We figure out what went wrong in Sporting KC's 1-0 loss to the Chicago Fire. KC has come back down to earth with a 1-2-2 record in the June. Dany Rosero's absence made a big impact in the physical battle on set pieces, as well as with our old friend Kei Kamara. Daniel Salloi has gone quiet the past couple games, and we need more from our star player. It's time to switch back to Pulskamp in goal. If he's the man for the future he needs the experience. There were some boo's heard on the broadcast when Khiry Shelton was subbed into the match. But are the fans angry at Khiry, or Peter Vermes? New reports out of Mexico (as always, remember that hefty grain of salt) that Alan Pulido will finish out his contract with SKC this MLS season. But time is running out before other clubs can sign a pre-contract. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Khiry's back. An aging lineup. Tons of questions about the backline. Sporting KC opens the MLS season with a shutout loss. It's time to panic, right? A quick glance at fan reactions across the internet seem to indicate a resounding yes. With injuries to the three best players on the team, Peter Vermes once again trotted out an aging lineup against the Portland Timbers in the 2023 season opener. Relying too much on Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza, and Ben Sweat is not something anybody wants to see this season. Khiry Shelton on the right wing was another one sure to have fans groaning. As new & returning players get to full fitness, what would you do with the Starting XI? We look at all options, including Marinos Tzionis, who turned in a solid shift off the bench. Many questions were answered... just not the way we wanted. Robert Voloder showed he still has kinks to work out. Ben Sweat is still Ben Sweat. A bright spot was Remi Walter. He was deployed in the holding midfield role and was probably the best player on the field for SKC. Erik Thommy, rocking the Captain's arm band, looked like he is ready to show us a new level to his game after an impressive first season. Is 1-0 away at Portland cause to panic? Reinforcements are coming and this lineup isn't exactly what we can expect all season. Next up is the Colorado Rapids, who will be missing the absolute pest of Diego Rubio. Even the most optimistic Sporting KC fans are having a hard time seeing a path to the MLS Cup Playoffs these days. But Lamar Hunt is giving Kansas City another chance at glory. Wednesday night's match against the Sacramento Republic FC is the biggest match of the season. The best attempts at ignoring the loss to LAFC went ignored. There was too much to talk about from Erik Thommy & William Agada making their debuts, to Khiry Shelton's worst performance ever. Everyone in the stadium can see he has zero confidence. What is your starting lineup for the US Open Cup Semifinal? Who starts at striker? Is it really possible Khiry starts up top again? The club's worst season in over a decade has brought out an ugly side to the fanbase. But is it different than other teams and other sports? Brian Bliss is technically the Sporting KC Technical Director. How does that differ from Peter Vermes' role and should more blame be directed towards Bliss for this season's failure? After a historically bad 7-2 loss at the hands of the Portland Timbers, we've hit a new low for Sporting KC. It's quite an unfamiliar place for this organization since the rebrand. So.. where do we go from here? We might still be searching for rock bottom. OR.. they could figure things out and still make a run at the playoffs. The arguments can be had about who should be playing, of course. Tzionis should be getting more time, Khiry less. But that won't save the team this year. What can the club do to show they still care? Sign a midfielder? Change the formation & style of play to fit our current talent? For years SKC fans have heard the mantra, "Play the kids." Well the kids played. Are they not as good as we hoped? Several goals can be chalked up to youthful mistakes, but that youth is going to be forced on the field a lot this season. So the problem isn't going away. Peter Vermes is getting the lion's share of fan frustration. Is it possible he gets fired this year? How many losses would it actually take? His job of building the roster this year as Technical Director failed. There's no denying that with the power of hindsight after injuries to the two best players. Is this cause to fire him? Could we see Vermes step away from either TD or Manager? This show is not close to wanting Vermes Out. But we discuss alternatives. Is there really anyone out there better suited to lead SKC? Yes, there have been a lot of questions asked. That's because we're confused. We're not used to this. Our football team has us drinking! Khiry Shelton got the start again and played the full 90 minutes, With Nikola Vujnovic waiting behind him, how long his Khiry's leash? Daniel Salloi has gone cold again. The show wants to see more Marinos Tzionis, but disagrees on where he can be used best. Peter Vermes made changes on the backline and he was rewarded with a shutout by centerbacks Kortne Ford & Robert Voloder. Will we see the same four against FC Dallas? Not every business needs to be cause driven, but having a cause can definitely drive business.   