Most observers of China's relations with the world maintain that China's foreign policy started becoming more assertive beginning in the 2010s. The label “wolf warrior diplomacy” was coined by Western media to describe the aggressive language used by Chinese diplomats. The term “wolf warrior” comes from the title of the Chinese action film Wolf Warrior 2 and describes a more combative approach used by many Chinese diplomats, especially in social media and in interviews.Explanations for China's increased diplomatic assertiveness vary, ranging from rising military and economic might to the personal leadership style of General Secretary Xi Jinping. A recently published book titled “China's Rising Foreign Ministry,” investigates the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in shaping and implementing Chinese foreign policy. In the words of a Southeast Asian diplomat who was interviewed by the book's author, “China has a bigger international influence in the last five years—and it is the PRC foreign ministry that is pushing and driving it" (114).Host Bonnie Glaser is joined by the book's author Dylan Loh Ming Hui, Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Global Affairs at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His research focuses on Chinese foreign policy, Southeast Asian regionalism, and Asian conceptions of the international order. Timestamps[01:57] What questions was the book seeking to address? Former Japanese Ambassador to Australia Shingo Yamagami discusses the rise of China's "wolf-warrior" diplomacy, including what motivates their aggressive approach to their diplomatic roles. He explains how China's growing economic and military power has led to a shift in their approach to international relations, with a focus on regaining national prestige at the expense of China's neighbors. Ambassador Yamagami emphasizes the need for countries to speak out against these aggressive tactics and not acquiesce to their demands. He also discusses the importance of the AUKUS and the Quad, Japan's recent rapprochement with South Korea, and the important role of Japan's new national security policy in countering China's influence. In this week's edition of "There I was ...", Ray tells his experience with a Chinese military diplomat who had a list of things he had to say.

According to Denis Staunton, a troubled economy at home and rising trade tensions abroad has seen China drop its aggressive Wolf Warrior diplomacy in favour of dialogue with the United States and a charm offensive towards the European Union. But can Beijing rescue the domestic economy from deflationary pressures without provoking a trade war over the export of goods such as electric vehicles and other green energy products? And how will the latest tightening of control in Hong Kong and continuing tensions over Taiwan and in the South China Sea affect China's relations with the rest of the world? Irish Times journalist Denis Staunton, the only correspondent for an Irish news organisation in China, joins the IIEA from Beijing with an update. About the Speaker: Denis Staunton has been China Correspondent for The Irish Times based in Beijing since October 2022. He was London Editor from 2015 to 2022 and has previously been the newspaper's correspondent in Washington, Brussels and Berlin and served as Foreign Editor and Deputy Editor.

Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news all eyes are on China to see if they pull the trigger on their old stimulus playbook again. But first this week, the focal point in the United States will revolve around the PCE price indexes, and data on personal income and spending. Other key data include durable goods orders, their final Q4 GDP growth reading, a key consumer confidence survey, and housing market indicators such as new and pending home sales. It will be a busy week in Japan with BoJ minutes, and data on their unemployment rate, industrial production, retail sales, and housing starts. It will be a quieter week for Chinese economic releases but it will include data on industrial profits. And markets will pay close attention to potential stimulus announcements and how authorities will let the yuan's price shift. In Australia, February's inflation rate is expected on Wednesday and a rise is expected, inflation expectation survey data may come in before that, while markets also await the Westpac consumer confidence survey results. And staying in Australia, there is plenty of evidence their housing market is back on a roll with an active auction market this past weekend and sales volumes high.Prices seem to be rising. Behind it all is a shortage of housing as their inward migration levels rise fast.Meanwhile the Australian central bank released its half-yearly Financial Stability Report on Friday and it concluded that while conditions will remain challenging for many households and businesses there this year, "strong conditions in the labour market, the large savings buffers accumulated by many borrowers during the pandemic and rising housing prices are helping households to adapt." The Australian financial system has a high level of resilience and is well positioned to continue to support the economy, they say.In China, incoming foreign direct investment fell more than -19% in February from a year ago, the largest fall since the GFC and far more than in the early stages of the pandemic. Recent 'legal' changes and the rise of the MSS in the Middle Kingdom is making it too tough to operate there. The trade disengagement underway isn't ending. Only US$14.3 bln arrived as investment in February about half the stunted levels on one and two years