Ryan tells the incredible story of Herbert Schirmer. On December 3rd, 1967, Schirmer, a twenty-two-year-old police officer, was driving down a desolate highway in Ashland, Nebraska. He approached a pair of lights that he believed to be a stalled vehicle. When he got closer, he realized it wasn't a vehicle on the road, but a craft hovering in the night sky. After a few moments, the craft shot out of sight and the officer returned to his station, noting the sighting in his logbook. But for Schirmer, there seemed to be a period of missing time between when he first saw the object and when he left the area. And when he finally recalled what had happened in those missing moments, the story became far bigger and stranger than first imagined, prompting the Air Force and Government to investigate.Presented in association with the Omaha World-Herald and including actual audio from Schirmer himself, this is the story of the abduction in Ashland. Please take a moment to rate and review us on Spotify and Apple.Book Ryan on CAMEO at: https://bit.ly/3kwz3DOPatreon: http://www.patreon.com/somewhereskiesByMeACoffee: http://www.buymeacoffee.com/UFxzyzHOaQPayPal: Sprague51@hotmail.comDiscord: https://discord.gg/NTkmuwyB4FBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ryansprague.bsky.socialTwitter: https://twitter.com/SomewhereSkiesInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/somewhereskiespod/Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ryansprague51Order Ryan's new book: https://a.co/d/4KNQnM4Order Ryan's older book: https://amzn.to/3PmydYCStore: http://tee.pub/lic/ULZAy7IY12URead Ryan's articles at: https://medium.com/@ryan-sprague51Opening Theme Song by SeptembryoCopyright © 2025 Ryan Sprague. Episode Summary:In this eye-opening episode, Garth sits down with Dr. Alex Sigmund, a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, to shine a light on one of the most intricate and underrated specialties in vet med—the eyes. Whether you're a vet student squinting at fundic exams or dreaming of your own specialty clinic one day, this conversation is a must-listen.In This Episode, We Cover:Why Diagnostics Are the Real MVPs in OphthalmologyDr. Sigmund breaks down why the eye demands precision, and how a good diagnostic plan can mean the difference between sight and blindness. Spoiler: those fluorescein stains and Schirmer tear tests are more powerful than you think.Client Communication: Explaining Eye Problems Without Getting Cross-EyedWe talk about how to translate complex eye conditions into clear language for clients—because saying “lens luxation” doesn't mean much if your client thinks it's contagious.Becoming a Veterinary Ophthalmologist: The Path from Student to SpecialistFrom internship to competitive residencies, Dr. Sigmund outlines what it really takes to enter this specialty and offers tips for standing out in a competitive field.Advice for Vet Students: Start Seeing Eyes NowWant to be an eye expert one day? Dr. Sigmund shares how students can get involved early, what rotations to look out for, and how to find mentors who won't ghost you when things get retinal. The Job Market for Eye DocsWe touch on the demand for boarded ophthalmologists, practice models (referral hospitals vs academia vs private specialty), and how new grads are navigating today's market. Why This Episode MattersEyes might be small, but they hold big clues. Send us a textWhen your pet needs ear surgery, their eyes might be the last thing on your mind. Yet Dr. Bianca Hartrum's pioneering research reveals a critical connection between ear procedures and vision health that veterinary professionals and pet owners can no longer afford to ignore.Dr. Hartrum's study examines ocular examinations before and after total ear canal ablation and bulla osteotomy (TECALBO) procedures in cats and dogs. The findings are striking: a staggering 90.9% of cats developed Horner's syndrome following surgery—far higher than previously documented rates. Additionally, 20% of patients already had eye disease related to their ear condition before surgery, while another 30% had unrelated ocular issues discovered during comprehensive exams. The research originated from a troubling case early in Dr. Hartrum's residency—a dog with a severe melting corneal ulcer and facial nerve paralysis following ear surgery. This prompted her deep dive into existing literature, where she found only passing mentions of neuro-ophthalmic complications without detailed analysis. Her study fills this critical knowledge gap with ophthalmologic expertise and data-driven recommendations that are already transforming clinical practice. The take-home message is clear and actionable: thorough eye examinations should be standard before and after ear surgeries. Dr. Hartrum recommends Schirmer tear tests, fluorescein staining, and post-operative topical lubricants as minimum protective measures. These simple steps can prevent potentially devastating vision complications. These findings can lead to new collaborative care protocols incorporating pre- and post-operative eye exams into surgical costs.Has your veterinarian discussed potential eye complications before your pet's ear surgery? Share your experience and help spread awareness about this important connection between ear and eye health in our beloved companions.JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.24.08.0533INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ® OR AJVR ® ? For people of faith, a minister is supposed to be a figure of trust, a rock to support you in times of trouble. Not everyone who holds that position meets those ideals, though. This week's story is about a man whose minister's robes and carefully practiced smiles hid a heart burning with violence and dark desires, someone who would betray every trust given to him and leave pain—not salvation—in his wake. Hey buddies! This week I have on Michael Jasorka! Michael is a comic artist and expert on the 1967 Herbert Schirmer UFO encounter in Ashland, Nebraska. Michael created an amazing comic depicting (in Herbert's own words) his encounter, in great detail, I might add. As far as I know, Michael knows more about this case than anyone alive. He's one of the rare few who had meaningful correspondence with Herb before he died. This was a special one for me, as I'm obsessed with high strangeness in Nebraska. If you're into the Herb Schirmer story, or UFO history, this one is not to be missed! Enjoy! For more Michael Jasorka:http://www.bombshell-comics.com/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaYc9X32Q48RheOr-OhdIyaL2lZnTklJpyQlje-Rw0Ja_ZcnK1hQRMNTOzk_aem_jivrSUGk3AiOLqTFXOWM1Ahttps://www.instagram.com/bombshell_comics/Steve Berg LInks:https://www.patreon.com/HiStrangenesslinktr.ee/stevebergPretty please subscribe and leave a review!

