We talk about fitness. We talk about mindset. But what if the missing piece to movement, resilience and health is something we barely think about?Interoception, the sense of what's happening inside our bodies, shapes how we think, feel and move. It's why gut feelings exist. It's why chronic pain can persist even when injuries heal. It's why some people can read a room before a word is spoken. In the final episode of the 4th season of the ‘Make Movement Matter' podcast, I'm joined once again by my first ever podcast guest, science journalist Caroline Williams to talk about her fascinating new book, ‘Inner Sense: How the new science of interoception can transform your health". We explore the hidden power of interoception and how tuning into your internal signals can change everything from movement to mental health. We talk about vibrating pills (yes, really), flotation tanks, gut-brain science and how elite professionals use body awareness as their secret weapon. This episode may make you rethink everything you thought you knew about ‘listening to your body.'To find out more about today's guest and for the full show notes, visit:The Make Movement Matter PodcastIf you enjoy this podcast, please press Follow and Rate and Review. Why are kids moving less than ever before? It's easy to blame screens or modern life, but the reality is far more complex. Schools aren't always prioritising PE, play spaces are disappearing and fear of failure is stopping many young people from even trying. When movement becomes a chore instead of something fun, kids opt out, and that can shape their relationship with exercise for life.So how do we change the story? Ajaye Hunn-Phillips, co-founder of The Project PT, is passionate about making movement matter, having first-hand knowledge of the barriers young people face and what actually works to help them build confidence and joy in moving. If you care about making movement more inclusive and enjoyable for kids, to last a lifetime, this is a conversation you don't want to miss.To find out more about today's guest and for the full show notes, visit:The Make Movement Matter PodcastIf you enjoy this podcast, please press Follow and Rate and Review. How long can you keep running? At 67, Sir Christopher Ball had never been a runner. A doctor told him he was slightly overweight and needed more exercise, so he started jogging. That decision led to 7 marathons in 7 days, a world record for 10 marathons in 10 days at 72, and the creation of the Brathay 10in10 Challenge - all proving movement really has no age limit. Now, at 90, he's still running and planning his 100th birthday race. In this episode, we talk about mindset, movement and why ageing should be an adventure - not a decline. “Age should be an adventure. It's an adventure like going into a jungle. It is quite dangerous. And you never know what's going to leap out from behind the next tree. But approach it as one of the great adventures of life - positively.”Sir Christopher Ball's view on the world is truly inspiring and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this conversation and you cannot fail to either. To find out more about today's guest and for the full show notes, visit:The Make Movement Matter PodcastIf you enjoy this podcast, please press Follow and Rate and Review. Can you reverse ageing? At 39, Leslie Kenny was diagnosed with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto's, told her health would only decline, and given no real solutions beyond medication. But instead of accepting that fate, she turned to lifestyle medicine, movement and cellular renewal, and now, at 59, her biological age is just 21 and she is thriving! In this episode, Leslie, founder of Oxford Healthspan and co-founder of the Oxford Longevity Project, a non-profit educational organisation, shares how she put her autoimmune conditions into remission, the science behind autophagy and inflammation, and why movement is key to longevity. Who knew the power a mere banana could have on your wellbeing! However this is not a discussion about nutrition. Instead, it's about encouraging us to see past the ‘movement metrics' we can so easily get caught up in, and helping us look inward to notice how moving, and particularly moving together, makes us feel in our bodies and minds and therefore benefits our lives. Elaine Hart is the self-named ‘Chief Banana Officer' of ‘Power' - an experience she set up in order to share her love of spinning, but that grew to include running, walking and now the wonderful system of Tai Chi, taught by the ‘Banana Master of Yin', Becky Yeoman. In this conversation we talk about how Power came about, why they chose to use bananas as a tool to help people nourish themselves through movement and community, and the brilliantly inclusive experiences they've created. You're sure to see bananas in a different light from this day forward! If you enjoy this podcast, please support the show by pressing Follow & giving a Rating. Many movement systems which were practised many centuries ago are still used today. To stand the test of time, they must be beneficial. One that caught my eye a few years ago, when I was looking at ways to move that would nourish my body, rather than tax it and put stress on it, was Qigong. Annabel Deans was looking for the same reasons during lockdown and now loves teaching this incredible system. In this episode, Annabel tells us all about this transformative practice, its roots in ancient Chinese medicine and how it