It seems we hear, in every other episode, about the need for qualified trained trades people. So, when I had a chance to speak with Marty Riesberg, Electrical Training Alliance Director, I jumped at the opportunity to understand the current state of technical training. The Electrical Training Alliance or ETA, created in 1941, to standardize the training for the NECA employers and the electricians that work for them so that they can be more mobile. They work with 300 Training Centers or JATC's across the country. Marty began his electrical training at Western Iowa Technical Community College, then worked for a residential contractor and joined the Omaha Joint Electrical Apprenticeship and Training Committee's Inside Program. After completing the program, he became a Journeyman Inside Wireman. In 2001, he was named Assistant Training Director for the Omaha Electrical JATC and served as an instructor for seven years. A member of IBEW LU 22 since 1992, Marty joined the NJATC in 2006 to develop a Building Automation curriculum and later became Director of Curriculum Development, overseeing curricula for around 300 local training centers. He currently manages the electrical training ALLIANCE's Training Partner Program. He holds a Bachelor's in Business Administration from the National Labor College and a Master's in Leadership from Georgetown University. Marty and I are going to discuss how training is changing and where it's moving forward to support the industry. The idea that technology may be able to directly capture and control our thoughts is both fascinating and scary. But this type of technology has been around and is continues to be developed for a variety of applications. In this episode, we speak to Dr. Susan Boehnke about brain computer interfaces and neuromarketing. We dive into the ethical implications of brain-computer interface (BCI) applications—are these technologies enhancing human potential or invading our privacy? We also unpack how the media's portrayal of BCIs often exaggerates their capabilities, contrasting it with their real-world use. Plus, we explore neuromarketing: the fascinating history of how companies use brain data to influence your choices and shape marketing strategies. Don't miss this eye-opening conversation! Susan Boehnke completed a PhD in Neuroscience (2002) at Dalhousie University as a Killam Scholar using psychophysical and neurophysiological approaches to examine spatial processing in the auditory system. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in primate visual and oculomotor neurophysiology with Prof. Doug Munoz at Queen's Univ. In collaboration with Profs. Munoz and De Felice (Brazil), she took a lead role in the creation and validation of one of the first non-human primate (NHP) models of Alzheimer's disease using behavioural, neurophysiological, neuroimaging, and molecular approaches. She led development of the first NHP biobank in Canada, and the establishment of normative values of fluid biomarkers of neurodegeneration in macaques. During COVID, her team used the NHP facility at Queen's to explore the effect of social enrichment and isolation on the brain. In response to recent explosion of interest in neurotechnology, such as brain computer interfaces, she has now turned her attention to creating a micro-credential program in neurotechnology (https://neurotechmicrocreds.com/) and exploring ethical issues related to neurotech. She is also the lead of the Training Committee for Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society, a large Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) program between York and Queen's Universities. This episode is sponsored by the Connected Minds program. Connected Minds, funded by the Canadian First Research Excellence Fund, is a 7-year collaborative program between York University and Queen's University that focuses on interdisciplinary, ethical, and socially responsible research and technology development. The program offers funding for trainees, researchers, and artists. To learn more and get involved, visit the Connected Minds website. Today we're diving deep into the world of precision and craftsmanship—two crucial elements in the realm of hand soldering and rework of circuit assemblies.Whether you're a seasoned electronics enthusiast, a hobbyist, or just someone with a curious mind, this episode promises to demystify the art and science behind hand soldering and rework. We'll be exploring the latest tools, techniques, and trends that define this intricate process, shedding light on the unsung heroes who meticulously bring circuit assemblies to life, or in the case of rework, back to life. There is archaeological evidence that soldering was employed as early as 5,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. Soldering and brazing are thought to have originated very early in the history of metal-working, before 4000 BC. Sumerian swords from 3000 BC were assembled using hard soldering techniques. While soldering applications have morphed and expanded over the centuries, the basic “rules” of soldering have not. On this episode, we're going to talk about an obvious soldering application, at least to my audience, and that's soldering of electronic assemblies. From the evolution of hand soldering with numerous technological advancements to the challenges faced by DIYers and professionals alike, we've got it all covered, thanks to my subject matter expert guest, Debbie Wade. About the episode: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the US called last