Gaza's health system nears collapse as UNRWA issues urgent alarm Gaza's healthcare is on the brink, warns the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. The agency says one-third of vital medical supplies are gone, with another third vanishing fast—blaming Israel's siege and relentless bombardment. Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini grimly cautions that the blockade risks silently killing more women and children beyond the bombs. Israel's military invasion in Gaza has killed over fifty-two thousand four hundred Palestinians since October 2023, while Tel Aviv faces genocide charges at the International Court of Justice. Yemeni Houthis target Tel Aviv airport with hypersonic missile strike Yemeni Houthis said they have launched a hypersonic ballistic missile targeting Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, warning international airlines of the airport's unsafe conditions. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree confirmed the missile hit the target, and another struck Ashkelon. Israeli authorities suspended flights at the airport after a missile landed near Terminal 3, injuring six people. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed retaliation against the Houthis and their Iranian backers. In response, US warplanes conducted airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen. Trump imposes full tariff on non-US movies President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 100 percent tariff on foreign-made films, claiming Hollywood of being ""devastated"" as US filmmakers turn to other countries for production incentives. The decision, shared via Truth Social media platform, follows criticism of his aggressive trade policies. While the full impact on the movie industry remains unclear, Trump insists it's a matter of national security. Meanwhile, talks with China and other nations on trade deals continue, with potential agreements on the horizon.
UN Humanitarian Affairs chief Tom Fletcher has been forced to make “brutal cuts” to his organization, as major donors in the rich world slash their aid and international development spending.UN News's Conor Lennon spoke to him on Thursday via video-link from the UN offices in the Afghan capital Kabul, at the end of a three week visit to some of the most vulnerable communities in the country, where he has witnessed first-hand the deadly consequences of the dramatic aid slowdown.Mr. Fletcher has publicly challenged policymakers who signed off on cuts to come to Afghanistan to see the effect they're having on the population, saying that “the effect of aid cuts, is that millions die”.Conor began by asking if he uses the same blunt language with senior politicians in private.
The United Nations was founded to promote peace, security, and international cooperation, but critics argue that it has become an inefficient bureaucracy that often works against U.S. interests. In particular, UN agencies and organizations – in which each UN Member State can choose whether or not to participate – have sometimes taken positions in conflict with what some U.S. policy makers regard as important principles and priorities. The Trump Administration recently announced that the United States will no longer participate in the U.N. Human Rights Council (UNHRC), will end all financial support for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and may withdraw from the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).Supporters, on the other hand, contend that the U.N. and its affiliated organizations remain a vital forum for diplomacy and that the United States should lead efforts to reform them rather than abandon them.Should the United States push for structural changes within the U.N. and its affiliated entities, or would withdrawal better serve American sovereignty and foreign policy goals? What are the legal and geopolitical implications of either path? Join the Federalist Society for a discussion with experts on international law, foreign policy, and constitutional governance as we explore whether the United States should help reform or quit the United Nations. With fewer than 50 days until Inauguration Day, President-elect Donald Trump spent the long holiday weekend inviting more people to join his administration. But for Democrats, the conversation is still very much backward looking, as the party litigates why it lost the 2024 election despite delivering on a lot of its promises from four years ago. Matt Yglesias, who writes the Substack newsletter ‘Slow Boring,' explains why ‘deliverism' didn't deliver for Democrats in 2024.And in headlines: President Biden pardoned his son Hunter, a new drug to seek authorization to fight the AIDS epidemic, and The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees suspended deliveries into Gaza through a key crossing.Show Notes:Check out Matt's Substack – https://www.slowboring.com/Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

