Climate Change is a tough topic to cover not just on this podcast, but in any article or documentary. The number of Ocean aspects that are impacted by Climate Change is impossible to cover in one podcast. However, each aspect of Climate Change needs to be discussed and today I am going to be discussing how Climate Change is affecting biodiversity at the Equator.  It's important to note that many habitats and Ocean Species rely on a narrow set of variables such as Temperature, pH, Salinity, Depth, etc. Climate Change is raising temperatures all over the world and now species at the equator are moving towards the North and South poles to seek cooler waters.  A recent study showed how similar events in the past (millions of years ago) led to the last mass extinction, but not all events.  Find out more by listening to this episode. A phosphate mine leaked and released an estimated 237 million gallons of wastewater with exceeded levels of phosphorus, nitrate, and ammonia. These levels in addition to the amount of wastewater released could have massive negative effects on marine life (including manatees, fish, and seagrass beds) in the immediate and surrounding areas. The history of this area shows that the marine habitats may not be able to take many more damaging events such as this one. Seaspiracy completely dismissed dolphin-safe labels on tuna as corrupt and a failure; however, they did not look at the differences between the labels and the regulations in various countries.  The US has regulations for companies that say their tuna is dolphin-safe and it stems from their Marine Mammal Protection Act and an Amendment that goes back to 1990. The program decreased the mortality of dolphins from 130,000, in 1987, to less than 1,000 in 2018 (mortality has been less than 1,000/year since 2011).  These numbers are only in the US and it does not include the problems internationally, but it is progress and has saved hundreds of thousands of dolphins. Over 20 years ago, a global project called the Census of Marine Life observed a number of marine species migrating long distances across Oceans. It was new data that technology allowed us to see through satellite tags, a new tool at the time.  Satellite tags have advanced in technology over the past 20 years and that has allowed scientists to understand a little bit more about how marine species move through the Oceans. New research has revealed that marine species such as sharks, tuna, marine mammals, penguins, and sea turtles swim in circles inside and outside of feeding areas. The research has led scientists to hypothesize that the animals may be searching for navigation information from geomagnetic fields.   More research is needed to understand the micromovements of marine species. Imagine the challenges of building a business to 2021. I have a business, Speak Up For Blue (http://www/speakupforblue.com) and it is difficult. Now add on the fact that people are building sustainable businesses. Now add on the fact that some people have launched their business in the COVID-19 Pandemic. the challenges are immense and it takes a hard-working person to build a new sustainable business during a global pandemic.  I interview one of those people and her name is Marina Tran-Vu. She launched a company called Equo (link below) that sells sustainable products such as coconut, grass, rice, and bamboo straws as well as bamboo cutlery. She started the business because she was inspired in a coffee shop in Vietnam when the waiter handed her a grass straw.  Now she works with local farmers, who have been making these straws for centuries, to create the products and ship them worldwide. Marina tries to make the business as sustainable and transparent as possible. The latter is easier to do than the former as she tells me in the interview.  Check out the products: http://www.equointl.com/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/equointl/ TW: https://twitter.com/equointl FB: https://www.facebook.com/equointl LI: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/equo-international/ Buy from EQUO: Amazon US: https://www.amazon.com/stores/EQUO+International/page/0FC918E1-F244-4FEF-A378-DC7EA8969A6C Amazon Canada: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B08KXX2BD6 Amazon Australia: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08KXX2BD6 Want To Talk Oceans? We need to manage the human population in order to protect the Ocean. I remember Dr. Edd Hind-Ozan saying that statement in a conversation we had while planning for the International Marine Conservation Congress in Malaysia (2018). It always stuck with me because it was so true. Humans pose the biggest disturbances that contribute to our major issues in the Ocean (Climate Change, Plastic Pollution, Overfishing, and Marine Pollution). I want to add to the statement that we have to change the way humans behave around the Ocean. Conservation messaging will be important to accomplish behaviour change. Behaviour change is an important field in Marine Conservation as it explains how to get the attention of a specific target market to change their behaviour for a conservation outcome. Messaging plays a large role in getting people's attention, holding it to educate them, and inspire them to follow the call to action. For example, Plastic pollution is causing the death of marine mammals, we should stop using single-use plastic. It's a basic message that won't change people's behaviour, but there are ways to make the message more appealing. some people fail hard at that message.  