Send in your music story!A name that sounds like a solo act but moves like a band: Lauren Nicole joins us to unpack how a family-first rock project found its voice in 90s alt grit, pop clarity, and the kind of bridges that turn songs into memories. From kicking in the womb to Springsteen's beat to taking the stage at eleven, Lauren's path blends fearless beginnings with a modern, DIY engine—co-producing with her drummer husband, Jim, and partnering with veteran producer Dick Hodgin to drop just the right “specials” where a track needs to snap.We dive into the new EP, Preserve Love Here, and why each of its three songs stands alone while threading a bigger story: unapologetic self-love, intimate partnership, and protecting the spaces that keep you grounded. State of Preservation hits like a jolt of energy; Here With You glows with 90s DNA and a lyrical first line that opens the door to the whole emotional house. Lauren breaks down her process—mood first, chords second, words that arrive fast when the moment is real—and explains why she champions the bridge as the place where a song finally says what it's been trying to say all along.Expect talk of influences that actually shaped the craft: Christina Aguilera's vocal athleticism, Jenna McDougall's lyric reach in Tonight Alive, and a dream of a dark-acoustic collab with Meg Myers. We trade summer anthems, monster-truck bangers, and march-ready rally songs, then circle back to the heart of it all: a band that produces itself, protects its vision, and loves rock enough to keep it honest. If you crave big choruses, sharp metaphors, and a thoughtful studio process, queue this one up and tell us—are you Team Hook or Team Bridge?Enjoyed the conversation? Interview by Kyra-Jade CoombsYOU ME AT SIX – Josh FranceschiYou Me at Six are due to start their Australian tour for the first time in 5 years this July in Perth on the 9th and finishing up in Melbourne on the 16th. It's been a long-awaited return for the band and fans alike. Heavy took the chance to catch up with Josh Franceschi to chat about the upcoming tour and some insight on their newest album, Truth Decay.Australia has been a home away from home for the boys. Our knack for being welcoming and laid back has always been something Josh looks forward to and this time around they get to enjoy our ‘colder' weather instead of coming in the guts of our Aussie summers! There's always been a connection between You Me at Six and our Australian bands. Whether it be on our home shores or abroad they've always clicked and ‘banded' with our musos. We touched on playing shows or festivals with Parkway Drive, Yours Truly, Tonight Alive, Northlane and Tame Impala, for balance of course. One thing that stood out for me was Josh mentioning our (bands) have this self-sufficient ‘fuck this, we just got to do it ourselves' attitude that isn't waiting for anyone to sign them… actually getting out there making their dreams come true by themselves. This made me feel a huge sense of pride about our musicians. He isn't wrong, we have so many amazing bands that spend day in and out grinding to make it in this industry.Truth Decay has amassed millions of streams on platforms, and I wondered how this resonated with You Me at Six. Josh made a really good point in stating that this really didn't mean ‘fuck all'. A song can stream well and in a live environment can fall dead. He would rather gauge a songs success in how it is received playing a show, when they feel most connected to their fans. Seeing fans singing along to an album with all their heart when it's only just been released means so much more then any stream would. You Me and Six are just shy of being together for 20 years and I wondered how they nurtured their professional and personal relationship together to which Josh replied, “Our collective goal is to take care of one another verses anything else”. Keeping everything equal and fare, talking through decisions and never disrespecting one another for something that might feel ‘good' at the time. They've known each other since they were kids and treat each other as if there are truly family. “I could pick up the phone at anytime to their parents and know full well I'm doing right by their sons”. Being kind and respectful comes first and the music goes with this. I feel a lot of bands could learn from this way of thinking. There's plenty more covered in the full interview, have a listen and enjoy.

After a four-year wait, Mitch James has released his second studio album, patience. The album arrives half a decade after James' breakout single, 'No Fixed Abode', and is the work of an artist who's emerged from various private and professional challenges with a greater sense of purpose. The 27-year-old James lives in the Auckland suburb of Mission Bay, but he created much of patience in Los Angeles with producer and former Tonight Alive guitarist, Whakaio Taahi. This week we interview Aussie performer, Jenna McDougall (Tonight Alive, Hevenshe) to chat about her new independent project Hevenshe, creating new music and how she got to this amazing place in her career after numerous major and indie record deals, 4 albums and 8 consecutive years of heavy international touring. An advocate for individualism, equality, self-empowerment and holistic health, McDougall remains in full embrace of her social responsibility as an artist with a platform and she is a fascinating chat!
