Warren Zanes is a “rockstar biographer” in more ways than one: he has experienced life as a rockstar, a biographer, and a biographer of rockstars. When Mack first met Warren in New Orleans sometime in the late 80s or early 90s, Zanes was then emerging from the wreckage of meteoric success. He'd been the teenage guitarist in critically acclaimed band The Del Fuegos, who briefly broke into the national popular consciousness—and then just plain broke up. But in the years since, Zanes remade himself into one of our most erudite and entertaining public scholars of popular music. Among other things, he's been Vice President of Education and Public Programs at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a consulting producer on the Oscar-winning film Twenty Feet from Stardom, a producer on the Grammy-nominated PBS/Soundbreaking series, and he conducted interviews for Martin Scorsese's George Harrison documentary. All while keeping up a solo recording career with collaborators such as the Dust Brothers. Warren's books include the first volume in the celebrated 33 1/3 Series, Dusty in Memphis; Petty: The Biography and Revolutions in Sound: Warner Bros. Records. His latest book is called Deliver Me from Nowhere. On its face, it's a book about the making of Bruce Springsteen's classic lo-fi album Nebraska. But it's also about sound technology, musicianship teetering in a moment between the analog and digital eras, what it means to be in a band, and the relationship between the four-track cassette recorder and social alienation in Reagan era. In this interview, Warren talks about his journey, the recent book, his craft as a writer, and—as part of our mini-theme this season on audiobooks—the process of narrating his own audiobooks and why he does so. And for our Patrons we'll have Warren's What's Good segment, with something good to read, listen to, and do. You can join us at patreon.com/phantompower. Hello and welcome to the Flaghunters Golf Podcast ! My name is Jesse Perryman and it's my honor and passion to bring you truthful insights to help make you a better player ! Today on the Pod we have Mr. Lou Stagner. Lou notably is the Data lead at ArccosGolf, which is a Golf stat tracking program that is in or at the end of your grip. Lou also is the Assistant Coach for the Golf team at Princeton. Lastly, Lou rounds it off with his Podcast called, “Hack It Out”. Lou has my favorite Twitter account. Why you ask ? Well, he posts some crazy stats. His stats are usually ranged per handicap genre. For example, Lou will post proximity to the hole from 100 yards, 150 yards, etc, per handicap range. Let's say you're a 5. Lou will post some percentages for your handicap family based on data from ArccosGolf and formulate proximity stats, putting stats, averages greens in regulation stats and so on. What's interesting to me about Lou's postings are the Tour stats. I would've thought that the best players in the World would have these incredible stats. For example, do you know what the average proximity is from 100 yards for PGA Tour and LPGA Tour is ? I would've thought it'd be inside of 10-15 feet. Stats prove otherwise. The best in the World average TWENTY FEET !!! How about putting ? Let's say your average Tour Pro has an 8 foot putt. Do you know what his/her make percentage is ? Around 50 percent. I would've thought it be much higher !! Lou also has my favorite hashtag on Social Media. It's called, manage your expectations ! When I look at his stats postings, I look at the example about as it relates to the best in the World from 100 yards. If I hit it 20 feet, I can tell myself that this is the Tour average. I can cut myself a break if I miss an 8 foot putt because the best make this putts HALF the time ! I hear so many players berate themselves for missing putts around or under 10 feet ! What Lou provides is a valuable service from the perspective of taking some pressure off when you play. Golf is a hard game and management of your expectations is a huge, golf/life affirming skill that can be learned. You can find Lou easiest on his Twitter @LouStagner. I highly encourage all to go and do a bit of contemplation on some of Lou's stats. I promise it will help you put some things on the golf course in perspective and help you to play better ! Lisa Fischer has sung backing vocals for Dolly Parton, Bobby McFerrin, Luther Vandross and Beyoncé. She's also toured with the Rolling Stones since 1989, going from one swanky hotel to another, "eating caviar for breakfast" and playing sold out stadiums. “I feel like a normal girl,” she says, “visiting for a very long time in the not-normal world.” It wasn't the world she came from. Lisa grew up in Brooklyn. Her mom was pregnant with her at 15, and had two more children by the time she was 19. Money was tight, and when Lisa was 14, her father left. Her mom started drinking heavily, and died three years later after complications from seizures. By her mid-twenties, she was touring as a backup singer, and in 1991 she won a Grammy for her first solo album, So Intense. But soon after, she lost her record deal, and returned to singing backup. The 2013 documentary Twenty Feet from Stardom highlighted some of the glory, and struggle, that came with her years on the road. "When I think about the money that I have gone through I have to laugh to myself," she told me during our conversation. "I don't like to look at how much I have because it's never enough." This conversation took place in 2015. Listen to the end to hear an update from Lisa, about getting back on stage during the pandemic and the financial realities of being a musician during COVID. Below, watch Lisa Fischer on stage with the Rolling Stones, and singing with Luther Vandross.