ago.Meanwhile, China is making a concerted effort to qualify for the CPTPP trade group with new 'negative list for cross-border trade in services' management. "We have proactively aligned our policies and legislation with the CPTPP rules in relevant areas and are well-prepared for market access offers in goods trade, trade in services and investment," a spokesperson said over the weekend. The recent visits by Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi to both New Zealand and Australia in an unusual 'charm offensive' by the usually prickly Wolf Warrior needs to be seen in the light of this CPTPP push.In Japan, inflation is finally embedding there. It's been a long slog to get out of deflation. Their inflation rate climbed to 2.8% in February from 2.2% in the prior month, the highest figure since last November. It has been over 2% since March 2022.Across the Pacific, although they eased in January Canadian retail sales rose in February according to an early estimate. But both shifts are minor. Hesitating car sales are behind the lackluster results.Across the Atlantic, German companies are gaining confidence, and rather quicker now. Sentiment for Europe's largest economy reached its highest point since June 2023, fuelled by anticipations of potential interest rate cuts by the European Central Bank and a gradual easing of inflationary pressures. But German consumer sentiment remains stick at low levels, generally unchanged since May 2022.The UST 10yr yield will today at 4.20% and down -2 bps from this time Saturday, and -11 bps from a week ago. The price of gold will start today firmer by +US$6 from Saturday at US$2165/oz. But that is little different to week-ago levels.Oil prices have stayed at US$80.50/bbl in the US while the international Brent price is still at US$85/bbl. These levels are also unchanged in a week. The Kiwi dollar starts today at just under 59.9 USc and marginally lower that this time Saturday. A week ago it was at 60.9 USc so a -1c fall since then. And it is the first time in four months since we have been below 60 USc. Against the Aussie we are marginally firmer at just over at 92.1 AUc. Against the euro we are still just on 55.5 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at 69.3 and down -60 bps in a week. The bitcoin price starts today at US$65,430 and up +2.9% from this time Saturday. A week ago this price was US$68,378 so a -4.3% fall since then, Volatility over the past 24 hours has been modest at just on +/- 1.7%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.

In this episode of the podcast, Karri and Henrik investigate the highly successful Chinese action movies Wolf Warrior 1 and 2, which perhaps ironically, rely heavily on Hollywood's cinematic language while looking at the world through Chinese patriotically tinted glasses. But instead of nationalistic fervor, do the movies accidentally end up communicating more about Chinese political frustrations, weaknesses, or perhaps even revealing a Chinese state-level inferiority complex? Films covered in this episode: Wolf Warrior (2015) (战狼) Wolf Warrior 2 (2017) (战狼2) Hosted by Karri Ojala and Henrik Telkki. Edited by Karri Ojala. https://markdivine.com/ About Mark Divine Mark is from upstate New York and did his formal undergraduate education at Colgate University. His years at Colgate University were focused on athletic endeavors such as competitive swimming, rowing and triathlon racing, interrupted by brief episodes of academic activity. After graduation from “the Gate” Mark started his professional career as a CPA with Coopers & Lybrand in New York City. Clients included luminous and no-longer existent financial firms such as Solomon Brothers and Paine Webber. Four painful years later, with an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business in his briefcase, he left behind the suit to pursue his inner vision to become a Navy SEAL officer. He was 26 when he graduated as honor-man (#1 ranked trainee) of his SEAL BUD/s class 171. Mark was fortunate to serve with many great men and women on active duty for nine year and in the reserves for eleven…retiring at the rank of Commander in 2011. After leaving active duty in 1997, Mark started his second business career as an entrepreneur. He co-founded the successful Coronado Brewing Company and launched NavySEALs.com in the year he left the active duty Navy. NavySEALs.com is the leading web site for gear and information about the SEALs. US Tactical was next, gaining contracts with Naval Special Warfare Group ONE for training support, and the Navy Recruiting Command for a nationwide mentoring program for SEAL, SWCC, EOD and Diver candidates. Mark's business career was interrupted by a stint as an Adjunct Professor of Leadership at the University of San Diego, where he was pursuing his Doctorate in Leadership, then by a one year recall to active duty in 2004. The recall took him to Baghdad with SEAL Team One to conduct a special project for Naval Special Warfare Command surrounding the role of the USMC in Special Operations. In 2007 he launched his CrossFit affiliate and the now internationally known SEALFIT program to provide transformational personal and team training experiences. The training utilizes an integrated warrior development model he developed, called Unbeatable Mind, which draws from his 20 years as a SEAL and business leader, 25 years as a martial artist and 15 years as yoga practitioner. SEALFIT and Unbeatable Mind are uniquely effective at elevating clients to a higher level of operating, thinking and leading – encompassing the full spectrum of human experience – Body, Mind and Spirit in Self, Team and Organization.
