In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia continue Keanu Reeves Month by looking back at the 2013 Chinese-American martial arts film Man of Tai Chi. A young Chinese man named Tiger Chen is going through his every day life struggles making ends meet at his delivery job, supporting his family, and getting tai chi training with his master for a tournament. The CEO of a private security firm named Donaka Mark sees Tiger Chen on TV and sees potential in him recruiting him as a fighter in his illegal underground fight club. Tiger Chen accepts not knowing that he's been filmed secretly for millions of people tuning into his life and that he would be killed if he refuses to finish his opponents or if he loses a fight. An officer from the Hong Kong Police Department named Sun-Jing Shi investigates Donaka Mark to learn if he's the one responsible for the fight club and all the mysterious deaths and disappearances of people who were a part of the club. But due to lack of evidence, her superintendent tells her to drop the case. But Sun-Jing made a promise to one of the former fighters before he disappeared to uncover and stop Donaka's illegal underground fight club. When the movie premiered in theaters, it was a box office bomb making $5.5 million dollars out of a $25 million dollar budget. Critics had mixed to positive reviews calling it a "predictable, one note story", but praised the choreography and Keanu Reeves for both his acting and his first time directing a film. It's currently 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. What did Arun and Patricia think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/old-school-lane/support

Over the last 15 years, French stunt performer and martial artist Brahim Chab has jumped, kicked and punched his way into the upper echelons of the fight film business. In 2021, he wrapped on 'Monkey Man' - the directorial debut of actor, Dev Patel, which has been picked up by Netflix. The film, described as 'John Wick in Mumbai', sees Brahim provide fight choreography as well as acting in a supporting role. In 2020, he went toe-to-toe with his hero, Jackie Chan, in the globe-trotting actioner 'Vanguard'. It has been a career forged in blood, sweat, and determination; a career which has seen him relocate from Europe to Asia where he has worked consistently on productions across many countries, including Thailand, India, UK, China and the USA. He has worked with everyone: Tiger Chen in 'Man of Tai Chi'; Scott Adkins in 'Boyka: Undisputed'; Donnie Yen in 'Big Brother'; Mark Dacascos in 'The Driver'; Jean-Claude Van Damme in 'Pound of Flesh' and his still unreleased pet project, 'Frenchy'. Despite years of working in the industry, Brahim still remains hungry - pushing himself to achieve more, develop his craft, and work on bigger projects. We discuss what makes a good fight scene, the rudiments of 'tricking', learning on set with Tim Man, and how to make it in the action business. In this episode, we discuss Keanu’s embrace of East Asian legends and the free will of warriors in Man of Tai Chi (2013) and 47 Ronin (2013). Despite geographic similarities, the two films are wildly different in their storytelling and authenticity: whereas the former features Keanu taking a back seat to the world of Tiger Chen in his directorial debut filmed mostly in Chinese, the latter features Keanu artificially inserted into Japanese history. However, he plays characters in both films that are narratively marked as mixed, thus engaging with his own multiracial roots, and inspiring the title of the episode: kao, or warrior in Hawaiian.

For the third installment in our "Catching Up On Keanu" month, Trevor has Kyle sit down to watch the only film ever directed by Keanu Reeves, Man of Tai Chi (2013)! Starring longtime collaborator and friend of Keanu's, Tiger Chen, the film is a quaint, but technically sound action film that was seemingly built from the ground up to be a showcase of the at the time largely unknown Chen's martial arts ability. Featuring token appearance by several noteworthy martial arts actors, including Iko Uwais and Silvio Simac, the movie is a love letter to the genre that fails to break any new ground, but proudly justifies it's existence with the obvious signs of care and and commitment put forth by the lead actors and director. Tiger Chen, failing to emote but wowing with his tai chi prowess! Keanu Reeves, lookin' kind of stiff and making "ghost face" into the camera at random! Iko Uwais, in his least satisfying role this side of The Force Awakens!

He reveals how he, and the team, made a multi star cast action movie in the jungle and back streets of Thailand. What was it really like working with Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Scott Adkins + Michael Jai White & Michael Bisping & Jeenja Yanin & Tiger Chen & Celina Jade? How do you even begin to schedule them all in the same place at the same time? How do you film 9 key characters? How do you stop egos clashing? Did Scott and Michael Bisping nearly fall out??? Don't be ridiculous. What it was like on set, how did they choreograph the action, mix the different fighting styles from karate to silat. Can you ignore jungle bugs and snakes? In a live link between London, UK and Los Angeles, California we talked via a tough Skype wi fi link. Triple Threat has the best action, martial arts, movie stars in a full on action script in awesome meltdown, action, mayhem. Definitely worth watching. This breakneck thriller teams over half a dozen of the world’s biggest action stars for the martial arts event film of the year. When a hit is taken out on a billionaire’s daughter, it’s mercenaries versus assassins in an all-out war. Synopsis: A down-and-out team of mercenaries must take on a group of professional assassins and stop them before they kill their target: a billionaire’s daughter intent on bringing down a major crime syndicate. This breakneck thriller teams over half a dozen of the world’s biggest action stars for the martial arts event film of the year. “We are so excited to bring the superstars of the ground-breaking action films Ong Bak, The Raid and Man Of Tai Chi together in a “triple threat” package. This is the first time all three stars will be in a film together and we’re ecstatic to be a vital part of the Triple Threat team,” said Ying Ye, a producer on the film and Managing Director of Easternlight. *WARNING! Full spoilers for Triple Threat! WARNING!* We interrupt our month of Irish films for a very special, impromptu, Theatrical Edition of the show! In this very special episode of the podcast, Trevor takes his brother to go see the one-night-only, martial arts action extravaganza, Triple Threat (2019)! Directed by Jesse V. Johnson, choreographed by Tim Man, and featuring a who's who of martial arts and action stars, the film has been at or near the top of Trevor's most anticipated films list since it's announcement a couple of years ago. While the brothers are somewhat critical of the film, it needs to be said that the critiques come from a place of love and appreciation. While not a perfect film by any means, the novelty of seeing Scott Adkins, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Tiger Chen, Michael Jai White, Jeeja Yanin, Michael Bisping, Ron Smoorenburg, and Dominique Vandenberg onscreen, beating the hell out of each other, is dream come true kind of stuff for an action fan like Trevor.

