This week, Desmond and Duane get weird again with their review of the obscure 1989 erotic horror quasi-sequel to the German Expressionist masterpiece of the similar name, Dr. Caligari. Then, in a mix of laziness and a desire to rewatch it, Desmond comes back and discusses that classic: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. There's probably nothing else to say about this 104-year-old film that hasn't already been said, but coaxing those who haven't watched it to watch it. So here we are. Sure, you say, "Des will probably play a mix of new and classic aggressive but straightforward music." WRONG! Only one of the songs this week actually has vocals, and it's a sci-fi hip hop classic. This week, we embrace the good weird. Songs: "Melding of the Minds" by Deltron 3030 featuring Zach de la Rocha, "Sexualizer" by Perturbator featuring Flash Arnold, "Sleepwalk" by The Shadows, and "Night River" by Shadow Knell. Et c'est dans les loges de « la cinquième salle », que nous accueille un quinqua au visage adolescent qui n'a de cesse d'envisager la musique comme un jeu...Pour suivre Kid KoalaYouTube / Facebook / Instagram / XKid Koala en tournée Titres diffusésExtraits de l'album 12 bites Blues (Ninja Tune – 2012) : « 1 bit blues - 10,000 miles » ; « 2 bit Blues » Extrait de l'album Creatures of the Late Afternoon (Envision Records – 2023) : « Things are gonna change » feat Lealani Extraits de l'album Somme of my best friends are djs (Ninja Tune - 2003) : « Shanky Panky » ; « Vacation Island »Extrait de l'album Floor Kids - Original Video Games Sound Track (Arts & Crafts - 2018) : « Five Spot Stomp »Et aussi :« Crazy in love » (Kid Koala version) par Emeli Sandé, extrait de la B.O. du film de Baz Luhrmann, The Great Gatsby (2013)« Strictly business » par EPMD (1988)Extraits de l'album Deltron 3030(2000) de Deltron 3030 : « Positive Contact » ; « 3030 » ; « St. Catherine St. »Extraits de l'album It takes a nation of millions to hold us back (1988) de Public Enemy : « Security of the first world » ; « Night of the living baseheads » ; « Show'Em whatcha got » ; « Mind terrorist » « Terminator x to the edge of panic »« Its All Over » de The Slew Extraits de l'album Doing it to death (1973) des J.B.'s : « Introduction to the J.B.'s » ; « Doing it to death part. 1 »Journaliste : Hortense VolleRéalisation : Benjamin SarraliéMixage 3D en Dolby ATMOS pour une écoute immersive au casque :Jérémie BessetResponsable d'unité de production FMM – RFI Labo : Xavier Gibert
Been a long time coming but, in this episode Chris and Ryan rap about hip hop. First up, Chris goes super recent recent with Billy Woods & Kenny Segal's highly new record Maps. Then, we go back all the year 2000 for Ryan's pick Deltron 3030's self-titled.
