I speak to Rob and Jamie from the podcast Totalus Rankium. Their show is a light hearted ranking of every Roman Emperor from Augustus to Constantine XI. It's a really fun listen and they include all the amusing stories which I edited out of Byzantine history. They have a sister show where they rank American Presidents. Find both shows here. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We hope you are all enjoying the festive season! We have a very special Christmas present for you all this year, and it's the gift of the scandal, skullduggery and saucy shenanigans that are in store as we commence our much-anticipated spinoff series ranking all the official mistresses of France from Agnès Sorel to Madame du Barry.Thank you to Rob from the Totalus Rankium podcast for composing our theme for this new series! This episode is just a teaser for what awaits you if you sign up to the "Boudoir" tier on our Patreon, or any of the above tiers. The full first episode is out now, and our episode on our first contestant Agnès Sorel will be out in 2 weeks' time.Support the show⚜️CATEGORIESBen and Eliza each give a score out of 10 for the first 4 categories. The 5th is determined by maths! The result is a total score out of 100. Enchanté: The shallow, first-impressions round: How fabulous and iconic an image have they passed down to us? En Garde: (A.K.A. “Selfish Wins”) How well did they gain and increase their personal power, either through scheming, statesmanship or good old fashion battles? Voulez-Vous: (A.K.A. “Selfless Wins”) How much would we want to live under their regime? How well did they better the world around them through law reforms and cultural projects? Ouh-Là-Là: How pearl-clutchingly scandalous were the events of their life, both in their time and down through the ages? How mad, bad and dangerous were they to know? La Vie en Throne: How many years did they reign, and how many of their children survived them? Bonjour and bienvenue to Battle Royale, where we pass judgement on all the kings and emperors of France from Clovis to Napoleon III. If you're familiar with other history podcasts like Rex Factor (which reviews the British monarchs), Pontifacts (which rates the Popes) or Totalus Rankium (which ranks the Roman emperors), you'll already have a good idea about what we do! I, Ben, am the history buff who recounts the story of each monarch to my friend Eliza, and then we give them some scores in a variety of categories like En Garde (how good were they at fighting for prestige and power) or Oh La La (how scandalicious the events of their life were). But the stakes are higher high here – perhaps higher than any other podcast you've ever listened to! All 71 of our monarchs are locked in our imaginary dungeon, awaiting our judgement. Those who we deem to be the crème de la crème will go through to the Battle Royale Tournament, and compete to see who was the most majestic, fabulous and irresistible despot of them all. Those who do not will be sent to… the guillotine! As I record this little intro, we are about 6 months into this project. In that time, I have learned a lot about researching, writing and producing compelling history on an audio medium, and both Eliza and I have grown more comfortable recording ourselves. I do love our earlier episodes – the first few are some of the best, actually, particularly our special episode on the murderous queen Fredegund. But if you just want to dip your toe in it might be best to start with a later episode, like our 2-parter on Charlemagne (episode 16), which we purposely made accessible to new listeners. By then, we've mostly figured out a few of our audio issues, and we've been able to access more sources through friends and historians we've met through the podcast. However you choose to listen, we hope you enjoy coming along on our macabre adventure from the Dark Ages to the French Revolution, and help us decide who's ahead and who's headless at Battle Royale: French Monarchs. (No actual monarchs were harmed in the making of this podcast)

Amanda Litherland speaks to two innovative audio makers. Ross Sutherland reveals some of the thinking behind his puzzling new fiction podcast 'The Golden House' - a mini series from Imaginary Advice stuffed full of codes and secrets. Later, the award winning documentary producer Cathy Fitzgerland discusses her latest project 'Witness' in association with Amnesty International - a podcast which skilfully tells sensitive stories from some of the world's darkest places. Cathy also speaks about how she came to work in audio, and shares her advice on creating great listening, such as Life On Lockdown for Radio 4. Then Podcast Radio Hour producer Chris Pearson joins Amanda to go through a few of your recommendations for innovative podcasts, including Giant, The Friendship File Podcast, and Totalus Rankium.

Pope Gregory I, the second pope to earn “the Great” epithet, and like our first Great Pope Leo, he had a prolific career before becoming pope, including holding the highest civic office in Rome and serving as an apocrisiarius in Constantinople. But neither of these were jobs he wanted because he much preferred a monastic life, removed from the world. Imagine his disappointment when he is acclaimed as the next pope! In his episode, we discuss Gregory’s efforts to defend the whole of Italy from Lombard aggression through military strategy and co-opting secular authority, the evangelization of Britain through bad dad puns, more miracles than you can shake a stick at, hot grapes and too many eyes. And thanks to Ben Vanbuskirk of Fukushima Laser Shark for our Gregory Ditty, and Totalus Rankium for Gregory singing!
