Today is the 5th Trading Day of January, and as go the first five days of the year, so goes the month of January, and so goes the rest of the year...according to the January Barometer. We are in the middle of the January Barometer: If markets close higher today, we will have successfully created a positive first-five-days-of-the-year. But just barely. Note: We failed the Santa Claus Rally, we are threatening to close lower today (Dow Futures are down during this recording), and today's result will trigger the second leg of the January Barometer. HOWEVER: In 2024, we had a negative First Five Days of January, we had a negative January and had a whopper year. Tuesday's market action did not really resonate with the JOLTS Survey; something else was afoot, because stocks sold off hard, bonds sold off hard, for a day of no safe asset across the board. Santa did not visit Broad & Wall over the holidays, which was a bit of a disappointment. Markets did have a nice enough rally on Friday, but it was about a half percent shy of achieving "Santa Claus Rally" status. What does that mean for the year? Typically, three elements: A Santa Clause Rally, the first five days of January, and the full month of January; these are predictors of performance for the rest of the year. But these indicators aren't always correct. Our watchwords for 2025: Curb your expectations. Where is the Santa Clause Rally and why isn't it here yet? What is here however, is drones! Today we talk about the current events including drone sightings and assassinations. We highlight the lack of transparency in politics, corporate media, and Wall Street - there definitely needs to be critical thinking. We also address the "Santa Claus rally" phenomenon since it could be anecdotal as it lacks consistent data. We talk bullish market trends, year-end tax-loss selling, and being mindful of market seasonality and timing. Today we discuss... High-profile events and media narratives around it. The wealth concentrated around Washington, D.C., highlighting systemic corruption. The "Santa Claus rally" phenomenon and its historical market impact. Analysis of seasonal market trends, including tax-loss harvesting and year-end buying opportunities. Observations on the rise of 401(k) millionaires, with caution about potential biases in data reporting. The Euphorometer shows that the stock market's current euphoria level is the highest in the last 30 years, warranting caution. Despite some bearish signals, the market is generally bullish with strong momentum. Foreign holdings of U.S. assets are at historic highs, signaling confidence in the U.S. economy. Job numbers are showing some signs of softness, which requires monitoring. Investors need a clear plan, whether it's buy-and-hold or other strategies, and should stick with it through market fluctuations. Consumer bullishness is at odds with expectations for income growth, creating divergence in sentiment. The stock market's sentiment is very strong, but investors should be cautious of potential over-optimism. The idea of having a flexible plan for market shifts, especially around year-end, is highlighted. The 60/40 portfolio model is becoming outdated as it struggles to balance volatility in bullish times. Momentum investing has its risks, as trends can change unexpectedly. The U.S. deficit is rising rapidly, with projections suggesting a $3.5 trillion deficit. Inflation-adjusted home prices are at historical highs, with housing prices showing significant growth since the late 90s. The income needed to afford a home has nearly doubled over the past decade, limiting demand. Despite challenges in the housing market, stock market expectations remain high, driven by hope rather than data. Ryan Herbert explains the concept of the Santa Claus rally, a phenomenon where stock markets typically see a rise during the end-of-year holiday season. However, he cautions against getting too excited about these short-term gains, especially for those managing significant investments. Ryan discusses the importance of having a solid, long-term financial plan that accounts for market volatility and potential downturns, rather than chasing small percentage gains that might not justify the risk. Using examples from recent market behaviors and economic uncertainties, he emphasizes the need for prudent decision-making and the dangers of impulsive investments. In this week's episode, the Money Wise guys dive into Wall Street's recent performance, highlighting the Dow's 1.8% drop, the S&P 500's modest 0.6% decline, and the NASDAQ's 0.3% gain. Year-to-date, the Dow remains up 16.3%, the S&P 500 has climbed 26.9%, and the NASDAQ continues to lead with a 32.7% increase. The discussion shifts to the recent seven-day losing streak for the Dow—something not seen since 2020—and explores how technical indicators show markets moving sideways since early December. Historically, the second full week of December has shown similar flat or negative trends, even during a strong secular bull market. The guys also delve into inflation, dissecting the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) reports. While inflation remains relatively sticky, with both measures ticking slightly higher, they explore key factors such as rising wages, which continue to outpace inflation-adjusted earnings for many workers. Housing inflation remains a significant contributor, with mortgage rates hovering above 6.5%, and the guys explain why rates need to dip closer to 6% to see substantial relief in the real estate market. Looking ahead, the group anticipates the Federal Reserve's next move and examines the potential tone for 2025. While markets initially expected aggressive rate cuts next year, expectations have tempered, signaling caution and limited reductions as the Fed remains data-dependent. To close, the conversation touches on broader economic and political dynamics, including the potential for a “Santa Claus rally” post-Christmas and the implications of upcoming policies as the nation approaches a new president. The 'Santa Claus Rally' The Santa Claus Rally refers to the tendency for the stock market to experience a rise during the final trading days of December and the first few days of January. This seasonal phenomenon is often attributed to a combination of factors, including year-end tax strategies, holiday optimism, increased retail investor activity, and institutional investors closing their books for the year. While not guaranteed, the rally has historically been seen as a positive signal for market sentiment heading into the new year, providing investors with a boost of confidence during the holiday season. In the second hour, the Money Wise guys explore RIA vs. Broker. You don't want to miss the details! Amazon (AMZN) and Apple (AAPL) continue to hit all-time highs, and Jonathan D. Corpina says both companies will win big this holiday season. He projects markets will go higher alongside each stock despite most indices trading at highs of their own. Jonathan says one hinderance to that growth will be if the Fed pauses rate cuts as the markets price one in. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. What should you anticipate for your market playbook as 2024 comes to an end? The S&P has continued its steady trend along the 20-DMA, with a few tests of the 50- and 100-DMA's along the way. While we have had very low volatility this year, we're expecting a bit of a correction between the 8th and the 15th of the month. Likely nothing dramatic, just back to the 20-DMA. After that, portfolio managers will begin the process known as "window dressing:" putting the best possible performers on their books for positive year-end results. That will likely trigger a "Santa Claus Rally" into the first five days of January. CFRA's Sam Stovall believes December's due for another rally, and while there could be a correction next year he reveals a 2025 Year-End Target of $6585 for the SPX. His team has set a 2.4% GDP growth estimate in 2025, keeping the case for a "soft landing" intact. He does point to valuations trading at lofty levels, and believes a correction could be helpful. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.
