According to national statistics, an estimated 9% of the U.S. population will have an eating disorder in their lifetime. This week (Feb. 26-Mar 3) is Eating Disorder Awareness Week and there are a lot of misconceptions around the topic. We tackle the truth about the issue and how to get help with Quinnipiac associate professor, Clotilde Dudley-Smith. Dudley-Smith has presented at the National Teaching Professors Conference on Education and Prevention of Eating Disorders in College Students. She has written for peer-reviewed journals on the topic of anorexia nervosa and risk of exercise. She received grant funding for Interdisciplinary research on eating disorders. The grant enabled research on the education and prevention of eating disorders in college students. She has also been a member and co-leader of the education division of the International Association of Eating Disorders' Connecticut chapter. Picture courtesy of Clotilde Dudley-Smith

Content Warning: In this episode we touch on the subject of eating disorders and disordered eating patterns.Striving for nutritional perfection may seem appealing, but it can have negative consequences. In today's episode we dive deep in to orthorexia: what it is, how we come to adopt obsessive eating behaviors, and how awareness can help us bring more moderation into our pursuit of health.3:15 Orthorexia was first identified in 1998 and is an unhealthy obsession with eating only "clean" or "healthy" foods. It's characterized by an extreme fixation on the quality and purity of one's diet, often at the expense of overall well-being.4:20 We talk through our personal experiences with orthorexia and the circumstances behind our own experience with taking health too far.8:39 Orthorexia impacts our social life, mental health, and physical well-being and can lead to restrictive eating patterns, fear of certain foods, and an intense need for control over one's diet. Individuals with orthorexia tend to prioritize the perceived healthiness of their food choices rather than aiming to lose weight or achieve thinness, as is the case with other eating disorders.11:30 Is trending towards an extreme a typical part of a wellness journey? We discuss, with nuance, if extreme behaviors are part of a fitness cycle and how we've experienced this in our own lives.17:58 We talk through risk factors for orthorexia and social factors related to the prevalence of orthorexia. The “clean eating” movement plays a role.23:55 The worst advice we've given in the past while in our phase of extreme behaviors. Kate shares her previous fear of grains and Michael shares his previous belief in fasted green tea.26:00 The physical consequences of orthorexia shouldn't be underestimated. People may begin by adopting restrictive diets or eliminating certain food groups. However, as the obsession intensifies, it can result in malnutrition, weight loss, anxiety, and even depression.28:24 We talk through our perspective on how we can support individuals through fear around social eating while they are on their journey towards improving eating habits.32:52 A recent study discovered that 49% of individuals following healthy eating accounts on Instagram met the criteria for orthorexia. Even higher percentages are found in athletes, women, and college students.35:15 Orthorexia is not found in the DSM-5, but it is gaining more attention.36:00 We talk through our current experience with social media and how we use it as inspiration or motivation. We discuss if the overwhelm of information from social media can contribute to extreme behaviors.41:55 How can we navigate this world of orthorexia? Changing the narrative in the fitness industry is also essential. External support from a professional may be necessary, and that starts with bringing some awareness to our current approach to health and recognizing if there are extremes at play.Due to limited space in show notes, email for references and resources: kate@katelymannutrition.comDon't miss future episodes! In February this year, ABC dedicated their flagship investigative report, Four Corners, to eating disorders. This was, in part, because of a few Members of Parliament. The MPs are Teal Independent Zoe Daniel, Liberal Andrew Wallace and Labor's Susan Templeman. Based on continuous calls for help from their constituents, the three resolved to act for change. To start, they're co-chairing a new Parliamentary Friends Group for Eating Disorder Awareness to highlight the critical need for more care and support. “We've been absolutely avalanched in my office by families and people from across the country, saying that it really needs action,” says Zoe Daniel. “And it's been interesting to have conversations with other MPs. Eating disorders aren't confined to the stereotypical groups.” Susan Templeman agrees. “I don't think there's an elected office in the country where someone hasn't phoned in at the end of their tether, saying, I don't know what to do. My son or my daughter or my partner is suffering from an eating disorder, and I can't get the help that I need.” Andrew Wallace was once in a Cabinet meeting where a senior health official assured the Prime Minister that Australia was getting on top of the issue. “I said, sorry, Prime Minister, but I totally disagree with what you've just been told,” he recalls. “We have absolutely no idea how you first suffer from it, why you suffer from it and, importantly, how you best treat it.” As a carer, Wallace speaks from his own experience, as does Susan Templeman. Eating disorders are mental health issues that do not discriminate. And as more policymakers lean in to educate their political peers, the more hope there will be for real investment in care.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jessie Diggins: Eating Disorder Awareness, Media, and Why What to Say Matters