integrates mindful movement, breathwork, and meditation. She passionately describes how it not only enhances physical well-being but also offers deep emotional release. If you've heard of Qigong, but wondered what it was all about, what you do during a session and whether it would be beneficial for you, Annabel answers all of these questions and more. In this episode, I'm talking to author and health coach Susan Saunders who shares her own experience with dementia and its impact on her family. After navigating this incredibly challenging phase in her life (and having witnessed her mother go through the same experience with Susan's grandmother) she became determined to look for ways she could help herself try to prevent dementia. Susan then went on to share her knowledge with individuals through her coaching and with a wider audience through her books, to help us understand how important it is to think about our lifestyle choices now, particularly for women around the time of menopause. The conversation focuses on mitigating dementia risk through lifestyle changes, and as always, offers practical strategies to try to reduce dementia risk and empower you to take control of your cognitive well-being. I learned so much in this episode with Leah Levitan about a system in the body I knew very little about; the lymphatic system, perhaps the unsung hero of our bodies. Leah made a great case for the crucial role the lymphatic system plays which can often be overshadowed by the better known cardiovascular system, despite their close connection. You'll learn to recognise signs of poor lymphatic function, discover how simple, gentle movements can keep your lymphatic system flowing. Leah shares her passion for lymphatic work and gives us practical tips, including morning routines that jumpstart lymphatic activity. We discussed the role of movement, fluid intake, sleep, dry brushing and much more and ended up talking about an important area for women about why allowing your breasts to move freely can enhance lymphatic health. Get ready for an engaging discussion packed with relatable insights and easy-to-follow advice to help you support your lymphatic system and improve your well-being! For the start of Season 3, I invited Jess Meredith, a neuro-diversity expert, to discuss the essential role of movement in our workplaces and schools. Jess talks and leads workshops about neuro-inclusivity and helping everyone to look at the environments they spend time in and think about changes that can be made to suit the needs of everyone. Jess shares tools and ways of interacting that help people who are neurodivergent feel safe, concentrate better and meet their bodies needs. We discussed how most of these needs can be met with interventions that would in fact benefit everyone and we shared ideas for the future of educational and work environments that benefit all. We discuss the importance of challenging social norms that are restricting individual's movement needs and emphasise the importance of normalising movement for everyone to improve productivity, learning, and overall well-being. How often do you get to hear the pearls of wisdom that someone who's been on the planet for 103 years can share. Not often! In the last interview style podcast of Season 2, I had the massive honour of speaking with the wonderful Dr. Gladys McGarey, who is no less than 103! Having read her inspiring book, ‘The Well-Lived Life' it was brilliant to be able to delve into the significance of movement and her perspectives for a fulfilling life. In this lovely conversation full of anecdotes, we talked about the feeling of being stuck and identifying the root of this blockage. Dr. Gladys introduced me to her 5 L's for a well-lived life: life, love, laughter, labour and listening. The conversation covered the power of joy, the pitfalls of comparison, and the choice in responding to fear, underscoring the value of listening, caring for others and ourselves. Dr Gladys shared her wise words about acceptance to alleviate pain and enhance well-being, her concept of ageing into health, and the importance of finding purpose. Sharing lots of her personal experiences, she emphasised that there is a choice to ‘be glad' and the importance of spreading joy. Trigger Warning: This episode discuss cancer diagnosis, treatment and more in detail. Please take care of yourself, and hit pause at any stage and if now isn't the right time to listen, please to feel free to come back at a better time for you or those around you. After seeing images on Instagram of Louise Butcher crossing the line of the London Marathon with such pride, I realised what I was seeing was a truly incredible story. Delving deeper into Louise's story on her vlog on Instagram, I was taken by how positive she is, despite having lived through one of the hardest experiences life can throw at you. In today's episode of the @makemovementmatterpodcast Louise tells us about the rollercoaster that has been the last few years of her life. She candidly shares her experience of living with health anxiety and then being diagnosed with lobular breast cancer. Having running in her life wasn't just a physical activity, it became a lifeline for managing her mental health and she is now using it as a way to break records to break down barriers with her Guinness World Record as 'the fastest marathon with a double mastectomy'. Challenging societal stigmas surrounding breast cancer and life after mastectomy, Louise wants to start important