Text: Exodus 16:1 - 17:7 Title: Saved to Be Tested 1. The LORD Tests Us… to Show Us our Self-Absorption. 2. The LORD Tests Us… to Train Us in Trust and Obedience. 3. The LORD Tests Us… so that We'll Know Him as the Bread of Life.
Are people more self-absorbed these days? Has the proliferation of social media, polarization, and the decline of traditional religious affiliation made it easier for people to be more self-absorbed and less interested in the possibilities and demands of sharing in community? What about self-awareness? How can the cultivation of self-awareness help us address what seems like a self-absorption epidemic. During the first half of the discussion, we reflect on the above questions and try to get a handle on what it's like to pastor, live, and have faith in a seemingly more self-absorbed world. The second half of the discussion will focus on exploring our journey to deepening self-awareness and how that practice can offer us a way out of the collective naval gazing.

In this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, Adam Aronovich, PhD(c) returns to discuss issues of psychedelic self-absorption—and how to avoid these traps. According to Adam, he is a PhD candidate in medical anthropology, the creator and curator of Healing from Healing, a trophy husband and dad. In this conversation, Adam revisits his previous discussion of psychedelic narcissism and explains why he's now somewhat more critical of the term. However, Adam still sees issues around cultivating epistemic humility and acknowledging the political dimensions of healing in psychedelic contexts. He explains the issues he takes with forms of New Age, Neoliberal spiritual perspectives he sees as pervasive and typically unacknowledged amongst many engaging with psychedelics. He also discusses how some pop psychology terms have worked their way into the psychedelic realm and what impacts that has had. In this episode: The “spectacle” of filmed psychedelic experiences on social media The intersection of medical and spiritual cultures in psychedelics and how this can create issues of access The cheapening and overuse of the idea of “trauma” in popular discourse and the birth of “traumadelic” culture Why approaches focusing on excavating supposed repressed traumatic memories from childhood should be approached with a degree of skepticism Quotes: “One of the main things with plant medicine—particularly when people are sharing about it—is that people want to be really vulnerable and people want to be very authentic… But at the intersection with the spectacle, that vulnerability and authenticity become part of the spectacle in the sense that they become 100% performative.” [19:01] “The people who don't have that modicum of self awareness and epistemic humility to really understand, with intellectual honesty, the scope of their understanding and knowledge, then it is very easy to overdo it. And then we do a disservice, not only to the actual traditions that we purport to be portraying, but also to the people that we're working with.” [37:56] “If you don't understand that your healing is political, because individual health, and individual happiness, and individual everything is intrinsically related to collective health, and social health, and cultural health, and environmental health, then you need to go back to square one because you haven't understood anything. ” [40:02] “If we can't even fathom that perhaps my own wellbeing is in constant dialogue with the wellbeing of a society, and the wellbeing of a culture, and the wellbeing of an environment—that nobody can be healthy and happy unless everybody else is relatively healthy and happy—then we are in big trouble and we haven't really learned everything.” [40:20] Links: Healing from Healing website Healing from Healing on Instagram Healing from Healing on Facebook Adam on Instagram Society Of The Spectacle by Guy Debord Wikipedia entry on the Satanic panic Previous episode: Navigating Psychedelic Narcissism with Adam Aronovich Previous episode: How Western Medicine and Indigenous Traditions Differ in their Approach to Mental Health and Healing with Adam Aronovich Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui

Today we're focusing on self-absorption – being highly preoccupied with your own concerns, your inner thoughts, or yourself in general. Depression can be viewed as an "implosion of the self" which creates self-absorption. I'm speaking of self-absorption not in a condescending or judgmental way, but as a way of helping the person who's depressed, as well as the people who are trying to love them, to understand how two possible components of depression – anhedonia and apathy - can be perceived in relationships as self-centeredness or self-absorption. And, as always, what to do about it. The listener voicemail this week is from a woman whose mother is always "one-upping" her, meaning her mom says she hurts more, or has accomplished more... the topic doesn't really matter. Her mother doesn't offer affirmation for her daughter, but remains in a weird kind of competition with her. And her daughter is very, very lonely. Vital Links for Today! We only understand what love is because of Jesus. He taught us all we needed to know about genuine love by laying down His life for us.God loves all people equally, regardless of race, religion, gender, age, social status, etc. He loves all people because he created them in his own image and he cares for them like a parent loves a child. God loves all creation, both spiritual and natural. And he wants us to love and care for one another in the same way he loves us.Tune in now, and let's go bigger, better, and deeper! This week a Peter K. Newman of Dayton, Ohio wrote a letter to the editors of the Wall Street Journal in which he tells the following joke: A departing CEO met with his successor, presented him with three numbered envelopes and advised him to open these if he ran into trouble. After sales and profits dropped during the next quarter, the new CEO opened the first envelope. It contained the message: “Blame your predecessor.” The company continued to struggle during the next two quarters, so the new CEO opened the second envelope. It contained the message: “Distract your critics by reorganizing.” Finally, because the company's year-end results were still disappointing, the new CEO rushed to his office and opened the third envelope. It contained the message: “Prepare three envelopes.” This joke is about the danger of repeating unfortunate patterns that we inherit; and the flip side of the joke is that it invites us to think about how we might transcendthe unfortunate patterns that we inherit. Because the new CEO could not transcend the troubled trends of the old CEO he shared the same fate as the old CEO. When we realize that we have inherited a pattern that is not healthy, how do we transcend it?

Kathryn has been on my list to chat with for the podcast since the very beginning and did not disappoint. ;) So much so I even ask her a bonus question at the end! We worked together at our church for a short time and then she followed God's directing to a missionary opportunity with an organization in Germany called Eurobrass. She talks about a variety of things that stir her love for God, the slippery slope of self-absorption and a lot about God's faithfulness. One line: "The truth that God is faithful means a lot to me, because that's where our security is. It's not in what we do. And it's certainly not in how we're feeling and how close God feels to us. It's all tied up in him. And not in us." Enjoy this one, friends!

3/21/2022 There are times when we can be totally consumed and self-absorbed by something. It can be a good thing – a project or task or relationship – but it can consume all of us and effect us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. We can't always let go of the thing, but we can take a pause and release the grip we have on it and it has on us. In this episode we will try to counteract the effects that this thing has on us, by settling our bodies, quieting our minds, opening our hearts, and connecting our spirits to God, so we can come back to the thing with integration to our whole being and a sense of freedom. One of the greatest disservices you can do to yourself is allowing a lie to become your reality. In this episode, I talk about the idea of self-absorption in the form of fear. We can either silently self-absorb or loudly do so. Whichever it is, we need to caution ourselves to avoid allowing fear to become our god.

how to be grateful for the trash
How good is it when we feel we are the most important person in someone else’s world? That’s what we want our customers to feel. But self-absorption leads to a focus on our own priorities and pressures, and customers quickly feel like one more thing to deal with. This episode covers some ideas for turning this around.
When was the last time you felt grateful? Do you appreciate the small things or do you tend to neglect small things? The achieve a happier, healthier, wealthier life we have to develop the ability to look back and see how far we have come. We have to embrace our struggles and continue to push forward. We're all part of a very self-centered culture and in order for the Holy Spirit to come in power, this must self-absorption must come to an end by the power of Jesus for each one of us. It won't happen if we try to do it in our own power and strength, nor will it come if we fail to see the great need in our hearts. Are you interested in having this battle over self be finished? If so, listen and allow the Holy Spirit to deal with your heart today.

I always thought that people who said those things were really saying "shut up" in a polite way. From time to time, we really do need to preach to the choir, because it's how our support system stays connected.Self absorption vs. audience engagement is sometimes the difference between success and failure for us musicians, artists, actors, etc. Something to bear in mind as we pursue and perfect our crafts. If you like this podcast, check out Ken's weekly blog posts. Escape Self-Absorption, Let Go of The Ego Written and narrated by Leigh Martinuzzi We can have everything we want in life by escaping our self-absorption. Everything! It is not that we should deny self-care or self-love. We shouldn’t seek to abandon our search and satisfaction of our primary human needs – food, shelter, belongingness, survival. Self-absorption is allowing the ego to rule and letting it obsess over fulfilling false needs. Here are my thoughts on how we can understand and let go of the ruling ego. Enjoy!

