The Possibility Club podcast: Practical Bravery - CUTTING EDGES!   In this episode we dive into the textured world of style AND substance, where creativity meets a profound sense of purpose. How do our expressions of style reflect broader cultural, economic, and personal shifts? How does the aesthetic we choose broadcast our identities and our values to the world? This episode takes us on a journey through the life and legacy of a creative industries pioneer who's been shaping the public personas of icons across the globe with nothing but a pair of scissors and a flair for transformation. From working class boy with a Bowie obssession to the style sculptor of Princess Diana, Lady Gaga, Kate Moss at their most iconic. What does social mobility look like at the very top of high fashion? And what is it like to move from creating the faces behind brands, to becoming one yourself? This is The Possibility Club, and our special guest is the hairdresser's hairdresser, Sam McKnight MBE.   ---   One of the most important image makers of the late 20th and early 21st century — New York Times on Sam McKnight   “What I know is, people want their hair to look good. Having your hair looking good is an incredible mood booster. It's a simple, relatively inexpensive way of making yourself feel better.”       Hair By Sam McKnight website https://sammcknight.com/   “We said from the beginning we want to bring some joy into the hair care world, which we have done. And I get lots of joy from that in return.”   Sam McKnight via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_McKnight   “That generation of the sixties is when social mobility became possible, really.”   Sam McKnight via Gagapedia (the Lady Gaga wiki) https://ladygaga.fandom.com/wiki/Sam_McKnight   Sam McKnight on X and Instagram — @sammcknight1   “When David Bowie exploded in colour, that was the start of it for me.”   David Bowie on Top Of The Pops, 1972, via YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOKWF3IHu0I   “My friends had a hairdressing salon. I took a Saturday job there and then very quickly I'd left teacher training college and started training as a hairdresser. I didn't want to be a teacher.”   “I've always taken risks and that goes back to being a teenager. I like to think that I've carried that through to my sixties. I've always been a risk taker.”   David Bailey, photographer, via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bailey   Twiggy (Dame Leslie Lawson), via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twiggy   “It was pretty brave, to leave a secure job in the salon in Molton Brown, the best salon in London — before it was hand-wash it was the top London salon, in South Bolton Street — it was the shit, it was the place to be, and I left that in 1980 to be by myself, doing this thing called ‘photo shoots' and two years later I was in New York working for American Vogue.”   Vogue (UK site) https://www.vogue.co.uk/   Molton Brown via Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molton_Brown   “There are much more opportunities now but there are much more people going after those opportunities.”   "There needs to be a revaluation put on the values of what we bring. You can't just turn up with a hairdryer.”   ‘Hair by Sam McKnight' 2016 retrospective exhibition at Somerset House https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/whats-on/hair-sam-mcknight   “The exhibition gave me power in myself that I hadn't really tapped into before. But we are thinking about it, and we're doing everything we can in the small ways to have less of a footprint. And I thought, that is really inspiring because it's hard!”   “Now this is where the Internet is really incredible and positive, is people doing their own hair and posting the videos. There was a couple of decades when kids weren't really doing much with their hair — and that's completely and utterly changed. And I find that really inspiring, I love that the Internet has made that possible.”   "I'm a great collaborator but in the end it's instinctive as well and I need to be happy with it.”   “I don't really have to please anyone but myself.”   ------   This episode was recorded in March 2024 Interviewer: Richard Freeman for always possible Editor: CJ Thorpe-Tracey for Lo Fi Arts   For more visit www.alwayspossible.co.uk

In this episode I go on a Style Journey with the iconic hairstylist Sam McKnight MBE. Sam's unparalleled portfolio of work reads like a who's-who of high-fashion and A-list celebrity: he is credited with the creation of Princess Diana's iconic slicked-back hairstyle for her 1990 Vogue magazine shoot, and was her personal hair stylist for seven years. He has worked extensively with the supermodels Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss & Naomi Campbell  from the 80's to today. Sam's work has included over 200 Vogue covers; campaigns for Chanel, Tom Ford, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Armani …the list goes on and season-after-season he influences the evolution of hair at runways shows from Chanel to Vivienne Westwood…    We talk about his time being Diana's personal hair stylist …how “slavishly following fashion trends is terribly unfashionable” (I could not agree more)… reminiscing about wearing platforms in the 70's (but having to take a pair of slippers to his driving lessons) and most importantly how good clothes can make you feel good (why I designed so passionately for 30+ years). Of course we talk about his friendship with Kate Moss who he has collaborated with for many years and has always said “Sam has the magic touch”.   I hope you enjoy the episode…thank you Sam for being such a wonderful guest.