conversations to bring greater awareness and I respect her immensely. I didn't realise that the way our feet move; the space we give the toes to splay, the importance of stimulation by varied surfaces, the level of movement in and the alignment of our big toes and more, can hugely affect the way our entire body moves…until I became injured and was searching for anything that might help me get out of pain. However, I was aware that when I wore narrow or heeled shoes, I was in pain both during wearing them and afterwards, and as so many other people felt the same, I just accepted it as ‘normal'! Looking back I'm amazed I did. It's a bit like wearing clothes that are so tight you struggle to breathe and move and yet, you just do it (I could go on about that too, but that's for another episode)! Since being a barefoot convert about 7 years ago, knowing how much better my feet feel and how much these natural shoes helped decrease my pain and help my movement, I've been following some great accounts on Instagram. One of these was forward thinking @anybryant_podiatrist, so I was thrilled when he agreed to give me some time, all the way from Melbourne, Australia. In this hugely informative conversation we talk about Andy's story with foot problems, training in podiatry at University and how his journey with foot health and the way he views treatment for the feet has changed since those early days. Packed with lots of practical tips, you will be sure to view your own foot function differently by the end of this episode. It's also a must listen if you're suffering with foot pain, including problems like bunions and plantar fasciitis, as Andy offers alternative approaches to standard treatment and prevention. Andy also highlights the significance of foot strength and exercises in maintaining foot health and recommends resources for finding barefoot shoes and practitioners who promote natural foot function. In a change to the normal format, today I'm going solo to talk to you about ageing. Why? Because I turned 50 yesterday! Woop woop! The move into a new decade affects everyone differently, as does the ageing process and yet we all have quite set thoughts on how we see the ageing process, particularly with regards to our ability to keep moving and what we expect of ourselves and others at each age. In this episode, I reflect on the impact ageing has on movement and physical activity. I share a personal experience which shaped my thinking about my own future movement choices as well as some of my own insights to encourage you to consider your mindset, expectations, and goals related to movement as you age. I talk about the importance of positive thinking, small changes, and the value of movement in maintaining independence and vitality. I also talk about the influence of role models in shaping our perspective on movement as we age and end with 5 questions that may help you to have a think about exactly what ageing means to you. Navigating this part of life myself, I know how important it is to be open and discuss the importance of movement through what can be a turbulent and confusing time. I really enjoyed talking to Dr. Katie Hilton and Dr. Laura Clark who founded The Lifestyle Health Clinic to help midlife women with their health and well-being during perimenopause and menopause; giving women time to really understand what is happening by looking at their whole lifestyle to help unlock how wellbeing can look for them. In this conversation, we discussed the multifaceted benefits of regular exercise, and focussed on empowering women to prioritise their own health and well-being, by recognising the importance of self-care, as well as always seeking support. We looked at practical strategies such as habit stacking and integrating movement into daily routines to help make sustainable lifestyle changes. We also covered the power of social connection in fostering overall health and the significance of building supportive networks. I know that without the support and openness of discussion with my friends through this time of life, it would have been a lot more difficult. The message we convey is that feeling suboptimal is not acceptable, and women should strive for optimal health and well-being by embracing movement, seeking help, and prioritising self-care during the phases of perimenopause, menopause and beyond. Getting outdoors, meeting and moving in a wide range of ways, with a wide range of people and learning about yourself in the process, is a really special combination. I've had the pleasure of knowing this week's podcast guests; Gill Erskine & Andrew Telfer, for a while now. I've even been fortunate enough to experience some of their magic, at a Wildstrong certification weekend. I came away having had my knowledge challenged, movement and coaching skills improved and having had warm conversations and made lovely connections. I wished there was a Wildstrong nearer me! Gill & Andrew are a great combination, as they have different backgrounds, giving them different perspectives and I managed to get a little of Andrew's wisdom before technical difficulties, sadly, got in the way. In the conversation we explored the barriers people have about moving outdoors, as well as the benefits of being in nature. We look at the challenge of incorporating outdoor time into daily life, the role a community can have in bringing social support through outdoor activities. Gill and I discussed the benefits of intergenerational movement and the importance of play