Nikolai Schirmer has made quite a name for himself by sometimes sailing to — and then, almost always climbing up — very technical lines, then often flashing those lines at ridiculous speeds on relatively lightweight gear. Could your trusted local minister harbor a secret life of malevolence? This episode peels back the veneer of piety surrounding Arthur Burton Schirmer, the "sinister minister," exposing a trail of untimely deaths including those of his two wives and a troubled congregant. As we share the heart-wrenching narratives of those affected by these tragedies, we also spotlight the relentless pursuit of truth by the families and law enforcement that eventually cast a glaring light on Shermer's shadowy existence.

SynopsisBy the time of his death in 1998, pop singer Frank Sinatra was such a domineering figure in his field that he was known as “The Chairman of the Board.” By the time of his death in 1992, the same nickname might have applied to the American composer William Schuman, who was, at various times, director of publications for G. Schirmer, president of the Juilliard School, president of Lincoln Center, and on the board of many other important American musical institutions. William Schuman even looked the part of a distinguished, well-dressed CEO. Oddly enough, he came rather late to classical music.Schuman was born on today's date in 1910, and, as a teenager in New York City, was more interested in baseball than music, even though his dance band was the rage of Washington High School. It was with some reluctance that 19-year old Billy Schuman was dragged to a New York Philharmonic concert conducted by Arturo Toscanini. The program included a symphony by someone named Robert Schumann, and Billy was pretty impressed. A few years later, in 1933, when he heard the First Symphony of the contemporary American composer Roy Harris, Schuman was hooked, and soon was writing concert music himself. By 1941, when his Third Symphony premiered, Schuman was recognized as a major talent, and in 1943 he was awarded the first Pulitzer Prize for Music.Music Played in Today's ProgramWilliam Schuman (1910-1992) Symphony No. 3 New York Philharmonic; Leonard Bernstein, conductor. In 2018, Douglas Shadle tweeted about systemic discrimination in American orchestral programming. His thread went viral, and he soon found himself doing what became known, around then, as public musicology. In this conversation, he talks about presenting his work outside the academy through advocating for marginalized composers, and what the Florence Price revival has meant for his scholarship (and, more troublingly, how Schirmer's acquisition of her music may actually prevent it from being heard). Douglas Shadle is associate professor of musicology at Vanderbilt University.Show notes and more over at soundexpertise.org!Questions? Thoughts? The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe Herbert Schirmer's late night experience. December 1967. All was quiet. All was still. Except for those red lights in the distance and being that Herbert was a police officer, Herbert simply had to investigate them. Bad idea. Herbert would see a UFO and once Herbert called it in, Herbert may have lost time. You know what that means. On the note of lost time, we may solve that shocking conundrum during this episode… On the note of solving things, the Condon Committee were at hand to investigate this one at the time alongside a certain favourite of the show regression hypnotherapist. What they would discover would spawn a wonderful comic and a beer. Herbert believed, but do we believe Herbert? All that and more on this week's file. Around 25 minutes in there was a snippet of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the form of the Shop theme from Nintendo's 1998 masterpiece composed by Hero of Sound, Kōji Kondō. At the end of the episode we played the Staff Roll aka credits theme from 1990-1992's Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), also composed by that Hero of Sound. Maybe we should read credits over this bit?

Hello from three time zones! This week, Tammy is joined by Debt Collective organizers Ann Larson and Eleni Schirmer to reflect on the movement that won historic relief from student debt. But first, we remember the great Barbara Ehrenreich, who passed last week. Ehrenreich was an author and activist best known for her bestselling book Nickel and Dimed, a hard-hitting yet beautifully written dive into the low-wage economy. She also made incredible contributions to leftist movements, from DSA to domestic workers, the Economic Hardship Reporting Project and In These Times, as well as her often-misunderstood warning about the “professional–managerial class.” And Ann reminds us that Ehrenreich wrote about more than just labor! In our main segment, we celebrate and dissect a rare victory on the left. Ann and Eleni talk about their personal journeys toward calling b******t on all kinds of debt—and trace Biden's recent debt-cancellation announcement to its Occupy Wall Street origins and a decade of painstaking organizing. We reflect on the path forged by the Corinthian debt strikers, the public sector's broader reliance on debt, the “proof of concept” in Biden's nowhere-near-enough cancellation policy, and the way that framing debt as a shared economic condition opens up new organizing opportunities. (A real-life case study in solidarity on the basis of class!) Plus: how all of us can get involved to make the debt announcement a reality. Thanks for listening.