Celebrated session hair stylist, Sam McKnight, is the hairdresser's hairdresser. He boasts a legendary career spanning over four decades encompassing catwalk, editorial and advertising campaigns for fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, Balmain, Burberry and Tom Ford. A regular contributor to both British and international Vogues, W, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, i-D and Love, he has over 100 covers to his name from British Vogue alone. McKnight is also a Contributing Beauty Editor at British Vogue. McKnight has collaborated with some of the world's most prominent photographers including Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino and Nick Knight. A long-time stylist for the late Princess Diana, McKnight was the creative behind her iconic short, slicked back hairstyle in the now-famous 1990 Demarchelier shoot for British Vogue, a partnership that led to him becoming her personal hair stylist for seven years. One of the original session stylists, McKnight initially trained as a teacher before working as an assistant at a local hairdresser in his native Scotland. Moving to London in the early 1970's, McKnight secured a position at Molton Brown, which at the time was a leading hair salon in London's South Molton Street. He worked on projects for London-based magazines 19 and Honey before landing his first editorial shoot with British Vogue in 1977. While working in London, he was introduced to stylists Liz Tilberis (later editor of British Vogue and Harpers Bazaar US) and Lucinda Chambers (British Vogue), who were instrumental in hiring him for high-profile editorial shoots. McKnight has been bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award at both the Scottish Fashion Awards and Creative Head Awards 2015. He is hugely respected within the hairdressing community and is often cited as a source of inspiration or named as ‘the hairstylist I would most like to work with' by his peers. On November 2nd 2016, Somerset House launched Hair by Sam McKnight, a major exhibition celebrating McKnight's impressive career. Never before has an exhibition of this kind taken place, looking at hair from a new perspective and celebrating the significant role of session hair styling in both fashion and culture throughout the decades. In tandem, McKnight also released his first book: Hair by Sam McKnight (Rizzoli), a hardback anthology of his magazine covers, editorial shoots and personal insights into working at the heart of the fashion industry. June 2017 saw McKnight launch a brand: Hair by Sam McKnight, in Liberty of London, injecting fashion, glamour and ease into haircare and styling. The collection is the culmination of McKnight's knowledge and experience in the industry, giving women the tools and confidence to style their hair themselves

Sometimes I find myself searching for words to aptly describe the achievements and status of someone who is way ahead of the pack.   My guest on today's episode is one such person, and I'm going to describe him as a ‘hairdressing genius.' Sam McKnight is a session stylist with a list of eye-watering achievements, including having worked with every supermodel you can name, as well as celebrities, movie stars, royalty, photographers, magazines, and fashion designers, over the last 40 years. He has so many Vogue covers to his credit that he's lost count (well over 250!) He's won awards, had exhibitions, published his own book, and been a contributing editor to British Vogue. Sam is currently a judge on the UK reality TV show, ‘The Big Blow Out' (which is sponsored by Paul Mitchell), and on top of all that, Sam is the founder of his own product range, simply called “Hair by Sam McKnight.” So, in today's podcast, we just talk about being Sam McKnight…   In this Episode: [04:04] The transition point in Sam's life that is marked by his book, Hair By Sam McKnight. [09:47] Sam explains what motivated him to become a session stylist at a time when most hairdressers were focused on cutting hair.  [14:46] The person who influenced Sam in the early years of his career.  [16:33] Value that lies in building and maintaining good relationships with people in the industry.  [19:38] Characteristics and situations that Sam is repelled by. [23:06] The balance between intimacy and distance that is required of a hairdresser. [26:21] A trait that Sam believes has been key to his success.  [27:29] Some of the catalytic moments that signaled a step-up in Sam's career.  [29:38] The combination of factors that turn a model into a worldwide phenomenon. [32:24] Dynamism that defines the modern hairdressing industry. [34:51] The genius of Karl Lagerfeld. [37:27] The power that lies in being a hairstylist.  [42:13] How Sam became involved in the reality TV show, The Big Blow Out, and an overview of the concept behind the show.  [46:53] Sam's experience of creating his haircare brand, and the elements that make his products stand out.  [52:22] What Sam thinks hairdressers should do to stay relevant in the industry as it evolves.  [59:19] Sam's biggest strength, the most important life lesson he has learned, and what he wishes he was better at.    