in adult fitness as well as the impact of movement on ageing and the role of genetics and lifestyle on mobility. We touch on fear of movement and the need for permission to explore and be curious. If you enjoy this podcast, please support the show by pressing Follow & giving a Rating. Playing is such an innate part of growing up that brings so many more benefits than we realise, so what stops us playing as adults? I hadn't even thought of what play meant to me until I started searching for a way of moving that I knew I could keep doing after injury for life. Speaking to Darryl Edwards, founder of the Primal Play Method, I wanted to find out how he found play again and particularly why he feels it's such an important missing part of our movement lives. I really enjoyed this free flowing discussion about a topic that many may not have even thought of or certainly thought about in relation to the way they move. We explore the definition, the societal pressure for adults to play less. The importance of recognizing and appreciating play in everyday activities, as well as the myriad benefits for our health. We discussed Darryl's personal journey from a sedentary lifestyle to embracing movement and play before moving on to thinking about the balance between technological advancement and physical movement and its evolutionary impact. We look at the importance of finding joy and playfulness in movement, the concept of gamification and creating a sense of excitement and engagement in physical activity, and as is regularly encouraged about making small changes to incorporate more physical activity into their lives. On her Instagram page, Lucy Butler decided to share her passion for gardening that has helped her so much with her struggles with her mental health. In so doing, she gives hope to many and gains a community herself. The topic of this year's Mental Health Awareness week is ‘Movement: Moving more for our mental health'. When Lucy reached out to me, I knew this was the perfect topic as it has such wide-ranging benefits for both our physical and mental health as well as being accessible for many. In our warm chat, Lucy is open about her personal journey; using gardening to navigate through tough times. Her passion comes across clearly and I was particularly inspired by Lucy describing the way to garden mindfully, which also has lessons for the rest of life. Our conversation has lots of practical tips about how to get involved in community gardening, volunteering, and the deep sense of fulfillment that comes with nurturing green spaces. Whether you're a novice or a gardening aficionado, there are lots of useful takeaways for everyone, from starting small to embracing the inevitable failures along the way. In the second episode of season 2, I have a conversation that resonated very strongly with my own experience of pain and recovery. Samphire Hayes reached out to me about her story and I replied immediately. We share a story of chronic pain and of having to search for why our bodies were reacting that way. Our solutions were similar in terms of adopting a natural movement lifestyle and Samphire went even further to uncover her own story, by studying and adopting new practises she had never heard of before. Like myself, she has now chosen to use her learning and insight to help others. This conversation explores the experience of living with chronic pain and the journey towards building strength and finding hope. We talked about the link between chronic pain and trauma, as well as the impact of chronic pain on mental health. We cover the importance of self-advocacy, the power of small movements, breathwork and mindfulness and more, and the key moment when Samphire chose to ‘ditch the sofa' that had been her prison. It's the final episode of the 1st season of ‘Make Movement Matter'! For the finale, I was grateful to be joined by my dear friend, mentor and fellow small business owner; Jane Tarrant. With incredible passion about her subject, you will undoubtedly be inspired and energised by this conversation. Jane clearly conveys the importance of learning how to breathe well for optimal health, something she found out she desperately needed, through personal experience, having struggled to feel like she was breathing normally since her childhood. Retraining as a breathing coach its her mission to educate as many people as she can to help others become aware of something that can help them live an often markedly better life. In this conversation we talk about the difference between breathwork and breathing retraining, why the body benefits from healthy breathing habits and some surprising symptoms that can occur when when they are neglected. We cover the role of posture for breathing, how it affects movement and vice versa and so much more. I am always inspired by Jane and hope some of her positive energy will inspire you to think more about the way you breathe and how it could be affecting your life. So often, people take a path in life due to significant experiences that change their trajectory. Caz Hitchcock is one such person. Her career as a self-proclaimed, ‘human movement expert' has been shaped by her own personal experience of multiple surgeries at an early age. In this episode focussing on the less-explored subject of scar tissue, I asked Caz to inform us about the specifics; what scar tissue is and its role in the body. We went on to analyse how it affects the body immediately after injury or surgery, as well as the evolving