WEB KIRK.O. Captain Kirk is dead! No wait -- he's a ghost! No... it's interspace! But, what's this? the crew of the Enterprise is slowly going mad? And now the ship is being surrounded by a web? Is this third season adventure a TREK, MARRY, or KILL? The grades begin at (13:22).
When the Entrepreneur finds a tin can tumbling through space, they bring it aboard and start dropping things down its impossibly deep hatch. But when the Suliban and the Tholians both show up and start fighting over the pod, unknown future people finally collect their shit after which the NX-01 isn't even worth a torpedo. When does an extra 5mm make a difference? Where else could you donate your body? Which shot is named after Christopher Walken? It's the episode that just can't get on the grappler's level.Support the production of The Greatest GenerationGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Follow The Game of Buttholes: The Will of the Riker - Quantum LeapThe Greatest Generation is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam Ragusea & Dark MateriaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestGen and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social

We arrive at what are likely the most famous and best regarded Enterprise episodes as we at last review "In A Mirror, Darkly"! We have our good pal Ian bust out a whole know theme song for the occasion as we hit all the highlights. For no particular reason we get the awesome nasty versions of our heroes, Jolene's abs getting their moment in the sun, bad haircuts all around, Mayweather as Simon Phoenix, Linda Park spending most of the episode without clothes on, and the deepest Trek continuity cuts you can imagine. This rules, so get in here!
This week Dan and Dana discuss "The Tholian Web." The Enterprise ends up in fractured space where two universes are overlapping. There's a whole bunch of dead crewmen on the Defiant and we get to see the rather unique space suits that Kirk and the gang wear. This is all before the Tholians show up and cause more problems as Kirk is, literally, lost in space. And then there is the discussion of Nurse Chapele's "pointedness!" We'd love to hear from you! Our journey through Season 2 puts up its first winning streak as we review "Future Tense". Enterprise's worst plotline puts up its best entry as the NX-01 crew works through a Doctor Who plot, but in a good way. That said, would it have killed Trip to call someone when he found a hell portal?

We are honored and excited to be joined for our deep dive of "The Tholian Web" by the co-writer of this excellent third season classic, Judy Burns. While searching an area of uncharted space for the USS Defiant, the Enterprise finds its sister starship in a state of distress. In addition to not registering on the ship's sensors, Captain Kirk leads a landing party to board her, only to find the entire crew dead after apparently having killed each other. What could have caused this? Before they can find the answer, the Defiant starts to phase into another dimension, and Captain Kirk is trapped aboard her when she disappears for good. That leaves Mr. Spock in command, and he must decide how long to keep the Enterprise in harm's way until they can retrieve him. But time is running out: the captain's oxygen supply is dwindling, and Dr. McCoy must find an antidote to the ravages of the unstable space they're in before the entire crew falls prey to the same fate as those aboard the Defiant. As if the stakes weren't high enough, Mr. Spock must also contend with an alien race called the Tholians, who proceed to ensnare the invading Enterprise in an energy web that, when finished, will trap them there for good. The stakes are indeed high -- and they keep getting higher -- in "The Tholian Web," a landmark "Star Trek" classic that's brimming with gripping suspense, stellar performances and groundbreaking visual effects that still hold up to this day. Despite the unfortunate drama that went on behind the scenes, "The Tholian Web" ultimately prevailed as one of the finest episodes of the third season, if not the series as a whole. In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode The Tholian which aired on November 15, 1968 and occurred on Star Date 3842.3. When the Enterprise attempts to ascertain the fate of the U.S.S. Defiant which vanished 3 weeks ago and Spock reports strange sensor readings. They visually detect the Defiant, but sensors indicate it is not there. A landing party beams aboard and when McCoy tries to touch one of the dead crew members, his hand passes right through him, revealing that the Defiant is starting to disintegrate. They all beam back save Captain Kirk. Kirk and the ship are trapped in a parallel universe by the weakening of the surrounding fabric of space. The appearance of two hostile Tholian ships disrupts the spatial interphase which would have allowed Kirk to reenter his own universe. Spock convinces the Tholians to wait until the interphase occurs, but the Enterprise is unable to beam Kirk aboard. The Tholian then fire and damage the Enterprise. In her cabin, Uhura sees a vision of Captain Kirk and reports to McCoy that he is alive. McCoy believes Uhura is going mad and confines her to sickbay. Scott then sees the same vision, and rushes to the bridge, where everyone, including Spock, sees it as well. The Enterprise is able to hold Kirk in the transporter beam at the next interphase and then escape from the completed Tholian web by using ship's power to disrupt space-time. The Tholian Web was the ninth episode of Star Trek's third season to air, with Kirk trapped in interspace while the hostile Tholians attempt to trap the Enterprise. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss crisis leadership and the effect of poisonous space on relationships. Responding to a distress call from the USS Defiant, Kirk and crew find that ship adrift with the crew all seeming to have killed one another. More worrying still, the vessel seems to be out of phase with the galaxy around it. Approached by Commander Loskene (Barbara Babcock, voice) of the Tholian Assembly declares the space occupied and demands the Enterprise withdraws, but with Spock keen to determine whether Kirk has survived the slip into interspace, a standoff becomes inevitable. The Tholian Web was directed by Herb Wallerstein, the first of his four Star Trek episodes. The writer was Judy Burns, her only contribution to the show (though she is thanked in the credits for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan). In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether too little Kirk could ever be a good thing. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. The Tholian Web was released in 1968. