45 Days, One hour and 27 minutes. That's how long Nini Champion and Lisa Roland spent rowing non-stop in the Atlantic Ocean during the 2023 Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge, a 3,000 nm unassisted ocean row beginning in La Gomera, Spain and finishing in the Caribbean port of English Harbour, Antigua.(For our non-maritime audience, that's over 3452 land miles and 5555 kilometers!) In two-hour increments and through every curveball from Mother Nature imaginable, the ladies traded rowing, eating, and sleeping duties, all while setting a new world record for the women's pair in this event. Sara chats with both Nini and Lisa today as they share details about their inspiration for this feat of endurance, their training regime, how they stayed alert and supportive of each other's physical and mental needs. Yes, it's extremely important to be physically strong, as they say, but these two women who both have impressive resumes in the sailing industry, also stress the importance of having a strong mindset and a mission-drive goal. Their mission? It's a personal one, especially for Lisa. They raise money for their Bridges Over Water Program, providing scholarships for young adults who have aged out of the foster care system and want to pursue a career in the maritime industry. Lisa herself was a product of the foster care system and, at 15, experienced challenges with addiction and homelessness. Sailing saved her and she and Nini hope to provide the same safety net for others. Not only is this an inspiring (and also humorous) look at their race and expedition, it is also an example of two women succeeding together and elevating the possibilities in a male dominated industry — which is women's performance at its best.cover photo courtesy of World's Toughest RowTeam Ocean Grown WebsiteBridges Over Water Grant FundFollow Team Ocean Grown on InstagramRegister for the Feisty Summer STRONG Course: https://www.womensperformance.com/strong Sign up to Receive The Feisty 40+ Newsletter:https://www.feistymenopause.com/blog/Feisty-40-plus Sign up to Receive The Feist Newsletter:https://www.womensperformance.com/the-feist Follow us on Instagram:@feisty_womens_performance Feisty Media Website:https://livefeisty.com/ https://www.womensperformance.com/ Support our Partners:Hettas: Use code FEISTY20 for 20% off at https://hettas.com/ MOTTIV: Get two months of full premium access with the code FEISTY at mymottiv.com Lagoon Sleep: Go to LagoonSleep.com/performance and take the 2 minute sleep quiz to find your match, and then use the code PERFORMANCE for 15% off your first purchase

Ep 8. Most of us have done a little bit of charity fundraising at some point in our lives - we've maybe run a 5K or given up alcohol for a few weeks or completed an erg challenge. Most of us haven't raised £42 million for charity. My guest this week, the amazing Bernie Hollywood OBE, has done just that alongside an incredibly demanding career as a banker.  This extraordinarily driven man has run 150 marathons, trekked to both Poles, crossed deserts, and is now planning to row the Atlantic on his own. Equally importantly, he's just taken up the position of Foundation Manager of Love Rowing - British Rowing's new charitable foundation aimed at increasing diversity and inclusivity in rowing. I was so delighted when Bernie agreed to come on the show as his values align so much with those of Girl on the River, and I was keen to quiz him about exactly what Love Rowing is all about. In this episode we discuss:What motivates Bernie to be such a prolific fundraiser and how it all beganWhy he always refers to his charity challenges as "adventures"Bernie's ethosLove Rowing - its aims and objectives and how it will workHow rowing makes a difference in young people's livesBernie's next adventure - the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic challenge The innovations Bernie is introducing to his Atlantic rowBernie's ambitions to raise £1 million for Love Rowing and the SamaritansYou can find out all about Love Rowing on its website, here, and on Twitter at @LoveRowing_BRCF. There are Irish adventurer racers and then there's Gavan Hennigan, he had to deal with a lot of struggles in his teenage years and suffered badly at the hands of an alcohol and drug addiction, he went into rehab at the age of 21 and hasn't looked back. Not only has he stayed clean and sober since then but he has gone on to take on some of the biggest and most challenging races on the planet, his latest being in March of this year which was the 350 mile Iditarod trail invitational foot race which cuts through Alaska in the harshest of conditions, not only did he finish it after having some pretty cool hallucinations but he won the race out right. He has a long list of adventure races on his CV such as crossing the 700 km frozen Lake Baikal in Siberia, The Likeys 6633 Ultra which is a 566km non-stop, self-sufficient foot race, and the 500km Yukon to name a few. His biggest adventure to date was to row solo across Atlantic Ocean as part of the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge. The 5, 000 km crossing took Gavan 49 days to complete and he finished on February 1st 2017 landing in Antigua after spending the entire time alone in his 20ft boat 'Doireann'. He left La Gomera in the Canaries on December 14th 2016. Not only did he win the Solo category of the race, breaking the race record for the concept class, but he beat all the other 3-man and pair boats, finishing in 3rd overall behind the 4-man boats recording one of the fastest times for a solo crossing. I've decided to record a two part series, in part 1 we unpack his recent win in the (Ididarod) Iditarod trail invitational foot race, in part 2 we look back to the adversity that Gavan had to over come, the turning point and the journey that brought him to where he is today. An inspiring story that we can all learn from, no matter how tough it gets in life there is always a path to greatness. • Want to improve your leadership skills? Row across the Atlantic Ocean* • “I do crazy adventures basically, seemingly impossible things” • *Or you could listen to this podcast Jason Caldwell has done something it is safe to say very few other humans have ever done in the history of humankind: He's has rowed a small boat some 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. Not once, but twice. He admits to making mistakes on that first row, but he corrected course for the second time and after rowing for 35 days, 14 hours, and 3 minutes he and his crew won the perilous 2016 Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge—or, as it's known to those who attempt it, “The World's Toughest Row.” They not only succeeded but set a world record. But for Mr. Caldwell, the rowing had a larger purpose and he has taken what he learned from both rows and folded the knowledge into his Bay Area business, Latitude 35. He explains how it all fits together in this CVBT Audio Interview podcast.

Fight Oar Die with Bryant Knight Getting out of the military is tough enough but with an estimated 1/3 of all deployed soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from the invisible wounds of war like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury, this transition becomes nearly impossible. Bryant Knight, a retired Army Major and combat veteran, wanted to do something to help out. He is the president the ocean rowing team Fight Oar Die and along with three other Army combat vets; Alex Evans, Beau Maier and Chris Kuntz, they tackled the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge. This 3000 NM race from the Canary Islands to Antigua tests the most seasoned mariners and it gave them the perfect opportunity to bring some awareness to this very serious problem. Listen in! What lengths would you go to, to change the world…to inspire others to change the world? Alex Evans, along with three other military veterans, is rowing a boat across the Atlantic Ocean to do just that. He’s part of the 1st all-American Military veteran team – aptly titled “Fight Oar Die” – that will race across the Atlantic Ocean in December 2018, in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge – a race that has challenged individuals and teams from around the world for years. Their goal is to increase “awareness of and support for the cognitive, behavioral, and physical health of U.S. Military/Veteran personnel” and inspire them and others to live their best life. In this episode, we sit down with Team Skipper Alex Evans and team psychologist and Iraq veteran, Dr. Jacob Hyde, who will be monitoring the team throughout the race to better understand the effects of mental trauma and extreme duress on the human body. Hear firsthand how this seemingly crazy idea came to fruition, and where it will take the Fight Oar Die Team by year’s end…and beyond! www.usvetrow.org Support the podcast by supporting our sponsors at www.hazardground.com/sponsors!
