Un'orchidea straordinaria di H. G. Wells tempo di lettura: 12 minuti Se volete acquistare un'orchidea correte il rischio di un giuoco di borsa, fate come si dice volgarmente una speculazione. Avete innanzi agli occhi un pezzettino di velluto raggrinzito, di colore scuro, pel rimanente dovete rimettervi allo stimatore, al vostro gusto od alla fortuna. Può accadere che la pianta sia moribonda o morta, oppure che, dato il prezzo d'acquisto, abbiate fatto un buon affare. Può anche succedere, e questo caso è avvenuto molte volte, che a poco a poco, giorno per giorno, si sviluppi sotto gli occhi del fortunato compratore, qualche nuova varietà, qualche tesoro sconosciuto, qualche strano ravvolgimento del «labellum,»nota 1 oppure una delicata sfumatura od una smorfia inaspettata. Sopra un tenero e verde stelo sboccerà forse un fiore che sarà per voi orgoglio e profitto e che vi procurerà forse l'immortalità, perchè in tal caso sarà necessario indicare il nuovo miracolo della natura, con un nome nuovo. E questo nome non potrebbe essere forse quello dello scopritore? Era certamente la speranza di qualche scoperta fortunata che faceva assiduo frequentatore di vendite d'orchidee il signor Winter-Wedderburn. Egli però non aveva altre occupazioni. Era, timido e viveva appartato, era un essere completamente inutile; possessore di un reddito che gli bastava appena appena per sbarcarsela, e mancante di quell'energia necessaria a procurarsi un lavoro regolare. Egli avrebbe potuto benissimo collezionare francobolli o monete antiche o tradurre Orazio od anche rilegare libri; ma il caso volle che coltivasse orchidee, e che avesse un piccolo tepidario. — Ho in mente, – diss'egli un giorno sorbendo una tazza di caffè, – ho in mente che oggi mi accadrà qualcosa! Il suo parlare era lento come lenti erano i suoi movimenti ed i suoi pensieri. — Oh non dite ciò! – esclamò la governante che era una lontana cugina di Wedderburn. Quel: «mi accadrà qualcosa» voleva dire per lei una catastrofe imminente. — Voi mi capite male. Io non prevedo nulla di grave, benchè, in verità, io non sappia precisamente dirvi che cosa succederà. — Oggi; – seguitò a dire dopo una pausa, – Peters deve vendere uno stock di piante delle isole Andamannota 2 e delle Indie. Voglio vedere di che si tratta e potrebbe benissimo darsi il caso che io acquistassi qualche cosa di buono. – E così dicendo porse la tazza vuota alla cugina. — Si tratta forse di quella specie raccolta da quel povero giovane del quale mi parlaste l'altro giorno? – diss'ella colmando la tazza. — Sì, – rispose Winter, e guardando con aria medita bonda una fetta di pane e come parlando a sè stesso soggiunse: – Nulla succede a me! E perchè? Eppure molte cose succedono agli altri! Per esempio, Havery, non più tardi della settimana scorsa, il lunedì ha trovato dieci soldi, mercoledì tutti i suoi polli sono caduti ammalati, venerdì un suo cugino è tornato dall'Australia, sabato si è buscato una storta! Quale serie di emozioni mentre io…. — Preferirei, ne' vostri panni, non averne tante; è molto meglio. — Sì, avete ragione, tutto ciò deve essere noioso. Ma a me non succede mai nulla! Quando ero fanciullo non ho mai avuto disgrazie. Adulto, non ebbi mai folli passioni. Non mi sono mai ammogliato. Davvero che non so definire l'effetto che si deve provare quando vi succede qualcosa, qualcosa di veramente speciale. Quel raccoglitore d'orchidee non aveva che trentasei anni, venti anni meno di me, quando morì. Ed egli sì era ammogliato due volte, aveva divorziato una volta, quattro volte si era buscato le febbri di malaria, e si era rotta una gamba una volta! Un giorno uccise un Malese, ed un altro giorno fu ferito da una freccia avvelenata. Finalmente morì nella jungla succhiato dalle sanguisughe. Tutto ciò deve essere stato assai sgradevole, ma anche molto interessante, non è vero? fatta forse la debita eccezione per le sanguisughe…. Wedderburn meditò ancora, e guardando l'orologio: — Otto e ventitrè, – disse – Piglierò il treno delle undici e tre quarti, ho dunque più tempo del necessario. Metterò la giacca di alpacanota 3, il cappello a cencio grigio e lo scarpe gialle. Credo