Warren Zanes is a “rockstar biographer” in more ways than one: he has experienced life as a rockstar, a biographer, and a biographer of rockstars. When Mack first met Warren in New Orleans sometime in the late 80s or early 90s, Zanes was then emerging from the wreckage of meteoric success. He'd been the teenage guitarist in critically acclaimed band The Del Fuegos, who briefly broke into the national popular consciousness—and then just plain broke up. But in the years since, Zanes remade himself into one of our most erudite and entertaining public scholars of popular music. Among other things, he's been Vice President of Education and Public Programs at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a consulting producer on the Oscar-winning film Twenty Feet from Stardom, a producer on the Grammy-nominated PBS/Soundbreaking series, and he conducted interviews for Martin Scorsese's George Harrison documentary. All while keeping up a solo recording career with collaborators such as the Dust Brothers. Warren's books include the first volume in the celebrated 33 1/3 Series, Dusty in Memphis; Petty: The Biography and Revolutions in Sound: Warner Bros. Records. His latest book is called Deliver Me from Nowhere. On its face, it's a book about the making of Bruce Springsteen's classic lo-fi album Nebraska. But it's also about sound technology, musicianship teetering in a moment between the analog and digital eras, what it means to be in a band, and the relationship between the four-track cassette recorder and social alienation in Reagan era. In this interview, Warren talks about his journey, the recent book, his craft as a writer, and—as part of our mini-theme this season on audiobooks—the process of narrating his own audiobooks and why he does so.  And for our Patrons we'll have Warren's What's Good segment, with something good to read, listen to, and do. Hill (Co-Host of the War Starts at Midnight podcast), to discuss Fight Club (1999) for its 25th Anniversary: directed by David Fincher, written by Jim Uhls, music by the Dust Brothers, starring Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter, and Meat Loaf.Plot Summary: Fight Club, directed by David Fincher, is a dark, visceral exploration of disillusionment and rebellion in a consumer-driven society. Edward Norton stars as an unnamed narrator, a corporate drone who feels trapped in the relentless cycle of modern capitalism. His insomnia and sense of detachment lead him to underground support groups, where he finds fleeting solace. Still, it's only when he meets the charismatic anarchist Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) that he feels truly alive.Tyler and the narrator start a "Fight Club," an underground fight society where men brawl to escape the numbness of their lives. What begins as cathartic release soon spirals into chaos as Tyler's influence over the narrator grows, drawing him into an increasingly violent, nihilistic philosophy.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome to Our Guests02:40 Cast and Recognition for Fight Club05:28 Relationship(s) with Fight Club10:38 What is Fight Club About?20:28 Does Fight Club Serve a Public Good?30:51 Plot Summary for Fight Club33:58 First Break34:46 What's Up with Andrew and Peterson40:20 Ask Dana Anything?46:32 Best Performance(s) of Fight Club01:03:05 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)01:11:21 Second Break01:12:22 In Memoriam01:18:25 Best/Funniest Lines01:23:37 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:34:21 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:41:36 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:45:47 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:59:25 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability02:03:08 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total02:05:47 Remaining Questions of Fight Club02:16:09 Thank You to Our Guests and Farewell02:18:56 CreditsGuests:Andrew CornsHost of the Revisionist Almanac@revalmanac on IG, X, YouTube, TikTok, and LetterboxdPreviously on Gaslight (1946) and Do the Right Thing (1989) RevisitPeterson W. Paul's Boutique by Beastie Boys, released in 1989, is a groundbreaking album that defied expectations with its dense, sample-heavy production. Moving away from the party-anthem style of their debut Licensed to Ill, the trio teamed up with production duo the Dust Brothers to create a sonic collage that blends funk, rock, jazz, and obscure records. Known for its intricate layering of samples and witty, freewheeling lyrics, the album was initially a commercial disappointment but has since been hailed as one of the most influential and innovative records in hip-hop history.Listen to the album on SpotifyListen to the album on Apple MusicWhat did you think of this album? Dave Ackley's paper Beyond Efficiency is three pages long. With just these three pages, he mounts a compelling argument against the conventional way we engineer software. Instead of inflexibly insisting upon correctness, maybe allow a lil slop? Instead of chasing peak performance with cache and clever tricks, maybe measure many times before you cut. So