ARTICLE ON JOHN WICK 4 FROM THEWRAP.COM Final 'John Wick 4' Trailer Has Keanu Reeves Facing Off Against Action Movie Royalty Lionsgate has dropped its third and final trailer for "John Wick: Chapter 4." The Keanu Reeves-led action franchise is the brightest bright spot on Lionsgate's theatrical slate and their most obvious hope for a 2023 breakout. To those in the know, the likes of Chinese action-god Donnie Yen (also seen by Americans in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," "Shanghai Knights" and "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage") and direct-to-DVD and VOD action king Scott Adkins (also seen by American theatergoers in "Doctor Strange" and "Expendables 2") qualify as added value elements. The film will give these folks a higher-profile platform, at least in terms of mainstream Hollywood audiences, to show off their star power. Clancy Brown showing up and subtly riffing on his "Highlander" appearance is for fans old enough to have kids who can buy an R-rated movie ticket sans parent or guardian. Directed by Chad Stahelski, "John Wick: Chapter 4" sees the beleaguered not-so-retired hitman accepting an offer from the High Council to settle his life debt. The last three "Wick" flicks pulled near-unprecedented commercial growth, going from $88 million worldwide in 2014, to $171 million in 2017, to $322 million in 2019. In pre-COVID times, the big questions were whether a fourth chapter could continue that momentum and whether the franchise would expand its overseas muscle. "John Wick: Chapter 4" opens theatrically on March 24th Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjRHZEUamCc ARTICLE FROM POLYGON.COM John Wick Chapter 4 puts one of our greatest action heroes in a giant prosthetic suit The John Wick movies are a stuntman's franchise. Directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are legendary stunt performers and coordinators, and one of the joys of their movies getting bigger with each installment is seeing Stahelski (who now directs the films solo) fold in more and more action pros from around the world, like Mark Dacascos of Wu Assassins fame or The Raid's Yayan Ruhian. John Wick: Chapter 4 continues this tradition, notably with Hong Kong star Donnie Yen and the king of direct-to-video action himself, Scott Adkins - but like we've never seen him before. Scott Adkins is normally seen doing insanely athletic kicks. He has the sort of physique you might expect from someone who must convincingly portray action heroes who can knock someone's lights out with his shins. Here, on the other hand, is how he will appear as "Killa" in John Wick: Chapter 4:Adkins is playing against type here in a way that feels a lot like Colin Farrell's Penguin in The Batman - and previous Adkins movies like Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday show off the action star's willingness to have fun while kicking ass. Regardless of how much pain Adkins dishes out (or doesn't!) as Killa, John Wick: Chapter 4 is Adkins' highest-profile role to date. It may be a lot of people's first exposure to him. What a kick they're gonna get out of seeing what he's usually up to, once they dig into his back catalog. John Wick: Chapter 4 is in theaters March 24th. SCOTT ADKINS BIO (FROM WIKIPEDIA) Scott Adkins (born 17 June 1976) is an English actor, film producer and martial artist. He is best known for his role as the Russian prison fighter Yuri Boyka in the Undisputed franchise. He has played Yuri Boyka in the 2006 film Undisputed II: Last Man Standing and its two sequels, Undisputed III: Redemption (2010) and Boyka: Undisputed (2017); Casey Bowman in the 2009 film Ninja and its 2013 sequel Ninja: Shadow of a Tear; French in the 2018 film The Debt Collector and its 2020 sequel Debt Collectors (starring alongside Louis Mandylor). He worked in four films with his idol Jean-Claude Van Damme: The Shepherd: Border Patrol, Assassination Games, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning and The Expendables 2. He also had starring roles in The Legend of Hercules, Wolf Warrior and Ip Man 4: The Finale playing the main antagonist in all three films, and also appeared in The Bourne Ultimatum, Zero Dark Thirty, and the Marvel projects Mutant X, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Doctor Strange. In 2022, he starred in Day Shift with Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco, and will appear in John Wick: Chapter 4 alongside Keanu Reeves in 2023.https://johnwick.movie/film/john-wick-4https://twitter.com/johnwickmovie#JohnWick4