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on Paramount+ in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Q-ing Up Picard Seasons 2 And 3 By Elio Lleo We said it. We said it last week. We’re now in an era where the headlines come from Cameo videos that actors record for fans willing to pony up some dough for personalized messages! Back at it again: John de Lancie admitting to one fan for Mother’s Day, that he’ll be on for at least 6 episodes, and that they’re filming seasons 2 and 3 back to back -- with rigorous COVID testing during filming. If you’re not already, go ahead and start following some of your favorites on Cameo. Apparently some of them share the videos they record for everyone to see…so it might just be you who gets the scoop on the latest Star Trek news! Does this entity look like he fears your mortal NDAs? Image: ViacomCBS. Chris Kula's Committed By Cat Hough Since Mike McMahon let us know on First Contact Day that Star Trek: Lower Decks was renewed for a third season, it seems CBS has really taken notice of what a stellar production crew they have over there. Deadline has announced that writer-producer Chris Kula, a co-executive producer on Lower Decks, signed an overall deal with CBS Studios. We don’t have any specific details about his deal, but it appears that CBS is doing its best to lock down talented people. Kula’s credits are nothing to sneeze at. He’s an alum of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, and he has written for NBC’s Community, Fox’s MADtv, Comedy Central’s @midnight and was a supervising producer on Wrecked for TBS. The face of someone not going to Starbase 80. Image: Diane Arbus via Deadline. A Second Picorder of Magnitude By Tony Hunter Everyone wants to try to make Trek tech. The flip phone by Motorola, the universal translator from Google, the Air Force even built a PHASER (in all caps) designed to shoot down drones with microwaves. But all these pretenders are able to do is capture a piece of the magic. Either the form isn’t quite right like the flip phone, or the function isn’t there like Google Translate. Well, not so with the Picorder 2. A maker who goes by the YouTube handle directive0 has built a prototype of a working tricorder using a typical TNG case as a model. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Y9hRy4ev4Q At the bottom, where the case folds down, is space for a battery and loudspeaker. In the middle is a Raspberry Pi and capacitive touch screen for control and processing. And at the top is a printed circuit board, ready to mount pretty much any commercially available sensor that will fit. At the moment, he has temperature, pressure and humidity sensors functional and displaying on-screen. He also has connections ready for a simple thermal imager. The whole thing is designed to be modular, so instruments and the internal computer and screens can be updated over time. Giant Freakin’ Grain Of Salt By Elio Lleo It’s a slow news week. When that happens, we get a little dirty and rummage around the rumor mills. The latest comes from the ol' faithful GiantFreakinRobot.com. One of their “trusted and proven sources” tells them there’s a plan to bring back Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer along with the likes of T’Pol and Dr. Phlox. Well...like Nostradamus, with enough theories and rumors published, you might get one or two right. This one, though -- keep it in the back of your mind as just a rumor. Doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to speculate what that story would look like! STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds The Trouble with Tholians By Cat Hough Starting today on PC and running for the next three weeks, Star Trek Online launched the second Featured Event of the current Event Campaign, called Tholian Trouble. This Event allows players the choice of running either the Azure Nebula Rescue or Vault: Ensnared TFOs, while also earning Daily Progress toward the grand prize reward. These two particular TFOs had some recent updates which have dramatically improved the gameplay during the missions. Completing this Event rewards the Universal Console – Tholian Web Array as an account unlock, and a character only (or one time only) reward of 25,000 Dilithium Ore and 3 Featured TFO Reward Boxes. These boxes give a choice of 1 Specialization Point or an Enhanced Universal Tech Upgrade. The Tholian Web Array Universal Console improves tetryon damage, physical damage, control expertise, and dramatically improves critical hit chance against held enemies. It also has a deadly active ability: hold the target ship in a web and deal physical damage over time, chain to up to 4 additional foes and apply a hold to them, and deal sharply increasing physical damage over time to each new target. No one thought the future would be so...pointy. Image: Cryptic Studios. Test Server Tribble-ations By Elio Lleo On Monday, May 3rd, you might have seen an out-of-the-blue announcement of a special event happening on Star Trek Online’s test server called “Tribble.” For those of you who may not be aware, when you start up Star Trek Online, you have an option to install the game’s test server to help the developers quality assure some of the new features that are being worked on. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1389293607165726721?s=20 Anywho, in a cryptic tweet, players were invited to defend Earth Spacedock from an assault led by J’mpok. Unfortunately, not all went according to plan. There was lots of confusion about where exactly the event was taking place (space or ground). Then, due to the massive influx of players (probably because many of us are still working from home), no one could get into the game. So what was it all about? Not much really. A few NPCs spawned inside Earth Spacedock and players fought them off. What this was testing is unknown. Here’s our community question for this week: CQ: Would live events excite you in Star Trek Online, and how would you like them to be implemented? A Disturbance In The Fourth By Cat Hough Friend of the podcast (and our very favorite Klingon Chancellor L’Rell) Mary Chieffo tweeted earlier today, saying “Nothing says “May the 4th Be With You” like shouting Klingon in a sound booth! So much fun getting back to voicing Chancellor L’Rell for even more epic & honorable adventures in @trekonlinegame today. Qapla’!!” https://twitter.com/marythechief/status/1389679459310075907 Chieffo reprised her role as L’Rell in the continuing Klingon Civil War story arc for Star Trek Online. No updates as of yet regarding when the new episodes will be available to play in-game. The Mine-al Frontier By Elio Lleo Well, this isn’t specifically another Star Trek game, but it’s a game you and/or your kids might be really into: Minecraft! Josh Davison of TheGamer.com put together a top-ten list of the best Star Trek-themed mods for Minecraft. Now don’t get too excited: some of the mods are more “sci-fi inspired” than they are Star Trek themed. But, there are seven solid options. One mod called “A Touch of Trek” includes textures and art assets that really let you build a visually stunning starship environment. Of course, there’s "MineTrek" that utilizes a bunch of mods to let you create super structures and environments: we’re talking multi-level starships! But where's Cetacean Ops? This week on Episode 507 of Priority One: "Q" is getting quite an adventure in Picard, Raspberry Pi can make an excellent tricorder, Star Trek Online surprises players with a starship promo in the Lobi store, and Minecraft gets Trekkie! This week's Community Question is: CQ: Would live events excite you in Star Trek Online, and how would you like them to be implemented? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Q-ing Up Picard Seasons 2 And 3 By Elio Lleo We said it. We said it last week. We're now in an era where the headlines come from Cameo videos that actors record for fans willing to pony up some dough for personalized messages! Back at it again: John de Lancie admitting to one fan for Mother's Day, that he'll be on for at least 6 episodes, and that they're filming seasons 2 and 3 back to back -- with rigorous COVID testing during filming. If you're not already, go ahead and start following some of your favorites on Cameo. We don't have any specific details about his deal, but it appears that CBS is doing its best to lock down talented people. Kula's credits are nothing to sneeze at. He's an alum of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, and he has written for NBC's Community, Fox's MADtv, Comedy Central's @midnight and was a supervising producer on Wrecked for TBS. Either the form isn't quite right like the flip phone, or the function isn't there like Google Translate. Giant Freakin' Grain Of Salt By Elio Lleo It's a slow news week. When that happens, we get a little dirty and rummage around the rumor mills. The latest comes from the ol' faithful GiantFreakinRobot.com. One of their “trusted and proven sources” tells them there's a plan to bring back Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer along with the likes of T'Pol and Dr. Phlox. Well...like Nostradamus, with enough theories and rumors published, you might get one or two right. This one, though -- keep it in the back of your mind as just a rumor. Doesn't mean it isn't fun to speculate what that story would look like! This week on Episode 492 of Priority One: We ‘Trek Out' Pirates, interviews and podcasts with some of the Leading Ladies of Trek, Star Trek Discovery's Season 3 Finale, and the state of Star Trek Gaming. This Week's Community Questions are: CQ: Has Saru earned the same level of reverence as Kirk, Picard, Sisko? AND CQ: If 2021 introduced a new Star Trek Game-- what would you hope it would play like? Or if STO made sweeping changes, what do you hope they would be? Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT A Pirate's Tale By Elio LLeo // story time // Let me tell you a story… a story about a pirate… a digital pirate. Many moons ago, when the general public was strong-armed into agreeing to ridiculous cable-company contracts, bundles, and upsells --- The Digital Pirate would “stick it to the man” by surfing the untamed web in search of desired content. Then, as if by some miracle of the gods, a company dared to challenge the status-quo. This company would soon help the lowly pirate set anchor and hang their pirate hat. But, the evil cable companies weren't very happy that this new trailblazer was luring customers away on the backs of their own infrastructure. Before long, the lowly viewer would again find themselves spending nearly the same amount per month subscribing to peacocks, all accesses, hulus, pluses and maxes… and more! It wasn't long before pirates set sail once again to find their most treasured content…. // end of storytime // Photo Courtesy of Star Trek.com Let's be clear… it's wrong to pirate your shows from torrents or other rogue sites. And we, here at Priority One, would never encourage you to conduct illegal activities. But, what we can do is report on some interesting trends. In an article published by Variety by Jamie Lang, we get an inside look of what the hottest pirated shows are for 2020. Where does Star Trek fit on that list? Well, from most to least popular: The Mandalorian, The Boys, Westworld, Vikings, and in the fifth spot: Star Trek: Picard. Now, Lang points out that these rankings don't account for illegal streaming services but, we think this is a pretty accurate representation of Star Trek's market share as a whole. Michelle Paradise and Season 3 By Elio LLeo While we're on the topic of the Season Finale for Star Trek Discovery, Co-Showrunner Michelle Paradise spoke about the third season's arc and what we might expect in Season 4 with TVLine's Dave Nemetz. When asked about Michael Burnham's journey towards the captaincy, Paradise had quite a bit to say… including how audiences pretty much expected that was where she'd end up. But, according to Paradise, it was all about the journey saying, //quote // So giving her the opportunity to come into this new future and be here for a year without the rest of our heroes on Discovery, and allowing her to grow and change during that time and come back and figure out where she fits in, it felt like the right kind of journey for the character. It also allowed us, over the course of Season 3, to find new layers for that character, and of course new layers for our amazing actress to play. But, where are we headed in Season 4? Well, Paradise couldn't say much other than to try to paint a clearer picture about what the goal was for Season 3, describing it as …all about connection and disconnection and finding our way back to one another. Now, what about that incredible quote from Gene Roddenberry at the end? Well, according to Paradise, its inclusion was a decision made during editing --- a message to reflect our global state of affairs. Paradise goes on to discuss Stamet's relationship to Burnham after she tossed him out of an airlock, whether or not Saru will return (which he will), and Book's impact on the crew. Whoopi Goldberg on Star Trek: Picard By Tony Hunter The interviews continue with the leading ladies of Trek. First off, Whoopi Goldberg is kinda-sorta confirming her return as Guinan in Season 2 of Star Trek Picard. This reprise of the role is, of course, at the personal invitation of Sir Patrick, as delivered on national television last year on The View. Whoopi told SFX Magazine “Hopefully, I will be joining their cast for a little while next year. I'm very excited about that.” And Sonequa Martin Green sat down with Vulture to talk about Season 3 of Discovery and Michael Burnham's journey to the Big Chair. She says that this was always the plan, all the way back to Season one, with every Executive Producer from Berg to Paradise saying “Burnham would be on this journey of self-actualization that would also be the journey to the chair” For more about her views on Michael's year of change and a promise that the Emerald