Reconciling Enterprise Inconsistencies. Why did the Borg appear on Enterprise? How could the Romulans have cloaking technology in the 22nd century? Did the NX-01 seem more advanced than the 1701? These are just a few of the things that many Star Trek fans cite as continuity problems surrounding the missions of Captain Archer and his crew. Could there be simple explanations that make it all fit together? In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Star Trek Horizon creator Tommy Kraft to explore in-universe explanations that might just make Star Trek's prequel series a bit more palatable. Tommy Kraft and Actors Look Back. Since it's public launch in February 2016, Star Trek Horizon has become a bigger hit than anyone—especially creator Tommy Kraft—ever expected. The fan film that serves as a follow-up to Enterprise delivers the Romulan War storyline that fans were hoping for from the show's fifth season. Centered on the crew of the USS Discovery NX-04, Horizon is an example of how to make the most of limited resources to create a product that can holds its own against studio productions. In this episode of Continuing Mission, host Dennis Castello is joined by Tommy as well as two of the stars of Horizon—Paul Lang, who plays Captain Harrison Hawke, and Ryan Webber, who plays Commander Francis Brookes—for an in-depth discussion about the decisions made in the writing, casting, directing, and look of the film. We also hear first-hand their thoughts on how fans have reacted to their creation. Note: On Saturday, 4/23/16, this week's episode was made available at 11:00AM EDT. Shortly after the release, we pulled the episode due to additional information we received that not ALL fan film productions had received calls from CBS. We felt that as a result of this information we did not want the post to be misleading, and so a rewrite of the podcast post information was needed. There is no change to the actual interview with Tommy Kraft. The problem isn't with what Tommy said, it's in what we wrote and we didn't consider possible negative effects. We sincerely apologize to all of the other productions. To reiterate: As of now, all of the other fan film productions have NOT received calls from CBS strongly suggesting they shut down and we didn't want to cause a problem for any production out there with what we said. Last week we setup an interview with today’s guest to discuss what would have been the launch of the crowdfunding campaign for the sequel to the immensely popular online film, "Star Trek - Horizon". At just shy of 1 million views since late February, Horizon took the world by storm and as a result got the creative juices flowing for a sequel. Federation Rising was going to be the title for the project and Tommy Kraft was going to once again take Star Trek Fan Productions to a new level with an amazing story and amazing guest stars, while respecting the rules of the beloved franchise. We say that all in the past tense because Tommy received a call from CBS, strongly advising him to halt those plans. Bill Burke, Senior Vice President of Marketing at CBS Consumer Products even went so far as to specifically state that this "request" was a direct result of the legal issues going on with Axanar – that once "professional film production" that now is curiously being touted only as a "fan film" once the heat was turned up. Even with the whirlwind of disappointing events, Tommy was gracious enough to join us and discuss what happened and what this could possibly mean for fan made Star Trek productions. But even with all the bad news, Tommy is already moving forward with an ambitious new project that he is very excited to discuss. And we think you will love it! Additionally, we cannot thank Tommy enough for his professionalism and his demeanor while dealing with a situation such as this. He is a true class act and other productions could learn alot from how to handle situations like this! After the conversation with Tommy, Dan and Bill will discuss the fallout and their reactions – and its safe to say that Dan is mad as hell and he isn’t going to take it anymore! #ThanksAxanar

It is amazing that Star Trek: Horizon has been viewed on YouTube over 500,000 times since its debut less than four weeks ago! What is even more amazing is that Captain Harrison Hawke himself, Paul Lang and Horizon mastermind, Tommy Kraft both join us on this week's podcast for another great Horizon discussion. It is truly amazing to Bill and Dan that this film has such amazing "Hollywood" quality knowing that 95% of the film was "green-screened." Paul discusses what is was like to have the Captain's Chair be the ONLY physical piece of the bridge, what it was like to do walking scenes--literally using a treadmill--as well as many other interesting filming tidbits for this online phenomenon. Later in the show, when Tommy joins us, we get an idea of why he chose the Enterprise time frame for this epic story, and what it was like trying to pull together all the cast to get filming during a cold Michigan winter. Hearing from the man himself on his vision and idea for this story is something you do not want to miss.

