As the panel of Dungeon Masters peers through the mists and into the domains of dread, they keep an eye out for what ghostly jaunts might inspire them, and what seems just a little too edgy. This is an odd campaign setting that isn't properly explained in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition until the latest book, Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, came out, and these DM's revel in their love for all things terrifying, as they take a quick look at over two dozen little domains. Essentially a reimagining of the “changelings” of old, hexbloods are born either through curses, wishes, prevalent fey magic all over the place or through the machinations of hags. The result is a crown-like set of horns, brightly colored, often sigil-inscribed skin, and some truly interesting fey magic powers. This week father and son face off in a showdown to decide which is better: making a fantasy robot character using the Warforged race from Eberron, or building one using the Reborn race from Van Richten's Guide. Two robots enter, but only one can prevail! We compare features and traits, overall role play potential and additional add-ons. It's a close fought battler. Tune in to find out which race will best serve your next fantasy robot PC build. Welcome to Like Dragon Like Son, a podcast hosted by Jay and Jack Oatway where they discuss everything D&D, from character builds to personal experiences. Whether you're playing a book Dungeons & Dragons campaign or just have big plans for a couple uglies in the Monster Manual, there's a level window where your PCs will have a good, balanced encounter with those threats. But what do you do when the party isn't in that window? Maybe through the course of their adventures, the PCs have explored everything and leveled up too fast, so now Strahd or Auril or whatever big bad is looking a little wimpy? Or maybe your players have characters they've been playing for a while and love, but the campaign they want to play is lower level, so it'll need some adjustment? Either way, you may find yourself looking for ways to scale up the danger so that climactic battle still has some bite. In this episode, Thorin, Tony and Dave talk about how they approach these problems. Listen on to hear 3 good ways to bring underpowered villains' power up to par, Dave's dilemma with Strahd and the jacked level-10 party of 6, and whether or not level-adjusting modules is worth the effort in the first place. 1:00 A Listener Question: How can you scale up Rime of the Frostmaiden's Auril for higher-level play? 2:00 Leveling out of the window: How do you keep your BBEG challenging for a party that's powering up faster than expected? 7:00 The 1st Way to Boost Your Villain: Leveling up their monster type 10:00 “I want to play it the way it's Done”: Why DM Dave is Reluctant to modify Strahd in Curse of Strahd or Auril in Rime of the Frostmaiden, even though the players may be higher level 13:00 Be careful just increasing Villain hit points and making the fight longer, and what to do instead 17:00 BBEGs like Strahd and Auril should not just get smoked — they have more stuff going on 20:00 The 2nd Way to Boost Your Villain: Giving Strahd additional forces or power-ups to make sure the fight is interesting 23:00 The 3rd Way to Boost Your Villain: Upgrade its raw stats and powers, but try to keep the length of the fight the same — and what's wrong with the DMG on this? 26:00 A few Final Fantasy 7 spoilers and how to use them with your villain 29:00 Monster Benchmarking: Go look at things that are the kind of threat you want your villain to be 35:00 Your BBEG should know the party and plan to beat them specifically. But how well should the party know them? 45:00 Is it worth scaling up a pre-made adventure to fit a higher-level party, or is that wasted effort? 53:00 How the unexpected makes for some of the most memorable D&D moments 58:00 It depends on the room: Giving your players what they want 60:00 Initial impressions of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft: Did we just buy homework? 63:00 Final thoughts Support this podcast
Check out the full Reborn 5e guide here: https://www.skullsplitterdice.com/blogs/dnd/reborn-5e-guide Death isn't the handicap it used to be, and you can still haul your dead carcass off to the next adventure as a reborn! Newly introduced in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, 5e players can customize the undead monstrosity of their dreams and unleash them into their next campaign. Rather than specifically ghosts, zombies, or skeletons, reborn cast a wide net over any sort of not-dead you can come up with. You could be raised by necromancy, cursed to walk the earth, a resurrection gone wrong, or a spiritual husk with some serious adventure-based unfinished business. Check out the full Dhampir 5e guide here: https://www.skullsplitterdice.com/blogs/dnd/dhampir-5e-guide While a vampire is far too powerful to put into the character's hands as a playable race, dhampirs fit the power level just fine with all the style, black eyeliner, and edgy fangs you could want. Dhampirs have been stalking DnD for quite some time, sometimes as monsters, sometimes as playable characters, but finally with the release of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft we have the opportunity to play them in 5th edition. I review Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft
We dive into a different type of build this week. Instead of making a character, we are building a nemesis for our players -- someone truly evil, someone beyond redemption. Join us as we dig into Chapter 2 of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft and build a Darklord of our own. We also tap into some tables from Xanathar's, the DMG and even turn some cards from the Tarroka deck. And the fates do not disappoint us. Meet Felix Shepard, owner/operator of The Harth Casino and Hotel -- a dread domain. He and his sentient walking stick stroll the gaming floors, ever hungry for more money. He calls the stick Mother, and it seems to talk telepathically to him. Few know the true secret to his dark powers -- and if they do they probably don't have long to live. Born to wealth, he was also a natural born liar and a cheat -- and made a sport out of it. But sometimes he would lose, and in those moments he would be desperate to use family wealth to dig himself out. He seals his Dark Fate the terrible night when he confronts his mother for her money, knowing that if she refused, he would simply kill her and claim it as inheritance. Which he does. Then whileattempting to burn the house down to hide the evidence of him bludgeoning her to death with a firepoker, he gets trapped in the house and burnt alive with her. He awakens to find himself the new owner of his very own Domain of a Dread, a casino and hotel that he can never truly leave -- but can repeatedly burn to the ground. And he finds that the firepoker has transformed into a powerful weapon -- and artifact that houses the haunting spirit of his mother, and that he cannot willingly let go of. Find out how we came to all this (and lots more) in this episode of Like Dragon Like Son, a podcast hosted by Jay and Jack Oatway where they discuss everything D&D, from character builds to personal experiences. I picked up Wizards of the Coast's Fifth Edition Dungeons & Dragons supplement, "Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft," over the weekend. Having given it an initial read, I think it might be my favorite 5E supplement. Why? It provides conceptual, mostly system agnostic tools, for creating and developing horror settings, such as Ravenloft, that I think can be leveraged as a powerful general tool for thinking about and implementing BBEGs, whether you're running 5E, OSR, or a different system altogether.* Hexed Press on YouTube: https://hxpr.to/tube* Become a Patron of my Patreon: http://hxpr.to/patreon* Buy me a coffee on ko-fi: http://hxpr.to/kofi* "Bent Worlds" Newsletter: https://hxpr.to/mrju0c

We then end the show talking D&D, specifically Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft.

We all like to build cool, interesting characters. We like breaking tropes, and coming up with original concepts. But often that's not enough. This episode, we look at not just building a good character, we look at building "the right character". Even the best character build will be terrible if they don't fit in with the setting, and they don't fit in with the rest of the party. To get it right, players and DMs need to work together. The DM must be willing to discuss details about the world, to give away little pieces of the story to the player, and in exchange take little pieces of the character's backstory and make them part of the world. We look at how we have done this with an unusual Swarmp Keeper Ranger build that is designed to be played in a "Ravenloft" setting -- just in time for the arrival of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. See link to character sheet below. Welcome to Like Dragon Like Son, a podcast hosted by Jay and Jack Oatway where they discuss everything D&D, from character builds to personal experiences.