year the hottest on record “by far”. During the year we saw many climate-related catastrophes – from large scale fires to unprecedented flooding. And yet, for some, the science of climate change is controversial. Many claim that even climate scientists don't believe it can be attributed to anthropogenic actions. To understand what climate scientists really believe, we thought we'd speak with one. Professor Russchenberg leads the Climate Institute at the Technical University of Delft and is the scientific director of the national Ruisdael Observatory, both in the Netherlands, an apt choice given that roughly one third of the Netherlands lies below sea level (the lowest being 6.7 metres below) and, so, rising sea levels are an issue. In this episode, Professor Russchenberg and Toby Corballis discuss what businesses can do, the role of technology in mitigating some of the worst effects, why we're seeing recent events, the warming of the oceans, and where we're headed. Importantly, we ask what role business can play in helping to mitigate some of the worst effects of climate change. Guest Name: Professor Herman Russchenberg With decades of industry experience, Andrew Gordon-Brooks has built his career across Telco, Finance & Media with both global enterprises and early stage startups. Many midlife women that I work with, and are friends with, fear getting breast cancer more than heart disease. The focus on cardiovascular health is often not listed on my client's health history form as an area of concern. Did you know that heart disease is the #1 cause of death for both women and men? Over 60M women in the U.S. live with some form of heart disease. While there are many unique risk factors for women developing heart disease, which we are going to cover in this episode, one of them is the menopausal transition. All women will experience menopause, and while some develop worse symptoms than others, the door to the 4 horsemen of chronic disease states opens up: Alzheimer's Disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.Navigating one's risk of heart disease is almost impossible to do in the conventional medical healthcare model, which is set up to help you after you've had a cardiac event, not prevent it from happening. The amount of information on the topic, specifically as it relates to midlife women, is next to silent. Women are struggling to have conversations with their doctors about menopause, let alone heart health. In doing research to prepare for this episode, I was challenged to find articles and podcasts related to midlife women and CVD risk, treatments, and lifestyle interventions. I found plenty in the scientific data, but my clients, who are non-medical midlife women, don't look there for the latest science. Most of my clients are also not having discussions about nutrition, sleep, stress management, and exercise with their doctors.I am honored to have a very special guest today, who is going to help all of us midlife women understand what our CVD risks are, what we can do to prevent heart disease, what labs and tests to ask for from our doctors, and how menopause and menopause hormone therapy play a role in increasing or decreasing our risk.Dr. Garima Sharma, MD received her Internal Medicine and Cardiology fellowship training at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia. Let's face it – not many enjoy going to training. Being away from home, living on Virginia Avenue for weeks at a time, feeling the stress and pressure of a fast-paced course in a new airplane or an upgrade to Captain or both at the same time is never an easy feeling. Delta and the Delta MEC want you to succeed in training. On this episode of Engage, Host First Officer Ryan Argenta gets tips, tricks, and tidbits on how to best succeed in training from Captain Tony Rohloff, a seasoned professional from the Training Committee. Tony not only gives his best advice on how to (more) easily get through training but also walks us through the process of training issues and failures which he affectionately calls “stubbing your toe”. Have family or a personal issue while in training? Tony explains how to get the time off you need. New hire at Delta? Tony has specific advice for you. Boeing to Airbus conversion? Tony has you covered. Tune in and succeed in training. (Recorded May 5, 2023)

In all of our relationships, we bring our history, the roles we've played, our strategies for belonging, our privilege, and our worldview to the dynamic. In this episode, we get to hear from two deeply reflective mental health workers, who spend much of their time attempting to redefine helping relationships within and outside the system, about their personal experiences with love and relationships. They shed light on their process for communication and the values they share that sometimes also apply to how they show up for friends, family, and their clients. We also discuss: lessons learned from past relationships and examining what you want to do differently understanding your role in the family, in society, your privilege and worldview, and how that impacts how you relate what it looks like to process and communicate about needs and emotions the process of repair after conflict and receiving feedback from a partner with real life examples relating to clients authentically as a mental health worker, understanding power dynamics and determining your personal values Leah Pressman (she/her) and Jay Stevens (he/him) live and work together in New York City with their three cats. GUESTBettina Johnson is a