Put Your Happiness Before Goals Happiness should not be something that we defer until we achieve a specific goal. It should be a state of being that we cultivate every single day. It should be an emotion that we make incredibly easy to achieve. If you are reading this blog right now you have a lot to feel happy about. You have your sight. You have an internet connection and a device that is more powerful than the computers NASA used to put a man on the moon. You have full control of your brain and an ability to comprehend complex ideas and sentences. You have a LOT to be happy about. So act like it. Lower your barrier to happiness. Make a conscious effort to cultivate more happiness in your life by making it stupid simple to feel happy. When you wake up each morning, take a moment to feel happy for the warm sheets and cozy blankets covering your body. When you walk into work (even if you hate it) be happy that you have some sort of employment. When you come home each day, be happy that you have a roof over your head and food in your belly. Be happy now. Because now is all that we have. 2. Fulfillment is Dependent on Direction So often people assume that fulfillment is dependent on achieving some goal or arriving at some arbitrary destination. It’s not. Fulfillment should depend on one thing and one thing only… Direction. Sit down in a quiet place later this week and really ask yourself what direction you want to take your life. Don’t tie this to a specific goal or outcome, simply a direction. Do you want to move in the direction of more physical fitness? Greater financial freedom? More love and abundance? Whatever you decide, write it down and then commit to take three actions each day that move you in that direction. 3. Pain is a Messenger Most people try to ignore or hide from pain. This is like trying to put a bandaid on cancer. Pain is a messenger. It’s there to tell you that something is broken and you need to fix it. If you have a broken arm, a shot of morphine will numb the pain but it won’t solve the problem. You need to visit a hospital, get a cast, and allow your bones to heal. Pain in your life is the same way. If you are depressed, anxious, or feeling overwhelmed… Good. This is a sign that something in your life isn’t working. And you have the power to fix it. Whenever you experience pain don’t run from it. Feel it. Experience it fully and sit in it for a few hours. Ask yourself, “What is this pain trying to tell me?” Are you in the wrong job or relationship? Struggling to be disciplined with your finances? Overweight and unhealthy? Before you run from the pain always try to uncover why you are experiencing pain in the first place. Because until you solve the root cause of the problem, you will never truly overcome the pain. 4. Focus on Financial Freedom First People will often begin their journey of self-transformation by trying to fix their relationships, their career, or pursuing more of their passions. In most cases, this approach is completely backward. The first step that you should take to building your dream life and achieving your biggest goals is to achieve financial freedom. Until you have the money to do what you want, when you want, with whom you want, everything else should be secondary. Financial freedom will revolutionize every aspect of your life. It will allow you to travel more and pursue your passions with greater ease. It will allow you to have more choices in your relationships and care for the people you love. It will allow you to take care of your body and give yourself the care and attention you truly need. Financial freedom opens the doors of life and allows you to pursue your dreams on your terms. Focus on getting your money right first, and the rest will follow. 5. Pick One Thing and Stick With it to Completion One of the most powerful ways to improve your quality of life is to master the art of single focusing on a task to completion. Life isn’t short. We make it short by chasing too many goals at once and filling our time with unnecessary garbage. By learning to pick a goal or project and see it through to completion, you will unlock one of the master skills of life and learn that you can accomplish anything you want with the right sequencing and a little perseverence. Pick one goal and stick to it. The benefits will be enormous.

