Episode 539 - Beau L'Amour - Son of best selling novelist Louis L'Amour, Striving to maintain a legacyAdvancing A LegacyBeau L'Amour is a writer and entertainment industry jack-of-all-trades. He is the son of best selling novelist Louis L'Amour and has managed his father's literary estate since 1988. Striving to maintain that legacy, he has done editorial work, revised unfinished manuscripts, managed a literary magazine and an audio/radio drama series, done art direction, been a comic book writer and producer and become an expert in marketing. In the years since his father passed away L'Amour has helped sell over 120 million books, nearly 5 million audio programs and placed a number of books of short stories (out of 16 posthumous collections) on the Best Seller lists.Beau is known for his Audio Publishing, Motion Picture Production & Book Publishing. Beau L'Amour was born in Los Angeles, California. His father was Louis L'Amour, a well known author of magazine and paperback fiction. His mother was Katherine Adams, the daughter of a silent movie actress and a southern California real estate developer.Throughout a good deal of his youth Beau lived in West Hollywood, an unincorporated section of Los Angeles county, known as a center of counter-culture and beatnik life. He grew up surrounded by his parents eclectic and eccentric group of friends; Austrian philosophers, American Indians, FBI agents, members of the Hollywood Ten, Eastern European refugees, Thai aristocracy, mysteriously talented dealers in primitive art and a wide array of writers, from Ray Bradbury to Jim Thompson.Beau attended West Hollywood Elementary School. In 1973 his family moved to West Los Angeles where he attended Emerson Junior High and University High School. After a year at Santa Monica College he went on to earn his BFA at California Institute of the Arts under the mentorship of director Alexander Mackendrick and illustrator and pioneering digital animator Ed Emshwiller. He also studied acting with Janet Alhanti and Harry Mastergeorge, and directing at UCLA with Ted Post.https://beaulamour.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

“I think he's in both Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11!” - Chris, on Heston's sequel policy On this week's episode, we're going back to, well, Earth, to chat about the fun-as-hell sequel, Beneath the Planet of the Apes! How silly was it to make James Franciscus look exactly like Charlton Heston, instead of just having him play Taylor? How much of a total jerk is Dr. Zaius? Are these under-dwellers wearing those masks for outsiders only or what? How great are Zira and Cornelius as characters? And how fantastic is it to watch a big, Hollywood, sci-fi sequel and the movie's totally unconcerned with setting up the next one? PLUS: Never agree to follow Taylor in traffic, because he's gonna blow down the road and leave you in the dust! Beneath the Planet of the Apes stars James Franciscus, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, Linda Harrison, James Gregory, David Watson, Don Pedro Colley, Natalie Trundy, Thomas Gomez, Jeff Corey, Victor Bruno, Paul Richards, and Charlton Heston as Colonel George Taylor; directed by Ted Post. The 2GuysTalking All You Can Eat Podcast Buffet - Everything We've Got - Listen Now!

In 1968, an already 38-year-old Clint Eastwood was made a producer of a movie that was going to be the "bridge" back to the states when it came to the Spaghetti Westerns and Hollywood's at-all interest in the modern Western Feature film. A number of years later, a young 8 year old Canadian kid dreamt of becoming a lawman. Later, he did, and at the center of that grand vision was the aforementioned bridge feature film. It's title is Hang 'Em High - 1968, directed by Ted Post, starring Clint Eastwood and a robust cast of Hollywood talent that is likely almost as long as this podcast. The sun is high on the horizon and the time to Hang 'Em High, with the help of a podcast host and four life-long lawmen hailing from a variety of parts of North America. Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, James Garner and Verna herself, Marcia Gay Harden, join Eastwood for one of the best high concepts Eastwood ever got his hands on; only a group of old guys can go into space and fix a satellite. Perfect concept! How is the execution? Then we dig into 1973's Magnum Force, the first of numerous and unnecessary sequels to the brilliant Dirty Harry. Does having a bunch of uniformed cops taking the law into their own hands absolve Harry of his actions in Dirty Harry? Or does it weirdly confirm the unfair fascist complaints of the original while trying to undo them? TV journeyman Ted Post directs with some juicy conflict behind the scenes.