This week we have a super long show, 5 hours long! To start the show the Tribbles in Ecstasy crew spend time talking to Tommy Kraft the creator of the newly released unoffical fan film Star Trek Horizon. SPOILER ALERT! The wait is finally over--the long-awaited fan film, Star Trek - Horizon, has been released to the Internet a full two days earlier than announced! Created by a single filmmaker as a personal passion project and love letter to Star Trek: Enterprise, Horizon had a budget of only $50,000. Pre-production on the movie began in December of 2012 and this three-year-long odyssey concluded this past week. It's been a long road, getting from there to here, and the response has been amazing. Dan and Bill will examine this potentially game-changing fan film and give their review Then, they'll answer the ultimate question: "Is it Star Trek?" BE WARNED: This episode is filled with spoilers! If you haven't watched Star Trek - Horizon yet, you risk having plot points revealed! Plus, they'll talk about the Star Trek news of the day, including some casting news for Jonathan Frakes, the new Consulting Producer on the forthcoming Star Trek series for CBS All Access, and they'll observe the first anniversary of the death of Leonard Nimoy-something which still is emotional for a great many of us. SCHEDULING NOTE: Originally, we were supposed to have Horizon's writer/producer/director, Tommy Kraft, as part of this podcast episode. Unfortunately, he was forced to reschedule due to a last-minute conflict and we definitely look forward to chatting with him soon!

The Music of Star Trek Horizon. Tommy Kraft has labored for three long years as the main creative force behind the film Star Trek Horizon. Now the release date has finally arrived, and Tommy has a lot to say about the rigors of being a one-man-band filmmaker … and composer. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Tommy to discuss the score to his film, which he also composed. Dennis Castello, host of Continuing Mission, also joins in this second installment of our two-part interview as we discuss Tommy's schooling, Bear McCreary's influence, how the score is more calm and toned down than we've heard before, Tommy's comping methods, and more. Enterprise Season One: Two Guys Walk Into a Bar. You’ve probably heard a joke that starts with the line, “Two guys walk into a bar…” But when they visited Risa, Tucker and Reed actually lived this joke! The end of Enterprise's first season finally gave the crew a chance to get some shore leave, but they had to navigate more than a few bumps along the way. These unexpected detours included investigating a shipwreck, getting thrown into an internment camp, and finding themselves in the thick of the Temporal Cold War! In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Tommy Kraft to discuss not only the conclusion to Enterprise Season One, but also for a final update before his Enterprise-era movie, Star Trek Horizon, premieres. The group also discusses the themes in the final seven episodes of the first season as they applaud finally seeing an “alien” alien, explain how Phlox stole an episode, and more. Plus, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country makes a guest appearance that nearly takes over this episode of Warp Five! Star Trek Horizon Premiere. Four years in the making, Tommy Kraft’s Enterprise-era Star Trek film is at last spreading its wings. In 2160, the Coalition of Planets, a young alliance of worlds led by Earth, is at war with the Romulan Empire. Desperate for a chance to gain the upper hand in the war, the Coalition forms an alliance with T’mar, a Romulan defector, in the hope that she can provide valuable intelligence on her former masters. We look back at our journey watching the project unfold and Tommy’s diverse talents as the NX-04 Discovery heads into battle. Tommy Kraft Talks Star Trek Horizon. Tommy Kraft has labored for three long years as the main creative force behind the film Star Trek Horizon. Now the film is about to be released, and Tommy has a lot to say about the rigors of being a one-man-band filmmaker. In this episode of Continuing Mission, host Dennis Castello is joined by Brandon-Shea Mutala as they interview Tommy to find out how he almost died making the film, learn about some of the good things that happened to the project along the way, and get some great advice for those thinking of making their own fan films. Tommy Kraft has been “living under a bridge” in order to finish his passion project, the feature-length Star Trek film Horizon. He’s doing almost everything himself: directing, writing, editing, composing, visual effects, and even making the costumes. The film is Tommy’s ode to the Enterprise TV series, which played an important role in his life by helping him sort through his struggle with depression. In this episode of Composer Quest, I talk with Tommy about his approach to scoring Horizon, and he shares words of wisdom on running a Kickstarter and producing a large creative project.

