On Episode 150 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis kicks off a celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE! This film is a 1979 American science fiction drama directed by Robert Wise. It is based on and stars the cast of the 1966–1969 television series Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, who serves as producer. In the film, set in the 2270s, a mysterious and powerful alien cloud known as V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of the recently refitted Starship Enterprise to lead it on a mission to determine V'Ger's origins and save the planet. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor in an exclusive interview is DAVID GAUTREAUX, the actor perhaps best known for work he never did – the role of Vulcan science officer Xon in the proposed Star Trek: Phase II television series. When the series was aborted, he was given the role of Commander Branch in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. David has also guest-starred in numerous television series including Man From Atlantis, Search for Tomorrow, One Life to Live, T. J. Hooker, L.A. Law, ER, Rules of Engagement, Boston Legal, and The Beast. He played recurring roles on Franklin & Bash, Damages, and the latest incarnation of S.W.A.T. In this interview, David discusses with Curtis about his career in and out of Star Trek, complete with several nuggets of minutia and obscurity which you'll only hear right here on RetroZest! Star Trek: Phase II. After the perceived failure of The Original Series, and the ending of The Animated Series, Paramount decides to do a film, then a television series, then back to a film, which ultimately became Star Trek: The Motion Picture. However, there was a time when a fourth major network was a big deal with a Star Trek series as its cornerstone. No, it is not the formation of the United Paramount Network (UPN) and the creation of Star Trek: Voyager. It is actually a different network and series altogether. In this episode of Twin Cities Trekkies, Wes is joined by Jeffrey of the Renegade Shipyards Instagram social media account, to talk about Star Trek: Phase II, which would have been the cornerstone of the Paramount Television Service and would have debuted in 1978. Star Trek ran for three seasons on NBC before being cancelled in 1969 due to low ratings. It was after this that the show went into syndication, that its popularity started growing, and it developed a cult following.Due to the original series' popularity in syndication, Paramount Pictures began to consider making a Star Trek film as early as 1972 and by 1975, a film version of Star Trek was announced - Star Trek: Planet of the Titans (although that wasn't the only one!)Star Trek: Planet of the Titans would become the TV series Star Trek Phase II.Star Trek Phase II would be the basis for what would become Star Trek: The Motion Picture, but it would take a huge amount of both time and money to become what we got. With actors embroiled in lawsuits, constant script issues and a visual effects company that didn't deliver any visual effects, given all that transpired in the years leading up to Star Trek: The Motion Picture's release in December 1979, it's a miracle that the film was released at all, let alone coherent.I would love to hear your thoughts on Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) !CONTACT.... GROW THE BEARD. Season two of Star Trek: The Next Generation fundamentally altered the course of the franchise's popularity and all of that started right here in the season two premiere. Based on a script recycled from the aborted Star Trek: Phase II series, this episode about Counselor Troi having a miracle child causes Bryan and Kristen to discuss abortion, yo momma jokes, and HIPAA laws.

TVC 525.2: Star Trek historian and Gene Roddenberry biographer Marc Cushman discusses some of the myths behind the making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Marc’s latest book, These Are the Voyages: Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek in the 1970s, Volume 2, takes you behind the scenes of the making of Roddenberry’s pilot Spectre, the aborted Star Trek: Phase II television series, and the various battles between The Great Bird and studio executives at Paramount over what Star Trek was—and what it wasn’t. Tread Perilously's Star Trek month continues with Star Trek: The Next Generation's Season 2 premiere, "The Child." While transferring the new chief medical officer, Doctor Katherine Pulaski, to the Enterprise, an energy form crosses paths with the ship and decides to become human. Embedding itself in Counselor Troi, she soon experiences a heavily accelerated pregnancy. Meanwhile, an outbreak of plasma plague forces Captain Picard to allow a cargo of dangerous virus samples aboard. Will Troi's alien child disturb the samples? And will it ever admit its reasons for becoming a real boy? Erik and Justin immediately launch into a discussion of KISS as Erik's impression of Ace Frehley becomes an unlikely guest. The episode's origins as a script written for Star Trek: Phase II get discussed while Dr. Beverly Crusher's absence does not go unnoticed. Geordi's promotion is declared one of the show's smartest decisions. Justin recalls the time he visited the Next Generation set. He also marvels at how an episode ostensibly about Counselor Troi isn't actually about Counselor Troi. Erik both praises and criticizes Brent Spiner's performance in one scene and the pair try to determine what sort of New Wave band Troi's child, Ian Andrew, would front.