Thanks so much for joining me this week. Hello our Woman Inc. Listeners! Our guest this week is Helen Reavey, CCO and Founder of Act+Acre. Act+Acre is the first modern hair wellness brand that encourages you to 'treat your hair like you treat your skin.' The cutting-edge, vegan, natural haircare line is sulfate, silicone, paraben, gluten and cruelty-free and environmentally friendly. We are not about quick fixes. We are about expertise, caring, and thinking things through. We are committed to creating products with the long-term wellbeing of your scalp and in turn, your hair, in mind. Act+Acre was founded by husband-and-wife team Helen Reavey, founder and celebrity hairstylist, and Colm Mackin, founder and CEO. The brand launched with three essential Cold Processed products: Hair Cleanse, Hair Conditioner and their hero product, the Scalp Detox. Each product delivers nutrients to your scalp and strands without any harsh chemicals that can strip away the oils the scalp needs for healthy hair growth. The founders have created a patented cold-process technique to create their plant-based products, skipping the traditional heat-based production, which can lessen the potency of seed oils. As Act+Acre products continue to evolve and expand, the potency of products and scalp-first approach will stay a priority.  Helen Reavey knows a thing or two about the link between scalp health and hair vitality. As a veteran of hairstylist Sam McKnight's backstage team and with over 15 years as the go-to stylist for the world's leading fashion brands, celebrities, and media outlets, Helen wanted to create a new playbook for hair wellness. Having worked worldwide on all races, genders, nationalities, the one thing that Helen noted as being common across the board was poor scalp health. Her curiosity resulted in a realization that the industry was serving up a selection of sub-par products that do not serve to nourish, balance and stimulate the scalp… enter Act+Acre I hope you enjoy!

‘These days everyone wants to put cameras everywhere. I refuse to have them in the dressing room, because that is sacrosanct. Those are the two hours where the person in the chair becomes the person that’s going to be in front of the camera that day. Sometimes that’s themselves, sometimes it’s somebody very different. It’s not just about the physical act of doing the hair and the make-up, it’s the psychological act of becoming.’ I’m joined by the legendary hair stylist Sam McKnight. Sam’s career has taken him all over the world and seen him work with every noteworthy publication, transforming the most high profile people going, including Princess Diana, with whom Sam worked for 7 years, during which time he famously created that iconic shorter, slicked back ‘do.In this episode, we talk about his journey from cleaning windows as a boy to being the most in demand hairdresser in the business, his enduring love of gardening (including how the scents of said garden have influenced his Hair by Sam McKnightrange), and how his job is as much about being a grounding confidante as it is about doing the hair itself.Beauty Full Lives is hosted by Madeleine Spencer, produced by Charlie Jones, and with artwork by Sung Lee. What does it really take to have a celebrity client base? My guest on today's Podcast is Nicola Clarke who is a salon partner and the creative colour director at John Frieda salons in London as well as being a major celebrity colourist. Nicola's success is not only due to her talent as a colourist but her personal qualities of grit, determination and persistence which are lessons that we all need to take on board as we work through the coming weeks. For many hairdressers, the opportunity to work 1-1 with some of the worlds top models, musicians, actors and celebrities is their dream job and definition of success. But obviously, it’s a definition of success that only a few can achieve and even less can maintain. It takes more than just technical and creative skills. You also have to be a certain type of person to be able to deal with celebrity clients, because it can be demanding, unpredictable and stressful to the extreme… But the upside is also pretty cool as well! Nicola has a client list that includes the likes of Kate Moss, Madonna, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchette, Carey Mulligan, Margot Robbie, Sienna Miller, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jake Gyllenhall, Brad Pitt, Claudia Schiffer, Tilda Swinton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Dua Lipa… I am sure you are getting the idea. Quite simply Nicola is the colourist behind some of the worlds most photographed faces as well as being called upon to create characters in the world of film. Nicola runs the gauntlet from film locations and magazine shoots to red carpet but is always back to the salon, which she describes as ‘the best part’ of the job. So if you are expecting some prima donna princess, you will be disappointed because Nicola is one of the most down to earth, loyal and normal people that you will ever meet and I suggest that that is one of her secret weapons! In This Episode: [02:36] Nicola, welcome to the