in this episode, we're putting every CEO in the guillotine… (oh, that stands for "correctness and efficiency only", don't put us on a list)… and considering when, where, and how to do the robust thing. Links $ patreon.com/futureofcoding — The most recent bonus episode is a discussion with Stefan Lesser about new "laws of physics" we can invent inside the computer. Don't destroy the earth, then make sure your thing can't be destroyed, then don't destroy your data, and finally, do your damn job, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. A Software Epiphany, and the accompanying HN discussion — giga viral, so sick PartyKit? Nice! What started as a simple todo list turned into an ocean of tech boy milk and, ultimately, the AI apocalypse. Jepsen is a rough, rugged, deeply thoughtful and fantastically cool approach to distributed systems testing, by Kyle Kingsbury. Also, we didn't talk about it, but his reversing / hexing / typing / rewriting / unifying technical interview series is essential reading. Ivan's examples of robustness vs efficiency were RAID, the CAP theorem, Automerge, the engineering of FoundationDB, and Byzantine fault tolerance— all of which stake out interesting territory in the efficiency/robustness tradeoff spectrum, all of which are about distributed systems. Can programming be liberated from the von Neumann style?, a paper by John Backus. We Don't Really Know How to Compute!, a talk by Gerald Sussman. The Robust-First Computing Creed is rock solid. The Wikipedia article on von Neumann architecture did not come through with the goods. Ivan works with Alex Warth now, and thus may fairly speak in half-truths like "I've been working with constraints recently…" The Demon Hoard Sort Bogosort is never coming to Dreamberd The Witness was made by Jonathan Blow, who has Aphantasia, but he also made a game called Braid, and Braid is good. Datamosh is a creative misuse of the lack of robustness that comes from storing diffs instead of full state snapshots. Here's a lovely gallery of examples. Abstraction by xkcd Reverse Engineering the source code of the BioNTech/Pfizer SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Can't let Lu get through the above without derailing onto Fiverr, PCP, Fight Club, and the Dust Brothers. As the refrain "I'm a loser, baby..." echoed around the world in 1994, it was easy to assume that Beck might be here today, gone tomorrow as a slacker one-hit wonder on MTV's buzz clip floor. But Beck proved us wrong when he dropped Odelay in 1996, as teenagers now shouted "I've got two turntables and a microphone!" With that, Beck was here to stay showing a cohesive, weird, genre-blending album with the signature hodgepodge samples and sounds by the Dust Brothers.

Oh, you better believe it. Steve Greenberg is here on the podcast today. Steve signed Hanson after checking them out at a local county fair- there would be no Hanson as we know them if not for Steve. A former rep for Mercury Records, Steve now has his own label- S-Curve Records. Steve brings an hour of fun, laughs, enthusiasm and passion into this episode, his love for Hanson and the Middle of Nowhere era is undeniably contagious. Tone Deaf:" Steve Greenberg, the executive producer on Hanson's album Middle of Nowhere, was convinced that if the band were to fulfil the potential that Christopher Sabec, the band's manager, first saw in them at SXSW, they'd need to have alt-cred. “We were coming out of this alternative rock moment, and everything was about alternative cred. People were very skeptical that we could do a pop record,” Greenberg recently told Broadly, who've published an oral history on ‘MMMBop'. Greenberg decided to assemble an alternative Justice League to spruce up the band's indie credentials. Having recently heard an advance of Beck's Odelay, Greenberg tapped the Dust Brothers to produce Middle of Nowhere. “It was the Dust Brothers' involvement that helped us achieve alternative cred,” said Greenberg. David Campbell, a composer who'd worked with Green Day and Hole, did arrangements for the album, and Tamra Davis (Sonic Youth, Veruca Salt) directed the ‘MMMBop' video. “Steve and I wanted to create a patina of hipness around a pop record. I think we picked exactly the right people,” said Mercury Records' Danny Goldberg. “They didn't try to make it like Nine Inch Nails or too hip. But they did add a hipness factor that smoothed the pathway to quick exposure in all aspects of the business.” More about Steve's Podcast: American Song Writer- " Grammy-Award winning Record Executive and Producer Steve Greenberg — the veteran music industry producer who helped launch the careers of Hanson, The Jonas Brothers, Joss Stone, Andy Grammer, AJR and many more — announced today the debut of “Speed of Sound.” The new iHeartRadio Original podcast explores how some of pop's biggest songs, bands and musical genres soared to the top of the charts. From The Beatles to disco, “The Twist” to hip-hop and beyond, Greenberg examines the unique historical circumstances, technological advances and trends that helped create some of music's most remarkable and unlikely success stories."