I talk about two recent incidences that provide great examples of how not to create conservation messages. The Marine Mammal Center is an organization that specializes in rescuing Marine Mammals along a 600 mile stretch of California Coastline. It's not an easy thing to do; however, the organization has saved thousands of animals over a 45-year period. I was able to be connected to Adam Ratner (bio below) to discuss how the Marine Mammal Center goes beyond rescuing Marine Mammals through its various programs and storytelling. Listen to a few different stories of how the Marine Mammal Center has helped Marine Mammals and inspired people to live for a better Ocean! Background on Adam Adam Ratner began at The Marine Mammal Center in 2009 leading educational programs for high school students and visitors. Over the years, he has challenged people to think differently about ocean conservation using the stories of individual patients that are rescued by The Marine Mammal Center. By providing hopeful stories of action and tangible solutions, Adam helps people find inspiration and empowerment to become the heroes of their own environment and community. Today, as the Associate Director of Conservation Education, Adam serves as an expert on topics related to ocean health, such as climate change, ocean trash and sustainable seafood. His ability to break down big and complex ideas helps people understand how their actions have an impact on the ocean. Adam was named one of the 30 under 30 Game Changers for the Planet by the North American Association for Environmental Education. Working collaboratively across sectors and geographic regions, he serves as the chair of the Training Committee of the National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation and is currently the Executive Chair of the Bay Area Climate Literacy Impact Collaborative. He is also a member of the Zero Waste Marin Local Task Force, the Global Ghost Gear Initiative and the Pacific Ocean Aquafarms Stakeholder Advisor Group. Adam has been in the conservation field for over 10 years leading environmental education programming. He graduated from Bates College with degrees in Marine Biology and Psychology, with a focus on animal behavior. He has completed field research and studied animal behavior in labs around the country. His research includes studying bird hearing, as well as fish learning and memory. About The Marine Mammal Center Headquartered on the site of a former Cold War missile base, The Marine Mammal Center is a global leader in marine mammal health, science and conservation, and is the largest marine mammal hospital in the world. The Center’s teaching hospital and training programs operate globally, with its headquarters in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, part of the National Park Service. Expert teams from the Center travel around the world to work with emerging first responders and has itself rescued more than 24,000 marine mammals from 600 miles of its authorized rescue area of California coastline and the Big Island of Hawai‘i. The Ocean Conveyor Belt is an Ocean circulation system in the Atlantic Ocean that starts with the Gulf Stream coming out of the Gulf of Mexico moving up the East coast of North America and crossing the Atlantic to the UK. The system regulates the Climate along the East coast of North America and Northern Europe.  When the Conveyor Belt is moving at a regular speed it results in the climate that we are used to seeing in these areas; however, if the belt slows down, the climate will result in higher sea levels along the East coast of North America and cooler temperatures in Northern Europe with more droughts in the rest of Europe. Researchers have measured a regression in speed in the Conveyor Belt over the last 1,000 years and it is caused by Climate Change. We need to reduce Climate Change before we can't do anything to stop the Conveyor Belt from slowing down.  Links To Article:  https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/feb/25/atlantic-ocean-circulation-at-weakest-in-a-millennium-say-scientists https://blogs.ei.columbia.edu/2019/03/20/amoc-ocean-conveyor-belt-climate-change/ Want To Talk Oceans? The deep freeze in Texas is not only affecting Texans all over the state, but it's always affecting Sea Turtles. Animal rescuers made up of government scientists, organizations, and volunteers rescued 4,750 Green Sea Turtles that were affected by the deep freezing effects of the cold snap. The cold temperatures affect Sea Turtles as they can render them immobile. The Sea Turtles can't swim to the surface to get air and could eventually drown.  The efforts from everyone that participated in the rescue potential saved the population of Threatened Sea Turtles.  