Crewman Elizabeth Cutler. Our Eternal Valentine. On Warp Five Episode 57: The Class of 2151, Christopher Jones and I discussed the pros and cons of having such a young and inexperienced crew at the helm of the very first Warp 5 deep space mission. But we deliberated these observations from officers at the command level - like Travis and Hoshi. However, Crewman Elizabeth Cutler was also a part of that same graduating class and in stark contrast to Hoshi, Crewman Cutler seemed far more comfortable in her responsibilities to the mission at launch. Crewman Cutler boldly went forward into that vast unknown of deep space with fearlessness and optimism. That infectious positivity was thanks to the energy and spirit of the talented and lovely actress who breathed life into Crewman Cutler - Kellie Waymire. Sadly, as soon as we started to get to know her Kellie died from an undiagnosed cardiac arrhythmia at age 36. But she left behind an indelible mark, not only on Star Trek, but on the hearts of the fans as well. Norman C. Horizon. Fans often cite Travis Mayweather as the most underdeveloped character on Enterprise, but the episode “Horizon” sets out to change that perception with a story focusing exclusively on the Ensign, his family, and his past. It's a good look into the character, though surprisingly comes near the end of Season Two. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Tommy Kraft and Will Nguyen to discuss Travis's trip back home, the cargo culture, and the puzzling discrepancy between the background developed for the character and what the writers actually did with over the course of the series. We also reveal in the excitement that is Movie Night aboard the NX-01 and T'Pol's newfound love of Frankenstein. In our news segment we discuss the latest on Tommy's film Star Trek: Horizon and debate the results of the StarTrek.com poll in which fans picked the alien race with the best starships. Star Trek: Horizon Virtual Set Design and Video Production. On a previous show we talked with Star Trek: Horizon creator Tommy Kraft in broad terms about shooting and processing video, working with green screens, and creating visual effects. In this epsiode of Continuing Mission we're joined once again by Tommy to talk about how these techniques apply to creating an actual Star Trek film, including building virtual sets on the NX-04 Discovery, integrating the Discovery crew with these environments, and the importance of sound design and capture in making the visuals believable. John Frederick Paxton. Some people don't handle change well. Some see it as not only as an inconvenience but a threat. The Xindi Scare left many on Earth questioning the wisdom of interacting with aliens and allowing them to call our world home. This gave strength to a movement called Terra Prime, which had been around for a few decades prior to the Xindi attack. At the head of this group was John Frederick Paxton, an ailing leader who was willing to resort to drastic measures to rid Earth and the Terran systems of alien influence. He can be seen as the master of xenophobia, yet the actor who portrayed him, Peter Weller, described him as a misunderstood moralist. In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Tommy Kraft to discuss Paxton, his motivations, the contradictions in his words and actions, the motivations driving him to create a baby from Trip and T'Pol's DNA and fire upon San Francisco, and the legacy that he left behind. The Enterprise Movie. Back in the Naughts, word around the Alpha Quadrant was that Archer and the crew of the NX-01 would inherit the Star Trek film franchise once the TNG crew finished their run. Before that could happen, however, events transpired that nixed not only the plans for Enterprise on the big screen, but Star Trek itself. While Enterprise never landed at the cineplex, we can always dream of what form that might have taken. In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Tyler Johnson and Tommy Kraft to toss around ideas for the mythical Enterprise movie. From mining ENT for that key launching pad à la "Space Seed" or "The Best of Both Worlds" to enrolling Porthos in Section 31, we look all around the galaxy and then decide to go thatta way. Video Production with Tommy Kraft. Watching and listening to independent Star Trek productions is always fun and insightful as we take a trip into the minds of fans and see the franchise through their eyes. But it isn't just the finished product that we love. The process of creating them is fascinating as well. Advancements in camera technology, computer workstations, and editing software have put power previously only available to Hollywood studios into the hands of anyone with the vision and motivation to bring Star Trek to life. In this episode of Continuing Mission we jump into the visual realm of production as we're joined by Tommy Kraft, creator of the Enterprise-era film Star Trek: Horizon, to talk about shooting and processing video, working with green screens, creating visual effects, building virtual sets, and more. Xindi-Aquatics. Of the six original Xindi species, the Aquatics may be the most unique. Not only do they lack the humanoid form of the others, but their life under water means they have a very different world view from their fellow Xindus natives. They are said to be the first Xindi to have developed intelligence, yet they are the most challenging for us to communicate with and understand. In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Tommy Kraft for a close look at the Xindi-Aquatics, their background and physiology, their advanced technology, and the sloth-like pace of their deliberations. We discuss what it means to be a cetacean intelligence, how they might develop advanced technology and build starships without the use of Star Trek's standard humanoid limbs, and whether their patience was the deciding factor in the success of the Enterprise's mission. Dear Doctor. In the vast majority of Star Trek episodes we know that our crews are being guided by Starfleet General Order One, or the Prime Directive. It's Starfleet's highest law and a framework for interactive with alien cultures. Captain Archer had no such directive to guide his actions, and the need for one became very obvious when a request for medical assistance led the NX-01 to the planet Valakis and an encounter with two sentient humanoid species sharing an unusual symbiotic relationship. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Tommy Kraft, Sebastian Prooth, and Eric Brasure to discuss the ethical dilemmas faced by Archer and Phlox, cultural understanding, when it is and isn't appropriate to "play God," the need for the Prime Directive, and why we miss Kellie Waymire. In our news segment we discuss the idea of a Captain Worf television series now that a new video interview with Michael Dorn has surfaced, William Shatner's new documentary about the making of The Next Generation, Chaos On the Bridge, and thoughts on the DS9 finale from those who created it.

