Legal and Strategic Insights on Chinese Investment in the U.S. with Chris PereiraWelcome to another insightful episode of the Asia Business Podcast, this week we have Chris Pereira, CEO of iMpact, a strategic advisory firm dedicated to assisting Chinese companies in global expansion. In this episode, Art and Chris engage in a candid discussion about the intricate challenges and opportunities Chinese companies face when entering the US market. The Current Landscape of US-China RelationsWith ongoing tensions between the US and China, businesses are navigating a complicated environment filled with tariffs, political tweets, and fluctuating regulations. The conversation opens with Chris highlighting that while tariffs remain a prominent topic, Chinese companies are more concerned with the stability of US regulations and policies, especially under an unpredictable political climate.Legal Concerns for Chinese BusinessesChris shares how his clients often question the potential risks associated with significant investments in the US. Art weighs in on the legal perspective, clarifying that while tweets may generate headlines, they have no legal standing. He reassures that even amidst political rhetoric, the US legal system maintains checks and balances that protect businesses from arbitrary decisions.Importance of Localizing Business EffortsThe discussion turns to the critical need for Chinese companies to localize efforts when establishing a presence in the US. Art and Chris emphasize the grassroots approach required to build local community relationships, often overlooked by companies accustomed to China's top-down decision-making processes. Understanding local governance and community impact is essential for success. The Political and Economic Impacts of TariffsTariffs, while significant, have not deterred Chinese companies from pursuing opportunities in the US market. Chris explains that many businesses manage to adapt their strategies, focusing on enhancing brand positioning as opposed to competing solely on price. Art adds that while tariffs can create uncertainties, they also encourage innovation and resilience among Chinese firms. The COVID-19 Aftermath and Geopolitical ConcernsChris expresses surprise at the continued discussions around COVID-19 within Chinese media, particularly in the context of legal actions against China. Art offers a legal interpretation, suggesting that lawsuits targeting governmental entities rather than private companies carry more symbolic meaning than enforceable outcomes.Future Outlook on US-China Business DynamicsDespite current challenges, both Art and Chris acknowledge an underlying optimism among Chinese businesses. The focus on strategic localization, investment in automation, and diversification into alternate markets like Southeast Asia and Europe signify adaptability and resilience. Art predicts a continued shift towards manufacturing localization in the US, driven by automation and stable regulatory environments.Final Insights and Moving ForwardAs the episode concludes, Art and Chris reflect on the shifting landscape of global business and the importance of adaptability and strategic foresight. The complexities of US-China relations underscore the need for businesses to remain informed and agile, leveraging diplomacy and legal expertise to navigate these uncertain waters.Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome00:36 Challenges and Opportunities for Chinese Companies in the US02:01 Legal Concerns and Tariffs06:34 Localizing Business Operations09:19 COVID-19 Lawsuits and Geopolitical Issues16:02 Tariff Situation and Future Outlook18:31 Brand Focus Over Price Competition19:06 Impact of Tariffs on Consumers and Suppliers20:44 China's Resilience and Market Shifts23:06 US Manufacturing and Investment Trends28:24 Automation and Complex Supply Chains31:17 Biotech and Pharma Industry Dynamics34:50 Concluding Thoughts and Future Outlook ProducerJacob ThomasFollow UsLinkedInApple Podcasts

The momentum behind diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) came to an abrupt halt at the start of the year. DE&I initiatives once championed as a force for workplace equity and growth are now being condemned, sidelined, and stripped of their visibility—at least until political winds shift again. But at what cost?We invited Margaret Spence, an expert and advocate for transformative and inclusive change, to discuss the cost of these reduced investments and what organizations can do to respond. Margaret motivates leaders to not focus on the term “DE&I,” but on what inclusion truly means for a culture, a workplace, and our collective future. Companies must shift from performative actions to unshakable and deeply embedded commitments that are designed to withstand political and economic turbulence.Margaret reminds us that the next generation deserves better than what we are willing to give it today. It is up to all of us—companies, employees, and communities—to ensure that the workplaces of tomorrow do not regress but instead rise to meet the promise of true inclusion. The question is not whether DE&I will survive, but whether we are willing to fight for the future it represents.Listen for key insights on:Shifting language away from traditional DEI termsHow individuals—and not just corporations—can advance inclusionThe threat of AI to workplace equity Resources + Links:Margaret Spence's LinkedInMargaret Spence on Episode 165 of Purpose 360Margaret Spence's WebsiteNew York Times: These Words Are Disappearing in the New Trump Administration (00:00) - Welcome to Purpose 360 (00:13) - Margaret Spence on DEI (02:40) - Margaret's Background (04:31) - Her Purpose (05:55) - Passion, Purpose, and Value (07:30) - Challenges in Diversity (10:48) - Fad with Shallow Roots (12:13) - Current Landscape (14:18) - Major Impacts (15:24) - 25% (17:22) - NYT Report (19:34) - What Language to Use (23:22) - What You Can Do (24:53) - Those Standing Up (26:42) - Dismantling Contracts (27:16) - Last Thoughts (30:46) - Wrap Up