The official death toll in Gaza is now roughly 43,000 people, very conservatively. As the Lancet and others remind, armed conflicts have indirect health implications beyond the direct harm from violence, including deaths from causes such as reproductive, communicable and non-communicable diseases. In Palestine, the death toll is exacerbated by displacement; destroyed healthcare infrastructure; severe shortages of food, water and shelter; the inability to flee to safe places; and the loss of funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNWRWA), one of very few humanitarian organizations working in the region. A real accounting will also include not just those we don't yet know are dead but the maimed, the orphaned, the starved, the homeless. Democracy Now! recently spoke with a doctor from Gaza who said he wishes “Americans could see more of what it looks like when a child is shot in the head, when a child is flayed open by bombs. I think it would make us think a little bit more about what we do in the world.” As media critics, we look to Palestinians to represent Palestinian views, but it's crucial that we not see the present moment as something happening to Other People, Somewhere Else. The repression of simple anti-genocide calls, the censorship, the firings, the disinformation, the malforming of concepts like “antisemitism” — these are problems for all of us, about all of us, that will influence all of us forever. It's been a long run but the podcasting police finally caught up to us for our many crimes and are forcing us on hiatus. This may not be the end of the podcast formally, but we are putting this on the backburner for the near future as Joel moves into a new career and Naomi...does more surfing or something. We chat about All credit to Disney for use of part of the Avengers Endgame Portals theme. Hey, this is crazy and completely unintentional, but Joel discovered that his favorite track from Lilo and Stitch and that Avengers theme were both composed (or at least credited to) Alan Silvestri of Disney fame. Is Joel's taste in movies more shallow than he would like? Probably? Are they good, emotionally poignant tracks? Definitely. The Ketsa theme we've been using doesn't really portray endings well - Joel thinks Daft Punk's Touch is actually a far better song to go out on but wanted to avoid copyright strikes. Joel and Naomi wrap up Intimate Matters by talking about same-sex relationships in the 19th and 20th century (including the Wild West!), Margaret Sanger and the contraceptive revolution, and the impact the Kinsey report had on both law and media before, during, and after its release. If it sounds like Joel was choking back his words for 90% of the episode...that's because he was coming down from a cold and stopping every 2 minutes to cough. Joel and Naomi get back together to continue discussing Intimate Matters. In this section we talk more about community regulation of vice, how "queer" behavior was punished but also strangely tolerated by early settlers, the "duty" of sex in relationhips, how 17th century Enlightenment ideas radically changed people's perspectives on individual happiness, and how prostitution filled a social vacuum left by wars and new settlement patterns during the same period. Joel also goes on a tear about "The Dawn of Everything," David Graeber's incredible book that covers, among other things, the role Native people's had on influencing European thought in the 17th and 18th centuries. TNT Radio host Patrick Henningsen speaks with former UK Ambassador to Syria, Peter Ford, revealed the inside story of how Washington and Tel Aviv are planning to destroy Gaza's most crucial humanitarian lifeline, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), cynically using Israel's ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people to accelerate their operation which intends to starve and ethnically cleanse the native Palestinian population and militarily take over more illegally occupied territory. Today on ST we mark the Nakba which according to the UN means “catastrophe”. This year will mark 76 years since the 1948 forced removal of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to establish the state of Israel. Even according to UN reports prior to the Nakba Palestine was a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic society. In December of 1948 the UN General Assembly passed resolution 194 which called for the Palestinian right to return, for property restitution and compensation, this has not happened 76 years later. Indeed it was an act of the UN that caused the partition that displaced Palestinians from their land in the first place. According to the UNRW the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees mor than 5 million Palestinian refugees are throughout the Middle East. We are now 7 months into the genocide where more than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed including 14,000 children. 8 thousand are reported missing. This followed the attack on Israel by Hamas on Oct 7th where 1,200 Israeli's were killed. Palestinian fighters have resisted the occupation of Palestine going back to the 1930's, even before the Nakba, when the operation to remove Palestinians from their land had begun. Meanwhile according to the Washington Post, Israel receives more military and aid of any type than any other country in the world since WWII. The Post reports that since between 1946 and 2023 the US has provided 287 billion. For the past 7 months protests have been building in countries around the world, SA took Israel to the ICC, and most recently occupations have sprung up on university and college campuses across the US and across the world. Let us go to a clip about the impact of children of the genocide. Our guests are Zeiad Abbas Executive Director of the Middle East Children's Alliance and Um Lana a Palestinian refugee living in Shatea Refugee camp in Gaza.

In this episode we sat down with Jonathan Fowler, Senior Communications Manager for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Jonathan provides insight into the current situation for Palestinians in Gaza, as well as an overview of the access constraints and other challenges humanitarian actors face in delivering aid. Highlighting the vital role of UNRWA in not just aid distribution, but also the provision of medical care, education and other support, he discusses how disinformation campaigns targeting UNRWA and subsequent funding cuts have severely limited the Agency's capacity.