The Temporal Observatory. We've seen some pretty cool gadgets and amazing technology on Star Trek, but few were as incredible as Crewman Daniels's Temporal Observatory. This handheld device was essentially a map to not just the stars but to time itself. With it, one could monitor the activities and movements of temporal agents and watch history itself unfold. It wasn't a passive thing either. With the Temporal Observatory and related technologies you could actually move through time to observe events firsthand. But how did this rarely seen gizmo really work? In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Tommy Kraft to explore and speculate as we take the bits that we know about 31st-century temporal technology and try to figure out how it functions, what powers it might have that we didn't see on screen, and why Future Guy wanted it so badly. Vulcans on Enterprise. When jumping backwards a century—or even two—you would expect that races and societies to be different. Yet one thing about about Enterprise that ruffled the feathers of Star Trek fans the most was the portrayal of Vulcans. Despite having gotten to know very few Vulcans over the course of four series and nine films, fans had a preconceived notion of what they all should be like. Spock preached the virtues of logic (though he didn't always practice it), Tuvok was the poster child for emotional control, and the deceptive Valeris was… Kim Cattrall. To build upon First Contact, to follow the path of how Vulcan-Human cooperation evolved, and to make them an integral part of the series week after week required giving some depth and backstory to what was a famous but mostly blank slate. Otherwise they would have gotten boring very quickly. In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Tyler Johnson and Tommy Kraft to discuss Vulcans on Enterprise, including where they came from—before Surak and through the Time of Awakening—and how they strayed from the path of logic to find themselves wandering through the wilderness and staring at a fork in the road during the 22nd century. We also discuss the V'tosh ka'tur, the Vulcan exploration of emotion, flirtation with military dictatorship, the rediscovery of the Kir'Shara, and the Vulcan Reformation.
Degra. Throughout Enterprise's third season we see the Xindi Council debate their plans to destroy Earth. Each species has its say, but the central focus is on Degra, father of the Xindi superweapon. Modeled after J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb, Degra is the Xindi with whom we can most easily identify because he represents the primate lineage of evolution on Xindus. He also mirrors Archer in many ways, and turns out to be the linchpin in the NX-01's mission to save Earth and the Star Trek future. In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Tommy Kraft to discuss Degra, how his actions echo those of scientists on our own world, how his immense regret over the damage caused by his creation drives him to help Archer, and how he pays the ultimate price to make sure he saves both his own people and those he originally set out to destroy.
Vox Sola. Star Trek has presented us with more aliens that we can count. But most of these have been humanoid. Even the exceptions—Tholians, Excalbians, even Species 8472—are still easy for us to imagine being real… somewhere out there. In the first-season Enterprise episode “Vox Sola,” the writers and creative team attempted to give us, as Brannon Braga put it, “a wildly alien alien.” The title of this episode is Latin for “lone voice,” and is one of just seven episodes with Latin names—and possibly the best. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Phillip Gilfus, Tommy Kraft, and Suzanne Abbott to discuss just how unique this story is within Star Trek, how difficult it is to present truly alien life, the production challenges of turning plastic wrap into a villain, as well as the technology sneak peeks and ethically building blocks of this early mission of the NX-01. In our news segment we reflect on the 20th anniversary of the TNG finale, "All Good Things…", some unique ships coming to The Official Starships Collection—including the 22nd-century Romulan Bird-of-Prey and the Krenim timeship from Voyager's "Year of Hell," and the big plans that are afoot over at Star Trek: Phase II.