Chain ain't goin' away next season, check out the link in the show notes. NEW PODCAST ALERT! By Cat Hough Moving on to another iconic Woman of Trek… Back in September, our favorite Tap Dancin' Doctor - Beverly Crusher, otherwise (in real life known as) Gates McFadden, announced that she will be hosting a podcast and she's been busy recording episodes. So far, McFadden says she's got episodes with Jonathan Frakes, Wil Wheaton, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton and Marina Sirtis. Episodes are expected to start airing this month - but the podcast has yet to reveal the title. However- the company producing the podcast, The Nacelle Company, has produced several television series about pop culture - such as The Toys That Made Us and the The Movies That Made Us. As the company name suggests, the CEO and founder, Brian Volk-Weiss is a huge Trek fan. ANOTHER AWARDS SHOW - THE SUPER AWARDS SHOW By Cat Hough Tired of having your favorite shows snubbed during awards season? Or really tired of your favorite shows only being nominated in categories like “best costume,” “special effects” or “editing?” Well, you are in luck - because there's now an awards show just for genre fans - just like us! This year, the Critics Choice Association decided it was time to start another - less boring - awards show. Called the Critics Choice Super Awards, it was created to specifically honor our favorite films and TV shows in the genres of action, horror, superhero, science fiction and fantasy. And the best part? You don't have to sit through a litany of technical categories. In fact - the only categories included were the Bests — Movie, TV Series, Actor, and Actress — for each genre. Star Trek was honored with several nominations. The franchise itself was also honored with the inaugural Legacy Award, to recognize “the cultural impact it has had across multiple decades while continuing to appeal to and grow its loyal fanbase with new stories and characters.” Sir Patrick Stewart won for Best Actor for Star Trek: Picard. And while she was nominated for Best Actress, Sonequa Martin Green lost out to Natasia Demetriou for What we do in the Shadows. Both Stewart and Martin-Green accepted the Legacy Award on behalf of the franchise. Stewart said that he and Green represented the “heart” of Star Trek. Though polar opposites on the outside — a young Black woman and an older white man — they represented the range of what Star Trek included, every kind of being imaginable. He went on to say that in these times, the inclusivity and hope provided by the Star Trek universe are needed more than ever. https://twitter.com/trekreport/status/1348467541455347713 Star Trek Gaming News by Thomas Reynolds & Shane Hoover Red Alerts Wherever We Go By Thomas Reynolds From now through January 26th, Star Trek Online's having a party and you're all invited! No, it's not the 11th Anniversary event, but you really should attend. Please, for the love of the Great Bird, show up for this party. Because it's not actually a party: it's a Galactic Red Alert event. Every enemy of the Alliance is coming after us, and they're not even bringing snacks. Rude. Like all repeating daily events, playing one of five Red Alert TFOs each day grants progress towards a grand prize. This time, the magic number is 10 Daily Progress, and the grand prize package includes a Spec Point, Ultimate Tech Upgrade, and Experimental Ship Upgrade. Note that the Tzenkethi Red Alert still includes a fail condition that prevents you from getting your Daily Progress. Also, the Tholians want us to know they're going gluten-free. All the Discovery Ships Fit to Print By Elio Lleo If you've been holding out for a physical copy of your in-game U.S.S. Buran, I've got great news. According to this week's PC patch notes, Gameprint's now accepting Discovery-era ships and materials for export and printing. The full list of ships and material types now available will be in our shownotes. There's no programmable matter option yet, but it's only a matter of time.

Paradise goes on to discuss Stamet’s relationship to Burnham after she tossed him out of an airlock, whether or not Saru will return (which he will), and Book’s impact on the crew. I’m very excited about that.” And Sonequa Martin Green sat down with Vulture to talk about Season 3 of Discovery and Michael Burnham’s journey to the Big Chair. She says that this was always the plan, all the way back to Season one, with every Executive Producer from Berg to Paradise saying “Burnham would be on this journey of self-actualization that would also be the journey to the chair” For more about her views on Michael’s year of change and a promise that the Emerald Chain ain’t goin’ away next season, check out the link in the show notes. NEW PODCAST ALERT! By Cat Hough Moving on to another iconic Woman of Trek… Back in September, our favorite Tap Dancin’ Doctor - Beverly Crusher, otherwise (in real life known as) Gates McFadden, announced that she will be hosting a podcast and she’s been busy recording episodes. So far, McFadden says she’s got episodes with Jonathan Frakes, Wil Wheaton, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton and Marina Sirtis. Or really tired of your favorite shows only being nominated in categories like “best costume,” “special effects” or “editing?” Well, you are in luck - because there’s now an awards show just for genre fans - just like us! This year, the Critics Choice Association decided it was time to start another - less boring - awards show. Called the Critics Choice Super Awards, it was created to specifically honor our favorite films and TV shows in the genres of action, horror, superhero, science fiction and fantasy. And the best part? You don’t have to sit through a litany of technical categories. He went on to say that in these times, the inclusivity and hope provided by the Star Trek universe are needed more than ever. https://twitter.com/trekreport/status/1348467541455347713 Star Trek Gaming News by Thomas Reynolds & Shane Hoover Red Alerts Wherever We Go By Thomas Reynolds From now through January 26th, Star Trek Online’s having a party and you’re all invited! No, it’s not the 11th Anniversary event, but you really should attend. Please, for the love of the Great Bird, show up for this party. Because it’s not actually a party: it’s a Galactic Red Alert event. Every enemy of the Alliance is coming after us, and they’re not even bringing snacks. Also, the Tholians want us to know they’re going gluten-free. All the Discovery Ships Fit to Print By Elio Lleo If you’ve been holding out for a physical copy of your in-game U.S.S. Buran, I’ve got great news. According to this week’s PC patch notes, Gameprint’s now accepting Discovery-era ships and materials for export and printing. The full list of ships and material types now available will be in our shownotes. There’s no programmable matter option yet, but it’s only a matter of time.