Guest Introduction: Tal Gur is a blogger, coach, lifestyle entrepreneur, and devoted adventurer. He is the creator of the blog Fully Lived, where he has documented his personal journey to complete 100 life goals in 10 years. He has tackled financial, physical, and spiritual dreams one by one, including completing Ironman New Zealand, creating financial independence, surfing at the world’s most sought-after beaches, and rebuilding a Peruvian family’s flood-ravaged home. Tal is also the author of the book “The Art of Fully Living: 1 Man. 10 Years. 100 Life Goals Around the World.” Interview Summary: In this episode, Tal begins by talking about what inspired him to decide to pursue 100 life goals in 10 years. He references a conversation that he had with a few friends that deeply changed his outlook on life. He discusses some of the major goals he's achieved on this journey, and talks about the importance of motivation and immersion in helping you to successfully reach your goals. Tal then takes us through his process for achieving goals, and talks about the benefits of having a coach and support system. He offers advice on overcoming weaknesses, optimizing your mindset to erase limiting beliefs, and exploring the why behind your goals. He also talks about using meditation and mindfulness to uncover insights and gain clarity on which goals to pursue. In recent years, Tal has shifted his goals to focus more on being of service and providing value to others. We ask him how this has changed his life. In the second part of this interview, Tal discusses some of his core values and how he discovered them. He offers advice for listeners who might be in a funk or feeling stuck in life, and how they can find and connect more with their aliveness. He also talks about the concept of essence and what it entails. Tal suggests that listeners check out www.16personalities.com to take a personality test to learn more about themselves and their essence. The discussion then leads into the topic of fear: what it is, why we experience it, and how to build courage, follow your heart, and take action despite fear. Tal emphasizes the importance of going out of your comfort zones and re-framing fear to use it to your advantage. He also shares a story about a near death experience and what he learned from this event. Finally, Tal offers some tips on how to choose more empowering beliefs and assumptions, and explains how he uses curiosity to re-examine life events and situations that might otherwise be perceived as bad. He walks us through his spiritual practice, which centers around enjoying the moment, being present, and letting go of attachment to outcome and form. Tal Gur is a nomad and avid goal seeker. Around a decade ago, he made a decision to pursue every big dream to live life on his own terms. He wrote a bucket list of 100 life goals - from Ironman triathlon, to non-stop travel, to become financially free - and gave himself exactly 10 years to achieve them all. Little did I know that that night would change the course of my his life. Through relentless focus, Tal traded his daily grind for a life of his own daring design, as a location-independent entrepreneur and coach. He tackled financial, physical, and spiritual dreams one by one: mastering English in pulsing Melbourne, completing Ironman New Zealand, creating financial independence, surfing at the world’s most sought-after beaches, and rebuilding a Peruvian family’s flood-ravaged home, among other adventures. Tal shares not only his journey but how the book was a celebration of this journey.

We talk a lot about the things that make us happy and are supposed to change our life. Some of us try out a bit of advice here and there but most of us don't go about it fully. Today we hear from a doer, someone who decided that he was ready to dedicate himself fully to explore and experience what a fulfilled life really means.

For Life on Purpose Episode #84, my guest is internet entrepreneur, coach, traveler, and financial freedom enthusiast Tal Gur. He joined me for a great and in-depth conversation on his new book "The Art of Fully Living-1 Man. 10 Years. 100 Life Goals." Shortly after turning 30, Tal himself these following questions: "Imagine knowing you had only 10 years to live - Would you change your life? How?" Inspired by a late-night conversation with friends, and disillusioned with the trappings of "making it", he then drafted a list of 100 goals to achieve in a decade. Through relentless focus, he traded his daily grind for a life of his own daring design as a location-independent entrepreneur and coach. "What makes a life fully lived? Comfort? Conventional success? For me, it’s all about the thrill and satisfaction that come from a continuous quest for adventure and self-discovery." About Tal: My story has been written from many perspectives and been enriched by the people and places I've encountered along the way. After leaving school, aged 21, I embarked on a long motorcycle trip in Australia & immediately fell in love with this remote, vast and spectacular corner of the world. I went back to my home country to pursue a bachelor's degree but the memory of that epic trip never left me. In 2003, after several years working in the high-tech world and feeling there was something missing, I decided to change direction and follow a lifelong dream of mine: living and studying in Australia. In late 2005, being inspired from the sheer enjoyment that came from pursuing my Australian dream, I made a conscious decision to pursue every big dream I have ever had. I started a long life goals list and gave myself 10 years to be completely finished with this project. After a few blissful years in Melbourne, Australia, I sold everything I had, packed a small backpack, and left on a one way ticket to Nepal. This trip turned to be a fateful encounter, eventually leading me to leave my stable job, become an online entrepreneur, and travel and live abroad in various countries for more than than 6 years. Ever since I remember myself I was intrigued with the endless possibilities of self-expression. I simply see life as a playground to express our deepest desires and experiment with the perceived limits of