Heading into the Olympics in February, Jessie Diggins received more media attention than ever before, landing on the cover of Sports Illustrated and having her profile featured on major news outlets like the New York Times. There was an entire category for her career highlights on the Olympic cross country ski tab on NBC's Peacock streaming platform. From all of the coverage focused on Diggins surrounding the Games, one comment in particular received attention and push back from the athlete community. The line in a February 8th story in the NY Times suggested that Diggins looked “like a sprite in her racing suit,” comparing her body to her competitors' who had “massive shoulders and thighs.” It was seen as inaccurate, inappropriate, and potentially harmful to those reading it. To discuss the topic of body comments in sports journalism and why they might be harmful in the broader scope of athlete mental health, the Nordic Nation podcast recently hosted a discussion among the panel of Rosie Brennan, Corrine Malcolm, Brian Metzler, and Nat Herz, who span the breadth of athlete and media representative. Following the conversation, FasterSkier received feedback that the topic had already been given enough attention, and it remained clear that there was not unanimous understanding of why commenting on athletes' bodies was deemed problematic. Seeking to add clarity to this side of the story, along with her own perspective as someone who has experienced an eating disorder and since become an advocate for awareness and support in that realm, Diggins reached out to FasterSkier asking to add her voice to the conversation. To be clear, neither Diggins nor FasterSkier aims to “cancel” NY Times author Matthew Futterman, nor to attack the NY Times for running the comment. The purpose of this discussion was to consider how a comment on an athlete's body might be triggering to a reader who is primed to fall into the eating disorder trap, and how writers, parents, coaches, and teachers can be mindful of the impact and importance of what they say. Diggins also reflects on the 2021/2022 race season and what was an historic string of Olympic appearances. She discusses the success of the US Ski Team as a whole, in particular, the younger generation of athletes like Novie McCabe, Sophia Laukli, Ben Ogden, JC Schoonmaker, and Gus Schumacher, who have transitioned onto the World Cup over the last two seasons and earned spots on the 2022 Olympic Team.  Thanks for listening.Additional Resources and Related Reading & Listening:WithAll Foundation and the What to Say Campaign. #110 - Jane was born and raised in London, in what can only be described as a very ‘normal' household, with four siblings, and a mum and dad, who quite simply, adored each other, and still do! There was always a pet of some kind in their household. Nothing remarkable happened, certainly no great traumas, yet, at the age of 11, Jane developed a serious eating disorder. It wasn't until age 35, that Jane got a handle on recovery, thanks in no small part, to the best dog to ever walk the planet – a beautiful, soulful, rescue bulldog named Crystal. That special dog taught Jane the true meaning of unconditional love and gave her the courage to join life again. The endless cycle of hospital admissions stopped, and for the last 15 years Jane has worked in the field of mental health and substance misuse, campaigning for better services, developing projects to challenge stigma, and educate people about mental illness. Jane is passionate about a fairer welfare system for low-income families, and she is currently employed by a wonderful organization which helps people access financial and emotional support, as well as practical services. Jane's main ‘love' in life, outside of her work, is and always has been, animals. She spends every moment of her spare time with her crazy greyhound, Daisy.  Jane also enjoys reading, watching ‘rubbish' TV, and spending time with her family. Our HostsLinda and John (Jack) Mazur wrote the book, Emilee-The Story of a Girl and Her Family Hijacked by Anorexia, https://www.amazon.com/Emilee-Story-Family-Hijacked-Anorexia/dp/170092012X to honor their daughter's wish, to raise awareness, evoke compassion, and foster change in how eating disorders are viewed and treated. REBUIDING, REDEFNING, REDISCOVERING - 3 R's to Eating Disorder RecoveryJoined again by the wonderful Joss Walden (@honeyareyouhappy) – psychology graduate, recovered anorexic, avid charity worked and mental health & eating disorder awareness advocate.Joss has curated somewhat of a theory – 3 distinct stages within eating disorder recovery. These being the processes of rebuilding, redefining and rediscovering. In this mini-series, each episode will explore the individual categories, breaking them down and providing insight based on our experiences and unique perspectives… hopefully inspiring you on your own recovery journey. In this fist episode, we discuss the multiple definitions of rebuilding and it's facilitative influence in establishing the initial motivation to sustainably embark upon your recover journey. We discuss the prospect of rebuilding our bodies, our relationship with food, mindset, perspectives, and thus the lifestyle transformation and transition into a healthier routine. The value of identifying triggers is highlighted, and the overall priority to work from the foundation. Rather than solely focusing upon rectifying symptoms, this will allow you to metaphorically open a door to truly initiate an organic recovery. Despite the anxiety inducing nature of this and the feelings of vulnerability and exposure, this will allow you to step forward and almost allow you to regain a sense of clarity and control. Also, we note that recovery can't be successful if it's influenced solely externally. Recovery truly begins when you've decided to take those integral steps internally. Not when it's enforced upon you by others. You need to make that choice. You need to be intrinsically motivated to pursue this journey for your overall health, wellbeing and life progression.Again, in terms of rebuilding, we focus on rebuilding a routine and consistency within recovery and rebuilding a social network to support you along your journey. Throughout this episode, the topic of internal resilience is raised, our experiences with hospitalisation and inpatient stays, weight restoration, healing anxiety around food, challenging fear foods, how eating disorders thrive in secrecy and the value of being vulnerable.