Man, it would be nice if we didn't have to do these, right? Like, if we could spend all of our time talking about new ice cream flavors or smutty novels or whatever. But sadly some legislators have decided to be real jerks about abortion stuff so we're back on the grindstone once more. This episode we discuss Arizona's recent abortion ban and the history behind it, a rise in anti-birth control information around the country, and some small blips of hope in an otherwise gloomy time. Oh, and we bully Ben Shapiro a bit. DTG despises genocide and continue to support people fighting all forms of it. In this one we discuss the medical drama series The Resident, the trauma-bonding science fiction film Upstream Color, the polyamory memoir "More," the lesbian romance drama manga How Do We Relationship, the gangster/rich person drama The Gentlemen, the immigrant relationship drama Past Lives, the Meryl Streep romcom It's Complicated, the Spiderman fanfiction comic "Spider-Sense and Sensibility," the "Things We Never Got Over" series, the existential philosophy/multiverse theory film Mr Nobody, and (only as an honorable mention) the sketchy dating romcom No Hard Feelings. The episode outro music is "Sous les draps" by Pierre von Dormael. The whole Mr Nobody soundtrack is pretty baller. So is the movie, except for the part where Jared Leto says "It's Nobody time" and nobodies all over the place. DTG despises genocide and continue to support people fighting all forms of it. Wrapping up a book critique in only 2 sections? Wow, we're making great progress on our New Year's Resolutions. In pt 2 of Art of Seduction we get into the actual text and find some uncomfortable stuff, ranging from Robert Greene misrepresenting his sources to his examples not supporting his arguments to his examples ignoring commonly-accepted historical details that run contrary to his assertions about the seductive capabilities of people like Cleopatra and JFK. Basically this book is garbage from every perspective. We also get into how the seduction advice this book gives is structured less to help normal people pick up dates and more to aid bad people exploit others. Hopefully not his intention but unfortunately an obvious conclusion. DTG despises genocide and continue to support people fighting all forms of it. We're back on the media critique grindstone, kicking off the second quarter of the year with our takes on Robert Greene's Art of Seduction. It's bad, but it's also...weird...mixing together a pseudo-academic take on seduction through the ages with ramblings about how it can be applied to advertising and politics. It's also sold over a million copies, which is more success than we'll ever have, so what do we know? Part 1 discusses the background of the book, Robert Greene's intro and reasons for writing, and then a bunch of our criticisms about the framing. Turns out relying on a bunch of myths and anecdotes isn't the best way to prepare a scholarly assessment of love through the ages. But then again, 1 million copies sold. What do we know? Uh, not a great way to intro this one. We talk about genocide in Palestine, the atrocities being committed there, how major news media companies are complicit in war crimes based upon their skewed coverage, how Israeli actions will directly impact (and already are impacting) Americans fighting for abortion access/trans rights/everything else, and the stuff that keeps us going in the face of a world seemingly only getting worse. No, seriously, we have some hopeful stuff. We would not have done this episode without that. We get it, there's a lot of doom and gloom in the world and you may already be aware of the stuff going on over there. You also might not listen to Joel's annoying voice reading summaries of war crimes for 15 minutes straight. If you want to skip to where we start talking about the lessons to take away for America, go to 35:38. If you want to skip to where Joel and Naomi talk about what is giving us hope and how to fight back, skip to 49:10Here's a piece above passive voice used by media for the current conflict...and here's a piece from 2001 pointing out the exact same thing being done for Israel/Palestine issues. Here's some information about oil deposits in Palestine. Here's some information on settler's developing Gazan real estate. UN relief chief says Hamas is not a terrorist group! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/esatalks/message
In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP non-resident fellow Peter Beinart interviews Chris Gunness, formerly the Spokesman and Director of Strategic Communications at UNRWA. They discuss the enormous humanitarian crisis in Rafah and Gaza more broadly as well as the history and function of UNRWA - the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East - and the campaign against it. Original music by Jalal Yacquoub.
After the International Court of Justice's finding that Israel's war on Gaza was a "plausible case of genocide," Israel smeared the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, claiming that four or five UNRWA employees were affiliated with Hamas. These employees were fired without any proof of wrongdoing, and several countries stopping funding UNRWA, also without seeing any concrete evidence. Many of these countries are signatories of the Genocide Convention, which means they should be doing everything possible to stop Israel's acts of genocide. Instead, they are aiding and abetting genocide by cutting off desperately needed humanitarian aid.In this episode of Speaking Out of Place we collect statements from 27 leading activists and organizations from Kashmir, Indonesia, Ireland, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, and elsewhere, including Ardi Imeis, a former legal counsel for UNRWA, former UN Special Rapporteurs on Palestine Richard Falk and Michael Lynk, Palestinian writers and activists Susan Albuhawa, Sherene Seikaly, Randa Abdel-Fattah, Lina Abojaradeh, Nasser Mashni and others, and legendary activist Angela Davis. In our Blog we list all the speakers and the time of their statement. Townhall Review – February 10, 2024 Hugh Hewitt talks with Byron York of the Washington Examiner about the Senate border bill that was dead on arrival in the House. Larry O'Connor ran through all of the provisions within the bill, including no border wall, that gave it no chance of passing. Seth Leibsohn talks with Senator John Cornyn about why the contents of the bill were not the only reason it couldn't garner enough GOP support, it is also because President Biden won't follow the laws already on the books. So why add more to be selectively enforced? Seth Leibsohn also talks with Brandon Weichert about the existential crisis at the border and how a nation without borders ceases to be a nation. Victor Davis Hanson suggests that the turmoil in the Middle East stems from rushed foreign policy decisions aimed at opposing Trump and exploiting regional tensions. He cautions that without consistent deterrence, peace is impossible. Hugh Hewitt and Dan Senor, Host of the “Call Me Back” podcast, discuss the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), shedding light on its controversial practices and questioning its unique treatment of Palestinian refugees compared to other global refugee issues. Todd Starnes introduces John Rich, a renowned musician, to discuss the profound impact Toby Keith, another great musician, had on their lives. Rich reflects on Keith's patriotism, work ethic, and independence in the music industry, emphasizing his genuine love for country and unwavering faith.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