It's about a Black vampire hunter named Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx) who's human, but his gruffness and gifts for hand-to-hand conflict mean he comes across as Blade's down-on-his-luck SoCal cousin. Bud has a complicated history with the vampire-hunters union, the headquarters of which is a strip-mall answer to the hotel in the John Wicks, with its rules, bureaucracy, and fondness for retro technology. The antagonist he faces down, Audrey (Karla Souza), is overseeing a luxury development in the San Fernando Valley, bent on vampire rule via gentrification - a plan shared by the undead villains in Netflix's own 2020 Vampires vs. the Bronx. But there is an element that distinguishes Day Shift from any offering of the week, which is that it features a few genuinely pleasurable fight sequences. Some feature contortionists in ghoulish makeup who bend their limbs in eye-watering ways. The best involve Scott Adkins, a Birmingham-born martial artist and actor whose presence in Day Shift serves as an action shibboleth, a nod to the fact that first-time director J.J. Perry is a working stunt coordinator himself.Adkins is not famous, not in the way that his scene partner Steve Howey might be considered to be after long stints on Reba and Shameless. His most visible role to date is one most people didn't even know he played, taking over for Ryan Reynolds in the final act of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to play a not-quite-Deadpool with prosthetics over his face to make it look like his mouth was sewn shut. But he and Howey, cast as renowned vampire-hunting Armenian brothers who disguise themselves as stereo repairmen, roll up in Day Shift in the kind of entrance that suggests the audience is familiar with the actors being introduced. And a certain kind of geek absolutely will be. While Adkins has been inching toward the mainstream - he'll play a role in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4 - the fandom he's built up so far has come from his work in Asia and a slew of effective, bruising features that have mostly bypassed theaters. He's a deity of the direct-to-video realm, proving again and again that you don't need big budgets or a few hundred overworked VFX artists at your beck and call when you're capable of providing the spectacle yourself.Adkins isn't a bad actor, though it's his astonishing physical prowess that sets him apart. In 2006'sUndisputed 2: Last Man Standing, he does a somersaulting kick into a flying roundhouse, flat-out video-game sh*t that director Isaac Florentine captures in full and in slow motion so you can appreciate that it's being done in real life. Adkins is best at rough-and-tumble antiheroes and charismatic villains - he's incapable of playing a character who has not at some point in his life snapped someone's arm in two. He was the antagonist in Undisputed 2, his breakthrough, a sequel to the 2002 Wesley Snipes boxing movie that featured none of the original cast and that was improbably great anyway. Michael Jai White was the star, but Adkins stole the show, and subsequent sequels followed his character, a sadistic MMA specialist named Yuri Boyka whose dominance in the prison's underground fight scene has secured him a measure of status behind bars, on a bloody quest for redemption and meaning.Adkins has made eight movies with Florentine and seven with another direct-to-video martial-arts specialist - Jesse V. Johnson, a fellow Brit whose collaborations with Adkins have a low-rent bluntness that's impossible to dislike. Johnson cast Adkins as a down-on-his-luck dojo owner who takes on a job enforcing loans for a mob boss in 2018's The Debt Collector, an excuse for a half-dozen comedic skirmishes with bodyguards and one good enough to fuel a sequel two years later. But it's the 2019 Avengement (a real word, even if it doesn't sound like one) that's Johnson's magnum opus, with Adkins playing a character out for revenge against the gangster brother who betrayed him, weathering countless prison beatings in flashbacks that seem to just burnish his brutal patina. Johnson, like J.J. Perry, has a background in stunt work, a career path that isn't new but that's led to some of the more satisfying action set pieces in recent years - and not just in the direct-to-video market.Perry did stunts on the first two John Wick films, which came from stuntmen turned bigshot Hollywood filmmakers David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. Netflix's previous gritty action hit Extraction was the directorial debut of stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, who in addition to Marvel movies worked on Leitch's Atomic Blonde and the aforementioned, misbegotten X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Stunt work is obviously a small world, but there's a reliable tangibility to the fight scenes in these movies that's often missing in bigger blockbusters, where everything has become possible and very little of it looks real. In Day Shift, Adkins and Howey join Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco to invade a suburban house that turns out to be home to a vampire hive. While Foxx shoots up bloodsuckers exploding out of the drywall, Adkins stakes vamps in the kitchen, beheads them with a sword, and fences with a bendy lady who wields knives with her feet. Then, in a move that is pure, joyous excess, he reveals blades hidden in his boots and does a twirling kick through the air for no other reason than that it looks cool. It turns out, there's still value to that - to not just being an actor who trains enough to be able to navigate fight scenes with the help of doubles and camera angles, but to be a performer who's able to do something that seems impossible, and who can also act.