the physical world. Looking at my life, I have come to realize that my life is not just one linear continuous journey but more as a recollection of different journeys and experiences. I've learnt that it is definitely not all about the destination, but more about the journey. And the greater the challenge, the more satisfying it is. Since my move to Australia, being inspired from the satisfaction and sense of achievement that came from pursing my Australian dream, I found myself constantly seeking new challenges, overextending myself in all aspects of life, ultimately resulting in very happy and fulfilling journeys. Nicos Hadjicostis wrote the book Destination Earth after traveling to more than 70 countries in 6 years in his 40's. His goal was to learn to look at all of earth as though it were a single destination, beyond arbitrary national and cultural borders. His book, and Gregory's own Travel As Transformation, are a rare type of book to explore the philosophical implications and profound personal transformation made possible only by travel. Though Gregory and Nicos agree on many things, there is still a world of differentiated nuance in the conclusions their respective journeys have brought them to. Gregory’s book is written from the perspective of a naïve young Californian man rapidly coming to realize how much bigger the world is than he was ever led to believe. Nicos’ book is written by a man approaching middle age who already had a wealth of practical and philosophical expertise on the world. Both books are predominantly philosophy books, presented through the categorical structure of travel experiences. They are not typical “travel” books. Nicos compares the choices a traveler makes in the way he chooses where to go and what to do in a new country to the choices we make for how we structure every aspect of our lives and identities. There is always more to see and to do than we are capable of accomplishing with limited time. Diminishing returns also quickly become a factor in any new activity. Every traveler must choose for themselves when it is optimal to move on to the next location or activity, just as each of us must decide when to move on to a new stage of our personal development. If you were to travel back in time to any ancient culture on Earth, you would be unable to understand the cultural mindset that existed back then to explain the dominant behaviors of any group of people. The same principle applies even many of the modern cultures that currently exist. The further away you step from your home country, the more flexible you are going to have to become in your analysis of why people act the ways they do. You must eventually accept that everyone has their own reasons for doing what they do, not matter how strange or offensive you might find their behavior to be. The more you experience as you travel, and the older you are when you have these experiences, the harder it will be to reconcile the new knowledge you have acquired with your old interpretations of life. Nicos explains that travel engenders more travel. He originally planned to only travel for two years, but sooner after setting off he realized that the world was much bigger than he anticipated. There were so many more things to see and do than he could have guessed when he began. People can only derive the principles of their identity by having a wide berth of incidental experiences that show them what is possible and how they respond to everything that can happen. If you work many different types of jobs in your life, you will quickly see what you like or dislike about each one. Being proud of one’s nation necessarily divides the human race along arbitrary lines, pitting us against each other when we could all be working together for common goals. When national pride can expand to become global pride, we can evolve past our present sociological problems. World travel breaks down the identification barriers in an individual mind, and perhaps then may be a necessary part of the process of fixing the world’s dualistic problems of fighting against its own interests. Individuals can begin taking strategic steps now to start living the life of a global citizen now, even if the rest of the world isn’t ready. Your group identification ends only where you allow it to. Moving into the unknown is a function of your will to act when you don’t know what’s going to happen. If you can master your fear, everything else in the journey begins to fall into place. It has nothing to do with how well you plan or what you think you want. Take the first step, and then be ready to take the next. Tal Gur is an author and personal development professional who recently completed a transformational journey of spending 10 years accomplishing 100 specific goals around the world. He started at 31, and is now ready to share what he learned in his upcoming autobiographical book, The Art of Fully Living: One Man, Ten Years, a Hundred Life Goals. Tal devoted each year of his decade-long journey to a different aspect of his personal transformation. He learned that going to uncomfortable extremes could teach him more than staying in the comfortable middle of any domain. Transformation is not random or spontaneous. It is cumulative and logical. We move in sequence from one change to another according to patterns and rules. Most people are not in tune with their own minds, bodies, and emotions, so they do not know the right path for themselves. Tal had to learn through his many trials how to get in tune with himself to find his authentic core. Not everyone has to spend 10 years pursuing 100 goals to find themselves. The journey is different for everyone. You have to be curious. You have to be willing to go on your journey, whatever it is. Not everyone needs to know themselves deeply to be happy. But for others, it is the only option. We all create our lifestyle and our goals based on the timescale through which we evaluate our lives. What would you do if you only had one day left to live? A decade? Forever? Your actions can be defined by processes or objectives, journeys or destinations. How we worked hard to keep the momentum going for the attendees while enjoying their time in Thailand.