che…. S'interruppe; osservò dalla finestra il cielo sereno ed illuminato da un bel sole, parve incerto, e guardò sua cugina quasi volesse interrogarla. — Fareste meglio, credo, a portare l'ombrello se andate a Londra, – diss'ella con un tono che non ammetteva replica. – Il tempo può cambiare prima del vostro ritorno…. Quando tornò, egli era in uno stato di dolce agitazione: aveva fatto un acquisto. Raramente riusciva ad offrire in tempo un prezzo nelle vendite all'incanto, ma questa, volta l'aveva spuntata. — Sono delle «Vandas», – esclamò, – poi vi è un «Dendrobium», e qualche «Palaenophis». E mangiando la minestra osservava con dolce soddisfazione i suoi acquisti. Aveva posto i fiori sulla candida tovaglia, e narrava la loro istoria alla cugina, divagandosi e dimenticando il rimanente del pranzo. Era la sua abitudine, la sera, quando ritornava da Londra, di narrare minutamente tutto quello che gli era successo perdendosi nei particolari, e parlava per divertire la cugina e anche un po' sè stesso. — Lo dicevo che mi sarebbe successo qualcosa oggi! Ecco: ho comperato tutta questa roba! Fra questi fiori ve ne saranno, voi mi capite, ve ne saranno degli straordinari, ne sono certo. Ignoro come ciò possa essere, ma ne sono certo come se qualcuno me lo avesse detto; ve ne saranno degli straordinari! Questo qui, – ed indicava un «rizoma»nota 4 completamente rugoso, – non è classificato. Può essere un «Palaenophis», od altra cosa. È possibile che sia una nuova specie, od anche un nuovo generenota 5. È l'ultimo fiore che il povero Batten ha raccolto. — Non mi garba il suo aspetto, – disse la governante, – ha una forma ripugnante. — Per conto mio non ha neppure forma! — Osservate quei cordoncini, quelle zampe ripiegate che si distaccano da quel corpo! — Domani lo metterò in un vaso. — Ha l'aspetto d'un ragno che fa il morto. Wedderburn sorrise, ed incominciò ad esaminare la radice. — Non è certamente un bel campione: ma non si può mai fare un giudizio su questi fiori quando sono secchi. Può diventare un'orchidea bellissima. Domani sarò occupatissimo. Questa notte rifletterò; e domattina mi metterò all'opera. Figuratevi, – continuò a dire, – che hanno trovato il povero Batten, morto o moribondo, in una palude, non ne ricordo il nome, e precisamente con una di queste orchidee sotto il corpo. Egli era sofferente da parecchi giorni per febbre di malaria, e per la grande debolezza svenne. Quelle paludi sono assai malsane! Tutto il sangue di quel disgraziato fu succhiato fino all'ultima goccia dalle sanguisughe. Forse è stata la ricerca di questa pianta che gli costò la vita. Non posso pronosticarne niente di meglio! – In fine de' conti, gli uomini devono lavorare, anche quando le donne piangono, – sentenziò Wedderbrun. – È assai bizzarro andare a cercare la morte in una palude pestilenziale, lontano da tutte le comodità della vita! Assai bizzarro l'essere ammalato di febbre senza poter mangiare altro che del chinino, senz'altra compagnia che quella di orribili selvaggi. Dicono che gli indigeni delle isole Andaman sono esseri ributtanti, in ogni caso non avendo essi ricevuto educazione alcuna, difficilmente possono fare da infermieri! E tutto ciò per fornire l'Inghilterra d'orchidee! Non credo che la cosa riesca facile e comoda; ma vi sono degli uomini che ci prendono gusto al pericolo! Però bisogna convenire che quei selvaggi furono abbastanza civili per prendere cura delle collezioni di quel disgraziato, e rimetterle nelle mani di un suo collega, un ornitologo che faceva ritorno, poco dopo l'accaduto, dall'interno dell'isola. Ma non seppero dire il nome dell'orchidea, ed il peggio si è che l'avevano lasciata appassire. Ecco quello che reca a questa pianta un particolare e strano interesse. — Vale a dire che ciò la rende ributtante! Io avrei paura che queste piante portino la malaria! Ricordatevi che vi era un cadavere su questa brutta cosa! Io non ci avevo pensato ancora! Ed ora mi è impossibile d'ingoiare un boccone! — Ebbene, se volete, toglierò questi fiori di qui e li porrò nel vano della finestra. Li vedrò benissimo anche là…. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I giorni seguenti Winter li passò quasi interamente nel nel piccolo tepidario saturo di denso vapore. Tutta la sua attenzione fu concentrata sul carbone, sulla borraccina, infine su tutte le misteriose cure d'un allevatore di orchidee. Egli credevasi sempre alla vigilia di un giorno fecondo di avvenimenti meravigliosi. Ed allora ne avrebbe parlato, agli amici suoi, di questa nuova specie di orchidee! Malgrado le cure assidue e minuziose, molte «Vandas» e «Dendrobium» morirono; ma, la strana orchidea invece cominciò a dare segni di vita. Allora Wedderburn andò in estasi e distolse la governante dalla fabbricazione di frutta in conserva, per obbligarla ad osservare la strana pianta. — Questa è la gemma, – diss'egli, – e fra poco nasceranno delle foglioline. Queste piccole cosine che crescono qui, saranno radici aeree od avventizie. — Mi paiono delle piccole dita bianche, e non mi garbano affatto affatto! — E perchè non vi piacciono? — Non lo so spiegare. Ma paiono proprio delle dita che vogliano afferrarmi. Non si possono spiegare certe simpatie od antipatie. — Non posso affermarlo, ma non credo che vi sia altra specie d'orchidee che abbia radici aeree come questa. Può essere un'idea mia; ma osservate queste radici, esse hanno le estremità piatte, anzichè rotonde. — Non mi garbano affatto affatto, – ripose la governante rabbrividendo e volgendo altrove lo sguardo. – Sarà ridicolo da parte mia; ma davvero sono crucciata di vedervi intestato in quella cosaccia! Non posso fare a meno di pensare al cadavere! — Ma nessuno mi ha accertato che proprio questa pianta fosse rimasta sotto il cadavere! Era una semplice mia supposizione. La governante fece una spallucciata. — In ogni caso, – ripetè ancora, – a me non garba affatto affatto! Wedderburn parve un po' offeso per tale e tanta ripugnanza. Ma ciò non gli impedì di parlare a sua cugina delle orchidee in generale, e di questa e di quella in particolare, tutte le volte che gli capitò l'occasione o che ne ebbe il desiderio…. — Vi sono nelle orchidee delle cose assai strane, – incominciò egli a dire un giorno. – vi possono capitare delle improvvisate, alle quali siete lungi dal pensare. Voi sapete benissimo che Darwin studiò la loro riproduzione e che ha dimostrato essere la struttura del fiore ordinario atta a permettere alle farfalle il trasporto del polline da una pianta all'altra. Ebbene, io credo che vi sono delle specie che non si prestano a tale modo di fecondazione. Per esempio, alcune «Cypripediums» non possono essere fecondate da nessun insetto, e molte di esse furono trovate prive di seme. — Ma allora donde provengono le pianticelle? — Dai germogli e dai tubercoli, e da questi piccoli rampolli. Ciò si spiega facilmente. L'enigma sta nel sapere a che serve il fiore. Ora, molto probabilmente, la «mia orchidea» desta per tal cagione un interesse straordinario. Ho spesso avuto in mente di rinnovare le ricerche di Darwin; ma fino ad ora non ne ho avuto il tempo. Le foglie incominciano a svilupparsi. Ve ne prego, venite a vederle! Ma la governante dichiarò che il tepidario aveva una temperatura che le avrebbe cagionato dolori di capo. D'altronde aveva visto la pianta da poco tempo; e le radici avventizie, alcune delle quali avevano la lunghezza d'un piede, le incutevano terrore. Le parevano dei tentacoli avidi di afferrare la gente! E vedeva questi tentacoli crescere verso di lei con una rapidità prodigiosa. Ed aveva giurato a sè stessa di non mai più rivedere quella brutta pianta. Andasse Wedderburn ad ammirarne le foglie. E queste foglie erano di grossezza comune, ma di colore verde brillante, macchiate da puntolini rossi. Egli non aveva sentito parlare di foglie simili. La pianta dell'orchidea era stata collocata sopra una panca piuttosto bassa, fra il termometro ed il serbatoio dell'acqua calda, dal quale serbatoio sfuggiva, per una cannella, l'acqua goccia a goccia per impregnare d'umidità l'atmosfera del tepidario. E Wedderburn passava regolarmente ed interamente le sue giornate ad osservare i progressi della fioritura di quella strana pianta. Finalmente giunse il gran giorno. Appena Wedderburn entrò nel tepidario, si accorse che il fiore era sbocciato, benchè il