Today we are going to be talking about “Finding Your Place in God's Story Through the Biblical Stories of Women in Jesus' Lineage.”  Finding your place in God's story, thankfully, isn't about doing more or having it all together—it's about resting in God's promises and seeking his wisdom to live faithfully wherever we are. Our guest today, Teresa Swanstrom Anderson, creator of the Get Wisdom Bible Studies, is here to focus specifically on her Bible study of the women in Jesus' lineage to demonstrate to us that God is speaking into our stories through the complicated lives of five ordinary, imperfect, yet very courageous women connected to Jesus through his lineage.Bible Study: Finding Your Place in God's StoryPodcast: Living LighterWebsite: heyitsteresa.comIG: teresa.swanstrom.andersonBible: NIVHighlightersFavorite App: Blue Letter Bible0:00 - Intro1:27 - Ad Break3:15 - Meet Teresa Swanstrom Anderson 4:22 - What inspired you to focus on Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary, the women in Jesus' lineage?9:39 - How do the women of the Bible show a far different, truer vision of a faithful life?15:09 - Motherhood is definitely a central part in women's lives. My guest this week is Teresa Swanstrom Anderson, an author, speaker, podcast host, Bible teacher and entrepreneur. She is obsessed with the concept of living lighter, while helping overwhelmed women learn how to slow down with Scripture as well as with life. Teresa lives with her husband and six children and has written more than four Bible studies. Today we're talking all about parenting, and it went in a direction I wasn't expecting. 2:45 – Teresa 101 She got married to a guy who she initially thought was a big douche, but it turns out he's awesome. Teresa never thought she wanted children, but she changed her heart after consulting God and now has six kids. She felt like the Lord was saying to her, “What life are you after? The life of busyness and hustle and bustle or a slower paced, more intentional life?” 12:34 – The Bible is not boring People say the Old Testament is so boring, but Teresa says, “Have you actually read it? It's so full of drama.” 16:40 – Kids or no kids? Teresa didn't want kids initially because she viewed families as TV versions full of problems and stress. She babysat four times and had some terrible experiences. 22:24 – Adoption dreams After having two biological children, Teresa and her husband wanted a girl and an older boy. They now have six children. 35:32 – Adoption difficulties You should consider the birth order of your biological and adoptive children. Sometimes you have to have hard conversations with people who say things about your adopted children. Teresa corrects people when they ask how many children she has and how many she adopted. They are all her children, she says. 1:00:14 – Get to know you Last thing that made her laugh? One of Teresa's sons can impersonate her husband really well. How does she choose joy? She likes the saying “Take joy” instead of “Choose joy.” FEATURED QUOTES I felt like the Lord was saying to me, “What life are you after? The life of busyness and hustle and bustle or a slower paced, more intentional life?” I didn't know what the Lord was calling me to, but I knew pretty quickly what he was not calling me to. People say the Old Testament is so boring, but I'm like, “Have you actually read it? It's so full of drama.” https://heyitsteresa.com/bible-studies

Teresa is also the author of three new Bible studies that just released including: Leading Wherever You Are, Saying Yes In The Darkness, and Living for What Really Matters. On today's episode, Mary and Teresa dig deeply into what it looks like to have a tendency to want to run towards what is safe, how we can accidentally get to a place of planning out our years to the point that we actually end up planning God right out, and why we should be asking God to reveal His biggest desires for us rather than tackling life on our own. After listening you will walk away encouraged to live through the ‘in-between' times of waiting, be equipped to brave the storms of life with grace and faith, and embrace the life-changing perspective of seeking God's plans first and foremost. If you are ready to turn your life over to God and see where He leads, you won't want to miss this powerhouse of an episode! The one where I sit down and talk with Teresa Swanstrom Anderson! Teresa is a speaker, blogger, and Bible study teacher (and she hosts some very cool community-building events for women). She is the author of Beautifully Interrupted, in which she tells the story of how God drastically altered the path of her life when she finally surrendered her plans to Him. After publishing several Bible studies on her blog and leading studies with women at her local church, she is now releasing the Get Wisdom Bible Studies with NavPress. This series is really the best of both worlds—it is in-depth and challenging, but also conversational and accessible to newer believers. Teresa has a heart for women to come to love God more through the study of scripture, especially when they feel ill-equipped to understand scripture and to step into God’s calling. Teresa lives in Denver, CO with her husband and six children. Two of her children are biological and four were adopted from Ethiopia. You're going to love hearing from Teresa today, specifically about her new study Living For What Really Matters, available wherever books are sold! After some 5 months battling brain cancer, DJ Wilson returns to the studio with a friend of the show, Professor Todd Swanstrom. DJ starts his interview by discussing a conversation he had with Swanstrom just hours before the St Louis region learned that there would be no trial for Officer Darren Wilson (no relation), who had killed Mike Brown in Ferguson some three months earlier.  You can read a piece DJ wrote the next day, reflecting on the protests and his recorded conversation with Swanstrom right here. These two old friends go on to speak for about an hour about race, politics, economics, and if St Louisans should feel bad about the state of the region when comparing themselves to other urban areas. Here's a look at how the conversation went: Chapter 1. "Same DJ Wilson as before, just sittin' in a wheelchair." DJ briefly explains his health and jumps into a familiar topic, Ferguson, and whether we've learned or done anything to improve the region since that tragedy and subsequent uprising. (0:00-9:45) Chapter 2.  The poor have been unable to accumulate wealth while the already wealthy have been profiting off of "unearned increments." Thankfully, the professor explains this all very clearly. (9:45-15:30) Chapter 3. DJ asks Swanstrom to take out the metaphorical yardstick to compare St Louis to other cities and regions. Sprawl, Prof Swanstrom explains, is related to segreation and inequality. (15:30-31:30) Chapter 4. Can urban areas improve on their own or is Federal and State intervention and empowerment necessary? Yes. (31:30-39:00) Chapter 5. A look at the political landscape: There's a new police chief in town, we're in the middle of a race for County Executive, Expresscripts has been bought out, and more. (39:00-60:00) Thanks to DJ's family who have been helping him heal and a huge shoutout to Hank Thompson, who has been keeping Wilson's seat warm in the studio these past several months. Look for a new show from Thompson coming out in late March 2018 - right here at Podcasts.KDHX.org.

Swanstrom joins DJ Wilson to talk professorially about the idea of middle neighborhoods and how approaching community development with a public health lens -- as opposed to that of an ICU -- can be a better model for sustaining diverse neighborhoods. This sweeping conversation seamlessly covers an awful lot of ground, but here's a rough outline of how it went: 1:30-24:00 - What is a Middle Neighborhood? Swanstrom discusses housing policy, race, economic diversity, and why focusing on these diverse neighborhoods is vital to sustaining strong communities. 24:00-31:00 - The G-word: Gentrification is "a slippery term," says Swanstrom. 31:00-37:15 - Institutionalizing Collaboration: DJ and Professor Swantsrom discuss the fractured nature of the St Louis region and how we can move forward together. 37:15-end - How St Louis Compares Nationally: Of course DJ has to discuss media, but he and his guest also talk about the region's strengths and weaknesses as they compare to the rest of the US.   Links: There were a couple of mentions of DJ's conversation with 20th Ward Alderman Cara Spencer. Here's a link to that program. While discussing regional issues, DJ mentions a recent article focusing on "Better Together" initiatives. Here's a link to "Krewson, Stenger back latest push for city-county coordination." Towards the end of the program, DJ mentions Richard Florida, who writes for the Atlantic Magazine. Here's a link to the City Lab author's credits.