The process of liver transplantation involves many complexities, and each patient's path to transplant is unique. To offer insider perspectives on this process, Dr. Zachary Berman sits down with transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon Dr. John Seal, as well as transplant hepatologists Dr. Heather Patton and Dr. Steve Young. Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants can follow this link to earn CME / CE credits for completing an accredited learning activity related to this discussion: https://www.cmeuniversity.com/course/take/125740 --- This podcast is supported by an educational grant from AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals and Boston Scientific. --- SYNPOSIS The panel begins by discussing the multidisciplinary pre-transplant evaluation process, which assesses factors such as liver function, comorbidities, surgical risk, and the availability of psychosocial support. Once a patient is listed for transplant, they enter a system that prioritizes those with the highest Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score. During the waiting period, several comorbidities should be carefully monitored. Dr. Seal explores the impact of portal vein hypertension and portal vein thrombosis, explaining how these conditions may necessitate intraoperative thrombectomy or bypass. Dr. Patton and Dr. Young focus on considerations for using anticoagulation in patients with a high baseline bleeding risk and selecting the appropriate anticoagulant for patients listed for transplant. For patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), eligibility for MELD exception points may depend on factors such as time spent on the waiting list, adherence to the Milan criteria, and the presence of extrahepatic complications of liver disease. The panel also discusses bridging therapies to transplant, including Y90 and TACE. In the peri-transplant phase, they highlight innovations such as living donor transplants, liver perfusion pumps, and the use of hepatitis C- and HIV-positive organs. Finally, the discussion turns to post-transplant considerations, including surgical complications, organ rejection, immunosuppression, predictors of HCC recurrence, and long-term surveillance. --- TIMESTAMPS 00:00 - Introduction 01:16 - Current Landscape of Liver Transplantation 03:22 - Transplant Evaluation Process 09:48 - Timeline from Listing to Transplantion 11:16 - Treating Portal Vein Thrombosis and Hypertension 18:44 - MELD Exception Points 22:05 - Bridging Therapies 25:34 - Peri-Transplant Considerations 30:53 - Post-Transplant Period 37:39 - Repeat Transplantation --- RESOURCES Model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) and allocation of donor livers (Wiesner et al, 2003): https://www.gastrojournal.org/article/S0016-5085%2803%2950022-1/fulltext Liver transplantation for the treatment of small hepatocellular carcinomas in patients with cirrhosis- Milan Criteria (Mazzaferro et al, 1996): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8594428/ Validation of the prognostic power of the RETREAT score for hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence using the UNOS database (Mehta et al, 2019): https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6445634/ CME Accreditation Information: https://f7cae4ec-b69e-490d-9e0f-19b16a6f146d.usrfiles.com/ugd/f7cae4_a7c37ea3cd1b4d3fa53d5edf8dfe255b.pdf

Join us to hear from key experts representing brands, traders, farmers, NGOs and on-the-ground communities. With the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) deadline now likely to be extended by 12 months, businesses will gain extra time to prepare — but does this delay offer an advantage or merely prolong the uncertainty? Who really benefits from the extra time, and which organisations will suffer losses for trying to get ahead? Will this extension ease the burden, or does it simply push the challenge further down the road? For the first in the series, this webinar explored the implications of the amended timeline, which now sets the application date for December 30, 2025, for large operators, and June 30, 2026, for micro- and small enterprises. There's an athlete right now that uses, knows and loves your product. So why aren't you partnering with them to promote your brand? The global sports sponsorship market is expected to grow to almost $108 billion by 2030.And there's around $1.3B in projected revenue this year from pro women athlete sponsorships. Feel like you're missing out yet? The message is clear: sponsor a pro woman athlete (or two). In this episode, we're talking about B2B marketing lessons from professional women athlete sponsorships with the help of our special guest, PARITY CEO Leela Srinivasan.Together, we talk about experimenting with new channels, finding your match, and much more.About our guest, Leela SrinivasanLeela Srinivasan took the reins as CEO in May 2023, when Parity had amassed a network of over 800 women athletes and paid out over $2 million in sponsorships. Under her leadership, the company is poised to increase both numbers exponentially – and become a household name – as it enters its next phase in the fight against gender pay disparity in sports.Prior to joining Parity, Leela served as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for three-high-growth companies: digital payments provider Checkout.com; Momentive, the maker of SurveyMonkey; and recruiting software company Lever. She developed her initial passion for community, customer centricity and data-driven marketing earlier in her marketing career at LinkedIn and OpenTable. She serves on the board of Upwork and on the board of advisors for the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, where she earned her MBA.Leela lives in North Carolina with her husband Joel and three middle-school girls. There are no dull moments. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Pro Women Athlete Sponsorships:Experiment with new channels. Keep a budget to try new things. Whether it's simply posting to a different social channel or sponsoring a pro athlete, the Leela says, ”As a marketer, your livelihood depends on being able to find new channels to replace channels that were once working really well that suddenly stopped working, to find ways to stand out from your competitors. Because what happens is if you're doing one thing, then six months later, everyone else is probably trying to do it too. So you have to keep things fresh. It doesn't mean you have to devote your entire budget to experimentation, of course. You need to certainly put money where you know things are working, but over time that mix is going to change as a marketer. And so I think it's smart. It's actually self preservation in some ways, to keep trying to just find ways to experiment on the edges and tap into something that can really give you a fresh perspective in the market.”Find your match. There's an athlete out there right now who would align strongly with your brand values. Use them as the face of your brand to humanize the name. Leela says, “Find something that really feels right for the brand and allows them to kind of carve out their own space. There are so many directions that you can now run in; New leagues springing up, new sports coming to the fore, new athletes with incredibly interesting stories.Quotes*”When you get those people, those athletes, those influencers talking very naturally about something that they find joy in or that they believe in, it's just another level of awesomeness when it comes to ambassadorship or testimonial.”*”There are so many stories waiting to be told. If you're willing to be creative about the types of athlete that you work with, there are always athletes that can be within budget that can do some incredible storytelling for you.”*”I always had some money in what I called my rainy day fund or my slush fund. That budget was mine to make discretionary investments where I wanted to try things, where maybe the ROI was less proven or the path was a little less trodden but it was worth the opportunity, worth that risk to try something different because, God forbid you just become this terrible vanilla marketer that is doing the same as everybody else. You have to find ways to break through. I mean, that's the fun part of marketing. Why wouldn't you? So I always had some experimentation budget just tucked away for when these types of opportunities came up.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Leela Srinivasan, CEO at PARITY[2:03] Leela's Journey to PARITY[5:17] Understanding Pro Women Athlete Sponsorships[9:55] History of Pro Women Athlete Sponsorships[14:27] Current Landscape and Opportunities[24:07] The Gender Disparity in Sports[24:51] The Influence of Women Athletes on Marketing[27:00] Creative Campaigns and Athlete Partnerships[28:16] The Importance of Originality in Marketing[29:56] Investing in Women's Sports[32:38] Engaging with Brands and Athletes[35:37] The Power of Authentic Athlete EndorsementsLinksConnect with Leela on LinkedInLearn more about PARITYAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. This episode is a repost from The Working On Purpose PodcastCapitalism comes in for criticism, despite the fact that this economic system has resulted in substantially increasing global per capita income over the centuries, spurring economic growth and progress. Critics often criticize a kind of Aberrant Capitalism, one that is dominated in their minds by corporations, whose behavior is not always meritorious. But from the earliest times, it was Customer Capitalism, not corporate capitalism, that was the driver of individual prosperity and thriving. Companies such as Wedgwood & Bentley of Wedgwood China fame (founded 1759) set the original precedents by prioritizing customer needs and innovation, laying the foundation for contemporary business practices. The advent of these corporations facilitated large-scale entrepreneurship, promoting innovation and efficient responses to customer demands.Entropy has set into the capitalist system since the founding days, and there is some corporate behavior that needs reform. Dr. Alise Cortez is attentive to these concerns. Sometimes practical lion types and other perceiving free-spirited, creative or neurodivergent types prefer non-traditional paths. Episode 2 talks about the four people patterns and my last two episodes have been about type 7's who tend to have multiple interests and may have ADHD or similar tendencies. A job is just one type of income stream out of 8 that you and your soon to be adult child can consider. Not only that but the job landscape is changing at a rapid speed. There will be jobs available when they graduate from college that don't exist when they graduate from High School. Find out the two main ways young adults approach this major life transition and how you can help them. If you are wondering how to find the right educational path for your child, tune into this episode where I interview Emma B. Perez career coach, author of What's the Point of School and creator of LifeQuest which is a gamified program to take your child from undecided to excited.