grande «Palaenophis Lown» nascondesse colle sue foglie il nuovo favorito. Ed era perchè un odore nuovo, un soave profumo, penetrante, inebbriante, dominante tutti gli altri profumi, imbalsamava l'atmosfera di quella piccola casa di vetro ingombra di piante. Wedderburn rimase in estasi innanzi al nuovo prestigio: al posto dei bottoni verdi che quasi toccavano terra, vi erano tre grandi fiori, dai quali si sprigionava quel profumo così intenso. I fiori erano bianchi con strie di color rancio dorato sui petali; il pesante «labellum» era arrotolato in modo assai strano, e meravigliose tinte celesti e porporine si intrecciavano coll'oro. Wedderburn si accorse subito che tal genere di fiore era assolutamente nuovo. E quel profumo! Quel profumo insopportabile…. e quell'ambiente caldo! I fiori gli si sviluppavano sotto gli occhi! Egli volle osservare la temperatura, fece per avvicinarsi al termometro; ma improvvisamente vide vacillare gli oggetti circostanti. I mattoni del pavimento ballavano in tutte le direzioni, i fiori bianchi, le foglie verdi, il tepidario stesso, parevano fuggire, descrivendo una curva verso il cielo…. Alle quattro e mezzo, la cugina apparecchio il tè, secondo il solito; ma Wedderburn non si fece vedere. — È ancora in adorazione della sua orribile pianta, – pensò ella, ed aspettò qualche minuto… – Forse avrà l'orologio fermo, andrò a cercarlo. Si recò direttamente al tepidario, ed aprendo la porta lo chiamò. Non ebbe risposta, però s'accorse che l'atmosfera era pesante e satura d'un odore fortissimo; e vide per terra, fra i tubi dell'acqua calda, un corpo disteso. Rimase immobile e stupefatta: doveva essere lui certamente, disteso supino a terra, vicino alla strana orchidea. Le radici avventizie non si dondolavano più liberamente nell'aria a somiglianza di tentacoli; si erano intrecciate, e le loro estremità erano strettamente applicate al mento, al collo ed alle mani di Wedderburn. La governante in sulle prime non capì bene di che si trattasse: ma avvicinandosi tremante si accorse che al disotto dei tentacoli appoggiati alla guancia sgorgava un sottile filo di sangue. Diè un urlo e si precipitò su Wedderburn; provò a liberarlo da quelle strane e terribili sanguisughe; spezzando subito due tentacoli dai quali sgocciolò un succo rosso. L'odore opprimente del fiore incominciò a farle girare la testa, cercò di strappare le radici che ancora si avviticchiavano con forza alle carni del disgraziato; ma sentendosi venir meno, aprì precipitosamente la porta più vicina, e fuggì all'aperto. L'aria fresca la rianimò, e senza por tempo in mezzo afferrò un vaso di fiori e lo lanciò contro i vetri, all'estremità opposta del tepidario per provocare un riscontro. Rientrò quindi nel tepidario, presso Wedderburn che giaceva ancora avviticchiato da quelle strane e pur terribili ridici. Con uno sforzo disperato la povera donna trascinò fuori corpo e pianta insieme, e quando fu all'aria libera, in breve tempo potè liberare il disgraziato da quelle sanguisughe vegetali e gettare quella malaugurata pianta nel tepidario. Wedderburn era livido, ed aveva sul viso e sulle mani numerose e sanguinolenti piaghe di forma circolare. Il rumore dei vetri spezzati aveva fatto accorrere nel giardino un domestico, il quale, vedendo la governante colle mani macchiate di sangue vicino al corpo del padrone non poteva davvero credere ai suoi occhi, e gli balenò uno strano e terribile sospetto. — Portate subito dell'acqua, – gridò la donna, e queste parole rassicurarono totalmente il buon domestico. Quando tornò con l'acqua, la governante, colle lagrime agli occhi, asciugava il viso insanguinato del povero Wedderburn. — Che cos'è successo? – domandò quest'ultimo aprendo un po' gli occhi e richiudendoli subito. — Chiamate Anna, andate dal dottore Haddon, e ditegli di recarsi subito qui, – ordinò la governante al domestico. – In quanto a voi, – soggiunse, rivolgendosi a Wedderburn, – narrerò tutto, appena potrete udirmi. Dopo qualche minuto, Wedderburn aprì nuovamente gli occhi, ma pareva assai turbato e non poteva capire quello che gli era successo, e come mai fosse lì disteso in terra. — Siete svenuto nel tepidario! – gli