Clay interviews Beau L'Amour, the son of Louis L'Amour, the celebrated author of multi-million best-selling Westerns. Beau L'Amour is the manager of his father's literary estate. By his passing at 80 in 1988, Louis L'Amour wrote just under 100 novels and more than 250 short stories. All of his books are still in print. Clay and Beau talked about changing views of the frontier, white-Native relations, and the role of violence in the American West. How well does Louis L'Amour hold up in our culturally sensitive time? Beau L'Amour is currently revisiting his father's novels and providing afterwords in the books, sharing the backstory of their creation, their connection to film and television, and their place in the larger achievement of the famous author. Louis L'Amour, more than 30 years after his death, still ranks every year among the top 50 most popular writers in the world. You can read Clay's essay about his talk with Beau L'Amour here. Their conversation was recorded on March 17, 2025.

With over 300 million books sold, Louis L'Amour is one of the bestselling authors of all time. All 120 of his books remain in print. But the greatest story L'Amour ever penned was his own. He spent the early part of his life traveling in a circus, working as a lumberjack and miner, circling the world as a seaman, winning over 50 fights as a professional boxer, and serving in WWII.Today on the show, I talk about both the personal and professional aspects of Louis' life with his son, Beau L'Amour. We discuss some of Louis' adventures and the autodidactic education he gave himself by way of a voracious reading habit. We then turn to how Louis got started as a writer and how he cut his teeth writing for pulp magazines before breaking through as a Western novelist and becoming a blockbuster success in his sixties.Resources Related to the PodcastLouis L'Amour works mentioned in the show:Education of a Wandering Man: A MemoirHondoYonderingNo Traveller ReturnsThe Walking DrumLast of the BreedLouis L'Amour's Lost Treasures, Volume 1 and Volume 2"Holding Her Down" by Jack LondonAoM Article: How and Why to Become a Lifelong LearnerAoM Article: The Libraries of Famous Men — Louis L'AmourConnect With Beau L'AmourThe Louis L'Amour websiteBeau's website

I don't remember if it was my first visit to the public library, a Carnagie Public Library of course, but it was definitely the first time I strayed away from the children's section and started looking for books to read. The adult side of the library was very different. No cartoon covers in bright colors, just rows and rows of big fat books, they all looked the same. And they all looked like they were more than I could handle. But then I found them. They were in their own section. Rows and rows of small little paperbacks with colorful covers and images of … cowboys. The authors name on the books was Louis L'amour and they were my first foray into adult fiction.I read them all, and loved every minute of it. I still have an old copy of The Daybreakers laying around somewhere in the house.I grew up towards the end of the Western era in Hollywood, Bonanza and Gunsmoke were still on TV, but they would be gone very soon replaced with shows like Kojak and MASH. The westerns of the decade spent more time deconstructing the genre then telling western stories and John Wayne's last film the Shootist hit box offices in 1976.Many of you out there look at the western as an outdated genre, one that has little place in the hustle and bustle of 21st century storytelling. And of course, when it comes to roleplaying nobody is playing a western, right…Right?Well, we are here to point out that you are likely playing a western and don't realize it. Just like with our Sci-Fi episode where we determined that almost everything in roleplaying could be considered Sci-Fi. I would argue that almost every story our table top roleplaying games are telling is a western. The importance of the western can not be understated. The mythic and timeless stories are tied closely into the three pillars of roleplaying; Social, Exploration, and Combat. While I can go on for hours about Westerns, Mike, you never really got into the western. When did you recognize how tied in it was to most rolelplaying games.

These are the biggest surprises, mostly good ones, that I got in the second half of 2023. Since I'm going back and editing the livestream I shared with my Facebook group, Heaven Citizens, I get to make an important correction. One of the books on the list was not in front of me; in fact, I never actually bought it in the first place. And since I didn't see it, I skipped over it. So if you actually counted down with me, you may have noticed there were only nine slots mentioned instead of ten. The book I omitted was “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson. Actually I read it while standing there in the clearance section. As I go on to mention with a couple of other books that appear on the list, I wish I'd just ponied up the $2 or whatever and bought it. Check out the Whining episode from a few months ago for my thoughts. A terrific allegory on a very important subject — staying motivated when the breaks don't go our way. Anyway, with that out of the way, here's the list. Enjoy. 10. Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson9. The Messiah Book, by Peter Jacobi8. Passover, by David Mamet; and Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, by T.S. Eliot7. Dandelion Wine, by Ray Bradbury6. The Joe Shuster Story, by Julian Voloj and Thomas Campi5. "Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on." --Louis L'Mour In this episode, Judy and I discuss the exciting task of beginning writing or starting a new journal. We both, however, have a collection of journals and notebooks that we've used to keep our thoughts or record progress toward a goal. Some of them are finished and have no blank pages left. Others will never ever be complete. We talk about what to do when you start a new journal and we get into the problem of unfinished notebooks and the decision to let blank pages stay blank. Then we wrap up our discussion with a brainstorming session on "touchstones" that we plan to use when beginning a new journal. Howdy friends!Instagram: happilybookedpodcastFacebook: Happily Booked Podcast Email: happilybookedpodcast@gmail.com (Anything non-podcast related and/or inappropriate will be reported)Tik Tok: happilybookedpodcastAs always, we are so glad to be able to have our podcast fun and chat away like crazy on Mondays! We are honored that you lovely people want to listen to our rambles...okay, fine! You want to hear about books! But we're a rambly pair and if you ask us to change, you're asking for far too much! But in all seriousness, thank you so much for listening! We (we as in Brooke) trailed off a good bit in this episode, so brace yourselves! There is one spot in this episode where we are chatting about a certain book and accidentally drop the name of one of our dear pals. We did our best to edit it out for privacy reasons seeing as we have not confirmed with this person if it was alright to say her name! So you will probably be able to hear when the slip-up happened as we go from talking calmly to giggling like fools! Oh well! We are who we are. Also, from the time we recorded this episode to its publishing (today, 9/05/22), we gained a wonderful listener from "across the pond" in Europe! Hello friend!! We are so honored you chose to download two of our episodes! Much love to ya! But we wanted to apologize because in this recording we did not have you as a listener just yet and there is a moment we mentioned some other fun locations that we are being downloaded in. We apologize and will rectify that, not in the next episode, but in the one after in Ep. 6! For some unknown reason, I said the author of The Dewberry Farm Mysteries was a "Katherine". That was entirely incorrect, that cozy mystery series is written by a KAREN MacInerney! I apologize for the confusion that I am putting out into the world. Alright, I believe that was all! Below are the treasured show notes! Thanks again for listening and enjoy!P.S.- The movie The Passengers is not as creepy as Brooke makes it out to be. :)10:05 - The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins10:20 - The Wolf and The Woodsman by Ava Reid 10:55 - The Dewberry Farm Mysteries by Karen MacInerney12:30 - Currently Reading Podcast - https://www.currentlyreadingpodcast.com/13:35 - Caron One Pound Acrylic Yarn 14:14 - Psych Tv Show (2006)17:06 - Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone by J.