Zeus 3D Printer is Replicator and Transporter Rolled Into One We already have PADDs, communicators, and Velcro (remember it actually came from Vulcan!), and now two more Star Trek technologies may be in our near future—the replicator and transporter. At least they are if AIO Robotics succeeds in its vision. The new Zeus 3D printer combines both of these technologies—admittedly on a less magical level—by allowing users to scan an object, 3D print a replica, and fax that object to others. The printer is available now for pre-order at the price of $2,499 and is expected to ship this summer. The Trek Collective Reviews the USS Reliant The eleventh issue of the Official Starships Collection from Eagle Moss is out and The Trek Collective has reviewed the tiny ship. Which ship would that be? Well, it's one beautiful enough to make you scream KHAAAANNN!!! The USS Reliant, Khan's inverted Enterprise from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, is the subject of Issue #11 and The Trek Collective seems captivated by it's radiantly blue nacelles. Star Trek: Horizon nears end of Kickstarter The independent, feature-length film set during the time of Enterprise, Star Trek: Horizon, will be reaching the end of its Kickstarter at noon on Monday, May 19. If you haven't yet contributed, there's still time to check out the amazing work that Tommy Kraft and the rest of the Horizon cast and crew are doing. The story takes place during The Romulan War and centers on the NX-04 Discovery. It's an example of extreme dedication and creative talent, and is being done on what we'll generously call a shoestring budget—though you would never know from the professional level of the visuals and story. Visit the Horizon website and Kickstarter to find out more through the images, updates, and some fantastic behind-the-scenes production videos.
The Romulan War. One of the most momentous conflicts in Federation history is also one of the most mysterious ones—at least for fandom. Of course Starfleet itself knows what happened, but the writers didn't give us a lot to work with over the years. First introduced in the Original Series episode "Balance of Terror," the Earth-Romulan War is the basis for centuries of animosity between these two powers. The details remained elusive and over the years bits and pieces came out through the various spinoff series, books, comics, and fan projects. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Larry Nemecek, Alec Peters, and Tommy Kraft to discuss this legendary war, its origins, the conflict, the aftermath, and how it has been retconned over time. In our news segment we learn about Star Trek: The Exhibition's arrival at Mall of America, the fan art that became an actual book series in Star Trek Seekers, how you can share some Romulan Ale with Larry, Roberto Orci's bid to direct the next film, and Teras Cassidy pops in for a Geek Nation Tours update.

Romulans on Enterprise. First introduced in the Original Series episode "Balance of Terror," the Romulans became a lengendary villain within Star Trek lore. The conflict between humans and Romulans is also lengendary despite never having been played out on screen. When Enterprise decided to bring Romulans into the show in the second-season episode "Minefield," they faced a huge challenge in keeping with canon. TOS established that humans had never seen Romulans prior to the late 23rd century. How do you tell a compelling story and stay true to that? Even more difficult, how do you establish a Romulan plot directly involving our characters in Season Four without them ever coming face-to-face? In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Tommy Kraft, writer and executive producer of the Enterprise-era film Star Trek: Horizon, to discuss Romulans in Star Trek and Romulans on Enterprise, from their first appearance in "Minefield" to the mysterious coda of "Kir'Shara." And, of course, we discuss the deeper plot involving Romulans in "Babel One," "United," and "The Aenar."
Tommy Kraft and Marc Bowers talk Star Trek: Horizon. We know a great deal about the 23rd and 24th centuries, but our exploration of the 22nd was unfortunately cut short. The cancellation of Enterprise not only left behind a number of loose threads from the series, but also key moments in Star Trek history that a prequel should have explored. Almost ten years after Enterprise left television, the feature-length film Star Trek: Horizon aims to close one of those gaps by telling the story of the famous Earth-Romulan War. Made by fans in love with Star Trek and set during the Enterprise time period, Horizon centers on The Coalition of Planets, a young alliance of worlds led by Earth, that is at war with the Romulan Empire. Desperate for a chance to gain the upper hand, the Coalition forms an alliance with T’mar, a Romulan deserter, in the hopes that she can provide valuable intelligence on her former masters. In the episode of Continuing Mission we're joined by writer, director, and executive producer Tommy Kraft, and actor Marc Bowers, who plays Commander Jackson Gates, first officer of the NX-04 Discovery, to learn more about this story and how the film is being put together.