disse allora sua cugina vedendo il turbamento del pover'uomo. — E la mia orchidea? — A quella ci penserò io! Wedderburn aveva perso gran copia di sangue; ma fortunatamente per lui, non aveva riportato altro malanno da quella strana avventura. Una tazza di brodo con un po' di «brandy» valsero a ristorarlo. Il dottore appena giunto ordinò che lo si trasportasse nel letto per maggior precauzione. Allora la governante narrò alla meglio al dottore Haddon quella incredibile storia. — Venite nel tepidario e vedrete, – diss'ella. L'aria fresca era penetrata dalla porta spalancata, e l'odore malsano era quasi scomparso. Molte delle radici aeree giacevano appassite sui mattoni chiazzati qua e là da goccie di sangue. Il fusto della pianta si era spezzato nella caduta, ed i fiori erano diventati scuri e molli sull'orlo dei petali. Il dottore si chinò; ma vide che una di quelle radici si muoveva debolmente e stimò più prudente l'uscire dal tepidario. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . All'indomani, la strana orchidea giaceva sempre al medesimo posto; ma era diventata nera e quasi in decomposizione. Il vento del mattino sbatteva di tanto in tanto le porte del tepidario, e tutta la collezione di Orchidee di Wedderburn era oramai sciupata, raggrinzita, gelata; ma Wedderburn era in piedi; guarito, raggiante, loquace e desideroso di narrare la sua strana avventura. Fine. nota 1 – Labellum, formazione labbriforme. Il petalo mediano diviso in tre lobi, che forma il labbro inferiore della corolla dell'orchidea. Margaret touts the book as a Godfather meets The Da Vinci Code but with a redemptive twist. I tout it as a book I couldn't put down!   Orazio Bordoni is a son of a construction magnate - but he wants nothing more than to be an artist. So, he leaves home and follows on a similar path as Caravaggio - a 16th century artist very much admired by Orazio. Before long, Orazio is caught up in slimy Vatican politics, the Sicilian mafia, and a lover with a powerful political father.   What starts out as a "job" turns into a test - one where he must prove his loyalty to the mafia. Will Orazio lose his family? His lover? His friends? His art? His life? The tale twists and turns, often leaving the reader breathless.   Margaret does an amazing job helping the reader experience the underbelly of Italy while exposing us to the world of art - all while keeping us guessing as to what will happen next. Since joining the museum in 1988, she has reinstalled the collections of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and 18th-century European painting and sculpture three times, and organized two major international exhibitions. In 2022, the museum will organize a major, international exhibition curated by Mann that examines the art of painting on stone, a practice that flourished in Europe—particularly Italy—in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 2015, the Association of Art Museum Curators and the American Academy in Rome awarded Mann the Samuel H. Kress Foundation AAMC Affiliated Fellowship in order to allow her to continue her research into painting on stone in Rome.——- Mann curated “Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi: Father and Daughter Painters in Baroque Italy,” which opened at Rome's Palazzo Venezia and later was seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Saint Louis Art Museum, as well as the 2012 exhibition “Federico Barocci: Renaissance Master,” which was presented at the Saint Louis Art Museum and the National Gallery, London. Ironically, I'm wearing blue-blocking glasses right now as I type on my computer since it's after dark and eye exposure to blue light at night compromises sleep. So, it didn't seem far-fetched at all that blocking sunlight from the eyes during the day could have negative effects either. I investigated and found the currently available answers to the question: Do sunglasses make you more likely to get a sunburn? I also included some other information that might be helpful to understand. If nothing else, it should give you something to discuss while you lay by the pool, on a boat, or on the beach this summer.