We're completely ignoring the doom and gloom of the early aughts in favor of rose colored nostalgia (and falsetto deliveries!) in our 2000's episode! Joining me on this exploratory journey through time are: Super Producer/Co-host Jared, from the show formerly known as 'Feathers And Friends', now it's 'Nobody's Listening', thanks to our friends over at Lets's Play Deathray and their Extra Life charity, which you can still donate too, by the way! You can also find Jared's YouTube channel at 'Parrot Gaming Productions'. Jake from Life Is Unfair, THE 'Malcolm In The Middle' rewatch podcast that has now concluded its run! No better time to catch up on the rewatch of the show and the podcast, before they delve into their new adventure 'Real Piece Of Sitcom' which will be more fun rewatch hijinks that starts in 2024. He's also part of the incredible Twitch channel, Lets Play Deathray, where they variety stream all sorts of awesome content, every night except Friday and Saturday's at 7:30 PM MST. Jake is also a published author! He wrote a segment in Bi-Visibility, which you can order here. And once again, their Extra Life link is here. You can still donate, and if they get to $2,000, Jake will have to do a Waluigi OnlyFans. Who DOESN'T want to see that! Every bit counts, lets make it happen! Also Kyle, from Lets Play Deathray joins for the FIRST TIME EVER! Just to talk about the music though, he didn't bring any songs. But the seal is broken, and the joke that I "hate" Kyle is dead.....it's really that bastard Kenny that I can't stand. ;) Chris also joins, but since he still hasn't started that Iron Maiden apology pod, he has no links to share, just awesome musical insight! Click here for the full playlist. Please also excuse the lack of normal links in this post, there were too many to include both from a time and character limit standpoint, so please see the playlist for access to the artists. We went in alphabetical order, talking about: An Honest Mistake - The Bravery (Eric's) Battlescars - Ozma (Eric) Creepin Up The Backstairs - The Fratellis (Jake) Gay Bar Part Two - Electric Six (Jake) Gravel Road - Clutch (Chris) Love You Madly - CAKE (Chris) My Moon My Man - Feist (Jake) Oblivion - Mastodon (Chris) *The Odyssey - Symphony X (Jared) *This was Jared's only song, since it is over 24 MINUTES long. When you go to fast-forward and you stop and hear what you think is an entirely different song....multiples times.....don't be fooled. Still this same fucking song. We're sorry...Jared's not. Panic Switch - Silversun Pickups (Eric) St. John The Divine - Ted Leo & The Pharmacists (Eric) Teeth In The Grass - Iron & Wine (Jake) 3030 - Deltron 3030, Del The Funky Homosapien (Jake) Uprising - Muse (Chris) White Flag - Dido (Eric) Xerces - Deftones (Chris) **only 16 since Jared gave up his songs in favor of the singular long song.** We continue with Is It Hootie? with it's incredible theme music! If you, or a loved one, is, or has been affected by sexual violence, please know that there are good people and organizations in the world that can offer help. RAINN is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. NSVRC (national sexual violence research center) has resources to help victims, and, importantly, tips on prevention and warning signs. SPSAmerica is America's leading suicide prevention network. If you have the means to donate, please do so. Every little bit helps. If you would like to e-mail the show, you may do so at Fileunderpod@gmail.com. You can follow us on Twitter and vote in our polls, @FileUnderPod.

Season 2 has been an eclectic mixture of concept albums! In keeping with the form of season 1, episode 8 is again a time for contemplation. And so in this episode, Rob and Joël reflect on the inspiration and insights that have come from their most diverse season yet: Kate Bush, Sinatra, Iron Maiden, Deltron 3030, Miles Davis, King's X and Tyler the Creator. Also, Rob and Joël reveal something of season 3's possibilities, such as film soundtracks and the inclusion of albums that are not officially considered concept albums, yet their sonic relevance deserves a place at the table of the concept album discussion.
In today's episode we're recommending the best rap albums made by one rapper and one producer. There's no such thing as half-measures in Kid Koala land. Take, for example the recent release of Creatures of the Late-Afternoon. Most would be perfectly content to issue 20 tracks half as innovative and vibrant at this point in their career. Koala, on the other hand, created his own accompanying board game. For nearly 30 years, the Canadian DJ has pushed musical boundaries, fusing a broad range of genres together, with little regard for status quo. He's also elevated the work of others, from scores to films like Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim, to influential projects like Deltron 3030, Lovage and Handsome Boy Modeling School. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Kid Koala is a Canadian turntablist, DJ, producer, and graphic novelist. He has released hella solo albums, collaborated with artists such as Deltron 3030 and Dan The Automator and some group called Gorillaz. He is renowned for his other worldly turntable techniques, blending diverse musical genres and creating surreal soundscapes. His latest project Creatures of The Late Afternoon is a multimedia adventure that comes with its own board game. On this week's episode Nate, Dave, Demone talk to Koala about the origin of his name, touring with Hip Hop legends, and how his music ended up on the big screen. On the B-Side of the interview Nate and Demone talk about the interesting sub-genres lurking at the intersection of rap and electronic music. "It's the year 3030..."A dystopian future where galactic corporate entities sustain a strangle hold on the universe, and "Deltron-Zero" emerges to save humanity and music from this 31st century New World Order by winning The Galactic Rhyme Federation Championship. This album delivers not only in its fantastic iterations of Afrofuturism, but also in its rich tableau of multidimensional rhyme schemes and symbolism, woven into well crafted samples and turntable melodicism. Rob and Joël explore all these elements while reflecting on the album's underground legacy, and share their respective experiences and journey with this album. This album ranks as the first hip hop concept album in the evolving canon of the podcast, and most certainly it will not be the last. Want to hear more of Rob and Joël's discussion of Deltron 3030?Visit the Sonic Ventures Patreon page to hear more in the "Deltron 3030 Aftercast," which is the recorded continuation after the conclusion of this episode.