nature of scar tissue over time. As ever, when things happen to the body, there's always as significant an impact on the mind in order to cope with these experiences. We discuss the importance of a collaborative, holistic approach that addresses the interconnectedness of mind and body. This episode offers practical insights, from assessing scar tissue issues to self-massage techniques for enhanced mobility. It advocates for proactive engagement in one's healing journey, fostering a sense of empowerment, curiosity, and mindful recovery. Looking at the photos and videos of the underwater world that Katie shares online never fail to put a smile on my face. The sheer beauty of the underwater environment that so few of us visit regularly is breathtaking and often looks like a tropical sea, not just off the coast of Cornwall! Having lived near the coast when she was growing up, she forged an early connection with the sea, encouraged by her father. As with so many of us, she lost touch with her childhood past-times and little did she know that it would become her saviour when she needed it most in life. Katie is full of energy and positivity, and her passion for the underwater world is so strong you might think she's been immersed in it and studying it all her life. Sometimes, purpose can show itself after the toughest of experiences and the story of Katie's experience and most importantly how she resurfaced are inspiring and moving, so much so that they even made a film about her! How do you remember your education? Was there much or any ‘green space' and, if you were lucky enough to have some, was learning in it, part of your school's timetable? Some of my fondest memories as a young child were exploring, playing with moss, old walls, water and building things in forests. But this was always outside the school setting. My guest today, Bianca Hagen, remembered being frustrated in school when she had to sit still and listen for long periods. So, when she had her own children, she decided their education had to incorporate movement, nature and play to do her best to ensure they would thrive into resilient, happy, confident adults. This journey led her to choose a life path, not only for her own children, but also sharing her knowledge with others', when she set up a Forest School in Virginia. Whether you have young children, are a caregiver or grandparent, or even just reflecting on how movement made you feel as a child and wanting to find some of that joy again, Bianca talks about how important both nature and movement are in everyone's lives through the lens of childhood. I hope this episode challenges your thoughts on traditional education and I'd love to hear your thoughts. If you enjoy this podcast, please support the show by pressing Follow & giving a Rating. You might be forgiven, when you look at today's guest's Instagram grid, for thinking she has superhuman strength and is obviously one of those lucky people who was born as a talented sports person. However, that couldn't be further from the truth! Shelby Copeland is truly tenacious and having had to overcome multiple hurdles, she is a shining example of what hard work, consistency, but particularly knowing your own body and working in tune with it, can do. Have you heard of ‘Lifestyle medicine'? It's a concept that I believe in whole-heartedly, and is gaining traction in the world of wellbeing. However its full potential is still less recognised by those who put less priority on their wellbeing. Charlotte Marriott, a Consultant NHS Psychiatrist specialising in Neuroscience as well as a Certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician gives us a really clear explanation of what lifestyle medicine is all about, and our conversation includes the impact of movement (of course!) on mental health and the physiological mechanisms behind it. We discuss the all-important, but often underestimated mind-body connection, with a focus on the interconnectedness of physical and mental health. Our conversation also delves into the role of movement in improving overall well-being and the challenges of promoting regular movement in a sedentary society. This is a positive conversation with a doctor who believes in looking at the big picture when looking at our health and I loved discussing this holistic point of view and hope you enjoy it too! Fear is an innate survival instinct that is in fact essential for our well-being. Early experiences and societal norms shape our perception of fear. My guest today, Julie Angel was invited to challenge her own fears on the other side of her camera, by trying out the parkour skills she had been filming. She soon realised it was helping her to confront and overcome her fears by reimagining their environment and developing physical and mental strength. In this conversation we discuss the part emotional has to play in movement; how fear can impact our ability to explore and connect with our own bodies and conversely how emotions such as fear, excitement, and joy are all part of our experience to be embraced. Julie shares her insights on how to analyse and work with fear, including setting small goals, and celebrating effort, the role of supportive partners and the power of visualisation. I hope you enjoy this in depth conversation, with the main takeaway being the importance of making friends with fear and to embrace your journey of self-discovery through movement. Ever since I heard about ‘The Blue Tits' cold water dipping community, I loved (the brilliant name!), the philosophy, its inclusivity and focus on community but mostly how much it centres on helping people to move forward, gently pushing themselves towards doing something that can be life-changing when it's often needed most. Chatting with Sian Richardson, its founder, was a great conversation as her enthusiasm and encouragement of everyone is clear throughout and is obviously the reason a meeting of a few like-minded souls on a beach in Wales became a global community. I enjoyed istening to her own story about overcoming depression and finding solace in movement, particularly running and swimming. Joining a community such as she (almost mistakenly) created, can have a transformative power on our lives and I hope listening inspires you to move in a direction you want to take perhaps by sharing the experience with a friend. About today's guest: Sian Richardon founded The Bluetits Chill Swimmers in the winter of 2014 in the Pembrokeshire sea. There are now over 120,000 members all around the world. The community's values are fun, trust, inclusivity and to ‘challenge our limits together'. You can start your own ‘flock' by visiting the website below and starting your own Bluetits community. A truly inspiring woman, Jo Moseley shares her journey with me about how finding a new type of movement played a pivotal role in changing her life direction and helped her overcome sadness. We discuss the catalysts that led her to embrace stand-up paddle boarding, including perimenopause and personal loss. Jo talks about the paddleboarding challenges she set herself, including a coast-to-coast journey and fundraising efforts. She emphasises the transformative power of movement on mental health and finding joy in the small things, as well as the support she received from friends and family. In our conversation, Jo also shares her passion for beach cleans and the positive impact they have on the environment and personal well-being. She emphasizes the sense of agency and purpose that comes from making a difference, meeting others, and being part of a community. Jo is a truly relatable person who set challenges to move herself forward and in so doing, made a hugely positive change in her life. About this week's guest: Jo Moseley is a 59 year old single Mum of two grown up sons from in Yorkshire. After a difficult perimenopause that left her crying in supermarket aisles and the grief of losing her Mum, Jo rowed a million metres and marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support in her memory in 2014. In 2016 she started paddleboarding having injured her knee earlier that year. She knew immediately it was something very special and for the first time in months she “felt like a warrior not a worrier.” Three years later Jo became the first woman to paddleboard 162 miles coast to coast fundraising and picking up litter. A film about that challenge called Brave Enough - A Journey Home to Joy has been screened to a great reception online and at prestigious adventure festivals, which is available to rent or buy. Her first book SUP Great Britain (as above) was published by Vertebrate Publishing in June 2022 and was the first GB guide dedicated to paddleboarding. It soon became a bestseller. As a result she was invited to write a book about paddleboarding in the Lake District which will be published in spring 2024. Jo is currently setting herself a #FeelGoodJoy challenge to do a Headstand a Day until she's 60 - which will be December 2024! I really enjoyed chatting with self-confessed ‘movement/mind geek', journalist, author and editor Caroline Williams. We discuss the connection between movement and the mind, highlighting the physical and mental benefits of exercise. Caroline explains how movement affects brain function and the importance of incorporating movement into daily life, the impact of sedentarism on the brain and the role of movement in preventing cognitive decline and mental diseases. We talked about the relationship between movement and confidence, as well as the positive effects of movements that emphasise bonding and synchronicity. Caroline provides some fascinating examples from her research for her highly successful book, ‘Move! The new science of body over mind'. Caroline's ability to make the science easily digestible to the non-scientist and her sense of fun, make her work hugely enjoyable and accessible. About this week's guest: Caroline Williams is a science journalist, editor and author based in the UK. She is a consultant and regular contributor to New Scientist magazine, covering neuroscience, health and nature-based stories. Her work has also appeared in the Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph, BBC Future, BBC Earth and the Boston Globe, among others. She is the author of two books: Move! and Override, and is the editor of two of New Scientist's Instant Expert Guides: How Your Brain Works: Inside the most complicated object in the known universe and Your Conscious Mind: Unravelling the greatest mystery of the human brain. She also edited New Scientist's Essential Guide to the Brain. Caroline has spent the past few years researching how body movements can dramatically change the way we think and feel, visiting scientists in their labs all over the world and meeting expert movers, from yoga gurus to stuntmen and from dancers to ultra-marathon runners. She gets her own movement fix from yoga, paddle-boarding, mountain biking and walking her New Zealand sheepdog cross, Jango.