This week we kick off the season of giving with a pair of stone cold classics... of varying recognition. First up, Ted Post finished his stellar 1973 with one of the greatest reveals in film history with the terrible tale of The Baby. A young, recently bereaved social worker is assigned to the case of Baby, the family is not happy with this meddlesome busybody, and her mother-in-law just wants her new pool finished. Then we discuss one of cinema's most charismatic performers, James Cagney, in his breakout role. Tom Powers has a very Dickensian childhood, so who could blame him for growing up to be The Public Enemy. All that and Dave just doesn't remember the 48-hour worst movie marathon, Kevin subjects his wife to cruel pictures, and Tyler plots from the shadows... from some VERY French shadows. Join us, won't you?Episode 131- Infantile Adversary

On this episode, Andrew Graves and Rich Johnson stumble about the nursery in dirty nappies and childishly try to make some sort of sense of Ted Post’s oddly chaotic 70s exploitation flick, The Baby. Noted for its offbeat nature and culter than cult status, it’s a film which is both charming, alarming and horrific. Dealing with themes of motherhood, control and the abuse of power it really is a movie which needs to be seen to be believed. But is it a schlocky slice of late twentieth century horror cheese or is it trying to relay some deeper feminist vibe? The pair will also introduce brand new feature Charity Chainsaw and answer listener questions in Mail from the Crypt. THERE WILL BE SPOILERS!

"May the blessing of the Bomb Almighty and the fellowship of the Holy Fallout descend on us all this day and forevermore." With the success of the first Planet of the Apes film, 20th Century Fox rushed a sequel into production, something that was usually reserved for b-run serials. That first film, however, was a good crossover property – it had the genre elements but was made on an A-list level. That gave Fox the confidence that a sequel could work. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Planet of the Apes series with Ted Post's 1970 film, Beneath the Planet of the Apes. We talk about how well this film works – or doesn't – as a followup to the first film and why it still stands out as a fun film to watch, at least for Andy. We look at how the story became what it was and why it ended up getting made at the budget level it was. We chat about our many problems with the story and debate if they're intrinsic to the script or were partially caused by the lack of a budget. We chat about the cast – notably the new faces of James Franciscus, James Gregory, David Watson and the actors playing the underground mutants – and look at what they're bringing to the table. We discuss the film's messages and wonder if any of them are as strongly portrayed as the ones in the first film. And we deliberate on the crew, particularly the camerawork of Milton R. Krasner and the music of Leonard Rosenman, not to mention the mutant faces created by John Chambers. It's an interesting entry into the franchise and certainly leaves us wondering how they can make a sequel. Regardless, it's a fun one to talk about, so tune in to this week's show! Back in 1973, veteran TV and feature film director Ted Post helmed The Baby, a film written by playwright and occasional film & TV writer Abe Polsky. The Baby tells the story of a social worker assigned to check in on a most unusual case: a grown man living in a crib with the emotional and intellectual capacity of an infant. The eccentric plot, bizarre characters, twist ending, and classic seventies kitsch motivated writer / director Dan Spurgeon to adapt Polsky’s script into a play with a little more camp value and grindhouse qualities. Spurgeon’s bawdy play, which remains very faithful to the characters and Polsky’s plotting, debuted in Los Angeles in 2013 with actor Frank Blocker playing the venomous matriarch Mama. Currently running at Toronto’s Storefront Theatre until November 1st, The Baby retains several members from the original L.A. production, and in this month’s podcast I spoke with writer / director Dan Spurgeon and star Frank Blocker about the impressionable film, the play’s genesis and creation, Blocker’s clever interpretation of Mama, bad seventies music, and slight differences in L.A. and Toronto audiences. Also available: reviews of the 2015 Toronto production + the Severin Films Blu-ray of the original 1973 feature film.   If you enjoyed this podcast, connect with us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. Derek is joined by Scott Morris as they both tumble through a Hasslein Curve and find themselves landing squarely in 1970 (or is it 3955?) to discuss the film Beneath the Planet of the Apes (dir. Before diving into the film itself, Scott and Derek talk about what went on behind the scenes to produce (unearth?) this movie in the first place.