John Lim and Andy Bray are the authors of the book "Making Fake Star Trek" and its sequel. The books chronicle their portrayals of Sulu and Chekov in the fan series Star Trek: New Voyages, also known as Star Trek: Phase II. In this episode, John and Andy join me for a discussion of the odd historical circumstances that made their show possible, and what it was like to step into the legendary roles. That's right listeners, it's time to go where no one has gone before -to the big screen, for the first voyage of the Enterprise in theaters! Today the Planet 8 crew is talking Star Trek: The Motion Picture! The Motion Picture (or ST:TMP) has gained a bad reputation over the years, often derisively called 'The Motionless Picture,' but it actually was a hit at the box office, if not with the critics. Without ST:TMP, we wouldn't have gotten Wrath of Khan, or any of the films to follow, and perhaps no Next Generation and beyond. So whatever your opinion of the film -and we know opinions vary, because even within our Planet 8 crew, they do - one must acknowledge its role in keeping the franchise alive. We'll discuss the troubled history of the production, how it swung back and forth between plans to be a new Star Trek TV series (Star Trek Phase II), a movie, a TV show, and a film again. By the time the studio decided to go with a theatrical film, they went into production in a rush, without a firm script, and with a set release date (December 7, 1979) which put the pressure on, especially with the complicated special effects that were required. They were lucky to have an experienced director in Robert Wise at the helm. They also kicked out the original effects group and brought in master effects artists Doug Trumbull and John Dykstra, who managed to finish the special effects just in time for the release.Going to see Star Trek on the big screen was a real experience for all of us. There was, of course, huge anticipation. We hadn't seen our Enterprise crew in a new adventure in years! What would they look like? What would the story be like? Of course we had seen photos in magazines but to see them on the big screen would be a special thrill! For some though, the movie was not what they expected. After the excitement of Star Wars, ST:TMP might have seemed too slow, too talky. For others, it was too reminiscent of the Star Trek episode, The Changeling, where an ancient Earth space probe, modified by an alien probe, mistakes Kirk for its creator. But in some ways, ST:TMP is the Trek movie most like the original episodes. It may have been their attempt at Trek's '2001,' but it maintains Trek's hopeful concept for mankind's development as a species.Regardless of one's thoughts about the plot of the film, the special effects are still beautiful to behold (and if you haven't seen the director's edition, run out now and get it!), and Jerry Goldsmith's score is perhaps the best Star Trek score of all. His main theme went on to become the theme of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but it originated here, with this film, and it's absolutely beautiful to hear in conjunction with the visual of the streamlined Enterprise. In any case, it's worth a revisit if you haven't seen it in a while. Check it out and let us know your thoughts! For our Sensor Sweep this episode, to go with our theme, Karen shares a book that goes into great depth on ST:TMP: Return to Tomorrow: The Filming of Star Trek: The Motion Picture by Preston Neal Jones. In this hefty tome, Jones has put together an oral history of the film, which includes interviews with the cast and crew of The Motion Picture. Honestly, anything you would ever want to know about how the movie was made is included in this book. You can find it from sellers on Amazon, and at the time of this writing, they now have an ebook version too.We also want to give a plug to our first ever video-only episode on our YouTube channel! We decided to do a quick little video Sensor Sweep for you guys, sharing some of our collectibles, and a funny story about a near-miss the guys had with a collectible. The Winter of Star Trek & Our Discontent is nearing completion! Today we bring you the final in our series of Star Trek movie episodes. And what better place to end than with the original Star Trek film, enigmatically titled Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It is a truly bizarre and utterly fascinating piece of American cinema history, coming right on the heels of Star Wars, and on the cancellation of Star Trek: Phase II. Eric Ambler, of the What Were We Watching podcast, joins in to dish on this strange piece of pop art, which is as painfully slow as it is gorgeous, as misguided as it is brilliant, and worth revisiting if you haven’t recently. So cuddle up with your favorite Carbon Unit and drink in these four nerds as they travel deep within the V-Ger complex, excitedly jabbering on about one of the most sleep-inducing films of all time.