You can support those organizations at the links below: Sea Turtle Inc.: https://seaturtleinc.org/ Sea Turtle Island Restoration Network: https://seaturtles.org/ Link To Article: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-weather/article/Texans-stepping-up-to-rescue-a-record-breaking-15960798.php Want To Talk Oceans? Lionfish are an interesting species to look at and have a great ecological function in the South Pacific ecosystem, but the species is wreaking havoc in Atlantic coral reef habitats. There are a number of business efforts that are trying to develop a wider market net.  Lionfish were introduced to the Atlantic Ocean through the marine aquarium hobby trade and have been increasing in abundance ever since. There are a number of efforts to capture the invasive Lionfish through fishing derbies, serving lionfish at local restaurants, and using lionfish parts in jewelry.  Now a new business is trying to support those communities and scale the effect by bringing the seafood and jewelry market to a wider audience.  Link To Article: https://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/inno/stories/profiles/2021/02/11/olacoral-turns-invasive-ocean-species-into-sustain.html Want To Talk Oceans? Coastal Habitats play a very important role in the health of the Ocean and the security of the coastline. Seagrass meadows are one of the critical habitats that are often forgotten because they may not have the "sexiness" that other habitats such as coral reefs have; however, they provide a nursery habitat for thousands of species, filter out nutrients and heavy metals from the water, and act as a carbon sink. There is one more benefit that certain Seagrass species provide the Ocean and that is filtering out large amounts of microplastics. The Seagrass species, Posidonia oceanica, produce fibrous material known as Neptune balls that trap 1,500 plastic particles per kilogram of seagrass each year. The Neptune balls often wash ashore where they can be picked up and discarded.  Researchers don't know the effects of plastics on the seagrass species as trapping plastic is a fairly new discovery and more research will be required. P. oceanica is not the only seagrass species to have this ability to trap plastic pieces, Enhalus acodoides, is a species found off the coast of China's Hainan province and has been observed to trap plastics too, just a lesser amount.  The discovery adds to the benefit of keeping Seagrass meadows around; however, the Mediterranean species are slowly disappearing from the area due to a number of threats such as Climate Change, invasive species, pollution, boating anchors, and coastal development.  Link to Article: https://news.mongabay.com/2021/02/this-mediterranean-seagrass-filters-plastic-waste-but-its-also-under-threat/ Want To Talk Oceans? You might have seen a visualization that is circulating around the internet of a Blue Whale feeding within Northern Patagonia, Chile in a sea of ship traffic. The Blue Whale is rebounding over and over again as it confronts ships throughout the 7-day period of the visualization.  The visualization is a snapshot from March, 2019 of what blue whales face every year as they visit the area to feed and care for their calves. The massive whales can encounter more than 700 ships, where most of the ships are from the aquaculture industry bringing staff and supplies to their posts and back.  The visualization paints a dark picture of what Blue Whales encounter but provides evidence for conservation action within the area during the Blue Whale season. Conservation action in the form of shipping lanes and seasonal closures would be a start to protect Blue Whales and their young.  Link to article: https://www.livescience.com/whale-stress-animation.html Want To Talk Oceans? A new Administration, the dominance of one political party in the House, the Senate, and the White House brings along new changes. One of those changes in Climate Policy. The Biden/Harris administration promised changes to Climate policy that would reverse many of the policies from the previous administration, including the rejoining of the US to the Paris Climate Agreement.  I invited Jasmine Sanders, Executive Director of Our Climate, on the podcast to discuss what the new administration will mean to the Climate movement. She summed it up by saying: "Climate Work begins NOW!" Not that Our Climate wasn't doing climate work before. It's just that now there is a possibility to inform policy on Climate on the federal level that wasn't possible over the past four years. Jasmine tells me about the work that is being done through her organization to mentor young people of all cultures and socio-economic backgrounds to help get involved with the Climate movement for their communities. If you have been to any beach in the Atlantic Ocean and/or Caribbean Sea, then you have probably witnessed a beach that has piles and piles of sargassum messing it up and causing a stink.  I remember this happening on my last visit to Mexico. My family and I went on vacation and we were looking forward to relaxing on the beach and swimming in the Ocean. When we got there; however, the beach was populated by piles (up to the middle of my shin!) of sargassum and trucks that were carrying it away. The trucks were there all day. Needless to say that the beach was not as peaceful as we expected.  