As we are now in the midst of March Madness, let's revisit one of the more unsung basketball dramas of recent years which happens to feature VERY little actual basketball.  Andre Holland stars as Ray Burke, a hot-shot NBA agent representing an aspiring rookie (Melvin Gregg) who is struggling to figure out what to do with himself as the beginning of his first season is delayed as as a result of a protracted lockout forced by the league's owners.  Ray plots to figure out ways to both end the lockout AND a possible new way for the players to compete on the court SEPARATE from the League....and that's where the plot starts to thicken resulting in a sports drama which ends up focusing more on what happens OFF the court.  "LFTC" stalwart Steven Soderbergh helmed, edited, and shot this entire film on his IPhone - this is now our FIFTH episode featuring one of his movies, a podcast record! :) Also co-starring are Zazie Beetz, Sonja Sohn, Kyle MacLachlan, and the irreplaceable Bill Duke. Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

From director Sonja Sohn (Baltimore Rising) star of HBO's The Wire, comes THE SLOW HUSTLE, an American tale of how the culture of law enforcement corruption penetrates the system at every level, destroying lives, as ordinary citizens, hardworking local journalists, and a few rebellious public servants endeavor to pick up the pieces. When Baltimore police detective Sean Suiter is shot and killed on duty the day before he is scheduled to testify before a federal grand jury, a mystery unravels that raises questions about what story he was going to tell about his fellow officers. The infamously corrupt Gun Trace Task Force is the focus of an investigation that exposes members of an elite task force as a criminal gang and that proves to be one of the dirtiest police units in US history. THE SLOW HUSTLE follows Detective Suiter's widow and children as they work to uncover clues and hold the Baltimore Police Department and City Hall accountable. Meanwhile dogged journalists strive to crack the case, including D. Watkins, author of We Speak for Ourselves: How Woke Culture Prohibits Progress, and Justin Fenton, author of We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops, and Corruption. At the vortex lies Detective Sean Suiter, with the conflicting theories of his death and the complexities of his life, creating a dizzying portrait of the human challenges of modern policing in the age of rising violent crime and police. Director Sonja Sohn joins us to talk about how the death of Detective Sean Suiter's unsolved death has affected the lives of the Suiter family and the corrosive impact that the scandal has had on the Baltimore Police Department, and the standing of Baltimore's political establishment. The full complement of the shuttle pod crew (Brian, Jared, Kayla, and Matt) made it this week to discuss “Perpetual Infinity.” The episode was well acted, with major kudos going to guest star Sonja Sohn as Dr. Gabrielle Burnham. We have questions about just how the Red Angel suit works, and why it’s tethered to a point 950 years in the future. The newly AI rebuilt Leland also raises a number of questions about the end goal for Control, and of course we discuss the (Borg) elephant in the room about the way that Control seems to be taking on a physical host.

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 11: Perpetual Infinity For episode 36 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 11 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Perpetual Infinity. This episode was written by Alan McElroy & Brandon Schultz, and it was directed by Maja Vrvilo. She directed the first Short Trek. Discussion on Perpetual Infinity begins at 8:37… We begin the podcast with feedback from the previous episode. We get into this episode 8 minutes 37 seconds into the podcast. Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We thought last week’s experiment was a big hit, so we’re going to do it again, and let Fred’s pics do the talking for us! Before you look at pics from Perpetual Infinity… We both loved this episode, although maybe not quite as much as last week’s episode. We’ll be back next week with our next episode. As always, your feedback is essential to this podcast! We’ll be having a short feedback deadline most weeks this season, due to scheduling issues. We’ll cover more feedback from S2E11 Perpetual Infinity, so do not hesitate to send in your feedback if you miss the deadline. For Star Trek: Discovery S2E12, the deadline to get in your feedback is Friday, April 5, 2019, at 6 PM Eastern/5 PM Central or 11 PM UTC. You can submit feedback via the feedback page, Facebook Group, Twitter, you can email startrekgsm at gmail dot com, or call the GSM voicemail at (216) 236-5449 and leave us a message there. Make sure to mention you’re calling The Star Trek Discovery Podcast when you call. I’m also podcasting on The Walking Dead. Because of this schedule, we are trying to get our episodes down to a more reasonable podcast length. To help with this, we’d like you to focus on a few key points from the episode, rather than discussing everything about the episode. If submitting a voicemail, please try to keep your calls to 4 minutes or less, with an absolute maximum of 5 minutes. We would like to keep our episodes under 2 hours! Please help with that! Links to us… Want to participate? Join our Facebook group! And follow us on Twitter! And don’t forget to subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts! While you do, we’d appreciate it if you can leave us a review, hopefully, a 5-star! Or, if not, a rating will do!!! And we’re now on Spotify! And now, here’s a visual look at Perpetual Infinity!

Sonequa Martin-Green puts on an acting clinic in the latest Star Trek Discovery episode "Perpetual Infinity," all while Michael Burnham is working through some serious mom issues.  Alan Van Sprang's Leland kinda recovers from getting stabbed in the eyes last week, and gets to paying the stabbing thing forward to Ash Tyler.  Sonja Sohn gets a lot of screen time in this episode as Michael Burnham's mother, and hot damn is she stupendous. Competing for that maternal role is Michelle Yeoh as Mirror Georgiou.

"The Wire" is often seen as a show showing the gritty side of police work. But in light of questions raised by the Black Lives Matter movement, does the shows depictions of police corruption and gender politics go deep enough? This episode goes deep on the real corruption in the BPD and the depth of gender violence of policing, focusing on the story of Korryn Gaines, a Black woman and self-proclaimed "sovereign citizen" killed by Baltimore County police in 2016. We close with an interview with Sonja Sohn, the actress who played Detective Kima Greggs in The Wire, to unpack the shows complicated legacy. Support the show (http://www.newtimbuktu.com)

Our guest today is Heather Mizeur, the former Democratic primary gubernatorial candidate who has a new project called Soul Force Politics. The project lives online at MizMaryland.org, includes a weekly podcast, policy blogs, and will eventually host women-empowerment workshops. In her podcast conversations with guests like Melissa Etheridge, Gov. Larry Hogan, or film maker and actor Sonja Sohn, she makes the case that spirituality should not be divorced from our political discourse. And her new project explores the merging of what she calls inner wisdom and external actions, and how that union can animate political movements.

Actress Sonja Sohn discusses her directorial debut, a new HBO documentary film that takes us on a deep journey to review the hidden stories behind the civic unrest that unfolded in Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody in 2015. “Baltimore Rising” chronicles the City’s unrest leading up to this tragedy and takes viewers deep behind the scenes of a community on edge long before an incident that grabbed national attention. What is so powerful about the film is that it lets Baltimore tell its story in its own voice. Soul Force Politics was given an advance screening of the film – a story that weaves together the voices of Baltimore’s community leaders, activists, and every day citizens who are working tirelessly to heal and improve relationships with the City’s police and between and among each other. In this hour, we will give you unparalleled access to the film’s director and the story behind the story. #BaltimoreRisingDoc Podcast Episodes | Soul Force Politics