When Star Trek The Motion Picture hit theaters, fans saw two new additions to the cast. During The Original Series, we got to meet guest characters that helped to tell that week’s story. But they were never members of the crew. But when we meet Decker and Ilia, they are the first, new, significant crew members to join the ship since Ensign Chekov in the 2nd season. While we only see these characters in this movie, they do have meaningful roles in the film. That could be due to the fact that the script for The Motion Picture was originally to be the pilot film for the aborted TV show, Star Trek Phase II. That story was called In thy Image. Had Phase II gotten the green light and moved into production, Decker and Ilia played by Collins and Khambata would have been ongoing, major characters. This week we’ll tell you about actors Stephen Collins and Persis Khambata.

When Paramount decided to make Star Trek The Motion Picture, executives wanted to make sure that everything got updated from the 60s show. That included the Enterprise. This week we tell you about how the starship was redesigned. The Origins The legendary Matt Jeffries designed the original Enterprise. And when Star Trek Phase II was in pre-production, Jeffries was asked to update his design. Jeffries began his work using a drawing he made back in 1964. This was an alternate version of the ship that he created as a back up. He wanted to make sure he had something ready just in case Gene Roddenberry didn’t like the Enterprise design that Jeffries pitched for the show. He also thought that if Star Trek lasted for several seasons, the Enterprise might need updating. So he saved these designs. Jeffries thought that if anything would change on the ship, it would be the warp engines. In those early drawings you can see the flatter engines and the swept back support pylons that would eventually show up on the Enterprise in The Motion Picture. The Devil is in the Details But when Paramount execs made the decision to make The Motion Picture, the Phase II design needed updating again. They were highly influenced by the movie Star Wars. In that film, the spaceship models all had a high level of details. Executives at Paramount believed that this was one of the factors that helped make that film a success. So, it only seemed natural that the Enterprise needed lots of detail too! This started the creation of an entirely new model for The Motion Picture, one that would take nine months to create, have leading-edge technology installed in it, cost $1 million and face several accidents on the way to the studio.

He’s the person who brought Star Trek to the big screen. Director Robert Wise had a long and notable career before coming to Star Trek. When producers were looking for a director, his name jumped off the page! The hiring of Wise was a sign that the project was legitimate and the power of Paramount was behind it. It's also a sign that Gene Roddenberry and the studio execs knew they needed an experienced filmmaker to get this movie going and get it finished by its premiere date. Robert Wise was a guy who could do that. At this point in 1978, he had worked in the business for 44 years and as a director for 36. That’s a lot of experience. Hiring Robert Wise In August 1977, Paramount CEO Michael Eisner decided to cancel Star Trek Phase II and create a big budget film for Star Trek. As we talked about back in Episode 89 of 70s Trek, director Robert Collins had been hired to direct the Phase II TV pilot, In Thy Image in the fall of 1977. But Paramount felt that the big budget film project needed a credible film director. Gene Roddenberry suggested Robert Wise. The two had met years earlier at a science fiction seminar at the University of Arizona. They found they had a lot in common and talked about possibly working together someday. The new Star Trek film gave them that opportunity. Eisner called Bob Wise and pitched the idea of him directing the movie. Wise told him he wasn’t a Trekkie, but he was willing to come down and talk about it. At the meeting, Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenburg told him about the project and set him up in a screening room where he could watch episodes of Star Trek to get a feel for the show. Wise told William Shatner for his book Movie Memories, “I liked them, thought they were all pretty good, and a couple of them were really exceptional. So I went back and talked with Michael and Jeffrey one more time, and at that point things really started falling into place. I’d made the Andromeda Strain, I’d made The Day the Earth Stood Still, what better way was there to continue forward than with the crew of the Enterprise?” Wise