This episode is dedicated to all those taking a stand in the #menopauserevolution Joanne Bozeman introduces herself to us: “I grew up in a musical home with lots of singing in our daily life, and great music playing on the stereo. I trained at University as a Classical Singer, and performed a wide range of repertoire in my community and regionally. Neil Haley, The Total Tutor host of the Total Celebrity Show, interviewed Charlotte Crossley to find out details about the documentary, her experience filming it, and what it was like to be part of an Oscar winning film. Through hard work and determination, Crossley has been blessed to maintain longevity in the entertainment business. As a singer, her music credits include working with the likes of Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, Lainie Kazan, Muddy Waters, Sister's Love, Boz Scaggs, and Hiroshima. As an actress, she has appeared in films including The Preachers Wife, Beaches, Sister Act 1, Sister Act 2, When Harry Met Sally, Faster, and the Emmy Award-winning HBO film Behind the Candelabra. Her most recent film, the Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, was directed by Morgan Neville. It reveals the untold stories of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. “It is wonderful to be part of academy award-winning documentary," said Crossley. “ We told Morgan this piece was Oscar worthy, so get ready to walk and get that statue. It sets the bar for achievement for the rest of your life.” During the interview, Crossley explained that the film is a documentary story of 6 background singers. The documentary covers 50 years of background singing, showing how they all got their start. The movie discusses the struggles, the high lows, about being forgotten, and always being 20 feet from the star. She also talked about how music was made and how black singers went to where the work was, not vice versa. “Being a background singer we had to cover the stars,” Crossley said. "We covered the likes of the Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson. CEO of Simply G Media, GJ Reynolds said, "Charlo stayed the course, and ended up landing on a star."
The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview The Last Supreme Susaye Green. Neil will interview Susaye to find out about The Supremes, Twenty Feet From Stardom, and Her latest album. Born in Houston, Texas, she began her professional career at the age of 12 years. After moving to New York City as a teenager, she appeared in various commercials and attended and graduated from the New York City High School of Performing Arts. Prior to joining The Supremes, Greene sang with Ray Charles' Raelettes and Stevie Wonder's Wonderlove, which paired her with Deniece Williams and Shirley Brewer. In 1973, she sang lead as a guest vocalist on New Birth's hit "Until It's Time for You to Go" (a cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie's song). A successful singer and songwriter as well, Greene has written hit records for Michael Jackson, Deniece Williams, and many others. Greene was a member of The Supremes from early 1976 to summer of 1977 (replacing Cindy Birdsong), and performed on their last two albums, High Energy and Mary, Scherrie & Susaye. Working alongside original member Mary Wilson and Scherrie Payne, Susaye quickly found her niche in the group and amongst the group's legions of fans. Susaye took lead on "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother," in the group's live shows, which never failed to garner a standing ovation, and recorded "High Energy", the title song from the High Energy album. On June 12, 1977, the Supremes performed their farewell concert at the Drury Lane Theater in London and disbanded.

The 86th Academy Awards Kicks Off The Oscars, one of the biggest events on the film festival circuit, has just ended this year's run. Zhang Ru has the details. Reporter: On March 2 local time, the 86th Academy Awards raised its curtains in Los Angeles. Bringing down many strong opponents, 12 Years A Slave won the best picture award at this year's Oscars. (best picture announcement) Based on a true story and directed by Briton Steve McQueen, it follows the life of Solomon Northup, a free black man in New York kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana. This period drama also won the title of best adapted screenplay. The best original screenplay prize went to the director of the film "Her", Spike Jonze. However, it was still a big night for Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity. This white-knuckle space thriller took home 7 Academy Awards out of ten nominations, including best director, best visual efforts and best cinematography. The film, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, won in many of the technical categories. (Gravity movie clip) The film's director Cuarón described shooting Gravity as transformative experience. (Curason speech) "Like any other human, ever make a film can be a transformative experience. And I want to thank Gravity. Because for many of us involved in this film, it was definitely a transformative experience. And it's good, because it took so long if it was not it would have been a waste of time. And what really sucks is that for a lot of these people, that transformation was wisdom but for me it was just the color of my hair!" Matthew McConaughey was named as best actor for his portrayal of an Aids activist in Dallas Buyers Club, beating fellow nominees Christian Bale, Bruce Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. And his co-star, Jared Leto won best supporting actor prize for his role as a transgender woman. In an emotional speech, Jared Leto thanked his mother for teaching him to dream while dedicating the film to those who suffer from the disease. (Leto) "This is for the 36 million people out there who have lost the battle to Aids, and those of you who have ever felt injustice because of who you are, or who you love. Tonight, I stand in front of the world with you, and for you." As for the ladies, Blue Jasmine star Cate Blanchett won her Oscar for best actress after beating off stiff competition from Amy Adams, Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench and Meryl Streep. Meanwhile, Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong'o earned the title of best supporting actress for her performance in her debut film 12 Years a Slave. ("12 Years a Slave" clip) Disney's blockbuster musical cartoon Frozen has been ruling the box office and was honored with the best animated feature award. Its tune, "Let it Go" won best original song. ("Let it Go") The award for the best foreign language film was handed to Italian movie The Great Beauty without a hitch, having already pocketed awards at the Golden Globes, European Film and British Academy Film Awards. ("The Great Beauty" clip) "Twenty Feet from Stardom" won for best documentary. And "The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life" won best documentary short. The Great Gatsby won best costume and production design while the make-up and hairstyling award went to Dallas Buyers Club.
