The target Lara's dad set when he was younger was “Aim High”. Don't look left or right - FOCUS - and aim high. And boy, did she!Lara Vafiadis took on the Atlantic Challenge row for a few reasons - but a primary aim was to inspire other women and children that if you set your mind to something, you can achieve anything.Seeing her dad suffer through years of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and everything that goes with cancer treatments - his determination and resilience took on another level and Lara thought to herself - if he can go through all of that, then she can row an ocean for him. This row was dedicated to Lara's father for all the times he went "above and beyond." He passed away on September 14, 2022, so he didn't get to see Lara finish but she knew he was with her with every oar stroke, from La Gomera, Portugal to Antigua.

"The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Proud and delighted to welcome BACK for a second row past - with the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean for his 'Clearing', Scottish Actor Cal MacAninch, here to describe his Epic Quest and the profound lessons-learned from having just rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in a Crew of 5, as part of "Atlantic Body & Soul" for the Talisker Whisker Atlantic Challenge.A story of Distinction & Genius indeed: Massive waves, sleep deprivation, pain, flying fish and hallucinations akimbo to name but some of what was experienced during an epic quest of 39 days and gargantuan proportions.Cal MacaAninch is a wonderful & versatile Scottish Actor and now an Atlantic Rowing Superhero & Legend to boot (or to boat - see what I'm doing there?!)More about Cal: Whatever Cal MacAninch has achieved as an actor - and the body of his work is impressive - he now has a rare achievement indeed to add, as a rower. Cal has just rowed the Atlantic! And this is no mean achievement - for almost 40 days, Cal and the other 4 crew members set about this extraordinary journey in consecutive 2 hour shifts, 24/7. The effects of daily sleep deprivation and almost endless, constantly painful physical exercise are virtually unimaginable. Fortunately for us, Cal MacAninch has an actor's memory and a wonderful way with with words. This podcast focuses relentlessly on his one truly epic and almost certainly life-changing experience. Cal tells us about the constant need for calories and hydration, up to 6000 every day and endless refreshment. Yet the impact still left everyone in a state that Cal describes as ‘breakdown' and in his case, the witness of numerous totally lifelike hallucinations. The whole journey was undertaken to raise money for two chosen charities whose primary purpose is to improve mental health care for young people - but the crew's own mental health was severely tested in the process! Cal is now debriefing his personal experience to a leading neurological scientist in Scotland. He acknowledges that it was was an ordeal but one that changed him - for the better! It left him he believes, with a better perspective: a more tolerant attitude, a kinder man, a better listener. Hear it all here for yourself. It is a truly extraordinary story - and it's all true! Harrowing though it is at times, Cal MacAninch tells it calmly and quietly but with a refreshing brand of candour and his own uniquely authentic Scottish sincerity.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'.
Earlier this year, we heard from actor Cal McAninch about the Porty team taking on the Atlantic Challenge. Well, Atlantic Body and Soul have been training hard and tackling longer and longer trips (you may have seen photographs on social media of their week-long expedition around the West Coast of Scotland) in preparation for the event in December. David Calder met two of the crew, Alec Martin and Matt Callis, to find out about their progress. https://atlanticbodyandsoul.com/https://www.taliskerwhiskyatlanticchallenge.com/http://bodyandsoulcharity.org/https://the-junction.org/

Rowing. Across the Atlantic Ocean. No breaks. 70+ days. How in the world do people sign on for a project like this? Every year in mid-December about 30 teams of 1 to 5 do just that, and take on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge (#TWAC), considered the toughest rowing challenge in the world. Starting in La Gomera (Canary Islands) the course tracks over the Atlantic to Antigua (Caribbean) for a distance of 4,800 km over 30-75 days. In December of this year, five members of the Eastern Amateur Rowing Club from here in Portobello will head off on the adventure of a lifetime - the Atlantic Challenge, a 3,000 mile trip in a specially-designed rowing boat from the Canaries to Antigua. It's the brainchild of actor Cal MacAninch who told David Calder about the mountain the team have to climb over the next few months. That team includes Matt Callis, Sean Watters, Ed van der Ven and Alec Martin. Their aim is to raise money for their chosen charity 'Body and Soul' which helps people, young people in particular, who have mental health problems. Alleine schaffst Du es nie! Keine Heldenreise ohne Team.
Was passiert nachts? Kommt irgendwann die Angst? Wen trifft man unterwegs? Verändert dich die Challenge? Was kommt jetzt? Was alles dazu gehört und wie Martin diesen Ratschlag umsetzten will, erfährst Du in diesem Interview. Es bleibt also spannend! Aussie rower talks about his preparation for the "Atlantic Challenge" race event
In this episode we interview Jonathan Harrison, who started the rowing team - Pacific Boys. In December 2021 they'll row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic. Why? To help clothe 3,000 children. Oh, and for the adventure too. It wasn't until his college days that Jonathan fell in love with rowing and at that time he didn't know he and his team would attempt such a feat. That was until he learned about the Atlantic Challenge which begins in the Canary Islands and ends in Antigua. The fact that he didn't have a team, didn't have a boat, and didn't even really know what to expect didn't stop him from going for it. If you've ever wondered what it takes to prepare and what kind of obstacles they could face during such a journey then this ones for you! Tweet us and let us know what you think of this episode! @illuminecollect

Dein Thomas Reich

Michelle Lee is a record-holding solo rower known for her crossing of the mighty Atlantic Ocean during the Talisker Atlantic Challenge, an annual ocean-rowing race. The sports' fanatic loves a challenge and lives by the motto: “Dare to say yes!”, which is why she launched herself headfirst into tackling the 5000km long journey - solo and unassisted. But before that she had to learn how to row. She did that by taking on a world record - to become the fastest woman to row 1 million metres, on a Concept 2 rowing machine. Listen to Michelle's story, her epic adventure and what's next for this inspiring Aussie.