was hired in early March 1978. When he signed his contract, he insisted that he be given the authority of not just the film’s director, but also the executive producer. That gave him the authority to make decisions that got things done. If there was a logjam or difference of opinion about something, he could come in and tell others how to move forward. The Search for Spock But of course, it was the role that his wife Millicent and her father played that really helped the project move in the right direction. They convinced Wise that Leonard Nimoy as Spock was essential to any Star Trek project. The film would never work without him. So when Wise told Eisner and Katzenburg that he wanted to do the film, he also told them that the project can’t move forward without Nimoy. They agreed, and Eisner sent Katzenburg to New York to convince Nimoy to join the project. Wise was able to convince Eisner that giving in to Nimoy’s demands about royalties and residual payments for using his likeness, was a better alternative than trying to do Star Trek without him. Paramount gave in to Nimoy's demands and within days he was attached to the project. Spock was back.
Even though Star Trek Phase II was officially cancelled by Paramount in August 1977 to make The Motion Picture instead, the production team working on the show didn’t know it. Paramount decided to keep its decision a secret until it had all the business arrangements in order first. So the Phase II team was kept in the dark, purposefully. They continued on as if nothing had ever happened. Because as far as they knew, it hadn’t! So the production crew continued to hire actors, redesign the Enterprise and build new sets. Of course, as the crew ramps up for a production that will never happen, the creative team also needed story ideas. Former Roddenberry assistant and new story editor Jon Povil listened to hundreds of pitches, trying to find just the right stories that fit Star Trek's unique requirements. On this episode of 70s trek, co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto tell you about the second group of stories that would have made up the first season of Star Trek Phase II.
Production was moving forward on the first Star Trek TV spin-off, Phase II, in the summer and fall of 1977. Even though Paramount, in August 1977, had already decided that Phase II was dead. To ensure that they had all of the cast contracts in place for the coming movie...and to make sure that this time, the production would move forward...the studio waited until March 1978 to tell the world about this new version of the production, Star Trek The Motion Picture. And of course during that time, between August ‘77 and March ‘78, nobody working on Phase II knew that it was dead. They were kept in the dark. So work on the show continued. Along with building the sets, signing the cast, and creating a new model for the Starship Enterprise...the production staff needed stories. In the book, Star Trek Phase II, the authors Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens explain that Jon Povil, the story editor for the show, had to listen to hundreds of pitches from writers! From those pitches, 13 emerged as the best stories that fit the show’s hour-long format, and Star Trek’s unique universe. In this episode of 70s Trek, we tell you about six of them: Tomorrow and the Stars Cassandra The Child Kitumba Parts 1 and 2 Practice in Walking Deadlock Next week, we tell you about the last seven scripts.
In the summer of 1977, Gene Roddenberry was busy making plans for a new TV show that would be the first Star Trek spin-off. Star Trek Phase II would update the look and feel of the original series so it would fit the 1970s. Of course, that included the look of the Enterprise, as well. Phase II Enterprise It's an intriguing idea: There was almost a Star Trek show in 1978 that would have featured a redesigned USS Enterprise. The knowledge of Phase II stayed hidden from fans for decades. But internet websites have brought this lost series to light in recent years. Now, when you search "Star Trek Phase II" on the internet, there’s a huge amount of content. You can find a multitude of articles, videos and images. There's even a pretty well-known fan film group that chose the name, "Star Trek Phase II" when they told the continuing adventures of the Starship Enterprise. On top of all of that, there’s been even more content in the last few months with the recent release of a starship model of the Phase II Enterprise by the company Eaglemoss, as part of their Star Trek Starships Collection. The release of that model is interesting timing, since that’s the subject of this week's episode.