Last week, 1865 writers and co-creators Steve Walters and Erik Archilla spoke with the hosts of the podcast Totalus Rankium--an irreverent and often cheeky revue of American presidents from a Brittish perspective. These two gents, Rob and Jamie, rank each president in categories of statesmanship, scandal, how Hollywood-ready they are, and how good their official portrait is.The podcast aired over the weekend, but Rob and Jaimie were kind enough to allow me to rebroadcast the episode on our feed. I hope you enjoy it, and if you do, be sure to subscribe to Totalus Rankium--they’ve just finished their ranking of Rutherford B Hayes, who of course succeeded Ulysses S Grant, who of course succeeded Andrew Johnson. It’s a great show, amusing but informative, much like their conversation with Steve and Erik.1865 is an Airship production. The name says it all... or does it? Re-released to include the Hilarius sketch and song from Rob and Jaime at Totalus Rankium! (From episode 81. Anthemius: https://totalusrankium.podbean.com/e/81-anthemius/)
We return to the fray with the most excellent Rob and Jaime to tackle Dr Radness' favourite emperor. How will Tiberius fare against the criteria of Totalus Rankium? We're about to find out! How great is Tiberius? Tune in to find out! How are we judging Tiberius? Oooo better not to ask me, Dr G, author of this post, because I'm too much of an Augustan fan-girl to answer this question. Okay, okay, here's how it will work. We'll discuss Tiberius' life and career and at the end of the conversation we'll apply the Totalus Rankium system to form a holistic judgement of the imperial man himself. Here are the categories: Fights Maximus - an emperor's fighting capacity Opprobrium Crazium - their average level of insanity / taking things just too far Succesus Ultimus - how successful were they (all things considered)? Image Facius - were they attractive? Yes, this is the sexy category An Origin Story Like many people, Tiberius rises from humble beginnings. We'll explore the nature of his childhood and consider how this may have influenced his character and disposition (a very Suetonian approach if we do say so ourselves). We're on the search for clues that may help us better understand the complex influences on his life. Tiberius Imperator Some argue that Tiberius is the first emperor of Rome because he is the first to 'inherit' the legal privileges and concessions that secured Augustus' rule. This is important as it reveals the tenuous nature of the imperial project in these early stages. The differences between Augustus and Tiberius are revealed the moment Tiberius becomes emperor. Part of the challenge when examining his rule is the underlying consideration: what makes a good emperor? We'll consider some of Tiberius' achievements and also some of the more controversial aspects of his rule in this collaborative episode. You just never know what controversy is in the wind when we're talking about Tiberius! The Story of Leo, Michael and Thomas comes to end in this exciting episode of Totalus Rankium. Was the prophecy of the monk-in-a-cave-up-a-pole correct? How did Thomas die? Was it horribly? Horribly, horribly? And just how important is Crete and Sicily anyway?
James Buchanan has not gone down too well in history. His name is synonymous with the onset of the civil war. But was he really that bad? Well... quite possibly. But just how bad? I mean, his early life, surely that was not too bad? Find out in this week's Totalus Rankium!
Leo, Michael and Thomas are three friends that share a prophesy - Leo and Michel will rule and Thomas will die horribly - horribly horribly. Rome was entrenched in chaos, until one man took charge, and through sheer force of will - and the army - remade the Empire into a completely new government, one that would last for over a thousand years. Then he retired to farm cabbages, moving into an incredible palace on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, a palace which today forms the core of Split, Croatia's old town. Rob and Jamie from the Totalus Rankium podcast drop by once again to discuss Diocletian, one of the most significant emperors, whose legacy paved the way to medieval Europe. We dig into the good, like his bureaucratic reforms, the bad, like his persecution of Christians, and the ugly, like his edict on prices. Listener Hrvoje Tolić calls in to discuss Split, the sights, and the cuisine. Pašticada, a long-marinated beef roast served over njoki, is the recipe of the day.
As we have mentioned recently on social media, the great Matt Smith has agreed to join the Saga Thing team and provide us with an original drawing for each saga episode. We’re excited to be working with him. You’ll get a fuller appreciation of each image he creates for us by listening to the episode. I don’t think you’ll be surprised to hear that this image was inspired by one of the climaxes of the saga. One of the climaxes? Yes. Just one of many. Thanks again to Matt for donating his time and talents. Matt wrote and illustrated Barbarian Lord, a graphic novel heavily inspired by the Icelandic Sagas. You can see more of his work here: matt-illustrations.com. Welcome to the team, Matt! If you like what he's doing for Saga Thing, drop him a line and express your appreciation on Twitter, where he's @barbarianlord. In this episode, we discuss the first half of Kjalnesinga saga (The Saga of the People of Kjalarnes). You’re not alone if the name doesn’t ring a bell. This saga isn’t widely read or commented upon, despite being full of interesting tidbits for further discussion. For example, Kjalnesinga saga is the only saga whose action takes place within the modern boundaries of Reykjavík. If you’ve been to Iceland’s capital, then you’ve no doubt seen the impressive Mount Esja (Esjan) looming across the bay. This saga offers some clues about where the mountain and the places around it got their names, at least according to the saga author. In addition to some fascinating toponomy, Kjalnesinga saga looks into the lives of the first two generations of settlers in Kjalarnes, starting with Helgi Bjolan and a group of Irish immigrants that he graciously welcomes into his land. The majority of the action concerns the children of these initial settlers. Here’s a quick key for those of you who have trouble keeping track of all the names. As if a genealogical tree wasn’t enough, we’ve also got a map of Kjalarnes for you, generously prepared for us by Rob from Totalus Rankium podcast, using Emily Lethbridge's Icelandic Saga Map. to get a sense of the region and who lives where. Rob is an unofficial/official member of the Saga Thing team. We look forward to more awesome maps from Rob for future episodes. If you find these maps helpful, let Rob know on Twitter, where he's @TotalusRankium. When you've finished digesting all this great info, give the episode a listen. Kjalnesinga saga features a vivid description of a pagan temple, rising tensions between Irish Christian immigrants and the just-a-little-less-recently-immigrated pagan Icelanders, one of our more violent slayings (which is really saying something), an official holmgang, and our first ever love quadrangle…or square, if you will. There’s plenty here for everyone. Because we promised a link to our Saga Brief on the holmgang, as if you haven't already heard it, I'm providing it. John put no effort or time into providing this link, just as I suspected.
