Author Steve Thornton asks “Who really makes history”? In his new book, Radical Connecticut: People's History in the Constitution State, co-authored by Andy Piascik,  guest Steve Thornton tells the stories of everyday people and well-known figures whose work has often been obscured, denigrated, or dismissed. There are narratives of movements, strikes, popular organizations and people in Connecticut who changed the state and the country for the better. Unlike a traditional history that focuses on the actions of politicians, generals, business moguls and other elites, Radical Connecticut is about workers, the poor, people of color, women, artists and others who engaged in the never-ending struggle for justice and freedom.  In this episode, we'll hear more about unions and labor strikes in Connecticut history including Thornton's participation in the Colt Firearms strike of the 1980's.  Historian, activist, and union organizer, Thornton was designated a Connecticut History Gamechanger by Connecticut Explored magazine in 2022 for his bottom-up approach to Connecticut history. He authors the website The Shoeleather History Project which documents and explores progressive organizing from Hartford's grassroots. You can also hear more from Steve in our Grating the Nutmeg episode # 145. Welcome to Episode 60 of the Blue Light Leavers Podcast Today I'm talking to Jamie Stenton, who is a former police officer and now, Marketing Director of Lilac James, who are a Digital Marketing specialist agency. In this interview, we talked through Jamie's policing career and the roles, skills and experience he picked up in the way, and we also talk about the tipping point when he realised that the additional pressure, timescales, responsibilities and relative salary increase, really wasn't worth it, and there had to be easier ways. During this time, he was developing a family business alongside his day job, and the support he got through, Shifts to Success and Alexander Seery. We talk about the day in the life of the type of work that he actually does now, and we talk through the changes and benefits of being a business owner and getting some control back in his life. He helps signpost some courses and people to follow on Facebook if this is an area that interests you, and we also talk about the importance of investing in your own success and future. This episode is sponsored by the brilliant Motor Source Group, which, like Blue Light Leavers, is a very proud sponsor of the Emergency Services Football League. I've met CEO Steve Thornton a number of times now, I've interviewed him for the podcast and also met the team and been up to their head office and they're just a really lovely bunch of people who are genuinely doing the right thing and doing their bit to say thanks. Motor Source Group offer genuine new car discounts to serving and retired emergency services personnel, including Police, NHS, Fire and Rescue, and the Prison Service. Welcome to Episode 59 of the Blue Light Leavers Podcast Ian Grant is a former police officer who's now a Senior Lecturer at a very well-known and hugely respected University, having left school with no qualifications. He talks us through his police career, we talk about the conversations we had towards the end of his service and coming to terms with that transition, along with the interview processes that he went through for his first role, and how things have just exploded and expanded for him from that point. This is all with a backdrop of a really significant health condition, so this episode comes with a bit of a warning that it is quite graphic in places with regards to the type of medical condition he has. We also talk about some of the skills and behaviours required for the role, and he gives some amazing advice about what to do and how to plan a year or so before you leave, the importance of networking and how it's had a massive impact on his career success, post-policing. This episode is sponsored by the brilliant Motor Source Group, which, like Blue Light Leavers, is a very proud sponsor of the Emergency Services Football League. In the Summer 2022 issue of Connecticut Explored, author and historian Steve Thornton of the Shoeleather History Project brings us the story of the internationally-renown activist, actor, and singer Paul Robeson and his wife Eslanda, an anthropologist, author and activist in her own right. The Robeson's home from 1941 to 1953 in Enfield, Connecticut is on the Connecticut Freedom Trail as well as the National Register of Historic Places. The Hartford Courant reported on April 1, of 1941 that, “The stucco house is situated on two and a half acres of land. The property includes a recreational building which houses a bowling alley and an outdoor swimming pool… A purchase price of about $10,000 was indicated by the attached revenue stamp.” The next day the Courant reported, “Paul Robeson will move into his new home here, “The Beeches” on May 1… The luxurious house is in a state of disrepair but Mrs. Robeson has arranged with local workers to renovate the house and grounds…Built in 1903, the living room is richly paneled with a marble mantle… The grounds are shaded by many old trees, including several beeches on the broad lawns in front of the house.” What attracted the Robeson's to Enfield? Why did the FBI keep them under surveillance in Connecticut? And how did a Robeson concert at Hartford's Weaver High School in 1952 become a huge local controversy? Let's hear from Steve Thornton about the Robesons activism and life while living in Connecticut. The 2020-21 Elite League Season has been suspended. This came as little surprise to most given the uncertain times we live in, yet it still came as a massie disappointment to those of us so used to following the Belfast Giants across the Autumn and Winter months. A View from the Bridge reflects on the decision of the EIHL to halt preparations for the new term. Patrick, Simon, Davy and Joel are joined by Belfast Giants Coach, Adam Keefe and Head of Hockey Ops, Steve Thornton to look at what has happened, and what we can do to ensure the Giants prevail into 2021. This week on The Finger Guns Podcast the ENTIRE team is here as Rossko, Greg, Sean, Paul and Toby get our heads down with the weeks biggest gaming/nerd culture news and not only that, we have a guest! Joining us is Sperasoft's Steve Thornton who jumps on to talk his previous live at TT Games, his thoughts on Unreal Engine 5 along with his love for the design aesthetics in Doom Eternal and Sekiro, as well as lockdown living in St. Petersburg. We have an extended, fascinating chat with Steve which is well worth diving into. Our Trivia Challenge returns with Sean challenging us with a 3D Platformer quiz, can Toby get a point on the board after last weeks disastrous debut showing? Well, you'll have to listen I suppose. We also talk the obscene asking price of every little piece of Mortal Kombat 11 Kontent (heh) with Greg delivering a passionate retort to NetherRealms business practices. Are they treating the early adopters fairly? Should we really be paying over £100 for every piece of content? We discuss. Finally, well it's The Snyder Cut isn't it. It's actually real and our resident DC fanboy Paul has some thoughts on what it all could mean. Once, y'kno, once it's explained to him what on earth is going on because it's never quite a planet he's ever present upon. What other works of creative endeavour do we want sliced up and remade? It's a fun discusssion. There's a lot to love in this weeks bumper episode, along with thoughts on Maneater, Saints Row The Third Remastered, Forza Street, Rossko's further impressions of Google Stadia and more.