It's been a long, dynamic career for Kid Koala, whether you know him as a Gorillaz collaborator, whether you know him as 1/3 of Deltron 3030 the post-apocalyptic hip-hop group made up of Del tha Funkee Homosapien and producer Dan the Automator, or you are a big fan of his solo stuff through the years. The cool thing is as we see ourselves on the otherside of this pandemic, we are in a time where he feels that Creatures of the Late Afternoon is the most fun album he's ever recorded, which happens to be his latest body of work due out in a few weeks. Combining energy, emotion, and a whole range of different moods, it doesn't take long to realize that this is a very special release. We talk about everything under the sun from growing up as the black sheep, using music to shape his future, and all the ins and outs of what it means to be a true pioneer in this game.. This week: we review new albums from Royal Blood and Warish, and revisit Gorillaz’ debut 20 years on. Also: cartoon bad guys, that don’t upset me much, in a lot of ways kids are just small humans, never go full Moz, diluted Bleach, writing music for your dad’s workplace, don't try to beat Tony Hawk at pool, not what we came for, Muse cleanskins, setting appropriate expectations, a nink and a wod, on further review, Weezer do another Beverly Hills cover, blues-driven nastiness, Men Behaving Badly: Britpop Edition, fish with feet, sad hiphop filters, go listen to the Deltron 3030 album, rejecting puppet leadership, his father’s son, powerfully physical version of rock band, Denmark’s 1992 Euros team, bringing analytics to a reality food show and the big reveal of the cover art for the BALLS ep (if you know you know). Next week: Adamhfoto joins the Doc to review new-old stock from the Weekend and Pitchfork faves Greta van Fleet. Beeso's back in a couple of weeks to talk new albums from DJ Format, Iceage and Genesis Owusu. Recent review albums are in our current album review playlist on Spotify, with earlier stuff in our 2021 review archive, along with our 2021 tripping balls mixtape featuring our favourite tracks from new albums we’ve reviewed this year. The full list of all the albums we've ever featured on the show and Beeso's playlist for his boys are also available elsewhere on the internet. BALLS and tripping balls are available on their own RSS feeds, as well as being found together on Omny Studio,Spotify and Apple Podcasts (feel free to subscribe, rate and review) - and we welcome your reckons via Twitter, Facebook and email. This week, we're tackling Romantic Suspense and reading one of our favorite books of 2020, Adriana Anders's Whiteout! We talk about all the things romantic suspense has to nail (ha!) to knock it out of the park, why we would literally never be characters in a book set in Antarctica, and the wild feeling of reading a romantic suspense about a virus during a pandemic. Also Sarah talks about how much she loves Adriana Anders's writing and recommends lots of backlist. Next week, we're back with an interstitial, and in two weeks, we're reading Sarah's favorite Sherry Thomas book —Ravishing the Heiress. Find it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, or Kobo. Thank you, as always, for listening! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful!Show NotesIt's tenterhooks, not tenderhooks. Apparently Jen needs more sleep, or else it's gonna be a real drag on future seasons of Fated Mates. Jen tweeted about Whiteout a lot, put it on our Best of 2020 list, and even made a meme about it last week. Reading a book about a virus during a pandemic is kind of wild! Jen and Sarah are not campers, but we support you. We do like reading books about people doing extremely cold outside things: Into Thin Air, Into the Wild, and a new book on Jen's TBR is The Next Everest by Jim Davidson.Let Sandra Brown explain romantic suspense to you, and maybe you'd like to read Jack Reacher if you're into that sort of thing. We learned some things about Antarctica and staying warm while reading this book: How cold did you say it was again? Why are frostbite and hypothermia so dangerous? How fast can you get hypothermia? What would really happen to a penis in super cold weather? What's the deal with the red puffy jacket? What was all that other