It would be great if we could find a way to reuse the sargassum in a way that is sustainable instead of disposing of it in a landfill, right? Well, researchers at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences are conducting a pilot study to answer that question. The big question at hand is whether the sargassum contains elevated levels of Arsenic as they did in studies from Mexico and Texas. Tests are currently being analyzed to determine if sargassum along Florida beaches have similarly elevated levels of Arsenic.   If the levels are below the limits of Arsenic, then the pilot project can begin and we can see if sargassum can be reused as compost and mixed within topsoil for agricultural purposes.  Link to Article: https://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/news/2021/01/13/can-sargassum-seaweeds-brown-pungent-properties-serve-as-a-green-solution-to-topsoil/ Want To Talk Oceans? Their goal is to get it protected and excluded from non-Indigenous people. The study shows that collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous scientists can work well together whereby both communities benefit. You should start to see legislation written and passed by the House and Senate to curb electricity generated Greenhouse gas emissions from coal plants and the transportation industry, The legislation will take a while as everything in government takes longer than anyone thinks, but we should start to see some progress within the next four years of the Biden administration.  Do you think rejoining the Paris Climate Accord will change anything in the US? I am joined by Dr. Steve Box from Rare who tells me about how their Fish Forever Program works with local communities (ex. Fisheries communities) around the tropics to work with them to change their behaviours through action and make their livelihoods more sustainable.  They take cumulative actions through individual change.  Rare uses a proven strategy to help conserve coastal habitats within the 12 NM zone, where most of the human pressure takes place, to enable local communities to live a more sustainable livelihood.  Conservation of the Ocean can be done through individual behaviour change. It doesn't stop at fisheries communities in the tropics. It continues with you and me and the choices we make every day that affect the Ocean. The purchases we make and the way we use resources can change so that we can live for a better Ocean. Website Links: https://rare.org/ http://portal.rare.org/en/ Want To Talk Oceans? The documentation of the distribution of any ocean species is critical to knowing the health of the species global and regional populations. That is why the sighting of 3 beaked whales in the South China Sea by beaked whale experts was so important. It opened the possibility that the whales inhabit the Western Pacific Ocean.  The individuals were either ginkgo-toothed beaked whales or Deraniyagala's beaked whales as the two are very similar. Unfortunately, the sighting could not be confirmed as no DNA sample was taken.  There was an interesting observation however, there were two indentations observed on the beaks of the whales that is similar to other beaked whales that have had interaction with fishing gear. This observation fuels the thirst for more information about the animals and their distribution. A former fisher launched a local radio station in Pambna Island, India to keep the fishing community informed of marine issues, women's roles in fisheries, and remembering major fishing events.  The radio station is effective because the messages are targeted to the local community, made up of mostly fishers, by a local community member. The fishers will listen to the radio for 10-12 hours while at-sea to such topics that drive communications on specific topics such as over-fishing, climate change, and plastic pollution.  One fisher told reporters that he now cuts sea turtles out of his trawl ner instead of selling them for food because he understands that sea turtles help eat invasive jellyfish.   The radio station is another example of why it is important to have leaders in the community to speak to fellow community members about issues that can affect them. The key to protecting coral reefs or any ocean habitat is effective management, but you can't have effective management without good data that cover large areas. Oftentimes, your funding or the technology, or both will limit the monitoring program you need to develop the management strategy that you need to protect the Ocean. Coral habitats are no different. There are many threats against corals and management will be key to their protection; however, the technology that is needed to determine the health of coral reefs is either non-existent or super expensive...until now. Arizona State University's Asner Lab used a  new imaging technology that was able to determine between live and dead corals during a monitoring program that covered the eight major Hawaiian islands. A regular program to detect live and dead coral can help managers pinpoint areas that are in need of management compared to others that are doing better (higher percentage of coral cover).  