Enterprise finds a small craft – apparently from the future – adrift in space, and both the Suliban and the mysterious Tholians are intent on retrieving it. In this episode of the podcast, Wes and Clay discuss "Future Tense" and the flat-lining Temporal Cold War arc. Plus! The guys talk about T'Pol's hatred of time travel, the TARDIS, and Van Halen's discography. Are you looking for older episodes? Find this and every other episode at The Pensky Podcast! This week on Priority One --- the marketing for Picard has reached warp speed, Space Force gets a new Trek-centric name, and a small town in Indiana wants to celebrate Voyager's 25th anniversary. In Star Trek Online and gaming news… the Borg have resurged! The Clear Skies RPG show announces its STO partnership, and Star Trek Bridge Crew arrives on a new system. Finally, we open hailing frequencies and receive all of your incoming messages. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Have you seen “The Children of Mars”? What did you think? AND CQ: We also want to know what some of your favorite moments from the past ten years of Star Trek Online? TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Short Treks Trailer and Ties to Picard Several weeks before the premiere of Star Trek: Picard, in fact a day before this podcast is even published, CBS: All Access will have released the next Short Trek. This Short Trek is titled “Children of Mars”, and it promises tantalizing connections to the upcoming Picard series. On January 2nd, CBS released a teaser trailer for the new short. In the teaser, we are introduced to 12 year-old classmates Kima and Lil. The two girls attend a Federation school together, and we see several scenes of the pair picking on each other at school. As they both seem to be facing punishment for their misbehavior, the school is shocked by an emergency alert. A Vulcan faculty member with a worried expression watches something speed past overhead, and we see the frightened girls hold hands. Now, there's a bit to unpack in this 30 second teaser. The first little easter egg that pops up is the arrival of the School Shuttle on screen. The 24th century school bus is none other than a very worn-looking Star Trek: Discovery era shuttlecraft. There's little chance this has any meaning for Picard, but it's a cute bit of ship recycling and a nod to the other show. But the more interesting clues in the trailer are the ones that we can tie directly to the new Picard series. To begin with, there's the title of the short, “Children of Mars”. Additionally, there's a fleeting moment in this trailer where a news program is visible on a large wall display behind the alarmed Vulcan teacher. As the Vulcan turns his head, a ship can be seen dashing across the screen. If you've been caught up on all of the Star Trek Picard teaser videos to date, there's no mistaking that ship silhouette. It is the same ship seen in several of the recent Picard trailers. These ships are seen approaching Mars in numbers. They're seen firing weapons over a city while buildings erupt in balls of fire, as Picard's voice declares “We face a powerful enemy.” They're seen speeding past an exploding space station. Picard, either in flashback or real-time, is gripped by shock inside a starship lounge as Mars blooms with explosions outside the windows. It might seem like these ships are the attackers, but another Picard trailer throws a twist into the mix. Those ships we've seen in so much action are clearly marked with a large Starfleet insignia. So the identity of Picard's “powerful enemy” seems to remain a mystery for now. Is it the Borg? Is it a Romulan faction? Is it a new alien species? It looks very much as if this week's Short Trek might finally give viewers an up close view of this mysterious enemy as they rain destruction on Mars. Whatever answers the Short Trek provides, you can bet we'll be discussing it soon in an On Screen segment! The Space Force and SPOC While it seems unlikely to ever become what we know as Starfleet, the United States Space Force is now officially a reality. The sixth branch of U.S. armed services was established by December 20th's National Defense Authorization Act. And it seems that those in charge have a sense of humor, and just might be Trekkies! Because, according to a U.S. Air Force public affairs article, all of the 14th Air Force's personnel have been officially reassigned to a new unit called Space Operations Command. Yes, that's SPOC for short. According to the article, the SPOC provides space capabilities such as space electronic warfare, satellite communications, missile warning, nuclear detonation detection, and lots of others to the US Space Force and other armed services. No word yet on whether this will be followed by a KIRK or SCOTTY division. Janeway Monument Reaches Fundraising Goals This year will mark the 25th anniversary of Star Trek: Voyager, and a group of citizens in Bloomington, Indiana has achieved their hopes of celebrating the anniversary in a special way. Having met their crowdfunding goal of $12,500, the Captain Janeway Bloomington Collective group will commission a monument to Voyager's fearless captain, Kathryn Janeway. Speaking about the achievement, co-leader of the effort, Peter Kaczmarcyk (KAZ - mar-sik), said “Since we announced we hit our goal, people just seem amazed that we pulled this off. We're not the first people who had this idea, but we're the first ones who really carried it through.” So, on May 23rd, shortly after the future birthday of Captain Janeway, a bust of the Starfleet captain will be installed to downtown Bloomington. Along with it, there will be a Starfleet delta-shaped limestone base and an informational table about the Captain. The Collective had originally planned to have the monument installed on May 20th, Janeway's birthday. But the overwhelming number of people wishing to attend caused them to reschedule for the following weekend. The community will also celebrate the event with other events all week, like a “Science of Star Trek” event at the local science museum. The group has contacted CBS to help convince Kate Mulgrew to attend the event in honor of her famous role, but no promises have been forthcoming. To find out more about the event, follow the link in our show notes. Ocasio-Cortez Gets a Dog Our last story is a little bit silly, and a little bit fun. It certainly seems like Star Trek has stepped into the light in the halls of Washington, D.C. Last year, Trekkies were abuzz about Senator Cory Booker's declaration of love for Star Trek at San Diego Comic Con. And this week another elected representative in Washington has teased her own Trekkie inclinations. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted to Instagram to happily reveal that she has adopted a puppy, declaring that she's /QUOTE/ thinking something Star Trek related or Bronx/Queens/NYC/social good related. /ENDQUOTE/ for the new pup's name. While it's really just a heartwarming little bit of news fluff, it does bring to mind a couple of interesting questions. From a cynic's perspective, does the Star Trek name dropping on Capitol Hill now just imply that Trekkies have become an important voting bloc? Are candidates actually wooing Star Trek voters, now? Or, more earnestly, what does it mean that the representatives in Washington are Trekkies just like us? Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Anthony Cox Borg Resurgence Featured TFO Event The announcement arrived during our winter break, and the official details for the Borg Resurgence event are here. Having begun this past Tuesday, January 7th and will run for three weeks, brings remastered versions of Infected: The Conduit, Khitomer Vortex, and Into the Hive. DPS chasers take note, Content Designer John Hegner, says in the announcement blog that Infected will still be a viable DPS check with some wonderful new voiceover. The goal for the remastering was to make these TFOs streamlined and more accessible to new players, with clearly defined success and fail conditions. You can complete any of these three TFOs to earn your daily progress, and once you've completed these for 14 days you'll receive a set of the Cyclical Modulation Ground Weapons. Which includes a Compression Pistol, Sniper Rifle, and Blast Assault. These weapons have a unique tertiary attack that when activated cycles the energy type it is firing while gaining shield and resistance penetration buffs. These weapons also feature a brand new appearance. As we mentioned previously this will be the final event in the Free Tier 6 ship coupon campaign and there will be the usual Zen buyout option available. Star Trek Online Asking for Your Favorite Moments At the end of this month Star Trek Online will begin its tenth anniversary celebration. While we don't have any details on this major event Star Trek Online is asking fans to share their favorite memory from the past ten years. You can do that by using the hashtag TenYearsofSTO on Twitter and Facebook. Clear Skies Announces Star Trek Online Partnership Clear Skies, the Star Trek RPG show from the creators and cast of Shield of Tomorrow, streamed a Roundtable Q&A this past week and made a few announcements. Towards the end of the discussion it was revealed what their partnership with Star Trek Online would entail. The new show will take place aboard the USS Ross, named after the first Native American Engineer, Mary G. Ross, and the ship design will be an original design from Star Trek Online's Thomas Marrone. The ship will be a variant of the Galaxy class and the design will be an available skin in Star Trek Online sometime in the near future. Patch Notables The patch notes for PC had a few interesting things we wanted to mention. The devs have added item filtering and searching in all inventory windows. This includes personal inventory, bank inventory, account bank, etc. There are two new material types for the Guardian Cruiser. 8 and 8B, along with two new window types, five and six. They've resolved an issue with the Winter Event buyout not properly processing. And finally Ground Borg enemies will adapt slower to weapons that have a lot of tics per firing cycle. EVENTS PC: Junior Officer Weekend Captains on PC can rank up those Commendations with a Junior Officer Weekend January 16th thru the 20th. Console: Tholian Red Alert And Console Captains can fend off the Tholians in a Tholian Red Alert weekend from now until Monday, January 13th. PRIORITY ONE ARMADA NEWS This week in Armada News: Join us for TFO Tuesday - each Tuesday we team up with other Armada members to earn marks and dilithium. Fed Fleets - we now have Alpha, Beta and Gamma Fleets fully upgraded - including the colonies. KDF fleets - the House of Martok has its Tier V upgrade for colony itself - and just needs provisions to finish. Please contribute if you have any extras. House of Mogh - is now level 81 after completing its final Starbase Tier V upgrade. Well done. Tribbles and Bits - new ongoing weekly event - we want to hear from you - so each week, we are going to ask a random question about Star Trek and about STO and we want your responses. Link posted on the website. WEEKLY TOP TIP The Borg Resurgence event brings us a set of new unique ground weapons. While there's three different versions depending on your ground build flavor, they each have a special third attack that replaces the melee attack and cycles the weapon through all of the different energy weapon types. Now it's possible that this may not be the weapon for you. Or at least not something your captain plans on keeping equipped. But we do want to mention one good reason to grind out the daily progress to acquire these unique weapons. Often times we get presented with a personal endeavour to complete that requires a specific ground energy weapon type. If you're like me, I like to stick as close to canon immersion as possible. So my Feds have phasers, Klingons and Romulans carry disruptors, you get the idea. So completing a Tetryon endeavour can be a bit bothersome. Well, with this jack-of-all-energy types I can just cycle to the type I need for the endeavour and finish it right up! So go out there and get the new shiny. It may just come in handy sooner than you think. Other Gaming News Star Trek Bridge Crew Now Available for Oculus Quest The popular VR game, Star Trek Bridge Crew puts you and three of your starfleet crewmates in command of the bridge of a Federation starship, whether it's the bridge of the original 1701 Enterprise, a Kelvin universe starship, or the 1701-D bridge. Provided you purchase the TNG expansion that is. Well, if you own the all-in-one Oculus Quest system, now you too can beam aboard your favorite bridge and crew your favorite starship in VR. Star Trek Bridge Crew can be purchased for the Oculus Quest for $29.99. This game is cross-platform compatible, so you can play with any of your friends who have the game. Even if they are playing on a PS4 or Oculus Rift. It is worth noting that even if you don't have a VR rig the game can be played without it.

Join the crew of the USS Ophion as they use a jury-rigged Quantum Slipspace Drive to escape Tholian space. The Tholians are in hot pursuit though, leading to conflict... The Ophion campaign started in 2017 and ran for two years before becoming the Amalthea campaign.
