Summer phone season kicks off with Samsung's latest launch. Jake, Vee, and Allison talk about Samsung's new lineup of foldables, including the very thin new Z Fold 7 and Allison's disdain for the Z Flip 7 FE. Vee has impressions of Samsung's new Galaxy Watch 8 lineup and its squircle-y new redesign. Then, it's time to talk Big Tech shakeups. Apple's COO is leaving, Zuckerberg is buying himself an AI dream team, X's CEO is out — and its chatbot Grok is on a rampage. Finally, big things are in store for the Lightning Round… which shall henceforth be known as the THUNDER ROUND. Lots to talk about, including Lorde's CD problems, Apple's Liquid Glass changes, and HBO Max finally becoming HBO Max again. This week we try something a little different — the ⚡️THUNDER ROUND ⚡️ as Jeff Goldblum says in Jurassic Park Uno, “Your [science nerds] were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should!”In this special episode, Julian and Trace snagged every dinosaur related question we could fit in a shaving cream can. Then, like a couple of velociraptors in a kitchen we made a huge mess of things. There's a new Jurassic World movie, so we figured if not now — then when? Maybe people are going to go DINO-CRAZY! (we hope). If you have a Jurassic-leaning friend send them this episode; we spared no expense on it!QUESTIONSJulian:“How is it possible for the largest male dinosaurs to mount the females?” from Stephen“What if the dinosaurs were able to evolve further- would they have eventually gotten to "human" level brains/consciousness?” from Tori“What if dinosaurs weren't wiped out what would things be like?” from Sam“What if pterosaurs had survived the mass extinction that wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs?” from Adele“What would have happened if the meteor that caused dinosuars to go extinct never hit the earth?” from Steven“What would happen if a meteor hit a flat earth?” from TylerTrace:"If there had been an intelligent dinosaur species which evolved some civilization, would we able to detect it?" from Udo (?)“What does a dinosaur taste like?” from Pat”How likely would it be for something like Jurassic park to exist in the near future?” from MayaDo you have an absurd question? Maybe it's silly idea you had, a shower thought about the nature of reality, or a ridiculous musing about your favorite food? If you want an answer, no matter the question, tell us!HOW TO ASK A QUESTION

Not one but two AI baseball players infiltrate the viewer mail this week (and honestly, we hope more than you do that this marks the end of this nonsense). Outside of that, Ryan and Brian talk briefly about the Oscars (both the awards and the children), and rumble through a Thunder Round of this past week of #nytxw puzzles. The Fear the 'Fro podcast hits the road. Bob Schmidt, your host, is heading to OKC, but first we must talk Cavs. We discuss takeaways from the Cavs win over the Pacers, the zone defense, hit the cavspod.com audio mailbag as Bob's integrity is questioned, and celebrate a birthday boy and true "friend of the pod".

Where does literature rub up against the rest of pop culture? This episode, of course! Liz is back for the third episode in a row alongside returning player Amy Brundle and newcomer Kendal for a bookish extravaganza! We'll talk frequently adapted authors in round one before a mashup round two game that somehow both confirms our biases and stretch our horizons. But in which direction? We've arrived! It's the season seven finale to determine the next super mondo champion of champions! Sure, this game opens with a round based on sweaty wordplay, with round two building into a series metatextual mashup clues that combine multiple mediums. And yes, it culminates in a lightning round where the leaderboard is constantly shifting. But this is the finals, darnit, so returning champs Liz, Derek, and Matthew are all operating at a very high level, so the competition cannot be more tense. I had to stop writing this episode description to go pat myself down with a cool wet towel just from recalling how intense everything got. And I'm working from home today, so I forgot to put on Old Spice, so now the sweat has really cooked up a nasty stench in my general vicinity. And when it comes to straight up B.O., I wouldn't necessarily say that everyone loves their own brand
It's the last of our divisional finals! Who will be the third contestant to advance to the season championship match? Will it be Rob? Or Scott? Or Liz? Or maybe a fourth contestant will crash the record, chloroform the other contestants and stroll to a leisurely, unfulfilling victory leading to record low ratings that will, in short order, doom the podcast? Only one way to find out; ask a friend who listens. Episode Notes
