrepreneur, we continue our May #MoneyMonday series with Matthew Patsky of Trillium Asset Management. Trillium has been recognized as a “Best for the World” BCorp. We dig in to the governance aspect of ESG. Trillium not only screens investments into or out of their portfolio based on ESG, they use their shareholder status to improve the environmental, social and governance policies of companies they hold in their portfolio. Trillium Asset Management works with individual investors, financial advisors and institutional investors. For individuals, they combine investment performance with environmental and social impact. For financial advisors, Trillium enables them to meet the needs of their clients looking for sustainable investments. And Trillium partners with institutional investors to align their investment portfolio with their organizational values. Quotes from Matthew Patsky on Environmental, Social and Governance Investing “There are impacts with money and the way money is invested.” “On behalf of the clients, we are acting as owners and trying to influence behavior toward more sustainable business practices.” “We actually do see a positive long-term financial benefit to doing the right thing on governance.” “There seems to be an awful lot from the Ben & Jerry’s culture that is now running throughout all of Uniliver.” “The worst thing you can do is to sit back and say “I am but one individual. What I do doesn’t matter.’” Social Entrepreneurship Resources: Trillium Asset Management: http://www.trilliuminvest.com White Papers: http://www.trilliuminvest.com/news-resources/investing-white-papers Culture Shift Learning Academy waiting list: http://tonyloyd.com/assessment Culture Shift Learning Academy We’re moving closer to the launch of Culture Shift Learning Academy, a comprehensive system to help you flesh out your social impact idea and start achieving it. Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) is often dismissed as a competitive investment strategy based on poor perceptions around investment returns and efficacy. In reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The practise seeks to develop and uplift society by investing to not only better areas of environmental, social and corporate governance as well as protecting human rights but has the dual objective of competitive financial gain. SRI is very different from other development strategies which tend to be charitable (e.g corporate social investing) in nature rather than investing.