We had the pleasure of interviewing Jenna McDougall of Hevenshe over Zoom video. You know her as the explosive frontwoman of the worldwide adored, internationally recognised punk-rock band, Tonight Alive. Stepping outside of the walls of the world she has built for herself over the last 14 years, Jenna McDougall emerges from musical hiatus to birth her new independent project, Hevenshe. Hevenshe (Heaven – she, a mirrored expression of Divine Feminine) offers us a bold delivery of original, open letter artistry, both lyrically striking and sonically timeless. Welcoming the entire spectrum of emotion, McDougall once again invites her beloved audience into tell-all melodic journeys, rippling with transcendence. Hevenshe is simultaneously a departure from McDougall's punk-emo roots and a continuation of her original mission: self-empowerment and emotional freedom. Hevenshe is a self-managed and independently released project on the artist's budding label PREMA Records. For the first time in over a decade, McDougall is experiencing what it's like to be an unestablished artist. This seems to excite, rather than intimidate her. “No One Will Ever Love You” brings a level of familiarity & comfort. With 4 years between musical releases, Hevenshe will have you hooked with her signature vocals, relatable lyrics and cathartic compositions. Equal parts tenacity and tenderness, this song covers themes of both heartbreak and acceptance, with a message that McDougall was denied to deliver. She agreed this outlet was therapeutic for her & hopes it will be the same for listeners. Having been off the road for three years, McDougall says she is “Ready to thrust my creative life into the public space again. I want to perform. It's a huge part of me and how I experience the world. I love connecting with people, I love travelling and I love performing. I can't get enough of it! So, I want to make up for lost time.” We want to hear from you! Hey there friends! Welcome to the 14th edition of Flashback Fridays! I am way late on this one, but I suppose better late than never. Today, I'm highlighting a record that came out in the year 2013. This was a fantastic year for music. I just looked at the playlist that I made for the year 2013 and it is completely stacked. There is a ton of music on that thing. I had a lot of favorite records that year, one being the Paramore Self-Titled record. I think that record is their best record. Their opus, if you will. But, today, I'm highlighting another female-fronted band from Australia. The record comes from the band Tonight Alive on Fearless Records. The album is called "The Other Side". The record was released on September 6th. It was produced by Dave Petrovic and mixed by Dan Korneff. The Other Side is the second studio album by Australian rock band Tonight Alive. This record sounds amazing. It's got guitar riffs. This band grew up listening to bands like Thrice and Rufio and you can hear the influence in their music. The album is full of hooks. Jenna McDougall has a fantastic voice. She's got her own voice, too. She's not just another Hailey Williams. McDougall explained that there is "a lot more cohesive [because] I know my voice a lot better. I'm excited because the songs have got a very pop structure but [they've] still got a lot of edge."Vocalist Jenna McDougall spoke to Alternative Press about the record:"There are definitely some sad songs on the album, and I think there are a few heartbreakers, but there are also songs like 'The Fire' that's a super-liberating, empowering punk song. I'm so proud of that song because the lyrics are really passionate, affirmative and positive, but the music is really aggressive. "...but I think this album is really about finding our sound but at the same time also accepting that we don't have one particular sound. Not all our songs are going to be the same, and you can't put them under the same umbrella. Some of them are poppy, some of them are really heavy and some of them are somewhere in the middle. We found a balance on this record, and I'm proud of that because I think it's just being true as human beings. You can be at both ends of the scale." In the 90's, the metal god, Rob Halford teamed up with John 5(then John Lowery)and acclaimed producer/musician, Bob Marlette to make the band ‘Two'. The band recorded an extremely underrated album called “Voyeurs” with Trent Reznor(NIN) at the helm and disbanded soon after the album released and some touring. This album captivated me and the collaboration had me curious for some time. Getting a chance to talk to Bob Marlette about this album became so much more, due to his incredible career working with some of the biggest names in music, even our own John Farnham and Tonight Alive as well as Airbourne. He has worked also with Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, Tracy Chapman, Atreyu and so many more. He's humble, happy and full of spirit. This was a joyous chat. Enjoy!