☰ Since I have started posting my experiences on Facebook again, I have been asked to share my thoughts on Tai Chi (Quan) 太極拳 because for some inexplicable reason I attract a lot of Tai Chi practitioners around me, even though my preferred style is Bagua Zhang 八卦掌. ☷ I know and realize that these two styles are brothers and sisters along the Tao of Martials Arts. The very act of doing these two styles at a given place and time is the realization of what some non-practitioners refer to as good Fengshui 風水. ☳ In 2013, Keanu Reeves directed the movie Man of Tai Chi 太極俠. It was his first directorial role. And in the movie he played the bad guy. Tiger Chen played the hero. But all I seem to remember is Keanu Reeves. And in my my mind he is Man of Tai Chi. ☴ I bring this up because while he is not known as a practicing martial artist (I could be wrong), the higher consciousness around me keeps mentioning him as my Tea Time equals Me Time subject. Interesting choice. ☵ Perhaps I sense he may have crossed the threshold of cinematic kung-fu over to real kung-fu. These things are possible. The martial arts way is open to everybody. ☲ Or it could just be that I resonate with the image provided as I sip my tea in my tea cup. Perhaps all I have just written is a means upon which to ponder over something more mystical so that our minds and hearts can have the space to enjoy this brief moment in its beauty, before we get back into whatever we were doing before this rest stop or starting something new. ☶ The world can wait. All its problems are like sweeping the floor. If we don't sweep the floor now, it will still be there tomorrow. For now, let us take care of ourselves. Close our eyes and savour the tea's aroma as we inhale and exhale deeply. ☱ Man of Tai Chi 太極俠 is an action movie. And most people focus on that - it's what brings in the money, the medals, the praise and the honey. True Tai Chi practitioners focus on the letting go of these things so that we may have these things already because we already have them. Liked what you heard & want to connect with me? Having now worked with UK martial arts star Scott Adkins a total of six times – including on the films Savage Dog, Accident Man, The Debt Collector, and the soon to be released martial arts movie event of the year, Triple Threat, which also stars Iko Uwais, Michael Jai White, Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen and Michael Bisping – the writer, director and former stunt performer Jesse V. Johnson is right to feel proud of what they have accomplished in a reasonably short space of time. Jesse and Scott continue to produce exceptionally accomplished martial arts action features in an increasingly unsettled world for low-budget filmmaking. But it’s a world Jesse knows only too well. Born in the UK – the nephew of stunt legend Vic Armstrong – Jesse used his earnings as a teenage stunt performer for the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, Total Recall, to relocate to Hollywood, where he balanced stunt work on major studio pictures with directing and writing his own feature films. It hasn’t always been easy, as Jesse explains in this frank and often revealing conversation, and he has had to learn some important lessons along the way; about ambition, integrity, and the craft of filmmaking. He is most proud of his new film, The Debt Collector, an enveloping crime comedy starring Scott Adkins and Louis Mandylor (Martial Law, My Big Fat Greek Wedding), available to watch now on Netflix. It will get its UK big screen premiere at the Fighting Spirit Film Festival in London on 14 September. We also spend time discussing his all-star action extravaganza, Triple Threat. Jesse’s next project with Scott will be called Avengement, which has just wrapped filming in the UK. For the latest information on Jesse V. Johnson, follow him on Facebook and Instagram.

Scott Adkins is one of the world's biggest martial arts movie stars. From humble beginnings as a Van Damme and Bruce Lee obsessed taekwondo practitioner growing up in Birmingham, UK, to starring in some of the best fight movies of the last decade, Scott Adkins has consistently brought a unique charm, athleticism and authenticity to his own special brand of high-kicking action films. His latest film, Boyka: Undisputed 4, sees Scott reprise his most famous role as the Russian ex-con' and MMA expert, Yuri Boyka. You can order the Universal Studios Home Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD release of Boyka: Undisputed 4 right now from Amazon. As well as leading roles in the Undisputed and Ninja franchises, Scott's many other martial arts action films include Hard Target 2, Eliminators, Assassination Games, Wolf Warrior and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning. He has worked on huge Hollywood blockbusters like Doctor Strange, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Expendables 2, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Zero Dark Thirty, and worked with everyone including Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren and Jacky Wu Jing. Scott has most recently completed back-to-back projects with the stuntman-turned-director Jesse V. Johnson, including Savage Dog, Accident Man - in which Scott also worked as scriptwriter and producer - and Triple Threat. The latter is an all-star fight flick featuring Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Tiger Chen, Celina Jade, Jeeja Yanin, Michael Bisping and Michael Jai White. In this exclusive, wide-ranging interview, Scott talks about working with the Jackie Chan Stunt Team in Hong Kong, the trials and tribulations of Hollywood, his trademark style of fight choreography, and the increasing scourge of online piracy. Scott is the hardest working man in martial arts right now and it was a pleasure to sit with him and record this fascinating interview.