The season seven playoffs roll on as Ross, Jon, and Derek square off to determine the winner of the Monster Division. We'll take a trip back in time to the community sports programs of our youths before going even further back in time to quiz about pop culture portrayals of Albert Einstein. They'll make you say "Yahoo!" Seriously. Round two asks our players to name pop culture properties based on the titles of the fictional books found within them. All of that, plus the customary but nonetheless vibrant and exciting, lightning round! Episode Notes
Don't tell Ryan, but this week, Rachel Fabi and Neville Fogarty break into the studio and coerce Brian into the longest episode of Fill Me In ever! And to make it even stranger, it has more puzzle content than usual ... and a lot of it is about cryptic crosswords! Neville gives a master class on cryptics at about the 44-minute mark, and the all-cryptic-crossword Thunder Round starts about 72 minutes in. The rest? Some Viewer Mail, some musical theater, very little baseball, and perhaps more laughter than you're accustomed to hearing on this show. The cryptics of this week's Thunder Round are (some of these require paid subscriptions): New Yorker (9/4) by Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon New York Times (9/4) by John Ewbank The Browser (9/4) by Nate Cardin AVCX (8/25) by Nate Cardin Out of Left Field (we don't actually delve into this one, but it was #127) by Joshua Kosman and Henry Picciotto Square Chase #17, "Heist," by Steve Mossberg Wall Street Journal, "Art Gallery" (8/27) by Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon Go solve them first if you don't want to be spoiled by the Thunder Round. After last episode's delightful diversion, we have arrived at the season seven playoffs. This week, Matthew, Dan, and Tim are all keen to become the winner of the Chronic Town division, but only ONE can do so, and advance to the season finale. In round one, we'll look at famous non-fiction books that have been adapted into scripted Hollywood movies, before going in the television wayback machine to mashup famous shows' pilot episodes that aired on the same day. And of course, it all comes down to the lightning round. Episode Notes
This week, Ryan and Brian conclude Season Seven without having achieved "the arc" (which was apparently to have made a movie?!) -- and Ben Zimmer shows up to talk us through the highlights of Lollapuzzoola from behind the scenes. It's a long show, and we considered cutting out the vegetable talk and the Thunder Round ... but Ben Zimmer makes everything better. He's like bacon that way. We're taking a break before the season seven playoffs for some very nerdy trivia with some special guests from the iFanboy podcast network! We were lucky enough to be joined by Josh Flanagan, Conor Kilpatrick, and their recurring guest and science-expert Dr. Ryan Haupt for a match tailored just for them! After a trip to Amity for a game of My Champion, we'll quiz about the history of the use of the famous 'morphing' effect across the history of movies and TV. In round two, we'll go DEEP into comic book lore with a round about early versions of superheroes we know from movies and TV. All this, plus an epic lightning round!Episode Notes
The last regulation episode of the season is upon us! This week, Scott, Seth, and Diana compete for the last spot in the season seven playoffs in the third elimination match of the Vancouver Rehearsal Tapes division. On the docket this week are games about real life commercial products popping up in pop culture, as well as telling us how to get to Sesame Street with a quiz about the parodies they've employed. All this, plus a lightning round! Our next episode is a special with three special guests from the iFanboy podcast network, and we'll be back two Mondays after that for the season seven playoffs! Episode Notes
Deb, Derek, and last minute fill-in, returning player Adam are ready to flex their pop culture knowledge this week! Round one is a carbo-loaded extravaganza of pop culture properties that have all been breadified, before round two dives into the unnecessary backstories of iconic characters. And it's all capped off with an exciting lightning round! Episode Notes
In this week's edition of Stocks and Sports, we'll kick things off with the results from last episode's poll question as well as this week's new one! Then, we'll do the fan-favorite Thunder Round, with stocks including Peloton and Teladoc! In the sports section, I'll share my take on what the future holds for college sports!