show! [03:21] Nicola shares how she got into the business when she was thirteen. [04:35] When did you start working full time in a salon situation? [07:52] Nicola speaks about being interested in session hairdressing and wanting to be a part of that world. [10:12] She chats about working at a place called Hyper Salon. [12:35] Nicola shares that she took her holiday’s during fashion week with the hope that she could assist Sam McKnight. [14:35] Were you working in the salon as a colorist or an all-around hairdresser? [17:09] Nicola speaks about the transition from working at a salon to becoming a session stylist and colorist for celebrities. [19:31] She chats about an article in Vogue about her being Sam’s assistant. [20:27] Nicola shares being asked to fix Gwyneth Paltrow’s hair on set. [22:50] Antony believes that part of Nicola’s success is because she is not intimidated by anyone. [25:35] Nicola sees celebrities as regular clients, not as someone famous. I recently had the pleasure to connect at the British Hairdressing Awards 2019 with the celebrity, award winning and session hair stylist Louis Byrne. It was here where I first learned of his inspirational empowerment project, I Can, I Am, and I Will. I loved it so much, that I just had to bring him on to todays show. Completing our 3 week instalment series dedicated to mental health and wellbeing awareness within the hairdressing industry, we are to learn today on how Louis's life changing experiences led him through a process of understanding, acceptance, sobriety and self-care. It was during this big shift in his life that Louis says, "The positive mantras replayed over in my head with each beginning with I Can…, I Am… and I Will." Having 20 years of experience working at the top of his industry, Louis seemed to have it all. 4 years assisting Sam McKnight travelling the international fashion week circuit, styling editorials for the likes of Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and L’Officiel, working on campaigns from Net-a-Porter to Nike, been the tour stylist for Ellie Goulding, the man behind the ‘quaff’ for Emma Willis, and the go-to hair stylist for an impressive number of actresses, models and musicians. However, the journey to reaching these heights wasn’t always plain sailing! Riding on a rollercoaster of working hard, playing hard and fast living to avoid facing his demons, culminated in a debilitating accident in 2018 when Louis broke his leg in 3 places. Forced to pause and take stock of his situation, Louis began a process of looking inwards. As Louis explains, "I had to face up to issues including the trauma and loss that had been plagued me since childhood, destructive behavioural traits and addiction that had affected me and those close to me deeply." Everyone of us has our own story to tell, including our own versions of the positive mantras beginning I Can, I Am and I Will. For Louis he focused his love for the art and expression of hair styling and considered the power of the connection between stylist and client. He realised the empowering and transformative effect this combination can have which goes beyond appearance alone, and this laid the foundation for the project that connects creativity to wellness, with a driving force of positivity. An ongoing project, todays podcast finishes with how you can become involved by sharing your own version of 'I Can, I Am and I Will' using the hashtag #icaniamandiwill. So lets all do this together as we head off into a new decade and era of self-discovery. Happy and Healthy New Year to you all!   A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions.   Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. A Different Tweed: Fashion Conversations with Bronwyn Cosgrave

At the spring/summer 20/20 ready-to-wear shows, the hairstyles Sam McKnight created were recognized as conclusive trends. These included neon feather bangs beautifying Dries Van Noten and Christian Lacroix’s epic collaboration, the striking center part defining Virginie Viard’s Chanel debut and the slicked back tresses seen at Mary Katrantzou’s Athenian extravaganza. This is an abridged version of Bronwyn Cosgrave’s conversation with Sam McKnight which Japanese Vogue described as “a definitive profile of a master at work.”

Since his very first Vogue cover in 1977, hair stylist Sam McKnight has been behind some of the most iconic fashion shoots of all time. Here, he tells Mariella how he found himself in the vanguard of the most glamorous industry in the world.  "I wanted to be part of that world — it looked so luxurious and glamorous, a kind of world I had never seen before."   "Hair is transformative", so says Sam McKnight. Captivated by the pages of glossy magazines as a teen, the now-lauded hair stylist moved to London from the small mining town of New Cumnock to find himself landing a job in the capital's most illustrious hair salon and styling Vogue shoots by 1977. After four decades of iconic covers, catwalk shows and celebrity clientele (he was personal hair stylist to Princess Diana for seven years), he marked his star-studded career with the launch of an eponymous line of hair products in 2017.

