See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Nullus in orbe sinus Baiis praelucet amoenis”.

Sino-Italian Political and Economic Relations: From the Treaty of Friendship to the Second World War (Routledge, 2024) presents a comprehensive narrative and historical analysis of the political and economic relations between China and Italy from the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce signed in October 1866 to the Second World War. Utilizing primary sources found in public and private archives, the volume acknowledges the relevance of eminent figures and their roles and contributions in developing the relations between Italy and China. It provides an extensive presentation of the close relations between the Chinese nationalist and Italian fascist regimes and their interaction in the interwar period. The Italian and Chinese governments had a prolonged political and economic dialogue, which lasted for almost a decade and involved the active mediation of politicians, economists, academics, and professionals at different levels and in diverse fields. International historiography mostly neglects the relevance of this period in broader historical contexts. This work overcomes the unjustified oversight and examines, with reliable primary sources, the relevance of this extraordinary season of international relations. With a valuable exploration of a wealth of sources, this book provides a new opportunity of reflection for scholars and students interested in Sino-European relations and international history.

Since joining the museum in 1988, she has reinstalled the collections of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and 18th-century European painting and sculpture three times, and organized two major international exhibitions. In 2022, the museum will organize a major, international exhibition curated by Mann that examines the art of painting on stone, a practice that flourished in Europe—particularly Italy—in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 2015, the Association of Art Museum Curators and the American Academy in Rome awarded Mann the Samuel H. Kress Foundation AAMC Affiliated Fellowship in order to allow her to continue her research into painting on stone in Rome.——- Mann curated “Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi: Father and Daughter Painters in Baroque Italy,” which opened at Rome's Palazzo Venezia and later was seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Saint Louis Art Museum, as well as the 2012 exhibition “Federico Barocci: Renaissance Master,” which was presented at the Saint Louis Art Museum and the National Gallery, London. In recognition for her scholarship relating to the Barocci exhibition and catalogue, Mann received the Association of Art Museum Curators' Outstanding Monographic Exhibition Award. The Surprising Health Benefits of Not Wearing Sunglasses: Sun Exposure, Melanin, and Nitric Oxide

Tom Nikkola Audio Articles

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 15, 2023 11:50

The other day, Vanessa mentioned that she read that wearing sunglasses can make you more likely to get a sunburn. I hadn't heard that before. Maybe you have. But, I wasn't surprised. It seems that we often end up with unexpected consequences of modifying how our bodies have functioned in nature for thousands and thousands of years. Ironically, I'm wearing blue-blocking glasses right now as I type on my computer since it's after dark and eye exposure to blue light at night compromises sleep. So, it didn't seem far-fetched at all that blocking sunlight from the eyes during the day could have negative effects either. I investigated and found the currently available answers to the question: Do sunglasses make you more likely to get a sunburn? I also included some other information that might be helpful to understand. If nothing else, it should give you something to discuss while you lay by the pool, on a boat, or on the beach this summer. The Science of Sun Exposure You hardly hear of the health benefits of sun exposure anymore, but there are many. While it's true that excessive sun exposure can lead to sunburn, skin aging, and even skin cancer, we also need sun exposure for optimal health.Skin Cancer Foundation. (2021). Skin Cancer Facts & Statistics. Retrieved from https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/skin-cancer-facts/ Sunlight plays a crucial role in our overall health, particularly in producing vitamin D, which supports bone health, immune function, and numerous other physiological processes.Holick, M. F. (2004). Sunlight and vitamin D for bone health and prevention of autoimmune diseases, cancers, and cardiovascular disease. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 80(6), 1678S-1688S. However, the interplay between sunlight and our eyes is more complex than you might think. Some researchers, such as Dr. Richard Weller from the University of Edinburgh, have hypothesized that not wearing sunglasses could enhance the skin's natural photoprotection mechanisms, resulting in potential health benefits.Weller, R. B. (2013). Sunlight Has Cardiovascular Benefits Independently of Vitamin D. Blood Purification, 35(1-3), 5-11. The Role of Sunlight in Vitamin D Production Sunlight, specifically UVB radiation, is most people's primary vitamin D source. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, a process occurs that converts a cholesterol-like substance called 7-dehydrocholesterol into vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). This is then converted into its active form, calcitriol, in the liver and kidneys. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption, bone health, and proper immune system functioning, among other vital processes in the body. Melanin Production in Response to UV Radiation Melanin is a pigment produced by melanocytes in our skin. It serves several purposes, including protecting against UV radiation's harmful effects. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, melanocytes produce more melanin, which absorbs UV rays and helps prevent DNA damage, leading to a tanning effect.Mitra, D., Luo, X., Morgan, A., Wang, J., Hoang, M. P., Lo, J., Guerrero, C. R., Lennerz, J. K., Mihm, M. C., Wargo, J. A., Robinson, K. C., Devi, S. P., Vanover, J. C., D'Orazio, J. A., McMahon, M., Bosenberg, M. W., Haigis, K. M., Haber, D. A., Wang, Y., & Fisher, D. E. (2012). An ultraviolet-radiation-independent pathway to melanoma carcinogenesis in the red hair/fair skin background. Nature, 491(7424), 449-453. Photoprotection and Its Potential Benefits Photoprotection is the idea that our eyes may play a role in signaling our skin to produce melanin in response to sunlight. Although research in this area is still in its early stages, there is growing interest in understanding how our eyes and skin may be interconnected in their responses to sun exposure.Weller, R. B. (2013). Sunlight Has Cardiovascular Benefits Independently of Vitamin D. Blood Purification, 35(1-3), 5-11. Dr.

I encourage everyone to read it. Brimming with romance, comedy, drama, history, and family lines. It's everything." -Jeannie Gaffigan, Writer, Producer, New York Times Bestselling AuthorLetters from Italy is a story of true love that spans an ocean. Against all odds, an orphaned girl and a young dreamer find solace in a romance sparked by a single photo and years of transatlantic letters. From a tiny Italian town in pre-WWII to New York City in her golden age, hopeful immigrants take a chance at living the American dream. Set on the Puglian coast, a world comes alive with images of a fishing village, families from different socio-economic classes, and a love born out of chance. When they finally meet, Nicoletta and Orazio know they are destined to be together. Framed by the letters they wrote to each other, Letters from Italy takes us on a passage back through time with a romantic young couple whose devotion to one another prompted a bold journey in a foreign land.If you want to sponsor CJ Aggett on The Frontline 100k Walk, please visit here: https://events.soldierscharity.org/fundraisers/christopheraggettFOLLOW US► Our website - https://www.thewritingcommunitychatshow.com► Universal link - https://linktr.ee/TheWCCS► Buy the show a coffee - https://www.buymeacoffee.com/TheWCCS► Use hashtag #TheWritingCommunityChatShow or #TheWCCS on social media to keep us current. In this episode, we talk about management styles and goal setting, and uncover some gems about granting equity and hiring from our guest, Orazio Buzza, Founder and CEO of Fooda. Orazio has taken the startup ride from early on through exit twice already, before founding Fooda. Fooda is a food technology platform that connects restaurants to people while at work, has received $45M in funding, and currently has 250 employees in 20 cities.  He has a great take on goal setting that keeps people accountable, brings transparency to the entire organization, and keeps the team moving in the same direction.  Orazio's milestone approach to managing growth (vs. a calendar-based approach), makes sure that expenses don't outpace revenue as Fooda scales to new locations.  Who does Orazio see executing? John Bauschard, at Darwin AI.