My guest today is Stan Bicknell. Stan is a NZ born drummer who for the past 13 years has based himself out of Melbourne Australia. In this time he has toured and recorded with many artists locally and internationally including 48May, Miami Horror, Tonight Alive, Ecca Vandal, and Kimbra. During his time with Kimbra, Stan played on her acclaimed debut album ‘Vows'. His Motown grooves can be heard on the track ‘Cameo Lover' which won both an Aria and APRA award, as well as playing on her now iconic ‘Sing Sing' sessions on YouTube, clocking up millions of views. Stan has a strong online presence, which in 2018 was noticed by Jared Falk, the owner and creator of Canadian based drum education platform ‘Drumeo'. Jared invited Stan on to Drumeo where he spent two days performing and recording songs and courses based on his ability behind the kit, and his unique single kick technique that has since taken the drumming community by storm. Stan is a frequent performer at drum festivals as well as where he likes to share his unique approach to the drums, and his strong mindset that goes with it. Now based back in Papamoa NZ, Stan is excited to be back home. Already he's been called in as backup for NZ drum and bass juggernauts, Shapeshifter, as well as kicking off a couple of new projects himself. Stan's a coffee nut, an incredibly gifted musician and just a bloody nice guy. So here he is, Ladies and gentleman. Its Mr Stan Bicknell. This conversation was recorded 10/02/2021. Intro song: "Hey Zeus" by Stan Bicknell and Josh De La Victoria. Jordan Kelsey Knight is an amazing photographer with a story like no other. She's worked with Nicole Richie, House of Harlow 1960, Hoodie Allen, Chase Atlantic, Tonight Alive, and many more. I love her path of stopping at nothing to find her passion in photography. Beyond work, we talk about the importance of taking care of yourself both mentally and physically. She also gives incredible advice to all creatives chasing a similar path. If you like this episode, help spread the word! Share it, tell a friend, give a handwritten link to a carrier pigeon and send it someone you love. All that stuff helps a ton! I'm @andrew_ftw and she's @jordankelseyknight

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to another episode of the Deconstructed Drummer. I'm Jeff Doukakis, and thanks for checking it out. This is a conversation with Lozz Benson. Lozz is a fantastic drummer, singer and songwriter who has a pretty incredible list of artists she's worked with, including John Butler Trio, Urthboy, Missy Higgins, Tonight Alive, as well as recording with Paul Kelly, Sandy Evans, All our exes live in Texas and many more. You can also check out her own projects - Benson and the Outlaws, Ginger Jones and that redhead. I'd followed Lozz for a little while now, but what really made me sit up and take notice was when I saw a blog appear - called “Touring: A Lifestyle”, which is about wellbeing both on and off the road. The conversation about mental health is one that has been steadily opening up more and more, and something that I've talked about a lot on this podcasts, and Lozz has been really upfront and open on the blog about her own journey, and also has interviewed some amazing musicians about how they've managed to work long term with touring. Lozz was kind enough to sit down and have a chat about all things music, touring, mental health, creativity, songwriting and a bunch of other stuff as well too. She's also got a lot of really great practical information as well. It was a pleasure chatting with Lozz, and I think you'll dig it. Please enjoy my conversation with Lozz Benson. Yeah, you read that right, Sydney pop punks Heroes For Hire are getting back together again for a string of Official Farewell Shows in December and you better believe we're fuckin excited for them. Joining us on the show EXCLUSIVELY this week is frontman Brad Smith who is talking all about the reunion including how the idea came about, what happened back in 2013 when he was publically ousted from the band which consequently lead to their demise and if this is a one-time only opportunity or if there'll be more tours in future. For the band's longterm fans, this is an opportunity for you to catch the guys one last time up the East Coast of Australia and relive the memories you had watching them explode back in the day. The guys played stacks of music festivals and toured with some pretty big names in the business, we ever get a sneak peek of the setlist too, so strap yourself in for nostalgia overload. Podcast host Browny also discusses the NSW Police and Government's ridiculous rules and regulations which have consequently resulted in under 18-year-old patrons no longer being allowed to attend the first Good Things Festival in Sydney and asks for music fans and listeners to join a petition to try and convince the State Government and NSW Police to rethink their strategies and work cooperatively with festival organisers to so they can make the festival an All Ages event again. There's also plenty of bangin' tunes to get you through your day including New Music from Tired Lion, Fever 333 and Papa Roach, throwbacks from blink-182, Sum 41, Zebrahead, Between You and Me, Paramore, State Champs, Tonight Alive, Storm The Sky and heaps more... #WoSUATW #BradSmith #HeroesForHire #PopPunk #AustralianBands #ExclusiveInterview #blink182 #Sum41 #BetweenYouAndMe #BYAM #StateChamps #Paramore #TonightAlive #Trophy Eyes #Zebrahead #PapaRoach #StormTheSky #Fever333 #TheFever333 #TiredLion #MusicPodcast #GoodThingsFest #RedJumpsuitApparatus #WallOfSoundAU

"We went through so much... We had no choice but to be honest about it. I think that's what carried us through such an intense time.""It's become a daily practice for me to have hard conversations - being honest no matter what the consequence is."Who could have predicted the weight that 'Underworld', the fourth album from Tonight Alive, would carry? Vocalist Jenna McDougall poured her heart and soul into the album to make sure it truly reflected the turbulence she'd been experiencing prior to its creation - but how has she come through those periods of darkness since the album's release?