The big question is can we fund this program long-term. The word "TRUMP" was written on the back of a Manatee to the outrage of many people around the world.  The political war going on between Trump supporters and the House/Senate last week spilled over to the environment as a manatee was discovered to be swimming with the word TRUMP on its back.  When I first read the article, I was worried that the word was carved into the back of the peaceful marine mammal; however, after looking at the picture and getting confirmation from another article, I was relieved to hear that animal was not mutilated. The word was written by scraping off the algae to make the word like someone would write "Clean Me" on the back window of a dirty car. The fact the word was written on such a magnificent animal was a kick in the teeth to all environmentalists as the Trump administration has been anything but friendly to the US (and global) environment. The administration dismantled the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), rolled back policies that were designed to protect the environment, and called open season for oil and gas exploration.  The incident is a great representation of how 2021 is starting off: it awful what happened to the manatee, but it's not as bad as we initially thought! A clash between fishermen and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) lead to one dead and one injured after the SSCS ship collided with the fishermen's panga boat and split it in two.  Reports of the incident differ on both sides. The fishermen alleged that the Sea Shepherd's ship targeted the panga with the intention of sinking it by collision. Sea Shepperd, and the Mexican Navy officials on board the ship, alledged that the fishermen were throwing homemade bombs, knives, hammers, and other objects at their ship to stop them from doing their work.  Sea Shepherd is working with the Mexican government to retrieve illegal gill nets in the Sea of Cortez to prevent the incidental catch of Vaquitas while fishermen target the totoaba fish.  Vaquitas are critically endangered marine mammals listed on the IUCN Red list and it is estimated that there are only 10 individuals left. The totoaba is also endangered as they have been targeted for their swim bladders in Asian countries as it is believed that it boosts fertility.  Links to articles: 1) https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/border-baja-california/story/2021-01-05/baja-fisherman-dies-vaquita-conservationists 2) https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/nation-world/story/2021-01-01/fishermen-attack-conservationists-in-mexico-2-injured Want To Talk Oceans? There are many problems facing the Ocean today: Overfishing, plastic pollution, climate change are just a few of the major ones. However, there are solutions that are currently being implemented and working in particular parts of the world. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are one of those solutions that have helped protect many places from overfishing if implemented properly.  A successful MPA requires the proper funding to assemble stakeholders, plan the MPA, implement the MPA, and enforce and manage the MPA. Simon Cripps, the Executive Director for the Global Marine Program at the Wildlife Conservation Society, penned an article in Mongabay News to discuss the importance of finding sustainable funding to support MPAs beyond the deadlines for specific targets (30% of Oceans under protection).  Simon is concerned that developing countries may not be able to rely on funds from other countries, foundations and/or non-governmental organizations (NGOs). He is worried that countries are at the behest of the political party in power and foundations don't always have the only available to provide support.  Where will they be able to find sustainable funding? Ii would love to hear your ideas. Link to article: https://news.mongabay.com/2020/12/sustainable-financing-is-pivotal-for-marine-conservation-beyond-2030-pledges-commentary/ Want To Talk Oceans? The materials in clothes have also changed to be less environmentally-friendly.  Cait and I discuss the financial and environmental advantages of second-hand clothing as well as slowly building your wardrobe with more expensive, but ethical and sustainable clothing.  Cait's Links: Website: https://www.caitmizzi.ca/ The NOSH Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-nosh-podcast/id1541465551 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/caitmizzi/ Register for the Mindful Conservation Conference:  https://www.absolutelysmashingllc.com/mindful-conference Want To Talk Oceans? Cait Mizzi joins me again for our second part of our conversation on trying to lead a life with less waste. We discuss products that we use every day that come in bad packaging and how I would like to reduce the number of recycling materials I put out once a week as we know many products are not readily recycled.