In 1992, Eddie Chacon broke out as one-half of Charles & Eddie, his soul music duo with Charles Pettigrew. Their single "Would I Lie to You?” was a major international hit. Chacon was just a kid growing up in Castro Valley, California, when he decided he would be a music star. Before meeting Pettigrew, Eddie had played in a teenage band with Cliff Burton and Mike Bordin, later of Metallica and Faith No More. He had an alliance with Luther Campbell of the infamous 2 Live Crew, worked with the Dust Brothers. These days, he's making oracular, synth driven soul music that draws equally on the mile deep grooves of Sly Stone's drum machine and the cosmic synth hymns of Alice Coltrane. His latest album is called Sundown, out now from Stones Throw. This week on Transmissions, Eddie joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss his partnership with producer John Carroll Kirby, his fascinating years in the music industry, and his collaborative work with his wife, Sissy Chacon.  Support Aquarium Drunkard on Patreon.

For the 150th Episode of the show we have the fabulous April March! In a former life April March must have been a rockier fairy than Tinker Bell and like a cat, she has already had several lives. An animator trained by Disney, she has animated for Pee-wee Herman, Ren & Stimpy, Madonna, worked on Archie Comics, assisted Spiderman creator Steve Ditko and even assisted the legendary Harry Smith who occasionally brought Allen Ginsberg in tow to mentor her. She entered the NYC music scene with her garage girl-group The Pussywillows, which Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes, promptly hired to record and perform with her. A year into her music career, she landed on stage with Ronnie Spector at a completely sold out Madison Square Garden. Over a large plate of chicken back stage, Bo Diddley said to her, “Welcome to Rock and Roll.” Next she joined The Shitbirds and The Haves, finally settling into the driver's seat as April March. A Francophile from a tender age, she re-introduced an international audience to the French pop heritage of Gainsbourg, Françoise Hardy, Dani, Gillian Hills and many others. She cut her teeth in self production on a slew of popular to very obscure covers and adaptations of songs the French themselves had forgotten. Quentin Tarantino plucked “Chick Habit,” her adaptation of Gainsbourg's “Laisse Tomber Les Filles,” to feature in his film “Death Proof.” She recorded “Chick Habit” with the help of Andy Paley who introduced her to Brian Wilson. This began a nice stretch of recording on and off with Brian for the next couple of years subsequently giving her a priceless education in both arrangement and production. So when Alexander Payne couldn't reach Brigitte Bardot on the phone he hired April instead to write and produce her own Bardotesque song for his film “Election.” Next she met the modern day French Phil Spector — Bertrand Burgalat (just as talented, but a lot less dangerous). She made two albums with Burgalat, the first of which “Chrominance Decoder,” was chosen as one of the top ten albums of the year by The New Yorker and in the top 100 of all time by the seminal French magazine Rock et Folk. Burgalat introduced her to the great Aquaserge which led to an album and two films directed by Marie Losier landing her performances at The Centre Pompidou, MOMA and PS1. And so at this point in time, April March has recorded with Ronnie Spector, Brian Wilson, Jonathan Richman, R.L. Burnside, Andy Paley, Bertand Burgalat, Tony Allen, Yo La Tengo, LL Cool J, Alain Chamfort, Darlene Love, The Dust Brothers, Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Maya Rudolph, Sean OHagan, and Aquaserge. After such a list of credits, certain artists would have rested on their laurels to the strains of “The Afternoon of a Faun,” but this Franco-American ringleader is a horse of a different color, preferring to go forward rather than look over her shoulder, which brings us to the latest. She has just been cast alongside Gerard Depardieu and Vanessa Paradis in a feature film. After having published a children's book with Jack White called “We Are Going To Be Friends,” she's recorded an E.P. with Olivia Jean in his private studio which he released March 5th with a Video following on March 17th on Third Man Records. She's releasing a new album with the amazing Fugu featuring Tony Allen of Fela and Gorillaz as well as Marilyn Wilson of The Beach Boys and American Spring on July 17th with Record Store Day. The cherry on top? It's another new album with the dazzling duo Staplin who, according to Radio France,“compose with talent music where pop sunshine melodies of the sixties dance on trip hop beats, psyche rock rubs shoulders with cosmic flights of evanescent synths, and repetitive orchestral music stretches to festive groove storms.” Olè !Make it stand out.