The Tholians With James Swallow. Star Trek has created many species in over 50 years of lore, but one of the most beloved and mysterious of them all has been the Tholians. Originally seen in the original series episode "The Tholian Web," this mysterious species was simply shown as a flicker of colors and angular shapes with an aggressive attitude and shrill voice. The Tholians have been mentioned a handful of times and only seen in three episodes, however this has caused them to capture our imaginations and fuel fan speculaton as to their origins and physical appearance. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Patrick Devlin and Brandon Shea-Mutala talk with New York Times best-selling author James Swallow about the Tholians. We discuss the Tholian Web, traits of the species, their description in the Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual, their government, other mentions, and a bit of their mentions in the extended literary universe. Jack's Silly Little Friendly Neighborhood Star Trek Discovery Podcast
Jack is back with Barm again to talk about the third original novel based on the explosive new CBS All Access series, Star Trek: Discovery! As with every other Star Trek: Discovery book, this one does not follow the crew of the Discovery. Instead, it focuses on a tale as old of time: a Kelpien learning to overcome his fear. In that vein, we’ll be talking about fear chubs, the ol’ Constitution Class, Goro & Mortal Kombat, Saurians, the original Saru make-up, Tholians, the Peliar-Zel and their role in TNG and DS9, and all the latest (as of three months ago) trailers and Season 2 news. This is, without question, the single most exciting podcast you will ever hear.
Episode 181: In a Mirror, Darkly Last week Holly had some burning questions about the Tholians, so Aaron and David join Holly and we take a look at the next time we see the Tholians “In a Mirror, Darkly”! Before we get into the episode Aaron has some news from the Star Trek Discovery cast fresh out of Fan Expo. “In a Mirror, Darkly” is a two part episode in Star Trek Enterprise’s fourth season. In this two parter we find out what happens with the Defiant after it was lost in interphasic space. Oddly enough it ends up in the mirror universe 100 years in the past. After seeing Star Trek Discovery we all kind of scratch our heads at some of the actions that happen between the characters in this two parter. It seems at this time in the mirror universe everyone's a little less murdery. Because there are multiple times in these episodes where character fight but they just let the loser live once they are beaten. But all in all we enjoyed “In a Mirror, Darkly”. James Swallow: Fear Itself. For many fans, the breakout character of Star Trek: Discovery has been Saru, the Kelpien science officer aboard the U.S.S. Shenzhou. Kelpiens are a prey species, driven by instinct to heed their natural fear response and be hyper-alert to any danger present in their surroundings. Saru is no exception to this, and when a rescue mission begins to spiral out of control, he must learn to temper his fear if he has any hope of getting himself and his team out alive. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson are joined by James Swallow, author of the new Discovery novel, Fear Itself. We discuss the process of writing the novel, getting inside Saru's head, the various species involved in the story, Saru and Burnham's relationship, Captain Georgiou's leadership style, overcoming fear, and what other projects James has on the horizon. We also briefly talk about the current troubled state of Pocket Books' Star Trek line, and what might be in store for its future. Despite Yourself. After eight weeks of speculation, the answers are finally here! Trapped in an unknown region of space, the USS Discovery is attacked by a Vulcan ship. The crew soon learns they have jumped to a parallel universe in which the Federation has been replaced by a sinister organization known as the Terran Empire. Meanwhile, in sickbay, Stamets is recovering from the effects of his last spore jump and Ash Tyler is concerned that the Klingons may have done something more to him than physical torture. In this episode of The Edge, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Guinevere Liberty Nell of The Briar Patch and Suzanne Williamson of To The Journey to discuss the first episode in chapter two of Star Trek: Discovery's first season. We also discuss writing tropes, the Mirror Universe, Jonathan Frakes, and Captain Killy. Olly and I reestablish contact after slipping thru a rift in the fabric of space-time and a debilitating bout of space madness to talk about "The Tholian Web"! Oh those punctual Tholians cause no end of vexation while Spock tries to catch Kirk on the next swing around the ol' space carousel (or whatever. Honestly, i have no idea what's causing this). It's great fun seeing Spock in charge and endlessly put upon, and it makes wonderful use of the whole cast; even Nurse Chapel! I suggest we could have a whole series of this stuff. Olly insults Chekov, as usual. I suggest the Tholians might be teenage girls in disguise. Olly defends the sparkly spacesuits. It's a haunted house! Kirk-light! It's Shakespearean!