On this episode of 70s Trek we talk about the first Star Trek spin off. And it is not The Next Generation. The first, planned, live-action sequel to The Original Series was actually a show called Star Trek Phase II. Phase II After spending two years looking for the right Star Trek film script in the mid 1970s, Paramount executives began to think that making a Trek movie might not work. Thus, they began to shift their thinking, and started looking at Star Trek from the view point of its origins: A television property. While the Star Trek activity played itself out, Paramount was looking into creating a fourth television network. It was an idea the company had considered before. Now with Trek moving back toward being a TV show, it seemed natural to move forward with the new network with a new Star Trek TV show as its anchor. Then on May 25, 1977, the movie Star Wars was released. This convinced studio execs to move forward with Trek as a TV show. The thinking by execs was that moviegoers had seen their science fiction movie and would not want to see another one again for some time. Of course, they totally misread the audience. From this frustration of not being able to develop Trek as a film, from thinking that they had missed their chance, and Paramount’s desire to start a new TV network, Star Trek Phase II was born.
So...what is your favorite Star Trek series? Original? Voyager? Next Generation? Enterprise? Phase II? Discovery? DS9? Wait, wait, wait. What is Phase II, you ask? Well, today on GeekFest Rants, Carlos will go where many fans have NOT gone before....deep into the making of the never produced follow up TV series to the original Star Trek. Join us as we go behind the scenes into the almost making of this second Star Trek series that eventually became Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
"The creator has not answered." It wasn't until syndication that Paramount realized that it had a property they could continue milking in Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek TV series. Even then, however, they struggled to get a film adaptation made. After dropping the idea and settling for a new TV series called Star Trek: Phase II which they began developing, the theatrical releases of Star Wars and Close Encounters made them realize that science fiction movies could work. So back to the drawing board they went and after a few years, Paramount was ready to release Robert Wise's Star Trek: The Motion Picture in theatres. It proved successful and spawned a massive franchise that has found legions of fans worldwide. Yet Wise's film still has its detractors – whether it's the pacing, the acting, or the plot, there are those who dislike the film. So is it a worthy start to the film franchise? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our biggest series to date – The Star Trek series – with 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture. We look at the film's trailer and talk about who it was marketed to and why it worked. We discuss the pacing of the film and why it's caused such dislike for the film, even if it doesn't sound like it was entirely intentional. We look intently at one scene and discuss the actors, the camerawork, direction, themes and everything else to see how that one scene fits in context of the overall film. We chat about split diopters and how frequent they are in the film. And we look at how well the film did (hint: well enough to birth a franchise!). He worked on Spartacus, Harold and Maude, Pete’s Dragon, Butch and Sundance: The Early Days, The Man With One Red Shoe and Star Trek. Costume designer William Ware Theiss is responsible for creating some of the most memorable costumes in Hollywood, including those on Star Trek. Co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto take a look at the man and his designs. Early in his career, he worked as Cary Grant’s assistant and helped him become, “The Best Dressed Man in Hollywood.” Bill had a reputation for being eccentric, perhaps even rude. But he was a perfectionist, relentlessly driving those working under him. His motto was, first and foremost: "Stop when all work is done - and not before." His designed the iconic Starfleet uniforms as well as the wardrobe needs for guest stars. And it's perhaps those costume pieces that Bill Theiss is best remembered. Female guest stars, in particular, were almost guaranteed to receive some type of revealing clothing. But, according to Theiss, his costumes were not appealing because they showed a lot of skin. His designs were attractive because they appeared as if it would fall off at any moment! Gene Roddenberry brought Bill back in July 1977 to work on the proposed show Star Trek Phase II. That program never went into production, but Gene called upon Bill again to work on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Bill designed the new Starfleet uniforms and all the wardrobe during the first season. His work earned him an Emmy award and two Emmy nominations. Bill Theiss died in 1992 due to complications caused by AIDS. 70s Trek is a fan production and does not receive any profit. Intro and Outro Music was purchased from Free Play Music. Star Trek: Phase II. Almost ten years after The Original Series went off the air, Paramount was ready to bring back the show as Star Trek II (not that one… or THAT one), also known as Star Trek: Phase II. While it went back and forth between being a movie and a series, the casting, sets, and a lot of the episodes were already prepared, and some were re-purposed into The Motion Picture and The Next Generation. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew talk about the series that mostly never was. Would it have worked? Would it have ended up like Mission Impossible II (not that one) and The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, existing but remembered by few? We go through the new characters, the possible episodes, and several tangents on our way to Phase II. Vox Sola. Star Trek has presented us with more aliens that we can count. But most of these have been humanoid. Even the exceptions—Tholians, Excalbians, even Species 8472—are still easy for us to imagine being real… somewhere out there. In the first-season Enterprise episode “Vox Sola,” the writers and creative team attempted to give us, as Brannon Braga put it, “a wildly alien alien.” The title of this episode is Latin for “lone voice,” and is one of just seven episodes with Latin names—and possibly the best. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Phillip Gilfus, Tommy Kraft, and Suzanne Abbott to discuss just how unique this story is within Star Trek, how difficult it is to present truly alien life, the production challenges of turning plastic wrap into a villain, as well as the technology sneak peeks and ethically building blocks of this early mission of the NX-01. In our news segment we reflect on the 20th anniversary of the TNG finale, "All Good Things…", some unique ships coming to The Official Starships Collection—including the 22nd-century Romulan Bird-of-Prey and the Krenim timeship from Voyager's "Year of Hell," and the big plans that are afoot over at Star Trek: Phase II.
Star Trek: Phase II. As Star Trek fans in 2014, we have many wonderful independent series to enjoy. But it wasn't always that way. Back in April 2003, Jack Marshall and James Cawley created Star Trek New Voyages and were the first to bring Kirk, Spock, and the missions of the Enterprise 1701 back to the screen. In February 2008, they redubbed the series Star Trek: Phase II, the title of the planned but never produced television series from the late 1970s. Since its inception as New Voyages in 2003, Phase II has produced nine episodes—"Come What May," "In Harm's Way," "To Serve All My Days," "World Enough and Time," "Blood and Fire" (a two-parter), "Enemy: Starfleet," "The Child," and "Kitumba"—along with three vignettes—"Center Seat," "No-Win Scenario," and "Going Boldly." Some familiar faces have also appeared in guest roles in these episodes, including Walter Koenig, George Takei, Barbara Luna, and David Gerrold. But the best is yet to come. In this episode of Continuing Mission we're joined today by Brian Gross, who plays Kirk, Brandon Stacy, who plays Spock, writer Rick Chambers, 1st AD Dennis Hotson, Gaffer and Line Producer Robert Mauro, and Production Assistance at resident Trekspert Jaime Sanchez to learn about cast and crew changes, the new 13,000-square-foot facility and new sets, the next three episodes, and more. Doug Drexler: Designing Star Trek Continues. New Star Trek may no longer grace our televisions each week, but fans who are creative professionals such as actors, writers, and effects designers—many of whom worked on the shows themselves—are now producing original content out of their sheer love for Star Trek. And it's amazing. One such fan is Doug Drexler, the Academy Award-winning designer whose hand can be seen across the franchise on TV, film, and beyond. In this, the inaugural episode of our new show dedicated to exploring the ways in which fans are keeping Star Trek alive, we're joined by Doug to discuss his work on Star Trek Continues and his previous work on Star Trek: Phase II. We also find out how he became a Star Trek fan in the first place, how he landed his first gig in Hollywood, and how he got hired onto TNG. Plus, moving beyond the screen, we learn about the design process of the new Starfleet-built Deep Space 9 that first appears in David R. George III's Revelation and Dust. Send us your feedback! Matthew Ewald has come from a number of movies ranging from theatrical releases to made-for-cable dramas and thrillers, as well as a few A.F.I. Independent Productions. He was fortunate enough to have portrayed Nicholas Bluetooth on the highly popular science fiction/adventure television series, "Galidor," the Galidor franchise an international hit spawning Matthew his own action figure. He portrays a young Cadet James T. Kirk in the award winning internet series "Star Trek: Phase II," for the special "Origins" episode, and starred in John Murlowski’s Sci-fi thriller Terminal Error. Matthew is a member of the HWA (Horror Writers Association), as well as a published author with a number of horror stories already to his credit (three of which he had been asked to adapt into audio productions). Human Nature marks his debut novel.