gear Angel and Ford had? What are fat bombs?Do people really burn 6000 calories a day there? Can you really go 300 miles on foot? What is an ice core and why do scientists study them? Are ice tunnels real? Why is flying a plane in Antartica so dangerous? What about driving vehicles?Or swimming? There are mountain ranges in Antartica? What's the terrain like? Is that cravasee thing real? Can you really make a heater out of a tealight candle? Why are there seasons??What is Polar Night? Was it just a coincidence that you released this episode concurrently with the onset of Polar Night in Antartica?Outside of murdering people for their ice core samples, are people doing crimes in Antarctica? How accurate is the movie Arctic with Mads Mikkleson? How's Antartica doing in global climate change? Thanks to Amy, one of our listeners, we now know that Antarctica TikTok exists. The two ice stations in the book McMurdo and Vostok are real research stations, and actually there are way more of these stations than you'd think. Angel calls Ford the Iceman, but not that Iceman. If you want to read more about racism and greed in American pharmaceutical companies, you might be interested in Empire of Pain, Patrick Radden Keefe's new book about the Sackler family, about Pfizer and Moderna and the COVID vaccine, Henrietta Lacks, the Tuskegee experiments, medical colonialism, and the list goes on and on. Big Bad Wolf by Suleikha Snyder isn't a critique of big pharma, but it is a fierce critique of the American system of justice. Chekhov's Gun is an axiom by the playwright about how props on stage must come into the plot. You can still order the Fated Mates Best of 2020 pack from Old Town Books. MusicZager & Evans - In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus), Duran Duran - My Antarctica, Deltron 3030 - Virus, ZZ Top - Sleeping BagListen to the full Fated Mates music collection.
Kolby Kirby is one of the funniest people I have ever met. He never fails to make me laugh and this podcast is a really great snapshot of his personality. You get a taste of his humor, with a dash of humility, and a twist of homeless-living in a hammock on the beach in Hawaii while learning to make sushi. It's great. We talk about many things, but most of the show revolves around the subject of finding joy in creative pursuits. We also talk about God, life, death, drugs, sex, music, and brainwashing, and so many other popular topics on Ramble by the River. Just one year after the world got the hip-hopera masterpiece "A Prince Among Thieves," the world got another injection of masterful hip-hop story-telling, in 2000's "Deltron 3030." It's an adventure that traverses time and space, in a universe where rap battling is the most honorable form of combat, and a way to fight the corporate overlords. Our heroes are Del the Funky Homosapien as "Deltron-Zero", a mech soldier turned rebel, and Dan the Automator as "The Automator", a "time traveling cyborg wizard" (actual quote from the wiki). Together, they attempt to take down the faceless, soulless organizations in this 31st century dystopia. They covered some of these Afrofuturist ideas in earlier hip-hop or hip-hop adjacent groups such as Sun Ra, Kool Keith, and Paliament-Funkadelic; but with the production capabilities of the beginning of the 21st century, Del and Dan the Automator give the genre a rejuvenation and an instant cult classic. Although it didn't get the initial attention that it deserved, "Deltron 3030" has stood the test of time, and even stands above a lot of what it had to compete with. Today it's Brad, Jon, Dave, Jake, and Trevor on to talk. It's the whole crew!! Deltron 3030's Del the Funky Homosapien and Dan the Automator discuss authenticity in hip hop, how Mega Man inspired their last record, and resisting the urge to play the game. The music industry game, that is. You'll also hear a live session from The Tallest Man on Earth and a tribute to Muhammad Ali.
I knew this was going to be a special time when I walked in on Del the Funky Homosapien and Dan the Automator (two thirds of Deltron 3030) arguing with one another about disco. Sure enough, it was a spirited conversation about hip hop, authenticity and secret mandolins. Oh and by the way, their new record, "Event 2," is badass!