The Beastie Boys are a culture shifting band/group who started out as a punk group in the mid to late 80's, who switched to hip hop around the time they met Rick Rubin who we covered earlier this season. Beastie Boys first album had them penned as frat rap, so off of their first record label and away from Rick, they came back with a heavily sampled production by the Dust Brothers that changed the landscape of hip hop up until the Biz Markie lawsuit in the late 80's. Beastie was also responsible for young people across the world to steal Volkswagen and other emblems to wear as medallions on chains. Beastie Boys like them or not changed the landscape of hip hop. While not the first white hip hop artist they had the largest impact aside from Eminem who would come onto the scene ten plus years later. Beastie Boys; Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA thank you for everything you have giving to the culture and to the world. Come find out why this group didn't just make an impact in hip hop but on the world and used their voice for good. Before we've barely introduced the location of todays events (Great Orme/Little Orme), Moonwalker shares some personal woes in the first five minutes. Then as the probe begins, we explore what happened to a family driving down a long and lonesome road. Why would this family incur the wrath of the RAF? What was there a bug? If so, was it a bug of earthly or extraterrestrial origin, or was it a peppercorn? Only the dentist knows. After 1997, we pop back to 1982 and you know that Moonwalker has issues when we head back to '82. We also touch base in 2015 so this one gets around. You know what that means? Loads of credible evidence. This place is clearly a hot bed of UFO activity (Wales, that is - Greybeard definitely didn't get confused with a previous probe). Before that though, we get sidetracked on the facts of Glasgow and the worlds biggest drinking bars. We then get back to Igor, in the middle, of the road… On that note, did Igor drive a 1967 Shelby GT and is this a lovely motor or a pile of rusting trash? Whilst taking this ride, we also ponder whether Moonwalker would make love to a car and whether Greybeard is the Butt Smasher (of House Butt Smash - remember the previous episode). Just to add folks, we are aware that whales don't really have huge gaping butts. We know whales do mushy scale 5-6 poops and we don't really think that a human could be digested, pass through and come out of a whale whole. But Moonwalker could. We mean my gosh, have you seen the man? Knight Rider somehow comes up as we move on and we ask you, loyal probers, will Moonwalker review the whole series? We have some time left over after Igor vanishes so we then briefly covered Barry Macdonald and a sighting Barry was able to record due to going on a secluded wander with his lady-friend and coincidently having a video camera set up and ready to go. Of course, as we parodied the story we couldn't resist an instrumental snippet from Kyle Gass and Jack Black's rocking band Tenacious D's first single from their self-titled 2001 album, Tribute. Which is not the greatest song in the world, no, it's just a tribute. That song resides under Epic labels catalogue and was produced by the Dust Brothers. Check it out on all good streaming platforms, what a song! A bit of trivia for our UK listeners - Tribute was never actually released as a single in the UK despite its massive air time and popularity. Alongside that there was an ever so brief snippet from Mario Kart 64's Toad's Turnpike courtesy of Nintendo (and composed by Kenta Nagata) as we discussed traffic coming towards Igor. We also included, mainly for Moonwalker's benefit, a snippet of the Stuart Phillips composition, the theme from 1980's television staple Knight Rider starring David Hasselhoff. Wikipedia also lists Glen A. Larson as a composer of that iconic theme.