The Corbomite Maneuver. Think Kirk and the first thing that comes to mind just might be fisticuffs. While this may have been his first course of action in many cases, Kirk was also a thinking man. This important characteristic of leadership—and the one that came to define him in the long term—was on display from the very start of The Original Series in “The Corbomite Maneuver.” Sure, Kirk could have beamed over and pounded Balok into submission, but instead he outmaneuvered the threat to his ship intellectually. By changing the game from chess to poker, Kirk gained the upper hand—and he didn't even have to resort to “phaser weapons.” As an added bonus, he got a glass of tranya for his efforts. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Charlynn Schmiedt and Drew Stewart to discuss “The Corbomite Maneuver” and the quick start out of the gates by TOS. In news we cover the latest Star Trek London developments, Leonard Nimoy discussing The Wrath of Khan at the LA Film Festival, Jonathan Frakes on the evolution of Riker, the updated Communicator iPhone app from CBS, cast changes on Star Trek: Phase II, new uses from Star Trek drinkware from GiftTrek.Net,and some movie news and rumors. Plus Greg pulls out his guitar and performs his new song “Balok's Ballad.”
Matter Stream: Science, Creativity, and the World Inspired by Star Trek
Craig Sheeler. Over the years Star Trek has inspired many to produce their own take on Gene Roddenberry’s universe. Without new episodes on television, fans with a background in film production, writing, and acting have developed a number of series that extend the missions of our favorite crews—and introduce us to new ones. Many fans are familiar with Star Trek Phase II—previously known as New Voyages—a series that continues the story of Kirk and his crew beyond the third season of TOS. But a new series in development brings an all-new crew aboard the legendary Enterprise 1701 to carry out a very important special mission. This series is called Secret Voyage. In this episode of Matter Stream we’re joined by Craig Sheeler, executive producer and creative director of Star Trek Secret Voyage, to discuss the series, what inspired him to take on this enormous project, and what we can expect to see in the year to come.
Romulans. They're an offshoot of the Vulcans who chose conflict over logic. As one of the two original enemy empires from The Original Series, the Romulans have remained almost as mysterious to us as they were to Kirk and Spock. Despite their increased use on TNG and DS9, the Romulans were never fleshed out enough to realize their potential. In this episode of The Ready Room we take a look at this scheming race to uncover what we do know about them, from their first appearance in "Balance of Terror" to their use in the first J.J. Abrams film. In our news segment we cover Will Decker and The Office, a fan edit of The Motion Picture that creates what would have been the pilot for Star Trek Phase II, “In Thy Image,” the appearance of Star Trek on Amazon Prime, get a preview of IDW's November 2011 comics, play a round of Klingon and Ferengi Monopoly, check in on the possibility of Vulcan coming back in the next movie, learn about a proposed David Foster Star Trek Series, debate Trek's toughest villains, choose our favourite Enterprise design, and wish a happy birthday to the late great Gene's birthday.
Enemy Starfleet, the seventh episode from Star Trek: Phase II, premieres on April 22 and the writers from this latest effort, join us for a live interview! Beam-in and join the adventure! From Star Trek: Phase II: "Enemy: Starfleet!" (written by Dave Galanter and Patty Wright, based on a story by Galanter and Greg Brodeur) is the seventh full-length episode produced by the Star Trek Phase II production team. Dave Galanter has written numerous novels and has made an appearance on our program before! Patty Wright is a Associate Producer and Story Editor with Star Trek: Phase II.