Why on earth would Dagwood be skeptical about a scooter with the amazing specs listed below? Check out this episode and find out. You will also hear Scooterstar Tim West's initial thoughts and a member of the Electric Scooter Guide team interview Apollo representatives in a bar in Amsterdam. The as yet unreleased Apollo Pro features over 150 custom made components, unibody construction and an aluminum frame. The "Mach 1" controller was designed in Canada. The Pro has an integrated SIM card that will allow owners to track and lock their scooters (when your phone is closer than 16 feet away) via the Apollo App. The IoT (Internet of Things) allows owners to track battery temperature and how long until the next charge-- in real time. Top speed, light intensity and color, horn, and more can also be customized via the Apollo App. The only way I'd customize top speed would be to max it out.The Apollo Pro comes with front and back turn signals. Apollo claims the 360-light system makes the Pro "highly visible" but even according to them sucks up a ridiculous amount of juice from the battery because they used RGB technology rather than LED. When a scooter can be made "invisible" and you won't need to buy a lock or remember a PIN code. I personally don't believe in locks or PIN codes, I believe you should just keep the scooter by your side no matter where you go and then there is no possibility that your scooter will be stolen. You may be "scooter jacked" but if that happens just whip out those kung fu skills that are renowned throughout the land.Customers will be able to receive personalized help and assistance 24/7 for $20 a month. They found a way to get a subscription out of you because you can never get enough subscriptions, can you?The kickstand comes out from under the scooter deck and allows you to prop the scooter up off the ground, similar to some motorcycle kickstands, in case you need to change the oil. Wait, scooters don't use oil...Apollo claims this is the most waterproof scooter yet. It has a tight seal around the deck, allegedly making it "fully waterproof." Can't wait to try this out in my swimming pool.Watch the ESG interview in Amsterdam:https://youtu.be/iZ5HZZqmAr0Check out Tim West at:https://www.youtube.com/c/TimsElectricPatronize your fellow scooter heads like Ginger and Wheels, Tim West and the Electric Scooter Guide by watching their YouTube channels and if they have a Patreon or "Amazon Affiliate" link. You probably wouldn't expect to see the Cultural Revolution in Chinese films, or the Great Leap Forward, or the Tiananmen Square protests. But for a certain generation and a certain corner of the Chinese film industry, these were actually common themes to deal with. Their films weren't always welcome to the censors, but they weren't always banned, either. Cindy Yu recently wrote a column for The Spectator on Chinese cinema, and the golden age it experienced just after the end of the Cultural Revolution. You'd be surprised at the amazing political – and social – subversiveness of directors like Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou. On this episode, Cindy talks about that golden age and also about what has come after, where, depressingly, it's now films like Wolf Warrior 2 that dominate the box office. Joining her is Chris Berry, Professor of Film Studies at Kings College London who specialises in Chinese cinema. They talk about how their trauma of living through the Cultural Revolution drove the so-called 'Fifth Generation' directors; the bold portrayal of queer characters which got them into trouble with the censors; and how commercialisation has changed the landscape for Chinese directors who are now dictated by the box office. Pictured here is Leslie Cheung in Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine, where Cheung portrays a queer Beijing opera singer.

This week we tackle our first Wu Jing film and what was once the highest grossing movie in Chinese history. We discuss the "country" of Africa, ask "Just how racist is this film?" and ponder the career of Frank Grillo and just how often he's been a good guy. I express my theory about how this movie should have been made in 1988, Cyrus slips into Randy Savage mode to accept a Street Fighter 6 challenge and Devan confesses to enjoying what might be a universally shitty candy. Lots of fun was had on this one! Enjoy!
