We're talking about some of the topics in Amy Wilson's new book HAPPY TO HELP. Get it in our Bookshop bookstore, or wherever you buy books! Ask most people if women are "just better" at multitasking, and they'll probably agree. Didn't some study say that at some point? Aren't women from Venus and men from Mars? Aren't our brains completely different? Here's what the research really says about multitasking. Turns out we may have been bamboozled into doing more work all this time WITHOUT being any better at it. Amy and Margaret discuss: Why multitasking feels good sometimes Why women may be better at it only because they have more practice How attempting to multitask actually makes us less productive Here are links to some of the resources mentioned in the episode: D. Do you ever try focusing on just one thing at a time? What's one way you avoid distractions? Today, Jay's diving into a struggle we all know too well: distraction. If you've ever found yourself scrolling on your phone without even thinking about it, you're definitely not alone. Jay breaks down why it's so hard to stay focused in a world full of constant notifications and packed schedules. But this episode isn't about making us feel guilty—instead, it's about giving us simple, doable strategies to actually make focus easier. Jay's packed this episode with practical tips, like creating “no-phone zones” at home and setting tech-free times during the day to really be present. One of the standout strategies he shares is the Pomodoro Technique—working in short, focused bursts with breaks in between to keep your brain sharp and productive. Jay's main message? Real productivity isn't about doing more, faster—it's about doing things better. He even shares some unique Ayurvedic advice, like chewing each bite 32 times (yes, really!) to emphasize how slowing down can improve our lives. In this episode, you'll learn: How to Slow Down for Better Productivity How to Stay Present in Conversations How to Find Calm by Unplugging How to Build Stronger Focus Habits How to Reclaim Your Attention By setting intentional boundaries, slowing down, and practicing mindfulness, we can take back our attention in a way that enhances productivity, deepens our relationships, and brings peace to our daily lives. When you multitask, you do a bunch of things poorly and slowly. Instead, do one thing. Do it well and finish it. In the long run, you're going to get more done more quickly. Take the time it takes to get one thing done. If you try to get everything done, you may get nothing done. The MNLU-Pro dataset is a more robust and challenging massive multi-task language understanding dataset that's tailored to more rigorously benchmark large language models' capabilities. The Composable Interventions framework allows researchers to study the effects of using multiple interventions on a language model, and the order in which interventions are applied can have a significant impact on their effectiveness. The MJ-Bench benchmark evaluates the effectiveness of different types of multimodal judges in providing feedback for text-to-image generation models, and the experiments reveal that close-source VLMs generally provide better feedback. The Associative Recurrent Memory Transformer (ARMT) is an approach that combines transformer self-attention for local context with segment-level recurrence for storage of task-specific information distributed over a long context, and it sets a new performance record in the recent BABILong multi-task long-context benchmark. Multi-Task, Reality, Shock Jock BONUS CONTENT: Things Chris Says, Reality Follow-up, 2000th Podcast Review Quotes: “Then you'll be sorry!” “On the rock is not just hearing The Word but doing it.” “Focus on the person in front of you.” “Reality is what hits you when you're wrong.”
Simultaneous speech-to-speech translation (Simul-S2ST, a.k.a streaming speech translation) outputs target speech while receiving streaming speech inputs, which is critical for real-time communication. Beyond accomplishing translation between speech, Simul-S2ST requires a policy to control the model to generate corresponding target speech at the opportune moment within speech inputs, thereby posing a double challenge of translation and policy. In this paper, we propose StreamSpeech, a direct Simul-S2ST model that jointly learns translation and simultaneous policy in a unified framework of multi-task learning. Adhering to a multi-task learning approach, StreamSpeech can perform offline and simultaneous speech recognition, speech translation and speech synthesis via an"All-in-One"seamless model. Experiments on CVSS benchmark demonstrate that StreamSpeech achieves state-of-the-art performance in both offline S2ST and Simul-S2ST tasks. Besides, StreamSpeech is able to present high-quality intermediate results (i.e., ASR or translation results) during simultaneous translation process, offering a more comprehensive real-time communication experience. 2024: Shaolei Zhang, Qingkai Fang, Shoutao Guo, Zhengrui Ma, Min Zhang, Yang Feng https://arxiv.org/pdf/2406.03049

And while our world tells us that we can do many things at the same time, the fact is we cannot. Multitasking? Yes. Multifocusing? No. That's what Dr. Chris and Robyn Bruggeman discuss in this episode of Ignition. Enjoy!

It's pretty common these days to have to tackle several things at once, like responding to an email while on a work call. Our constant pursuit of productivity leads us to mix various activities simultaneously, whether it's at work, home, or even at school for kids. This blending of at least two tasks at the same time is commonly known as multitasking. When you focus on something that you're doing or creating, the frontal lobes of both halves of your brain communicate. But trying to pull off two things at once shows that things operate differently. How so? Does it also depend on the nature of the tasks? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: Could Britain ever rejoin the EU? Hello listeners and welcome back to The Career Woman's Secret Playbook Podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Dawn, CEO/Founder of Dr. Dawn ShopTalk and today we're tackling a topic that is often times seen as a critical skill in the workplace – multitasking. We all know it's important to be able to multi-task well, but how do we do it without spreading ourselves too thin, getting overwhelmed and ultimately hurting the quality of our work and our peace of mind? THAT is what today's episode is all about and if you follow these 7 steps, and in this order, you will be on your way!Step #1: Prioritize with Purpose – the key to successful multi-tasking is to know your priorities. Take a moment to identify your most critical goals/tasks for the week, month and even year.Step #2: Create a Master Schedule – once you know your priorities, it's now time to create a master schedule so that you can create blocks of time to get it all done.Step #3: Batch Similar Tasks – an efficient way to do this is to batch tasks that are similar (return emails at one time of day; phone calls at another time, for example). That way, your brain doesn't have to switch from one type of activity to another.Step #4: Set Boundaries – Make sure you let colleagues, family and friends know when you need focused uninterrupted time.Step #5: Embrace Technology Wisely – use technology to your advantage instead of letting it distract and interrupt you.Step #6: Practice Mindfulness – take a mental break by incorporating mindful meditations and exercises throughout your workday.Step #7: Learn to Say No – saying no to something that is not aligned with your goals or is just something you don't have time to get to is saying YES to yourself.Tune in to today's episode to get ALL the details about these steps and you too will be able to multi-task WITHOUT spreading yourself too thin and feeling overwhelmed. How well can you multi-task?Contact: investmentbankinginsights@gmail.com
I think multitasking has gotten a bad rap these days. Sure, some forms of multitasking are downright foolish: Texting while driving can be deadly. Mindlessly munching on junk food while watching TV is bad for your waistline. But aside from a handful of ill-advised pairings like the ones mentioned above, I've always thought multitasking makes a lot sense. I wouldn't be able to accomplish half of the things I do without doubling up at times. So in this week's episode of Loving Life at Home, I'm sharing 10 of my favorite ways to multitask. VERSES CITED: - Psalm 90:12 - "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." - Proverbs 31:27 - "She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." RELATED ARTICLE: - 5-Minute Task List - many of these quick chores can be done while listening to audiobooks or podcasts or while waiting for water to boil or a bathtub to fill or food to cook, etc.