Fashion hairstylist Sam McKnight has worked on Chanel’s blockbuster runway shows for a decade. Hear him discuss the artistry he conjures for this venerable fashion house and also the intricacy of the styling process which he masterminds for the world’s most beautiful women like Kate Moss. Over his four-decade career, McKnight has racked up 100 British Vogue covers and on A Different Tweed he also explains why the magazine’s editor, Edward Enninful, appointed him to be one of his contributing editors. McKnight also ponders if Instagram has replaced fashion magazine covers as fashion’s position of power, why he “adored” Diana, Princess of Wales and how his London garden is his “oasis.” McKnight is A Different Tweed’s ultimate guest. Firstly, he hails from tweed’s homeland, Scotland, and while he recalls that his grandparents lived in tweed suits he also recounts how for Chanel’s legendary Fall 2014 show – which was staged amidst a fantastical supermarket backdrop - his team spent days ripping to shreds Chanel couture tweed from which they produced “massive ponytails.” One of Sam’s team members, hairstylist Helen Reavy, who worked on Chanel’s supermarket show during the five-and-a-half years she assisted him - also joins us on A Different Tweed to celebrate the technical virtuosity of Sam McKnight. About A Different Tweed A Different Tweed is fashion’s equivalent to Inside The Actors Studio. So while this podcast champions the craft of fashion and luxury through dynamic, informed and entertaining storytelling, the tone is intimate as the industry’s leading professionals reveal the creative process, challenges and personal journeys which have been integral to their artistry. Hosts Bronwyn Cosgrave and Mosha Lundström Halbert are globetrotting fashion journalists, broadcasters and friends. A Different Tweed is, in many ways, an extension of their camaraderie and actions their belief that the podcast is an ideal medium to explore fashion change through entertaining, informed storytelling. A Different Tweed comes to listeners from an array of destinations because today fashion is a global operation which is thriving beyond its traditional capitals. Fashion professionals are also nomadic and capturing them at work on the go - or in their professional domain - enhances the experience of tuning in. Make-up artist Mary Greenwell is a beauty industry legend who's made up some quite extraordinary people, including Cate Blanchett, Diana, Princess of Wales, Jessica Chastain, Cindy Crawford, Meghan Markle, Amanda Seyfried, Christy Turlington, and Margaret Thatcher. But the thing that really distinguishes Mary's work from that of other make-up artists is not who she's made up, but rather how very memorable the end effect is. Think of those '80s supermodels sporting smoky eyes and honeyed skin, and you're invariably thinking of Greenwell's work. She famously transformed Princess Diana in the '90s, when she and Sam McKnight modernised Diana's look. And who could forget Meghan Markle's cover turn on Vanity Fair, freckles out, eyes rimmed with softly-smudged kohl?Mary's influence doesn't stop with the people she's made up, though - she was assisted by and was therefore integral in developing the skills of make-up artists like Lisa Eldridge and Charlotte Tilbury, and has advised countless brands on how their products should look and feel.On this episode, I was very keen for Mary to tell us some of her stories from both from her stellar career and perhaps one or two that might offer some insight into how a young girl from West Sussex who, by her own admission, was a 'little hippy' came to be one of the most revered women in the beauty industry. Mary kindly indulged my curiosity, and I hope you'll find the tale of her journey to being a working make-up artist as riveting as I did, as well as, of course, enjoying her recollections of working with some of the most celebrated people in the world, and paying heed to her tips on make-up (those of you who aren't fans of brushes will no doubt delight in her views on them). Here are the products Mary mentions:- Lanvin Arpege Eau de Parfum- Iles Formula Luxury Haircare- Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat- Yves Saint Laurent Number 19 Lipstick- Calvin Klein Original Fragrance- Sisley Eau de Soir Eau de Parfum- MAC Face & Body- Elizabeth Arden Smoky Eyes Powder Pencil- Nicola Clarke at Nicola Clarke at John Frieda- Joel Goncalves at Nicola Clarke at John FriedaBeauty Full Lives is hosted by Madeleine Spencer, produced by Charlie Jones, and with artwork by Sung Lee.
