Welcome to the 100th episode of Beauty is a Bitch!  It would seem dementia is on the rise, and that is a scary realization. The truth is, women have a greater risk of developing dementia during their lifetime. In fact, around twice as many women have Alzheimer's disease – the most common type of dementia – compared to men. The main reason for this greater risk is because women live longer than men, and old age is the biggest risk factor for this disease. However, other factors also play a role. Some of these risks can be mitigated, which begs the question, "What can we do for better brain health?" Health coach Susan Saunders, specializes in helping women over 50 reduce dementia risk and optimize brain health through science-backed habits. She is the author of three books on healthy aging and longevity, with her most recent being The Power Decade: How to Thrive After Menopause. Susan holds a high-level qualification as a dementia prevention coach under the guidance of neuroscientist Dr. Dale Bredesen, author of The End of Alzheimer's. She was among the first in the UK to qualify as a coach in his program. Susan has successfully coached hundreds of people globally, helping them build habits scientifically proven to reduce dementia risk. Please join Lauren and Susan as they dig deep into: the single most important thing we can do to look after our brains as we age; the six pillars of better brain health; why Susan started on this journey to better brain health; why we need to emphasize healthy habits to reduce our dementia risk; why more women than men get dementia; what happens to our brains during menopause; and what a coaching session looks like. In this episode of the podcast I welcome back author and health coach Susan Saunders - Susan's first appearance on the podcast back in November 2022 focused on preventing Alzheimer's disease and has been one of our most popular episodes.   Susan's latest book The Power Decade published soon after that and will be out in paperback on 8th June (link below). The book takes us through how to thrive after menopause, and focuses on the ‘window of opportunity' we have in, and soon after, menopause to take action to prevent the chronic diseases of aging – such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and dementia.    In countries where the average age of menopause is 51, and the average life expectancy is 83, we're potentially living half our adult lives in a post-menopausal state. The Power Decade explains the impacts of the menopause transition on our metabolic health, heart health, bone health, and brain health.    Susan talks about the ‘protective cloak' that our reproductive hormones wrap us in pre-menopause, and how the drop in those hormones impacts all areas of our health, helping us understand the changes that happen in the body and what we need to do to remain healthy. She quotes The Lancet as calling menopause “a cardiometabolic turning point for women” - so I ask her to explain more about cardiometabolic health and why it becomes so important to keep top of mind post-menopause.   Her book is peppered with interviews with postmenopausal women who are thriving, explaining what they have done to get there, providing a sense of hope and renewal, and showing us that post-menopause can be a positive time where we experience a ‘rebound' and renewed energy.    You can find Susan at www.susansaundershealth.com  and on Instagram  https://www.instagram.com/susansaundershealth/    The Power Decade:  https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-power-decade-how-to-thrive-after-menopause-susan-saunders/7644592?ean=9781472291615    If you enjoy the podcast and would like to help me keep it running (on a shoestring!) please consider buying me a ‘virtual coffee' at Ko-fi.com/middlingalong - or you can support me in a non-monetary way by sharing this episode, or writing a short review online!  If your workplace wants to become more ‘menopause friendly' then please let them know about the work I do at http://www.managingthemenopause.com  You can also find me over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/middlingalong_podcast/ and https://www.instagram.com/managingthemenopause   Join our newsletter, The Messy Middle, for fortnightly(ish) goodness into your Inbox: https://dashboard.mailerlite.com/forms/323784/90772270045202190/share  We're delighted to be listed as one of the Top 25 podcasts for midlife and menopause here: https://www.lattelounge.co.uk/podcasts-about-the-menopause/

Join me this time as I chat to author and health coach Susan Saunders as we talk about aging well and what we can do to reduce our chances of developing Alzheimer's Disease.   Susan's determination to age well grew out of her personal story. She spent 12 years caring for her mum, who had severe dementia. When her mum was diagnosed, Susan was 36 years old with a toddler, a new-born and a full-time job. Her world was turned upside down – not only was she mum, wife, and boss, she was now a carer too. What made this even harder to bear was that, as a teenager, she'd watched her mum going through the same thing with her mother.    Susan started researching everything she could about aging well. That led her to start The Age-Well Project blog and then a book of the same name, written with her friend Annabel Streets, plus a follow up book The Age Well Plan. Susan is only the third person in the UK to qualify as a coach with neuroscientist Dr Dale Bredesen, author of The End of Alzheimer's, and she now helps women across the world reduce their dementia risk through her coaching programmes.    We talk about the influence of the APOE4 gene - which apparently 20% of the population carries - and how the impact of lifestyle is considerably more important to our risks of developing Alzheimer's than our genetic make up.    Susan's next book is on post-menopausal health (due out summer 2023) and she talks us through the ‘window of opportunity' post-menopause to take action to prevent the chronic diseases of aging - such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and dementia.    One new piece of information I learned in our interview was that our bones are constantly being remodelled and renewed - and that oestrogen and progesterone are critical to driving this process - so when our levels of these hormones drop away, our bone health can dramatically deteriorate if we don't take action to counteract those changes. You can find Susan at https://susansaundershealth.com and more info on her books at https://agewellproject.com/our-book/ or find her at https://www.instagram.com/susansaundershealth and https://www.instagram.com/agewellproject    Don't forget to follow us over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/middlingalong_podcast/ or find out more/listen to past episodes/subscribe to the newsletter at https://middlingalong.com   It would mean so much if you'd subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts to share the love! He tells us his three pillars for staying mentally and physically happy and healthy in retirement.  