You haven't really paid much attention to the war, to be honest. Yes, you're sure it's Glorious and Free - oh, and Democratic too! - but mostly you've been studying Data Science and employing it in your Assigned Occupation as a Category Four Data Drone. But you've grown tired of the Class Eight Habitation Module that you've been Democratically Allocated, and of your life as a Category Four Data Drone. And in order to have a voice in civic affairs (not to mention the chance to live somewhere nicer), you've enlisted with the Democratic People's Glorious Free Army in their Free Glorious People's Democratic War Against The Alien Menace. You enlisted with the Tenth Democratic Free Glorious People's Mobilization, and were assigned to a training battalion under Sergeant Rico. He's taught you a great deal about armed combat, unarmed combat, and how many pushups you can be forced to do before your arms give out. You're sure the People's Glorious Free Democratic Army knows more than you about war in general. But you feel like the logistical and troop-deployment decisions being made are suboptimal, and you've been on the lookout for ways to employ your knowledge of Data Science to improve them. So when you got your hands on a dataset of past deployments against the Alien Menace, you brought up with Sgt. Rico that you think you can use that to improve outcomes by selecting the right weapons loadout for each squad to bring. In retrospect, when he leaned into your face and screamed: 'So you think you can do better, recruit?', that might have been intended as a rhetorical question, and you probably shouldn't have said yes. Now you've been assigned to join a squad defending against an attack by the Alien Menace. Reading through the first few chapters in Genesis introduces us to, well, everything. But most of all we start getting to know God, especially in his role as Maker. The first Maker objects, Maker catalogue, Maker store, filled with Maker craft, Maker intention, Maker invention, Maker ideas. All of creation Spoken.Formed.Fashioned.Made. For Glory.4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8 And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. For Glory is the game of gladiatorial combat and deckbuilding and the new expansion introduces some interesting new mechanisms, introduces solo mode and increases player count to three or four players. Board Boys Cam and Josh recently headed to Nebraska City, NE for ATBCon2020. The con was a blast and provided a unique opportunity for the boys to preview the upcoming KS game, For Glory. The two-player deck builder pits rival gladiator schools against each other - providing unique decisions as players build up their schools; their reputation; and their gladiators before ultimately sending them to battle. We don't normally preview KS games but For Glory was too good to not discuss. Look for it on Feb 4th!
Manuela Sáenz was an Ecuadorian revolutionary who for many years was most famous for her role as the lover of Simón Bolívar - the Venezuelan military leader who secured independence from Spain for a number of countries in South America between 1819-1830. Sáenz left her British husband for Bolívar, or 'The Liberator' as he was known, and famously saved the leader from an assassination attempt, earning her the name 'Libertadora'. But Sáenz was a political force in her own right, receiving various honours for her work for the revolutionary cause. She continued her involvement in politics right to the end of her life while exiled in Peru, acting as a spy and creating a network of informants. As many countries in what used to be known as 'Gran Colombia' celebrate 200 years of independence from Spain, Bridget Kendall speaks to three experts about Manuela Sáenz's key role in the independence struggle: Pamela Murray, professor of history at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and author of the biography For Glory and Bolívar: The Remarkable Life of Manuela Sáenz; Matthew Brown, professor in Latin American history at the University of Bristol, UK; and Marcela Echeverri, associate professor at Yale University's Department of History in the United States. Episode 5 Smash 4 History Developer: Bandai Namco and Sora Ltd Release Date: 3DS Japan September 13, 2014, US October 3, 2014, and EU October 4, 2014 WiiU US November 21, 2014, EU November 29, 2014, Japan December 6, 2014 Development During E3 2011, Smash was announced for the WiiU and the 3DS. Development for the game didn’t start until October of that year. At E3 2012 there was no mention of the game which confused and disappointed some fans because of it being announced a year earlier. Shortly after E3 during a Nintendo Direct, it was announced that Bandai Namco was along with Sora, Sakurai’s company would be developing the game. At E3 2013, Sakurai began posting photos of the game regularly on the miiverse. At first they seemed to be random screenshots with no info, but eventually, that changed and he began including more info. December 5th, 2014, was the last post and you can see all the archived Miiverse posts here. July 2nd, 2012 Sakurai posted a whiteboard drawing to Twitter showing off a number of characters that would all end up in the game. The picture has been removed from Twitter but can be seen here. Zero Suit Samus, Wario, Sandbag, Pit, Pikmin, Pikachu, Mr. Saturn, Mr. Game and Watch, Meta Knight, Marth, Mario, Luigi, Link, Kirby, Fox and Donkey Kong. Initially, Sakurai said there would be a single player story mode, but it was later dropped. Gameplay Changes One of the biggest changes was the speed of the game. Melee is extremely fast-paced and frantic, Brawl was much slower, Smash 4 was faster than Brawl but still slower than Melee. Melee is an extremely combo heavy game and high-level players could easily punish players that left themselves open to it. Smash 4 allows for combos but not to the extent that Melee does. Getting yourself out of combos is much easier in Smash 4, but not as easy as it was in Brawl. Bridging the gap between casual and hardcore is what Smash 4 set out to do, but that does end up making the competitive matches less interesting to watch than Melee. The much improved online did a much better job catering to players. The casual could play with friends and the hardcore could play For Glory matches. Lag can still be an issue but it's much better than Brawl. Competitive scene Melee’s high-level competitive play is unmatched when watching pros play and the skill gap sets players apart. Most Melee players have stuck with Melee because Smash 4 is still more like Brawl and less like Melee. In spite of that Smash 4 has still made its way into the tournament scene. The small screen and lack of single player hurt the score some. Some circle pads were also damaged from gamers pushing on it too hard on them. Smash 4 on 3DS is the 8th best selling game on the console at over 9 million units sold. The WiiU version is a little higher at 92/100 it’s the second highest rated Smash game, Brawl being number one. Smash 4 on the WiiU is the 4th best selling title with almost 5.5 million units sold. My History with Smash 4 I picked up both games at launch, but the WiiU version didn’t get much play time. I was lucky enough to get the GameCube controller adapter at launch without a preorder but never picked up the Smash Controllers. My boys were really into to shooters when Smash launched so we didn’t play much together. The younger one did have the game on 3DS so we played that periodically. Fast forward to 2018 and I can’t put the game down. This
