A Line, a succession of points, a fine line, a route; or many, like when talking about LINE as a label, house, family and source of inspiration founded by sound artist Richard Chartier 22 years ago. Sometimes conceptual, sometimes abstract, sometimes somewhere between the two, or just out of any category, the works published by this label condense a vast and exotic catalogue of sound art, initially created as a division of the mythical 12k, to later become independent in its own search, permeated by a marked but broad vision of sonic minimalism. Among LINE's catalogue, there are true jewels of experimental contemporary music and sound art, such as the legendary Series by Richard Chartier, the compilation Between Two Points, the tribute/non-tribute to John Cage by Lawrence English, and the special Forms of Paper by Steve Roden, considered one of the essential works of the so-called lowercase movement, characterized by music played at low sound levels and lacking in prominence pretensions, a sonic philosophy close to that many of the label's releases. Each release is characterized by always bringing true sonic rarities to the label's universe, one of the most select and diverse catalogues of contemporary sound art, where the meeting of sonority and concept not only satisfies the listener's ears: it extends them, shows something that is very difficult to find elsewhere. This 64-minute mix is a selection of the history of LINE since 2000, focusing on an overlaying of shorter pieces and excerpts to give an idea of the variety of sounds, aesthetics, and compositions of the label. So many of the works on LINE are longer, extended experiences. This is merely a taster. I'm still swamped with work, especially now that the semester has begun. New episodes will arrive later this fall. Until then, here is another bonus mix. It's probably my favorite mix I've ever done, made for Secret Thirteen, originally published in December 2014. S13 founder Justinas Mikulskis writes: “Secret Thirteen 139” is a picturesque and unique mix composed by Joseph Sannicandro. This mix is like a truly precious musical treasure every die-hard music lover could be searching for ages. In this over 1 hour long musical mosaic Joseph connects 55 pieces by his beloved and inspirational artists such as Tim Hecker, Vladislav Delay, Jon Hassell, Giuseppe Ielasi, Hue, Nicola Ratti, Machinefabriek, Klaus Schulze, MB, Steve Roden and many others, to form a complex, but at the same time a delightful soundscape. The opening and closing recordings by his The New Objective project tightly binds the overall mix's concept and mood. The mix radiates a strange musical luminosity, which guides the mind and the soul to the pure infinite satisfaction even when it is played in complete darkness. Divine ambiance, unexpected twists between music genres, fluid melodies and harmonious and thoughtful attitude to even the smallest details bring this mix to another dimension, a dimension where the nature meets man and his fundamental desire to perceive cosmos. As Joseph whispered, the mix could stand in parallel with Giuseppe Penone's metaphorical sculpture “The Hidden Life Within“. And it's quite a good example, because both, mix and sculpture, are based on the magical and fantastic groundwork, also the form, which could not be replicated. In the beginning we asked Joseph to interpret the outer space theme with his mix through his own perspective, but in the end the recording expanded into a much deeper, more metaphysical exploration of the whole universe with all it's phenomenons and wonders. Please, take a moment to read Joseph's keen comment about the mix. Work. Got a couple tasks done. But we're about to get totally overwhelmed with work. Eek. Hopefully get an early start tomoz. Was listening to a few Steve Roden albums on repeat all day. So good. Perfect music. Fed a magpie and followed it down the road a bit after it picked up a few hunks of meat and walked off with them without eating them. I thought it hid some meat away in some grass for later. I checked but couldn't find it where I thought it had hidden it. It was doing something queer though because why else had it eaten a few bits at home but then chosen to take the other bits away - especially because it had to stop a few times to rearrange its carry. I'll keep an eye on it. The story from the other day with the anti-masker bashing the cop with the metal bat developed further today. Reports say that the son grabbed the cops taser and shot it off and was also going for their pistol. What the hell! The cops pulled their guns on these bedlamites and were going to shoot - but couldn't get a clean shot. Insane that there was nearly gun fire right across the paddock from home. Yikes. Wonder if the mum will be spotted out and about without the son, while the dad and son are in custody. Very interesting. This morning while I was watering the planters that I put up on the back fence, I liked seeing rainbows in the spray from the hose. And this evening on a walk with mum and Ash, a wave crashed on a reef and white of the wave caught the colour of the setting sun. Really nice and golden, glowing sunset tonight actually. M: 4. E: 4. They discuss whether art can exist without constraints; his enthusiasm for "dumb ideas," such as painting with his mouth; the influence of Buckminster Fuller's Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth, which he found in a gutter as a kid; the inspiration a Jimi Hendrix impersonator gave him, and how he went on to enter the Los Angeles punk scene of the late seventies and early eighties; his punk band's catalog, including such songs as "Kill Reagan" and "Jesus Needs a Haircut"; his skill set consisting primarily of patience and the ability to evolve slowly; working in forms that admit the most failure, and thus produce the most interestingness; the days when he would hang out at the Westwood Tower Records until midnight, and the clerk that gave him an all-important copy of Brian Eno's Another Green World; the beauty of playing an instrument you know nothing about, and of other ideas born of incomplete information; his involvement with languages he doesn't speak, including researching Walter Benjamin without German, studying in Paris without French, and translating Swedish poetry without Swedish; finding the unknown in Los Angeles, and what it means to be able to traverse the city with ease or difficulty; the importance of maintaining a one-man practice; and his uncommonly fruitful experiences reading liner notes.

"We were playing Hide and Seek on a Cemetery Hill... ...quiet hiding in the flowers...among the Flowers and Bones..." Atmospheric drones slowly unfold into childhood memories ... Peaceful melancholic romanticism, but gradually overshadowed by fear of something out of control? Toshiya Tsunoda - Appearance of physical vibration: These recordings are studies of the sonic effects of physical vibration Track 1 - high frequency on a plate glass - 05:46 "Seven piezo ceramic discs are connected with an sine wave generator - and the discs are on a plate glass. Same frequency is output to the piezo discs The frequency shifts slowly and continuously from 9000hz to 20000hz. Due to this, you can listen various sounds made by high-speed cyclic contact between piezo disc and a plate glass, like a ball dribbles. This recording is a private live performance at my room." Track 2 - top of amplitude - 08:25 "I detected the top and bottom of the amplitude from a certain audio signal by a precious gate device. L channel is top (plus level), R channel is bottom (minus level)." Track 3 - on electromagnetic siren - 05:26 "Output an audio signal to the coil of an 100hz electromagnetic siren. The electromagnetic siren vibrates, so you can listen to the amplitude changes according to an audio signal on R channel. L channel, connected by an electrical wire to small metal reeds on the siren which acts like a switch to transmit any vibration from the coil. You can listen intermittently to any change in the vibration. In this work, there are two ways of description; the R channel is continual or linear, the L channel is intermit or dotted." ["The audio signals of tracks 2 and 3 are field recordings source material - environmental sounds from the suburbs. Track 2 was recorded by me, in Fukada-dai, Yokosuka City, Japan, c. 1997. Track 3 was recorded by Steve Roden somewhere in California. Track 3 was made for Steve Roden's installation project several years before which was held in a certain museum of California. This material has not been released on any recording media."