Chicago born and raised abolitionist organizer, Co-founder and current Steering Committee member of Liberation Library and on the Steering Committee for the AfroSocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus of the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). She is also on the Steering Committee of Chicago DSA’s #DefundCPD Campaign, and Co-lead for the Training Committee of the Black Abolitionist Network-steered #DefundCPD CampaignOVERVIEWBrownTown invites Bettina Johnson to talk all things #DefundCPD campaign, nuances and strategies for abolitionist organizing, non-hierarchal structures, building responsive institutions, and training the newly politicized.Bettina begins by sharing her journey growing up in Chicago and finding her movement home in various organizations. The gang compares and contrasts their work and thoughts on abolition and broader "defund police" campaigns pre- and post-George Floyd uprisings before digging into the momentum theory of organizing--turning the energy and politicization of highly visible moments into sustainable movements. As Bettina notes, "we need as many people and as many entry points to start that [politicization] process that feels good for people." BrownTown and Bettina discuss various entry points into grassroots work and the non-hierarchal structures and autonomous actions that folks are encouraged to take within more current and common decentralized movements. Near the end of the conversation, the gang gets in the weeds about #DefundCPD in Chicago and other defund campaigns nation-wide naming the specific campaign goals as abolitionist steps and not a reformist reforms. However, they center nuanced inter-movement discussions about the role of "refunding" and what responsive institutions should and could like that that do not re-ify the harm of the prison-industrial complex under a different name.#DefundCPD educated, organized, and mobilized thousands of Chicagoans around the abolitionist demand to defund the Chicago Police Department on the heels of a global uprisings against state violence and white supremacy and for Black lives. Now, a campaign coming out of hibernation in April 2021, what lessons have we learned from 2020? Why is hibernation necessary for movement work? Building upon years, decades, centuries of work, what types of organizing strategies and tactics need we build on or alter in terms of autonomous coalition-building, trust in camaraderie, and exhausting all of our skills in our work towards liberation? Here's their take.--Follow Bettina on Twitter!Follow Liberation Library on their site, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.Follow Chicago's AfroSocialists & Socialists of Color Caucus via Linktree, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.Follow the #DefundCPD campaign via Linktree, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.--CREDITS: Intro/outro song Fuck Tha Police by NWA. In Episode 29. Luke talks to music therapist and GIM practitioner/trainer Martin Lawes. Martin qualified as a music therapist in 1999. Since then his work has been in special needs education, in adult mental health (including eating disorders, acute and forensic psychiatry) and in palliative care. He is a BAMT registered supervisor and has been visiting lecturer on several of the music therapy MA trainings. Martin is additionally qualified in Guided Imagery and Music, GIM. He is a former chair of both the Education and Training Committee, and the board of the European Association of Music and Imagery, EAMI. Martin is also an approved GIM trainer and founder of the London based Integrative GIM Training Programme which is delivered by a team of experienced GIM trainers and researchers from the UK, Europe and the US. Martin’s aspiration is that GIM will gradually become as established in UK music therapy as it is in some other European countries, with therapists equipped to use a range of research-based GIM and simpler Music and Imagery, or MI methods, that complement their existing ways of working and extend what they have to offer clients. Martin has published a number of articles. One is about the evaluation of music therapy with children with autism. Others are about the application of contemporary psychoanalytic thinking to music therapy and about GIM. Martin currently has an article in press in the BJMT about the therapist’s use of reverie, or ‘dreaming in music’ as he calls it, in improvisation-based music therapy. Luke and Martin talk about the music experience which led Martin to train in music therapy, about GIM and MI, and about ‘dreaming in music’. Low back pain is among the most common chronic pain conditions in Canada. Four out of five adults will experience at least one episode of back pain at some time in their lives. The cause of back pain, however, is not always apparent; in fact, in approximately 85% to 90% of individuals with back pain, no specific cause can be identified. To help us better understand this common condition and learn how to manage low back pain, we speak with Dr Owen Williamson. Dr Williamson is an orthopaedic spine surgeon and specialist pain medicine physician. He is also an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. In 2007, Dr Williamson became the first orthopaedic surgeon in Australia to become a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2007. He is on the Education and Training Committee and an examiner for the Faculty of Pain Medicine and is involved in the development of pain education programs in both Australia and Canada.