Archer can't seem to get away with much these days without incurring the wrath of the warring factions of the illusive Temporal Cold War, and as it turns out, recovering a dead body from a 31st century time traveling ship is just the type of thing to set the Suliban (and now Tholians!) on his case. Enterprise/Doctor Who Crossover. What if Star Trek and Doctor Who had a crossover TV event? What would that look like? Who would we see? What channel would carry it? Surprisingly, this was actually an idea that Russell T. Davies, former show runner of the British series Doctor Who, mentioned in a 2009 interview. First Class: Greetings, Cadets. I say this while many of you now outrank me, due to battlefield promotions and the like. We also are greeting those joining us via subspace like across several dozen planets, starbases, several hundred starships currently on assignment, as well as our new colleagues joining us remotely from New Talax and Kobali Prime. The purpose of this class is to gain familiarity with a few of the thousands of humanoid, sentient, and sapient beings so far encountered. We'll work from the inside out, and please let me know if there are any species you want to know more about sooner. We'll eventually get to them all, even if we have to involve Temporal Affairs. That was a joke, class; just in case any of you are here from the future, please excuse yourselves or wipe the next hour or so from your integration, and kindly don't go to the Temporal Affairs Office to report me for muddling the timestream. Class business: we meet once a week; assignments are collected at that time. If you're watching via subspace or delayed transmission, your assignments are due 170 hours after the receipt of the transmission of the class here. You should all have my contact information; Please see myself, Commander Lurrie or Lieutenant Commander Polk with any questions or concerns between classes. This class schedule is intended as higher-level Academy credits for those whose terms at the Academy were suspended due to the recent military activity and for those looking to earn additional course credits and commendations while on assignment away from planetside tasks. This is the first of a multi-semester course; We'll cover principles of humanoid lifeforms in this galaxy, as well as other sentient and sapient life forms who have been encountered by Federation ships or members, and then those whose reports have come secondhand from other species and powers with whom we have current correspondence. And now, here we cover the breadth and length of what to expect this term. We'll cover the definitions of the following terms and how they relate to exploration, interaction, and diplomacy: Humanoid Sentient Sapient Once these terms are defined, we'll discuss what is known about ancient humanoid species, the Preservers, and how these ancient races made sure that bipedal, two-armed species with a generally discernable neck and head structure housing a brain became the dominant spacefaring species type. We'll begin with the first Federation species - Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, Tellarites - and work towards other major species. Federation species we look forward to learning about include Betazoids, Deltans, Denobulans, Rigellians, Benzites, Bolians, Caitians, Halliians, Ktarians, Risians, Trill, Zakdorn, and several others. We'll also look at our newly-former foes, the Klingons, as well, as their allies the Gorn, Orions, Nausicans, Letheans, and others Other notables species of the quadrant include the Romulans, Remans, Cardassians, Bajorans, Ferengi, and Tzenkethi, after which we'll discuss various Gamma Quadrant and Delta Quadrant species encountered in the last half-century. We'll then delve into species that depart from the humanoid definition and how that changes the equations. Examples of these species include Tholians, Horta, Q, Bzzit Khaht, Changelings, Devidians, Crystalline Entity, and the Undine. We'll also compare and contrast various species and how small genetic and morphological changes interact with their home planets, other species, and how inter-species breeding is achieved with help from our colleagues in the sapient genetics section. For your first assignment, you are to spend around 250 words - or between 200 and 300 for the pedantic among you - describing your own species or background of species. For your second assignment, you are to describe in detail the first experience you had with a member of a species that is not your own. This species should not be from your homeworld or...
The Gorn Crisis. The Original Series of Star Trek gave us many aliens that became iconic, even though they may have only been seen once or twice. In this episode of Literary Treks Matthew Rushing and Dan Gunther talk about the comic series, The Gorn Crisis. The Tholian Web. The third season of TOS is a divisive one for many Star Trek fans. The fight for survival behind the scenes led to shoestring budgets, sparse sets, unbalanced scripts, and—in eyes of many—questionable directions for Spock. But before this feeling really set in, Judy Burns and Chet Richards delivered a bottle show that put Spock in the command chair, at odds with Bones, and in search of Captain Kirk. What's more, they delivered one of the franchise's most intriguing attempts at a truly different alien in the Tholians. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Larry Nemecek and Norm Lao to discuss “The Tholian Web,” the mysterious disappearance or the USS Defiant (not that one), Captain Kirk (yes that one), spacesuit design, the poor track record of Constitution-class starships not named Enterprise, Scotty's love of drinking, and why nerve gas can sometimes save your life. What’s more, they delivered one of the franchise’s most intriguing attempts at a truly different alien in the Tholians. In this episode of The Ready Room we’re joined by Larry Nemecek and Norm Lao to discuss “The Tholian Web,” the mysterious disappearance or the USS Defiant (not that one), Captain Kirk (yes that one), spacesuit design, the poor track record of Constitution-class starships not named Enterprise, Scotty’s love of drinking, and why nerve gas can sometimes save your life. Vox Sola. Star Trek has presented us with more aliens that we can count. But most of these have been humanoid. Even the exceptions—Tholians, Excalbians, even Species 8472—are still easy for us to imagine being real… somewhere out there. In the first-season Enterprise episode “Vox Sola,” the writers and creative team attempted to give us, as Brannon Braga put it, “a wildly alien alien.” The title of this episode is Latin for “lone voice,” and is one of just seven episodes with Latin names—and possibly the best. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Phillip Gilfus, Tommy Kraft, and Suzanne Abbott to discuss just how unique this story is within Star Trek, how difficult it is to present truly alien life, the production challenges of turning plastic wrap into a villain, as well as the technology sneak peeks and ethically building blocks of this early mission of the NX-01. In our news segment we reflect on the 20th anniversary of the TNG finale, "All Good Things…", some unique ships coming to The Official Starships Collection—including the 22nd-century Romulan Bird-of-Prey and the Krenim timeship from Voyager's "Year of Hell," and the big plans that are afoot over at Star Trek: Phase II.
Organians on Enterprise. Enterprise is known for bringing back alien races from The Original Series that were more or less ignored by the rest of Star Trek. Andorians, Orions, Tholians, and Gorn all come to mind. But these aren't the only classic races to make an appearance in the 22nd century. The Organians, those energetic agricultural pacifists from "Errand of Mercy," also paid a visit to the NX-01—only it happened in an episode that is easy to overlook. In this episode of Warp Five we're joined by Michael Fisher to discuss the Organians, their background in Star Trek prior to "Observer Effect," how they compare to the Q Continuum, what they were doing on Enterprise, and why—no matter what happens—someone always dies.
The Enterprise encounters a ghost ship, and Kirk gets caught on it. It's up to Spock and McCoy to get him back, but can they conquer their own differences first? Plus, madness is hitting the crew and the Enterprise is being webbed in by Tholians! Lots happening as we put The Tholian Web in the Mission Log.