To get some expert ideas and financially savvy suggestions, Angellica's chatting with Legal & General's Emma Byron, Managing Director of Retirement Solutions, as well as health coach Susan Saunders.  Susan's on a mission to help people ‘age well', so whether you want to fund an active hobby or give your brain a workout, this episode is sure to inspire you to find your own unique version of a happy retirement.    POINTS OF INTEREST & FEATURED LINKS:  Read more on the topic from Legal & General here: https://www.legalandgeneral.com/retirement/rewirement/healthy-body-healthy-mind Find out more about retirement planning from Legal & General https://www.legalandgeneral.com/retirement You can find more information from Susan Saunders here: https://susansaundershealth.com  Susan's book ‘The Age-Well Project'  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Age-Well-Plan-Susan-Saunders/dp/0349425531   The views and thoughts expressed on this podcast are those of the individuals involved and do not necessarily represent those of Legal & General. Ageing is something that inevitably starts to preoccupy us in midlife, because we all want to be as fit and well as possible as we grow older, and let's be honest, we'd like to keep looking good too. As my latest guest Susan Saunders remarks, “We all know people who are ageing at different rates. Once you get to midlife, everyone starts to age in a very different way – a small part of that is genetic but a lot of it is down to lifestyle.”  Susan has made it her business to compile the very latest research on cellular ageing and some of things she flags up are a real eye-opener in this fascinating discussion on how to age well.Susan Saunders is a TV producer, author and health coach. She's spent the last decade researching how to live a longer healthier, happier life and truly believes that we can change the way we age. The fruits of this research led to her co-authoring The Age-Well Project, a brilliant book on the science of ageing and she's just published her new book The Age-Well Plan, which is full of simple strategies to apply the science in our everyday lives and help us all to lead a longer, healthier, happier life. This episode is packed with fascinating information about cellular ageing and how we can slow it down to be the best possible version of ourselves as we move through midlife and into old age.  Susan is a fount of interesting information about how we can do some very simple things to get results quite quickly. The investment you make into your health now will reap benefits both immediately and in later life, so tune in to find out how you can lay the cornerstones for optimum health and happiness. If you've enjoyed this episode please leave a 5-star rating and a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts as it helps to spread the word, so that new listeners can find the show. I’ve been talking about embracing uncertainty and change, finding ways to THRIVE within it and on this episode I’m speaking with Susan Saunders about her book the Age-Well project Easy Ways to a Longer, Healthier and Happier Life and specifically great tips and actions for building resilience and strength. Susan Saunders is co-author with Annabel Streets and together they are on a mission to encourage us all to plan ahead to be really healthy as we get older. I’ve just had a birthday so this is also on my mind but I also KNOW that how we look after ourselves, our bodies, our minds has a huge impact on our ability to be resilient, confident and strong. These are all super important and how we experience getting older and nurturing health and happiness are OUR choice - WE are responsible for our future health and our health - mentally and physically right now. Susan and I discuss what rising up means to her, and lots of practical ideas and tips for building and nurturing resilience. This week we welcome Annabel Streets and Susan Saunders to the show. Annabel and Susan have compiled almost 100 short cuts to health in mid and later life, including: how, when and what to eat; the supplements worth taking; when, where and how to exercise; the most useful medical tests; how to avoid health-threatening chemicals; the best methods for keeping the brain sharp; and how to sleep better. The Age-Well Project is an essential handbook for making the second half of your life happy, healthy and disease-free. Questions we ask in this episode: Tell us about ‘The Four Cornerstones of Healthy Ageing’ Do you prescribe to any particular diet or way of eating?  How important is community for overall well being?  https://180nutrition.com.au/shop/ This week, I'm excited to welcome Annabelle Streets and Susan Saunders, who are founders of the Age Well Project. Between them, both Annabelle and Susan witnessed family members succumb to heart disease, cancer, dementia and diabetes and wanted to do everything they could do to reduce their risk of suffering the same fate. So, for the last five years, they've immersed themselves in the latest medical studies, radically overhauled their own lives and documented their findings via a blog. And now a book. In this episode we discussed the health misconceptions that mainstream media lead us to believe and learn about the four cornerstones of healthy aging that holds the key to truly optimizing our own health. Over to Annabelle and Susan. Hey guys, this is Stu from one 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome Annabelle streets and Susan Saunders to the podcast. Ladies, good morning. How are you? Susan 01:41 Really good. Annabelle 01:41 Good morning Stewart. Susan 01:43 Good morning from London. Stu 01:44 All the way from London way. Hopefully you've got a nice day. We are just coming to an end over here in Australia. So, but I can tell you that Friday's been a good day, so don't despair. It's all good. Annabelle 01:54 Good, good. We are hoping for a good Friday ahead of us. Susan 01:59 Yeah, this is a good start to the day. Stu 01:59 So, first up, thank you so much for joining me today. I've got loads and loads of questions that I want to fire at you as well. But for all of those people, our listeners, that are not familiar with you guys, your work, books, things like that, I just wondered if you could share a little bit about yourselves please. Annabelle 02:21 Yes. Well we, we met about 10 years ago outside the school where we had two daughters and we started talking and we discovered fairly early on that we both had very similar backgrounds in terms of the families that we came from and the, the diseases that we believed were in our genes. And a, and we sort of cemented our early friendship over conversations about subjects like dementia and Alzheimer's and all those sorts of things. And then later on we decided to start blogging. We were both working, we had young children, we were very, very busy and we were finding it quite hard to adopt sort of healthy lifestyle practices into our own lives because we were, we're juggling so many, so many balls.