Today we talk to Jameel Mohammad, founder of the Afro-futurist luxury brand Khiry who was just recently named one of Forbes 30 under 30: Arts and Culture. Mohammed launched Khiry from the couch of a friend’s dorm room while studying poly-sci at the University of Pennsylvania.   In his own words he started Khiry “with the goal of subverting the conventions of luxury positioning to make pointed statements about the value of black life and culture.”  People are listening and his client list is impressive.   While he may not have expected the venture to grow the way it has, his success is encouraging for all those who are more than ready to see real change.   In today’s show we talk about Mohammed’s inspirations for the brand, how he managed to catch the eye of key buyers and decision makers at Barney’s NY and Vogue. He walks us through how he balances the creative process while attending to business needs all while staying true to his mission. We also had a great conversation about how we, Jill and Amelia, two white, middle(ish)-aged, suburban moms can be responsible consumers and supporters of retail goods that have strong references to African culture and art.   We are so grateful to have had Jameel on the show so early in his career and can’t wait to follow his success. Hear about the journey this athlete from Midland, TX took have a career in the NFL For the New Orleans Saints Football team. Then being awarded the game ball by Drew Brees for an outstanding game. The New Orleans Saints signed Robinson as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2013 on a tryout basis, and he survived training camp to make the team. Robinson ran for 224 yards in 10 regular season games, and had a key role in the Saints' first-round playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2014, Robinson was again part of the Saints' corps of running backs. When Mark Ingram suffered a broken hand in Week 2, Robinson's role increased. In a Week 5 overtime game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he finished the game with a well-executed 18-yard run for a touchdown that won the game 37–31. In 2015, Robinson continued to be a part of the Saints' running back line up. In the Week 8 victory over the New York Giants, Khiry's season came to an end when he suffered a tibia fracture and was placed on injured reserve. He ended the season with 56 carries for 180 yards and four touchdowns.

He tries to do the same thing every day to reduce his cognitive load so he can make important decisions. He also uses his daily workouts to do a mental cleanup so that he can reprioritize what he has to do as well as getting bursts of ideas for problems he needs to solve. 90 Shades of Blue: Recapping our New York City FC in 90 seconds. In front of over 25 thousand fans New York City and FC Dallas played a not so pretty game ending at 2-2. In the 8th minute Tommy McNamara tapped in a shot to put NYC up 1-0 with a great feed by Ronald Matarrita and amazing header pass by Jack Harrison. Great Awareness and team work! Twelve minutes later, Dallas’ Maximiliano Urruti burns our defense and forces a shot into the net that Saunders could not deflect enough to tie the match at 1-1. Tied 1-1 at the half, City gave up an early goal when Michael Barrios is kept on sides AND much like McNamara’s first goal, easily taps it in. Dallas goes up 2-1. Though don’t count City out, not with fresh cut Shelton coming off the bench, when in the 78th minute Khiry slams in a beautiful header to tie the game 2-2 and all credit goes to Mr Jack Harrison who lobbed a beautiful cross into the box. End of game 2-2. Quick Points: Our fan base either likes or dislikes Mendoza. He certainly didn’t help himself when he missed a huge opportunity in the 93rd minute. Thankfully it was only to WIN the game, imagine if it was to tie. Great game by McNamara offensively. Yes I like McNamara starting over Mendoza and he nearly got another goal off corner kick during the second half. He was also the player defending Urruti on Dallas’ first goal and he was the man who kept Barrios on-sides for Dallas’ second goal. Talking about Poor game defensively…Jefferson Mena…gosh. The Colombian homer in me is fading for him. Should Hernandez start over Mena moving forward? I say no. What do you think? Hate on Josh Saunders as much as you want but this game he came through. The biggest of saves was against Tesho Akindele in the 90th minute which would of made it 3-2 for Dallas. Don’t forget to follow the podcast on Twitter @NYCFCPodcast and myself @TheAndresSoto Week Wrap up: NYC stays in 3rd place in the Eastern Division with 45 points and with a negative 1 goal differential. Toronto clinched a playoff spot with their 3-3 tie against the Red Bulls leaving them in first with 47 points and New Jersey in second with 45. Both teams have a positive 12 goal differential. Philadelphia who lost against Portland stays in 4th place and 4 points behind New York City. NYC's next game is Friday, September 23 vs. Chicago Fire who are currently in last place in the Eastern Division.