They also offer a solution to break out of the spiral. Enjoy!

Fellas, undersized T-shirts and self absorption are not good traits.
Trump Leads a Listening Session on Domestic and International Trafficking. "we will always defend the very first right in the Declaration of Independence, that is the right to life. Reports of unprecedented number of arrests made in child trafficking rings worldwide, clearly demonstrate that law enforcement is finally treating the global epidemic seriously. Yet the systematic kidnapping, torturing of children by highly organized trafficking rings have barely if at all even scratched the surface of mainstream media coverage, which has chosen to act as a complicit accomplice and partner-in-crime in the unholiest of alliances, consistently ignoring child trafficking rings being operated by powerful members of the world's elite ruling class. White House report showed that 518 victims of human trafficking were rescued and 1,602 trafficking suspects were arrested in 2017 by a unit at the Department of Homeland Security...a government-funded human-trafficking hotline received reports leading to the identification of 21,644 victims. On Tuesday, April 10, 2018, Trey and Stephanie Cashion decided to share some practical blessings and fruits that they have experienced in marriage and that have come about through a knowledge of the invisible reality of the sacrament. The fruit that was discussed the most was a gradual weeding out of self-absorption through the promotion of selfless service in the family. This attitude of selfless service is essential in the family in order to see our family members not as hindrances but as missions to love as Christ loves His Church. Our memory verse this week was Ephesians 5:25, "Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her." Self-absorption is the opposite of the love described in 1 Corinthians 13. Many sins emerge out of a self-absorbed heart. But, the gospel obliterates selfishness and self-absorption and creates benevolence in the heart. Like the rich younger ruler, we may come to Jesus with an eagerness to serve him. But one thing blocked the rich young ruler from salvation in Christ: his love for money. Likewise, in America, self-absorption blocks many from conversion and salvation. There is no way around […]
THIS EPISODE: We're not going to make the Peaches personal issue a matter of universal importance. The "Milk Mafia" returns. Peaches gives a spirit filled update on the state of breastfeeding awareness. And while this topic makes you squeamish, Pkarlgh, this isn't really all about breastfeeding. It's about self-awareness. It's about selfishness. And we discuss it with our usual irreverence. A girl was killed by an exploding can of whipped cream. This has to end... We contemplate the ceremonial difference between the first child and the 2nd child's milestones. Peaches still claims to love her children equally but the evidence proves otherwise... DISCLAIMER: There's some drama coming! Pkarlina received a vulgar Facebook post! You've been warned... I don't think it's strange to introduce yourself to people via printed flyers. Peaches thinks it's weird to put breast milk on breakfast cereal. She's so closed minded. Attention and approval are kinda like drugs. When you get addicted, you never have enough. Public rights are different from private rights. This is the real issue. (It's not about breastfeeding, really...) When you don't care what other people think of your behavior, you're often being a jerk. The application is this. Are there Christian people who treat their Christianity like breastfeeding? (Yes! There certainly are!) I give a super helpful illustration (using roller-blading) to reveal when you're behavior might be inappropriate. We reminisce about sometimes when we had to do stuff we didn't really want to do and Cami terrorized other children in the church nursery. Mom's are great. They really are! And they're the most dangerous creatures on Earth at times. There are no normal people. Everyone is abnormal. Everyone is terrible. Everyone. Boys aren't supposed to hit girls and some girls are taking full advantage of that!
One of the implied requirements to being a part of the Elijah company, is an utter end to the self absorption. It’s quite literally consumed most of my life “to be all you can be” and this is something that only Jesus can change. I encourage you to prayerfully listen and allow the Holy Spirit to quicken the message to your heart. It’s time to grow up in Jesus and allow God to begin to mold the Elijah company. I […]

in week three of our Killjoy series, Pastor Jim teaches that in order to gain Freedom From Self-Aborption, to move from self-centeredness to others-centeredness, we must first change the way we think.

Ephesians 4:1-5:2
We look at proverbs and address the most dangerous viper of all sins, Pride.

Contrary to the media hype that today's teens are more self-absorbed than generations past, Canadian researchers have found zero evidence for any increase in narcissism, which includes arrogance and self-entitlement, over the last three decades.
