Puis on regardera nos comptes. Equal parts sweet coming-of-age story and thoughtful, kid-friendly exploration of intersectional identity, QUEEN BEES OF TYBEE COUNTY is a celebration and imagination of a world in which we all get the support and affirmation we deserve. After making the buzzer-beating shot at the Georgia basketball state championships, Derrick Chan becomes the star of Bayard Middle School, and Derrick's single dad could not be prouder. But there are parts of Derrick that no one knows about, like the toenail polish he wears under his basketball sneakers, his secret lip-sync performances in the bathroom mirror, and the feelings he's developing for his best friend and teammate, JJ. As the school year comes to a close, Derrick's dad takes an out-of-town job and ships Derrick off to spend the summer with his estranged, eccentric grandmother, Claudia. Soon, Claudia introduces Derrick to the world of small-town southern beauty pageants, and Derrick suddenly feels he's found where he belongs. But when the opportunity arises to compete in the town pageant, Derrick is forced to decide just how much of himself he's ready to show the world. Can he learn to love and accept the most unique parts of himself? And what will happen if others—like his father and JJ—can't do the same? Join Tamara for an interview with Jason Bible, an Americana and rock singer-songwriter and instrumentalist who was born in Fort Worth, Texas. He began performing and recording music in the 90s - singing and playing guitar and harmonica. He left Texas and moved to Savannah in 2001 (due to a "banking issue"), and immediately began playing multiple shows a night, focusing on bars on River Street, and eventually out on the islands. In 2005 he formed the band The Train Wrecks, who are still going strong today. Nowadays you can catch Jason playing solo, with The Train Wrecks, *and*, recently, out playing Nirvana covers with his teenage son Jack. For Nikki, it was love at first sight when she first visited Savannah to plan a destination wedding downtown in April 2018. She and her husband decided to move and bought a house sight unseen in August 2018. In their new neighborhood, they were fortunate to find a fabulous group of neighbors, including the former owner of Savannah Window Fashions Jeanne Dunn. Nikki purchased Savannah Window Fashions in 2020 from Jeanne, leaving behind corporate life and a career in advertising. In Nikki's previous corporate life, she wore many hats. Advertising, project managing website builds at a digital agency, floral designer, non-profit economic development, event planning, and property management. Nikki is thrilled to take Savannah Window Fashions forward as the new owner. It was an unlikely career change, but perfect in so many ways. Nikki has always had a deep and abiding love for homes. As the granddaughter of a builder and daughter of a carpenter, she spent many summers on job sites as a kid. She adores Savannah, and her greatest desire is to build a business that contributes to the community by helping interior designers in the amazing work they do, providing top-notch, treatments for our local historic homes and properties, and making homes more beautiful and functional. Nikki is passionate about preserving the great skill and craft that goes into fabricating custom window treatments, and has a great desire to pass the knowledge on from her current team to a new generation of seamstresses and seamsters. When she's not living and breathing window treatments, Nikki loves exploring downtown and surrounding areas, spending time with animals (her family has one dog, three indoor cats, two porch cats, and two turtles), reading, and hosting friends and family on visits to Savannah. Nikki's husband, Ryan, works at Georgia Ports. They enjoy bike rides, spending time with friends and neighbors, beach days at Tybee, and exploring Savannah. Nikki's daughter, Zoe Greenwood, is a full time student at Georgia Southern Armstrong Campus, studying Political Science. Zoe also helps out at the family business part time. Ryan has a daughter attending Ohio State University and a son living in Dayton, Ohio. Nikki is a member of the Ardsley Park Garden Club and enjoys volunteering at and attending the home and garden tours put on by local clubs. Join Tamara for an interview with Kurtis Schumm, a 20-year Tybee Island resident who started his adolescence playing guitar in the "esteemed haunts of Nashville and beyond, including the famed Bluebird Cafe at 14." After moving here, he transitioned into a culinary career, opening Tybee Island Social Club with his wife and eventually running 4 successful restaurants at once. Just before Covid, they sold their restaurant concepts and Kurtis transitioned again, into a full-time art career. His work largely depicts female portraiture and an island aesthetic, and his materials are truly unique: epoxy and acrylic paints, and ink, on plexiglass. (And because he's painting on a clear surface, he works "backwards," i.e. painting in mirror image on the back side of his substrate.) Check out Kurtis's work and follow him here: https://www.instagram.com/givemeschumm/ https://www.kurtisschumm.com/ Topics in their chat include: The connection between wine and colors, and how that led Kurtis to visual art; moving to Savannah about 20 years ago, when his artist mother moved to Tybee; studying food under a woman from Verona, Italy; Kurtis's idea to teach cooking to underprivileged communities so they can get the most healthy food out of a small budget; how he began painting just to create some art for the walls of his restaurants, and finding success selling them; details about how Plexi behaves - how you can cut it down by scoring, how he hangs it with or without frames, how various types of paint and ink behave on it; doing a portrait commission for realtor Cora Bett Thomas that included her surrounded by 10 of her dogs through the years; if you own his art and repaint the wall it's hanging on, you can change the color tone of his piece; getting his art printed on the labels of 2 wines for California-based Seamus Wines; how you can buy his work around town at Grand Bohemian Gallery and One Fish, Two Fish, as well as on St. Simon's Island; and also at the Isle of Hope show on Oct. 21, where Kurtis will be selling various sizes of original paintings. Tune in and get all the details!

