This is the first of a special two-part series exploring the very productive relationship which developed between the fashion director, Karl Plewka, and Val Garland, the makeup artist. Val is the first global makeup director for L'Oréal Paris and the breakout star of BBC TV’s makeup competition show, Glow Up. Karl styles Val to face the cameras. Together they explain how they met and collaborated with people like Alexander McQueen, Corrine Day, Kate Moss, Nick Knight, Solve Sundsbo and John Galliano. Val and Karl also shed light on how - in the pre Instagram era – they worked relentlessly to finesse the fine details of elaborate magazine fashion shoots and how fashion shows drove the business. Val recalls how when she decided it was time to publish a book exploring her groundbreaking career in the billion dollar beauty industry, their careers reached a turning point.