Say It Skillfully® is a show that helps you to benefit from Molly Tschang's expert guidance on the best possible ways to speak your mind at work in a positive and productive manner. In Episode 193 Molly's guest is Nashville Hall of Fame singer-songwriter, Tony Arata, and his unexpected journey to the limelight of his craft, without that ever being his intention. Being “last of the litter” with 4 older siblings, Tony shares, “my parents were the best role models ever… mom with a 5th, and dad, a 3rd grade education.” Pivotal moments are a theme—a chance gift of a $50 guitar from his brother with a treasure trove of all his siblings' albums are what ignited Tony's musical interest and “fancying to be songwriter.” Hear how Aretha Franklin's R-E-S-P-E-C-T and 11th grade English teacher Sally Scott putting Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath in his hands were pivotal in his epiphany: “Songs come from people, not the radio or albums.” Moving from Columbia, SC to Tybee, GA in 11th grade, Tony recalls, “I had no friends in Tybee; my guitar and music were my friends.” He learned by voraciously listening to music and reading lyrics. Chuckle as you hear how Tony (journalism major in college) lied his way to his first job as writer… about buses. And the rest is history. A few of many gems: * True peace is found when doing what you enjoy for no other reason than it helps define you and brings you peace * That kid learning to play guitar at Tybee island is the same old man amazed by the 12 notes and 26 letters. This world of music is an ever evolving process….Nobody says, “I've arrived”. * Music is my peace, my outlet – I never had to ask permission from anyone (to write music) * … do it regardless of fame—no hollow pursuit—waiting on validation to come from somewhere else. Tony gives insight into his creative process: “Write for the best idea, best song you can at the time.” And watching a lot of people “break the rules” made all the difference. He talks about his cherished family, including wife Jaymi's game-changing role. Hear about his Tony Bennett encounter and a “do over” if he had the chance. Finally, Garth Brooks has recorded, to date, 7 of Tony's songs. Here's what Garth said about Tony, “He has to be one of my favorite songwriters. He's a cat who doesn't care about appearances. He doesn't care about money. He cares about his children, his wife & his music. That's neat.” Don't miss the inspiration of Tony pursuing his craft without an end in sight… no ulterior motive, and staying true to himself as #1 songs, #1 albums and Grammy nominations manifested. Learn about succeeding in and navigating life on your terms. Molly's thought for the week: Nobody can do everything, but everybody can do something. —Tony Arata

Before her work with Fans First Entertainment, which began in 2011, Emily spent time with Ripken Baseball, the Augusta GreenJackes, the Vermont Lake Monsters, and the Binghamton Mets. Emily's biggest passion with the team is working with the full-time staff, interns, and hundreds of game-day staff workers to focus on the culture, service, and logistics of events held at the ballpark. After the birth of their son, Maverick, Emily stepped back a little from everyday operations to raise Mav and the other children in their care (Jesse and Emily are foster parents) but can still be found often around the stadium. She also oversees their Airbnb rentals on Tybee and wrote the team's first children's book, Go Bananas! You can read more about it here. Here is what to expect on this week's show: Emily shares fun facts on how and why the Savannah Bananas do things differently. ☀️ How the internship program teaches and provides opportunities to students. ☀️ Tips on reducing team turnover. ☀️ Why the Savannah Bananas turns challenges into learning experiences. ☀️ The story behind the coast-to-coast tour of the Savannah Bananas. ☀️ Behind the “All in One” ticket price for games in Savannah. ☀️ How employees become like family and behind the meaning of “Animals are trained, people are led.” Connect with the Savannah Bananas: Website: https://thesavannahbananas.com/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/discover/The-savanah-bannanas Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesavbananas/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Savannah-Baseball-2016-547484042073874/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSavBananas YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txh0P6jfAT Get in touch with Dr. Joey at www.workpositive.today Learn more about your ad choices. We were so fortunate to sit down with Tybee Diskin from the excellent podcast Chasing Immortality! After we covered the wild world of Transhumanism, we wanted to get Tybee's insights as she covered FM-2030 on her past season. We also talk about the ethics of transhumanism, how we're closer to the singularity than we even realize, and Tybee's hilarious run-in with Google voice assistant. Next season, Chasing Immortality will cover Ray Kurzweil, and we can't wait to chat with Tybee again once that episode is released. Until then, check out Chasing Immortality wherever you get your podcasts, and be sure to check out her in-depth episode on FM-2030, available now.
